नयी दिल्ली, 25 जुलाई (भाषा) ‘‘राष्ट्र सर्वप्रथम, हमेशा सर्वप्रथम’’ के मंत्र पर बल देते हुए प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने रविवार को आह्वान किया कि ऐसे समय में जब देश आजादी के 75वें साल में प्रवेश कर रहा है, हर भारतीय को महात्मा गांधी के नेतृत्व में हुए ‘‘भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन’’ की तर्ज पर ‘‘भारत जोड़ो आंदोलन’’ का नेतृत्व करना है।उन्होंने कहा कि आजादी की 75वीं वर्षगांठ पर मनाया जा रहा ‘‘अमृत महोत्सव’’ कार्यक्रम ना तो किसी सरकार का या फिर किसी राजनीतिक दल का है बल्कि देश की जनता का है। आकाशवाणी के मासिक रेडियो कार्यक्रम ‘‘मन की बात’’ की.

उन्होंने कहा कि आजादी की 75वीं वर्षगांठ पर मनाया जा रहा ‘‘अमृत महोत्सव’’ कार्यक्रम ना तो किसी सरकार का या फिर किसी राजनीतिक दल का है बल्कि देश की जनता का है।

आकाशवाणी के मासिक रेडियो कार्यक्रम ‘‘मन की बात’’ की 79वीं कड़ी में अपने विचार साझा करते हुए प्रधानमंत्री ने देशवासियों से आह्वान किया कि जिस प्रकार देश की आजादी के लिए सभी लोग एकजुट हो गए थे उसी प्रकार सभी को देश के विकास के लिए भी एकजुट होना है।

उन्होंने कहा कि इस साल 15 अगस्त को देश आजादी के 75वें साल में प्रवेश कर रहा है और जिस आजादी के लिए देश ने सदियों का इंतजार किया, उसके 75 वर्ष होने की आज की पीढ़ी साक्षी बन रही है। प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि इस अवसर पर देश अमृत महोत्सव मना रहा है जिसकी मूल भावना अपने स्वाधीनता सेनानियों के मार्ग पर चलना और उनके सपनों का देश बनाना है।

उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘अमृत महोत्सव किसी सरकार का कार्यक्रम नहीं, किसी राजनीतिक दल का कार्यक्रम नहीं, यह कोटि-कोटि भारतवासियों का कार्यक्रम है। जैसे, देश की आजादी के मतवाले, स्वतंत्रता के लिए एकजुट हो गए थे, वैसे ही हमें देश के विकास के लिए एकजुट होना है।’’

उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘बापू के नेतृत्व में ‘भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन’ चला था, वैसे ही आज हर देशवासी को ‘भारत जोड़ो आंदोलन’ का नेतृत्व करना है। ये हमारा कर्तव्य है कि हम अपना काम ऐसे करें जो विविधताओं से हमारे भारत को जोड़ने में मददगार हो।’’

उन्होंने देशवासियों का आह्वान करते हुए कहा, ‘‘तो आइए, हम ‘अमृत महोत्सव’ को यह अमृत संकल्प लें कि देश ही हमारी सबसे बड़ी आस्था, सबसे बड़ी प्राथमिकता बना रहेगा। ‘राष्ट्र सर्वप्रथम, हमेशा सर्वप्रथम’ के मंत्र के साथ ही हमें आगे बढ़ना है।’’

आजादी की 75वीं वर्षगांठ के अवसर पर देश भर में मनाए जा रहे कार्यक्रमों का उल्लेख करते हुए प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि ऐसा ही एक आयोजन 15 अगस्त को राष्ट्रगान को लेकर किया जा रहा है।

उन्होंने कहा कि सांस्कृतिक मंत्रालय की कोशिश है कि इस दिन ज्यादा-से-ज्यादा भारतवासी मिलकर राष्ट्रगान गाएं और इसके लिए ‘‘राष्ट्रगानडॉटइन’’ नामक एक वेबसाइट भी बनाई गई है।

उन्होंने देशवासियों से इस अभियान से जुड़ने की अपील भी की और कहा कि इसी तरह के बहुत सारे अभियान तथा बहुत सारे प्रयास आने वाले दिनों में और देखने को मिलेंगे।

प्रधानमंत्री ने तोक्यो ओलंपिक का उल्लेख करते हुए कहा कि जब हाथों में तिरंगा लेकर भारतीय दल को वहां उन्होंने चलते देखा तो पूरा देश गौरवान्वित हो गया। पिछले दिनों खिलाड़ियों से अपने संवाद का जिक्र करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि इन खिलाड़ियों ने कई चुनौतियों और संकट का सामना करने के बाद ओलंपिक दल में अपनी जगह बनाई। उन्होंने देशवासियों से ओलंपिक खिलाड़ियों का हौसला बढ़ाने की अपील की।

प्रधानमंत्री ने देशवासियों से देश के लिए काम करने का आह्वान करते हुए कहा कि इसमें छोटे-छोटे प्रयास भी बड़े नतीजे ला देते हैं। ‘‘वोकल फॉर लोकल’’ यानी स्थानीय उत्पादों को बढ़ाना देने और ‘‘आत्मनिर्भर भारत’’ अभियान को मजबूत करने के लिए, उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘रोज के काम काज करते हुए भी हम राष्ट्र निर्माण कर सकते हैं। हमारे देश के स्थानीय उद्यमियों, कलाकारों, शिल्पकारों, बुनकरों को सहयोग करना हमारे सहज स्वभाव में होना चाहिए।’’

उन्होंने कहा कि सात अगस्त को राष्ट्रीय हथकरघा दिवस के मौके पर प्रयासपूर्वक भी यह काम कर सकते हैं।

उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘राष्ट्रीय हथकरघा दिवस के साथ बहुत ऐतिहासिक पृष्ठभूमि जुड़ी हुई है। इसी दिन 1905 में स्वदेशी आंदोलन की शुरुआत हुई थी।’’

प्रधानमंत्री ने इस अवसर पर खादी का भी उल्लेख किया और कहा कि खादी खरीदना एक तरह से जन-सेवा और देश-सेवा भी है।

उन्होंने कारगिल विजय दिवस की 22वीं वर्षगांठ के मद्देनजर देशवासियों से कारगिल की रोमांचक कहानी पढ़ने की अपील करते हुए कहा कि यह युद्ध हमारे सशस्त्र बलों की वीरता और अनुशासन का ऐसा प्रतीक है जिसे पूरी दुनिया ने देखा है।

उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘इस बार यह गौरवशाली दिवस भी ‘अमृत महोत्सव’ के बीच में मनाया जाएगा। इसलिए यह और भी खास हो जाता है। मैं चाहूंगा कि आप कारगिल की रोमांचित कर देने वाली गाथा जरुर पढ़ें, कारगिल के वीरों को हम सब नमन करें।’’

प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि ‘मन की बात’ कार्यक्रम में संदेश व सुझाव भेजने वालों में 75 प्रतिशत तादाद ऐसे युवाओं की है जिनकी उम्र 35 वर्ष से कम है और यह एक ऐसा माध्यम है जहां सकारात्मकता एवं संवेदनशीलता है तथा जिसका चरित्र ‘‘सामूहिक’’ है।

उन्होंने कहा कि ‘मन की बात’ के श्रोताओं को लेकर एक अध्ययन किया गया जिसमें यह बात सामने आई कि संदेश व सुझाव भेजने वालों में करीब 75 प्रतिशत लोग ऐसे हैं जिनकी उम्र 35 वर्ष से कम है।

उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘यानी, भारत की युवा शक्ति के सुझाव ‘मन की बात’ को दिशा दे रहे हैं। मैं इसे बहुत अच्छे संकेत के रूप में देखता हूं।’’

मोदी ने कहा, ‘‘मन की बात एक ऐसा माध्यम है, जहां सकारात्मकता है...संवेदनशीलता है। इसमें हम सकारात्मक बातें करते हैं। इसका चरित्र सामूहिक है। सकारात्मक विचारों और सुझावों के लिए भारत के युवाओं की यह सक्रियता मुझे आनंदित करती है। मुझे इस बात की भी खुशी है कि ‘मन की बात’ के माध्यम से मुझे युवाओं के मन को भी जानने का अवसर मिलता है।’’

उल्लेखनीय है कि ‘मन की बात’ को लेकर विपक्षी दल प्राय: आरोप लगाते हैं कि इसमें प्रधानमंत्री के ‘मन की बात’ होती है और जनता के ‘मन की बात’ को प्रमुखता नहीं दी जाती।

प्रधानमंत्री ने इस कार्यक्रम के माध्यम से कृषि के क्षेत्र में देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों में हो रहे अभिनव प्रयोगों के बारे में श्रोताओं को बताया और साथ ही जल संरक्षण की भी अपील की।

Essay on nation In Hindi : नमस्कार दोस्तों आपका स्वागत है आज हम राष्ट्र पर निबंध लेकर आए हैं. राष्ट्र क्या है किसे कहते है देश और राष्ट्र, व्यक्ति और राष्ट्र आदि पर शोर्ट निबंध, भाषण, अनुच्छेद यहाँ दिया गया हैं.

हमारा भारत एक राष्ट्र है इस पर बच्चों के लिए छोटा एस्से दिया गया हैं.

एक विशाल जन समूह जिनकी एक पहचान हो उन्हें राष्ट्र की भावना एक करके रखती हैं. इसी आधार पर राष्ट्र का अर्थ उस जन समूह से है सामान्यतया जिनकी भाषा, संस्कृति, धर्म, आचार और उत्पत्ति एक ही हो.

‘राजृ’ धातु से कर्म में ‘ष्ट्रन्’ प्रत्यय लगने पर राष्ट्र शब्द बनता हैं. वही देश शब्द की उत्पत्ति दिश धातु जिसका आशय दिशा या देशांतर से होती हैं. देश को एक भूगोलिक सीमाओं से बंधा क्षेत्र कहा जा सकता हैं वही राष्ट्र में लोगों को आपस में जोड़ने वाली भावना राष्ट्र हैं.

देश को विविध आधारों पर खंडित या विभाजित किया जा सकता हैं जैसा कि 1947 में भारत देश के साथ हुआ. भारत के विभा जन के बाद तीनों देशों का जन्म हुआ.

जबकि राष्ट्र के रूप में आज भी भारत का अर्थ पाकिस्तान व बांग्लादेश समेत दक्षिण एशियाई क्षेत्र से हैं जहाँ के लोगों में सभी तरह की समानताएं विद्यमान हैं.

एक राष्ट्र जीवंत, सार्वभौमिक, युगांतकारी तथा सभी तरह की विविधताओं को साथ लेकर चलने वाला दर्शन कहा जा सकता हैं.

हमने अपने को राष्ट्रों में बाँट रखा है और प्रत्येक राष्ट्र अपने को स्वतंत्र संप्रभु राज के रूप में सव्यूह देखना चाहता हैं. दो मनुष्य एक ही विचार रखते है, एक ही संस्कृति के उपासक है,

एक को दूसरे से कोई द्वेष नहीं हैं, फिर भी विभिन्न राष्ट्रों के सदस्य होने के कारण उनके हित टकराते हैं, एक दूसरे से लड़ना पड़ता है, एक को दूसरे के बाल बच्चों को भूखा मारना पड़ता हैं.

व्यक्ति को दास बनाना बुरा समझा जाता हैं, परन्तु समूचे राष्ट्र को दास बनाना, समूचे राष्ट्र के जीवन को अपनी इच्छा के अनुसार चलाना, समूचे राष्ट्र का शोषण करना बुरा नहीं हैं.

बलात दूसरे के घर का प्रबंध नहीं किया जा सकता है परन्तु बलात दूसरे राष्ट्र पर शासन किया जा सकता हैं. राष्ट्रों और राज्यों के परस्पर व्यवहार में सत्य, अहिंसा और सहिष्णुता का कोई स्थान नहीं हैं.

जो मनुष्य दूसरे व्यक्ति की एक पाई दबा लेना बुरा समझता है, वह राजपुरुष के पद से दूसरे राष्ट्र का गला घोंट देना निदय नहीं मानता.

यह बात श्रेयस्कर नहीं, कुटुंब में व्यक्ति होते है, समाज व राष्ट्र इसी प्रकार रहे. कुछ बातों में अपना अलग अलग जीवन भी बिताएं, परन्तु सारे मानव समाज की एकता सतत सामने रहनी चाहिए.

युद्ध और कलह समाप्त होना चाहिए. जो राष्ट्र दूसरो की ओर कुदृष्टि से देखे वह राष्ट्र समुदाय से बहिष्कृत और दंडित होना चाहिए. न्याय और सत्य सामूहिक आचरण के आधार पर बनाए जा सकते हैं.

मानव संस्कृति अविभाज्य है, योगी, कवि, कलाकार, वैज्ञानिक आदि चाहे किसी देश के निवासी हो मनुष्य मात्र कि विभूति हैं.

‘Nation First, Always First’ theme for Independence Day celebrations

‘Nation First, Always First’ will be the theme of India’s 75th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on Sunday.

All the Olympians who won medals at the 2020 Tokyo Games have been sent special invites for the event.

Like 2020, this year’s event will be restricted for the public and no cultural performance will be staged by children. A group of NCC cadets will attend the event, said an officer. From paintings to floral arrangements, all aspects of the programme will bear ‘Nation First, Always First’ theme, said Delhi police sources.

Drone alert

After the recent drone attacks in Jammu, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the Delhi police to strictly adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures for drone operations.

“We have increased the total number of secured rooftops from which the Red Fort or the potential route of the Prime Minister’s cavalcade is remotely visible. Personnel have been told to take down drones or aerial objects in case they see one approaching the Red Fort or to alert higher-ups if they don’t have the requisite skills,” said a police officer.

A makeshift wall of containers has been erected at the periphery of the Red Fort to rule out any security breach owing to the ongoing farmers’ protest. The containers have been painted in hues reflecting the solemnity of the august occasion.

सत्य और अहिंसा की बात हो या परोपकार के लिए अपना सब कुछ त्याग देने की चर्चा हो, महात्मा एक महान नेता का नाम लें अथवा सफल सुधारक का, तो वह नाम अवश्य ही महात्मा गाँधी का होगा जिन्हें हम सभी प्यार से बापू और सम्मान से राष्ट्रपिता कहते हैं ।

2. जन्म और शिक्षा:

राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गाँधी का जन्म 2 अक्तूबर , 1869 ई. को गुजरात के पोरबंदर नामक स्थान पर हुआ था । इनका पूरा नाम मोहनदास करमचंद गाँधी , पिता का नाम करमचंद तथा माता का नाम पुतलीबाई था । गाँधीजी पर उनकी माता के धार्मिक संस्कारों का प्रभाव पड़ा और पिता से उन्हें न्याय के लिए लड़ने की प्रेरणा मिली ।

वे बचपन से ही सादे विचार तथा सत्यवादी प्रकृति के थे । उनकी स्कूली शिक्षा राजकोट में हुई । बचपन में ही उनका विवाह कस्तुरबा नामक कन्या से हो गया । विवाह के कारण उनकी शिक्षा में कुछ बाधा पड़ी किन्तु परिश्रम करके वे उसी विद्यालय में मैट्रिक तक की पढ़ाई पूरी करने में सफल हुए । इसके बाद उन्होंने इंग्लैंड जाकर वकालत की परीक्षा पास की ।

3. कार्यकलाप:

सन् 1891 ई. में वे भारत लौटे और बम्बई (मुम्बई) में वकालत करने लगे, लेकिन झूठ न बोलने के कारण वे इसमें असफल रहे । इस बात का उन्हें दुःख नहीं था । सन् 1893 ई में एक मुकदमा (case) लेकर वे दक्षिण अफ्रीका गए और जीत हासिल की । वहाँ उन्होंने एक संगठन बनाया और भारतीयों को उनके अधिकार दिलाए ।

फिर सन् 1915 ई. में भारत लौटकर 1919 में कांग्रेस दल की बागडोर (Leadership) संभाली और सन् 1920 ई. से उन्होंने अंग्रेजी अत्याचारों के खिलाफ आन्दोलन तथा समाज सुधार का कार्य आरम्भ कर दिया । असहयोग आन्दोलन ( Non co-operation movement), सविनय अवज्ञा आन्दोलन ( Civil-disobedience movement) तथा भारत छोडो आन्दोलन ( Quit India movement) आदि प्रमुख थे ।

अनेक वर्ष आपने कैद में बिताए और कई बार आमरण-अनशन (Fast unto death) किये । महात्मा गाँधी के अ थक प्रयास से अन्तत; 15 अगस्त 1947 ई. को भारत स्वाधीन हो गया । इसके बाद वे समाज सु धार में लगे रहे किन्तु नाथूराम गोदसे की गोलियों ने 30 जनवरी 1948 को उनके प्राण ले लिए ।

4. उपसंहार:

गाँधीजी के विचारों को याद दिलाने के लिए सरकारी दफ्तरों के सा थ अन्य स्थानों पर भी उनकी तस्वीर लगाई जाती है । उन्हें याद करने से हमारे मन में सत्य ( Truth), सादगी ( Simplicity), आत्मविश्वास ( Self confidence) तथा अच्छे आचरण ( Good conduct) की भावना उत्पन्न होती है ।

यह एडिटोरियल 05/09/2023 को ‘इंडियन एक्सप्रेस’ में प्रकाशित ‘‘One nation, one election: Better for voter, better for citizen’’ पर आधारित है। इसमें लोकसभा और राज्य विधानसभाओं के चुनाव को एक साथ आयोजित कराने के केंद्र सरकार के प्रस्तावित विचार से संबद्ध लाभों एवं चुनौतियों के बारे में चर्चा की गई है।

‘एक देश, एक चुनाव’ (One nation, One election- ONOE) निवर्तमान केंद्र सरकार के एजेंडे में शामिल महत्त्वपूर्ण सुधारों में से एक है। वस्तुतः भारत के पूर्व राष्ट्रपति रामनाथ कोविंद ने जनवरी 2018 में संसद के अपने संबोधन में सरकार द्वारा प्रस्तावित सुधारों में से एक के रूप में इसकी चर्चा भी की थी। उन्होंने कहा था कि नागरिक देश के किसी न किसी हिस्से में बार-बार आयोजित होते रहने वाले चुनावों को लेकर एक चिंता रखते हैं क्योंकि इसका अर्थव्यवस्था और विकास पर प्रतिकूल प्रभाव पड़ता है। प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी भी संपूर्ण देश में एक चुनाव कराये जाने की वांछनीयता पर मुखरता से बात करते रहे हैं। इस प्रकार, यह अचानक से प्रकट हुआ कोई विचार नहीं है, बल्कि इसके बारे में बात होती रही है।

‘एक देश, एक चुनाव’ के पीछे केंद्रीय विचार क्या है?

• ‘एक देश, एक चुनाव’ के पीछे का केंद्रीय विचार यह है कि लोकसभा चुनावों के साथ सभी राज्यों के विधानसभा चुनावों को समक्रमिक या सिंक्रनाइज़ (synchronize) किया जाए ताकि देश भर में चुनावों की आवृत्ति को कम किया जा सके।
• यह चक्र पहली बार वर्ष 1959 में टूटा जब केंद्र ने तत्कालीन केरल सरकार को बर्खास्त करने के लिये अनुच्छेद 356 लागू किया।
• वर्ष 1960 के बाद राजनीतिक दलों के बीच दल-बदल और प्रति-दल-बदल (defections and counter-defections) के कारण कई विधानसभाओं के विघटन की स्थिति बनी, जिसके कारण अंततः लोकसभा और राज्य विधानसभाओं के लिये अलग-अलग चुनाव आयोजित कराने पड़े।
• वर्तमान में, अरुणाचल प्रदेश, सिक्किम, आंध्र प्रदेश और ओडिशा राज्यों में विधानसभा चुनाव लोकसभा चुनाव के साथ आयोजित किये जाते हैं।
• एक साथ चुनाव कराने के विचार का पक्ष समर्थन वर्ष 1999 में बी.पी. जीवन रेड्डी की अध्यक्षता वाले विधि आयोग ने भी किया था।

‘एक देश, एक चुनाव’ के क्या लाभ हैं?

• प्रशासन के विभिन्न स्तरों पर अलग-अलग स्तर की प्रशासनिक अपंगता की स्थिति बन जाती है। यह भारत की विकास संभावनाओं पर नकारात्मक प्रभाव डालती है।
• यहाँ तक कि जब कोई नया नीतिगत निर्णय आवश्यक नहीं होता है, तब भी चुनाव अवधि के दौरान क्रियान्वित परियोजनाओं का कार्यान्वयन पटरी से उतर जाता है क्योंकि राजनीतिक कार्यकारी के साथ-साथ सरकारी अधिकारी भी नियमित प्रशासन की अनदेखी करते हुए चुनाव संबंधी कर्तव्यों में व्यस्त हो जाते हैं।
• एक रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक वर्ष 2019 के लोकसभा चुनाव में 60,000 करोड़ रुपए खर्च हुए।
• निःसंदेह ‘एक देश, एक चुनाव’ अवधारणा पर चुनाव आयोजित कराने हेतु आवश्यक बुनियादी ढाँचा स्थापित करने के लिये चुनाव आयोग को आरंभ में व्यापक धनराशि का निवेश करना होगा।
• इससे नागरिकों के लिये भी आसानी हो जाएगी क्योंकि उन्हें एक बार सूचीबद्ध हो जाने के बाद मतदाता सूची से अपना नाम गायब होने की चिंता से मुक्ति मिलेगी।

Vice President Kamala Harris has tapped Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, capping a historically compressed vice presidential search.

Walz rocketed up the list of finalists on the strength of his folksy relatability, gubernatorial experience and congressional record representing a conservative-leaning district.

“I am proud to announce that I’ve asked @Tim_Walz to be my running mate,” Harris posted on X Aug. 6. “As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his. It’s great to have him on the team. Now let’s get to work.”

Walz rose to the rank of command sergeant major over 24 years in the U.S. Army National Guard and worked as a teacher and football coach. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives by ousting a Republican incumbent in a heavily rural district in 2006. Walz was elected governor in 2018 and was reelected in 2022.

“He’s a smart choice if they deploy him in two specific ways,” said Blois Olson, a political analyst for WCCO radio in Minneapolis-St. Paul. “Send him to rural areas to counter the polarization and the idea that only Republicans can win there. And have him keep the deep left base satisfied, which could be an issue with a very moody voting bloc.”

Olson said Walz’s rural experience and regular-guy vibes might be able to shave 2 to 4 percentage points off GOP electoral performance in rural Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — three states considered crucial to a Democratic victory in November.

“The most recent Survey USA poll taken last month for KSTP-TV had Walz’ job approval at a healthy 56 percent,” said Steve Schier, a political scientist at Carleton College in Minnesota. “That said, Minnesota is quite a polarized state, and Republicans in the state despise him. He initially campaigned as a moderate in 2018 but has governed as a progressive.”

Walz was one of several potential vice presidential options floated since President Joe Biden announced he’d cede the nomination and endorsed Harris. Other frequently cited names were Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Now that he is Harris’ running mate, we are on the lookout for claims by and about Walz to fact-check — just as we are for Harris and former President Donald Trump and his vice presidential pick, Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio. Readers can email us suggestions to [email protected].

Republicans have already begun to question Walz’s handling of the rioting following the murder of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody. Walz clashed with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey over how to handle the unrest, but he sent the Minnesota National Guard to aid local law enforcement.

Who is Tim Walz?

Walz grew up in Nebraska but moved with his wife, Gwen, to Minnesota in 1996 to teach high school geography and coach football; his teams won two state championships.

He was 42 when he ran for Congress, a decision sparked by a 2004 incident at an appearance by President George W. Bush. “Walz took two students to the event, where Bush campaign staffers demanded to know whether he supported the president and barred the students from entering after discovering one had a sticker for Democratic candidate John Kerry,” according to the Almanac of American Politics. “Walz suggested it might be bad PR for the Bush campaign to bar an Army veteran, and he and the students were allowed in. Walz said the experience sparked his interest in politics, first as a volunteer for the Kerry campaign and then as a congressional candidate.”

Walz’s ideological profile is nuanced. The other highest-profile finalist for Harris’ running mate, Shapiro, was pegged as somewhat more moderate and bipartisan than Walz. An Emerson College poll released in July found Shapiro with 49 percent approval overall in his state, including a strong 46 percent approval from independents and 22 percent from Republicans.

When he was elected to Congress, Walz represented a district that had sent Republicans to Washington for 102 of the previous 114 years, according to the Almanac of American Politics. Representing that constituency, Walz was able to win the National Rifle Association’s endorsement and he voted for the Keystone XL pipeline — two positions that have become highly unusual in today’s Democratic Party.

During his first gubernatorial term, Walz worked with legislative Republicans, which produced some bipartisan achievements, including $275 million for roads and bridges, additional funds for opioid treatment and prevention, and a middle-income tax cut.

In 2022, Walz won a second term by a 52 percent to 45 percent margin. Democrats also flipped the state Senate, providing him with unified Democratic control in the Legislature. This enabled Walz to enact a progressive wish list of policies, including classifying abortion as a “fundamental right,” a requirement that utilities produce carbon-free energy by 2040, paid family leave and legalizing recreational marijuana. He also signed an executive order safeguarding access to gender-affirming health care for transgender residents.

After Harris’ announcement, the Trump campaign attacked Walz’s legislative record in a campaign email: “Kamala Harris just doubled-down on her radical vision for America by tapping another left-wing extremist as her VP nominee.”

Olson noted that Walz “only has one veto in six years. He doesn’t say ‘no’ to the left, after being a moderate. That’s a reason he’s now beloved by the left.”

Democrats have controlled the Minnesota state Legislature’s lower chamber during Walz’ entire tenure. However, Republicans controlled the state Senate for his first four years in office.

Walz’s meteoric three-week rise on the national scene stemmed after calling Trump, Vance and other Republicans in their circle “weird.”

In a July 23 interview on MSNBC, Walz predicted that Harris would win older, white voters because she was talking about substance, including schools, jobs and environmental policy.

“These are weird people on the other side,” Walz said. “They want to take books away. They want to be in your exam room. That’s what it comes down to. And don’t, you know, get sugarcoating this. These are weird ideas.”

Days later on MSNBC , Walz reiterated the point: “You know there’s something wrong with people when they talk about freedom. Freedom to be in your bedroom. Freedom to be in your exam room. Freedom to tell your kids what they can read. That stuff is weird. They come across weird. They seem obsessed with this.”

Other Democrats, including the Harris campaign, amplified the “weird” message, quickly making Walz a star in online Democratic circles.

Walz also attracted notice for being a self-styled fix-it guy who has helped pull a car out of a ditch and given advice about how to save money on car repairs . He staged a bill signing for free breakfast and lunch for students surrounded by cheering children .

Schier said he expects Walz to be a compatible ticket-mate who won’t upstage the presidential nominee. “Walz will be a loyal companion to Harris,” Schier said.

One thing Walz does not bring to the table is a critical state for the Democratic ticket. In 2024, election analysts universally rate Minnesota as leaning or likely Democratic. By contrast, Shapiro’s state of Pennsylvania is not only one of a handful of battleground states but also the one with the biggest haul of electoral votes, at 19. Another finalist, Kelly, represents another battleground state with nine electoral votes, Arizona.

Fact-checking Walz

We have not put Walz on our Truth-O-Meter. However, days after Floyd’s murder, we wrote a story about how a false claim about out-of-state protestors was spread by Minnesota officials, including Walz, and then national politicians, including Trump.

At a May 2020 news conference, Walz said he understood that the catalyst for the protests was “Minnesotans’ inability to deal with inequalities, inequities and quite honestly the racism that has persisted.” But there was an issue with “everybody from everywhere else.”

“We’re going to start releasing who some of these people are, and they’ll be able to start tracing that history of where they’re at, and what they’re doing on the ‘dark web’ and how they’re organizing,” Walz said. “I think our best estimate right now that I heard is about 20 percent that are Minnesotans and about 80 percent are outside.”

The statistic soon fell apart.

Within hours, local TV station KARE reported that Minneapolis-based police tallies of those arrested for rioting, unlawful assembly, and burglary-related crimes from May 29 to May 30 showed that 86 percent of those arrested listed Minnesota as their address. Twelve out of 18 people arrested in St. Paul were from Minnesota.

Confronted with these numbers, the officials walked back their comments that evening or did not repeat them. In a news conference, Walz did not repeat his earlier 80 percent assertion. KARE-TV wrote that Walz said the estimate was based in part on law enforcement intelligence information and that the state would monitor developments.

Harris Has Always Identified as Indian American and Black

Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris has only recently begun identifying as Black, and that until a few years ago “she was only promoting Indian heritage.” That’s nonsense.

Harris, whose mother was born in India and whose father is from Jamaica, has always identified as both Indian American and Black.

Trump appears to be trying to resurrect bogus social media claims that gained some traction back in 2020 after Harris was tapped as Joe Biden’s running mate. The posts claimed that when Harris became a senator in 2017, she only identified as an Indian American, and that she only later began identifying as Black for political gain. It was nonsense then, too.

At the annual convention of the National Association of Black Journalists on July 31, ABC News’ Rachel Scott asked Trump if he thought Harris was “only on the ticket because she is a Black woman.”

“So I’ve known her a long time, indirectly, not directly, very much,” Trump said. “And she was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?”

“I respect either one,” Trump continued. “But she obviously doesn’t, because she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn, and she became a Black person. I think someone should look into that, too.”

As we said, there is ample evidence that Harris, now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, has for decades identified as both Indian American and Black, reflecting her biracial parentage.

In her 2019 autobiography, “ The Truths We Hold: An American Journey ,” Harris describes being brought up in a multicultural home. Harris’ parents divorced when she was a young girl, and while her father “remained a part of our lives,” it was “really my mother who took charge of our upbringing,” she wrote.

“Our classical Indian names harked back to our heritage, and we were raised with a strong awareness of and appreciation for Indian culture,” Harris wrote.

But, she added, “My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters. She knew that her adopted homeland would see Maya and me as black girls, and she was determined to make sure we would grow into confident, proud black women.”

A May 25, 2016, profile of Harris in the New York Times Magazine states, “She [Harris’ mother] brought up her daughters, in the late ’60s and early ’70s, in a black neighborhood in Berkeley, sharing a house with a friend who ran a small preschool. ‘She had two black babies, and she raised them to be two black women,’ Harris says of her mother’s choice of community.”

In her autobiography, Harris recounted as a child regularly attending a “pioneering black cultural center” that held performances by “some of the most prominent black thinkers and leaders of the day.” Some of her greatest heroes, she said, were African American lawyers “Thurgood Marshall, Charles Hamilton Houston, Constance Baker Motley – giants of the civil rights movement.”

Following the example of Marshall, who went to law school at Howard University, Harris also decided to attend the historically Black university in Washington, D.C., as an undergraduate. At Howard, Harris joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, which bills itself as “America’s premier Greek-letter organization for African American women.”

An alumni profile of Harris in Howard Magazine in the fall of 2016 noted that Harris was “reared by her mother, a scientist and immigrant from India” and that “Harris said being on Howard’s campus ‘during those formative years’ was central to her development as a Black person.”

After graduating from Howard in 1986, Harris returned to Oakland, California, and went to law school at UC Hastings College of Law (now UC San Francisco Law ).

At UC Hastings, she wrote in her autobiography, “I was elected president of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) during my second year in law school. At the time, black students were having a harder time finding employment than white students, and I wanted to change that. As BLSA president, I called the managing partners of all the major law firms and asked them to send representatives to a job fair we were hosting at a hotel.”

While serving in the U.S. Senate, Harris was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus .

On occasions when she has spoken before a largely Indian American audience, she has sometimes emphasized that part of her heritage — as one would expect. Speaking at the Indian American Impact Summit in May, for example, Harris talked about her Indian heritage while encouraging Indian Americans to participate in the political process and to run for elected office.

“You are going to find yourself, invariably, in rooms where you are the only one who looks like you,” Harris said to the predominantly Indian American audience. “And what I then say to you each, look around this room and hold on to this image. And remember then when you walk into those rooms … you remember you are not alone, we are all there with you.”

Trump and Campaign Double Down on Falsehood

At a Trump rally in Pennsylvania after his remarks at the NABJ convention, the campaign posted on a large video screen behind the stage the headline of a Nov. 9, 2016, AP story that Business Insider published, that read, “California’s Kamala Harris becomes first Indian-American US senator.”

That’s entirely accurate, of course. She was.

An AP story published the same day, Nov. 9, 2016, presents a more complete description, stating, “Harris will enter the chamber as the first Indian woman elected to a Senate seat and the second black woman, following Carol Moseley Braun, who served a single term after being elected in 1992.”

Similarly, when Harris was elected as San Francisco district attorney in December 2003, the Associated Press reported, “Harris, a former girlfriend and political protégé of Mayor Willie Brown, will be the first female district attorney in the city’s history and the first black to hold the office in California.” A month later, Jet magazine ran a story under the headline, “Kamala Harris is San Francisco’s First Black District Attorney.” Both stories were obtained from the news archives, LexisNexis.

After Trump made his comments, conservative commentator Laura Loomer posted on X a reprint of Harris’ birth certificate and wrongly claimed it proved Harris is “a liar” and that “Donald Trump is correct. Kamala Harris is NOT black and never has been.” Loomer noted, “Nowhere on her birth certificate does it say that she is BLACK OR AFRICAN.”

That last part is true. According to a copy of Harris’ birth certificate posted by the Mercury News in August 2020, Harris’ race is not recorded — because there is no box for it. The certificate notes that Harris’ mother, who was living in Berkeley, California, was born in India. Where the certificate form asks for the “color or race of mother,” it is marked “Caucasian.”

That’s not surprising. A 1995 document from the Office of Management and Budget titled “ Standards for the Classification of Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity ” notes that in decennial censuses, “There have been many changes in the broad racial categories, the specific components of the categories, and whether data on ethnicity were collected. Asian Indians, for example, were counted as ‘Hindus’ in censuses from 1920 to 1940, as ‘White’ from 1950 to 1970, and as ‘Asians or Pacific Islanders’ in 1980 and 1990.” Harris’ birth certificate is from her birth year, 1964. She was born in Oakland.

Under the “color or race of father,” the certificate states, “Jamaican.” The form also notes that Harris’ father, Donald J. Harris, is a native of Jamaica. While the birth certificate makes no note of it, Donald Harris is Black.

In other words, Kamala Harris is both Indian American and Black.

Trump amplified Loomer’s bogus post by re-posting it on his social media platform. He also posted an old photo of Harris with Indian relatives in traditional Indian garb. Trump commented, “Your warmth, friendship, and love of your Indian Heritage are very much appreciated.”

Additionally, Trump posted a recent cooking video Harris made with Indian American actress Mindy Kaling. Trump commented, “Crazy Kamala is saying she’s Indian, not Black. This is a big deal. Stone cold phony. She uses everybody, including her racial identity!”

In the video, Kaling asks, “You are Indian?” to which Harris enthusiastically replies, “Yes, yes.”

“I don’t know that everybody knows that,” Kaling says. Moments later, when Kaling notes that they both have family from south India, Harris replies, “You look like the entire one-half of my family.” And that line is exactly the point. It is a part of her heritage from her mother’s side.

In a February 2019 interview with a morning radio show called “ The Breakfast Club ,” Harris addressed  questions about the “legitimacy” of her blackness. “I think they don’t understand who Black people are,” she said. “Because if you do, if you walked on Hampton’s campus, or Howard’s campus or Morehouse, or Spelman or Fisk, you would have a much better appreciation for the diaspora, for the diversity, for the beauty in the diversity of who we are as Black people. So I’m not going to spend my time trying to educate people about who Black people are.”

In remarks at a convention for the Black sorority Sigma Gamma Rho, Harris addressed Trump’s claims at the NABJ event, saying “it was the same old show — the divisiveness and the disrespect.”
