1. Commonwealth Scholarship
Each year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission invites each nominating agency, university, or university body to forward a specific number of nominations for the Commonwealth scholarship for developing countries. Each nominating agency/university body is responsible for its own selection process, and in most cases they will set a closing date in the months preceding the CSC’s deadline for nominations.

2. Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarships, set up by the Department for International Development (DFID) in 1986, represent a unique partnership between the United Kingdom government and UK universities. To date, more than 3,500 students from developing Commonwealth countries have been awarded shared scholarships.

3. Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships
Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships support one year’s study at a UK university as part of a PhD being undertaken in your home country, under joint supervision of a home country and UK supervisor.

4. Commonwealth Professional Fellowships for Commonwealth Developing Countries
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission offers the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships to support mid-career professionals from developing Commonwealth countries to spend a period of time with a UK host organization working in their field for a program of professional development. Fellowships are typically three months but can be between one and six months in length and can include limited time for attendance at short courses or conferences, as well as visits to other organizations.

5. Chevening Scholarships for Commonwealth Countries
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship programme was established in 1983 and is now an internationally prestigious scheme with over 41,000 alumni. Chevening Scholarships are currently offered in approximately 110 countries. Chevening awards enable scholars to study a one-year postgraduate master’s course in any discipline at any UK university.

6. Africa Graduate Scholarships at UCL
The scholarships exist to support African nationals with a high-quality academic and professional background who would not be able to study at UCL without financial assistance. The scholarship is a one-off award for the academic year September-September to study at the UCL Institute for Global Health.

The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) group is offering 10 graduate students the chance to study for a Masters qualification at a UK university from September 2014. 10. Irish Aid Postgraduate Fellowships
Irish Aid Fellowships are awarded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and are targeted mainly at the countries in which Ireland has established development cooperation programs: Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam, plus the Palestinian territories.

11. Masters: Africa London Nagasaki (ALN) scholarship fund for African scientists
The Africa London Nagasaki (ALN) scholarship fund supports African scientists wishing to undertake a Master’s degree related to the control of infectious diseases in Africa. Each year, up to four scientists will receive up to a maximum award of US$50,000 each to cover tuition fees, travel, and living expenses.

15. Full Beit Trust Scholarship for Students from Malawi, Zambia, or Zimbabwe
The Beit Trust offers, annually, a small number of scholarships abroad for postgraduate studies or research to graduates who are domiciled in Malawi, Zambia, or Zimbabwe (the beneficial area). 17. Sir Richard Stapley Educational Trust Scholarships for Undergraduate Students in Medical Fields & Postgraduate Students in All Fields

19. Funds for Women Graduates Grants for PhD/Doctoral Study & Research
Funds for Women Graduates: FfWG offers Foundation Grants to help women graduates with their living expenses (not fees) while registered for study or research at an approved institution of higher education in Great Britain. 20. Windle Trust International Scholarship
Windle Trust International provides access to education and training for those affected by conflict in Africa. The Trust awards scholarships to youths and refugees in Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia to study in Africa. 21. UN-Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme in Ocean Affairs for Coastal Developing Countries
The UN-Nippon Fellowship Programme is funded by the Nippon Foundation of Japan and implemented by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DAOLOS), with the assistance of the Training and Fellowships Section of the United Nations Division for Economic and Social Affairs.

22. Eni Scholarship at the University of Oxford
St Antony’s College Oxford, in partnership with the international integrated energy company Eni, offers three students from African universities in Angola, Ghana, and Nigeria the opportunity of fully funded scholarships, including fees and living expenses, to undertake postgraduate study at the Master’s level at the University of Oxford, UK. 24. Reach Oxford Scholarships for Low Income Countries
A number of Oxford colleges offer Reach Oxford scholarships (formerly Oxford Student Scholarships) to students from low income countries who, for political or financial reasons, or because standard educational facilities do not exist, cannot study for a degree in their own countries. Scholarship winners will study at the University of Oxford, UK, under any undergraduate course of study, except medicine, due to the course length and expense.

27. Oppenheimer Fund Scholarships for South African Students
Harry Frederick Oppenheimer was a noted South African businessman, philanthropist, and opponent of apartheid. In 1993, he endowed the Oppenheimer Fund at the University of Oxford. The Fund promotes links between the University of Oxford and South African universities. It does this by supporting academic exchanges between Oxford and South Africa and assisting students ordinarily resident in South Africa wishing to pursue graduate study at Oxford.

31. Waverley Fund Scholarship in African Studies
The Waverley Fund will award scholarships in the academic year for Masters (MSc) in African Studies to academically excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have shown the potential to make a significant contribution in their future careers. 32. Polonsky Foundation Grants for International Graduate Students

33. Mica and Ahmet Ertegun Graduate Scholarships Programme—Humanities
The University of Oxford has established the Mica and Ahmet Ertegun Graduate Scholarship Programme in the Humanities with 15 scholarships a year and will eventually be endowed in perpetuity to award at least 35 graduate humanities scholarships annually.

The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Scholarship (OCISS) was established to allow Muslim graduates to pursue postgraduate degrees in study of benefit to the Muslim world. The Center provides a meeting point for the western and Islamic worlds of learning.

36. Gates Cambridge Scholarships
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive full-cost scholarships. 38. Microsoft Research PhD Scholarships Programme
The Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) was launched in 2004 and has so far supported more than 200 PhD students across the region. Each year by September, PhD supervisors from academic institutions in EMEA submit their proposals for collaborative research projects with Microsoft Research Cambridge.

40. Mandela Magdalene College Scholarship for South Africa
The Mandela Magdalene College Scholarships were announced in March 1995 when Nelson Mandela, then President of the Republic of South Africa, agreed to lend his name to the initiative. The scheme results from collaboration between Mr. Chris von Christierson and other benefactors, the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and Magdalene College, Cambridge.

42. Rwanda Cambridge Masters & PhD Scholarships
The Ministry of Education, Rwanda, and the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust have agreed to offer postgraduate scholarships for Rwandan students to study at the University of Cambridge in the UK. 58. Julius Nyerere Masters Scholarship in UK for Tanzanian Students
The Julius Nyerere Scholarship was set up in memory of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who led Tanzania to independence in 1961 and became the first prime minister and later president of Tanzania. Nyerere received a scholarship in 1949 to attend the University of Edinburgh, where he obtained a Masters of Arts degree that saw him study courses in English, Political Economy, Social Anthropology, British History, Economic History, Constitutional Law, and Moral Philosophy.

Study at Cambridge (Scholarships)
Information for africans applying to study at the university of cambridge .
Applications can be submitted by individuals who would like to study for degrees at the University of Cambridge. To apply for postgraduate courses at the University of Cambridge, you must submit an online application through the Applicant Portal. For undergraduate courses submit an application through the UCAS portal (along with the My Cambridge Application form). The list of undergraduate and postgraduate courses are listed on the following websites which also have links to the application process and advice on applying to the University of Cambridge.

Note: Charge for accessing the graduate application form
There is an application charge of (GBP sterling) £50 per application for postgraduate courses other than doctorate programmes , unless you are from a (low-income) country which is eligible for fee waiver . A list of other eligible courses and further information can be found at https://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/how-do-i-apply/application-fee . You can make the payment by providing your credit card details to a secure server when you submit your online application. Apparently, there are alternatives to the credit card payment, and this is available on request from the Graduate Admissions Office , if people come from countries where credit cards are not used.
Scholarships Available for African Applicants to Study at the University of Cambridge
To be considered for funding from the main scholarship providers, you must complete the funding section of the relevant application form (undergraduate or graduate) and submit to the University of Cambridge by the following deadlines:
- Undergraduate applications - Deadline to be announced but usually in early October
- Graduate applications - Open now for application but best to check specific course deadlines. Search the course directory for more information. Some deadlines are as early as mid-November (LLM Law) and there will be two general course deadlines in December 2024 and January 2025 .

1) Gates Cambridge Scholarships: https://www.gatescambridge.org/apply
2) Cambridge Trust Scholarships: https://www.cambridgetrust.org/scholarships . Do note that there is a searchable facility on this website that can help to narrow down available scholarships by country, degree level, subject and the Cambridge College, etc. These are now open for applications.
3) Various Cambridge College bursaries (see examples below)
4) Mastercard Foundation African Scholars Programme https://www.mastercardfoundation.fund.cam.ac.uk/ The prestigious Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cambridge was established in 2022 as a collaboration between the University and the Mastercard Foundation. Over 500 Scholars from the African continent will be enrolled in the program between 2023 and 2030 to undertake a wide range of fully funded Master's courses contributing to climate resilience and sustainable futures in Africa.

To be considered for funding, complete the standard University Graduate Students' Application Form and complete the 'funding' section. You can then be considered for all scholarships you are eligible to apply for. The deadline for Cambridge-Trust scholarships is usually the first week in December.
