The film Chakka Panja revolves around four friends in a village – Raja (Deepak Raj Giri), Magne (Kedar Ghimire) , Saraswati (Jeetu Nepal) & Buddhi (Buddhi Tamang). Raja is rich but illiterate and enjoys his life and tells his friends to not get married or hold nay jobs. However he secretly has affairs with married women.

Then one day Raja gets married to Champa (Priyanka Karki), and the story enters a serious mode when Champa elopes with someone else. The lives of Raja and his friends are turned upside down. Chakka Panja is a total comedy and social drama , a story of friendship , love and revenge. It is hilarious from start to end. With comedy and satire on society, it ‘is’ funny and takes you to Raja’s Land.

Deepa Shree Niraula as the debutant director has done a good job. The storyline and setting is nothing new, but the way it has been presented is different, hence refreshing. Girl’s look resembles that of Govinda’s in the bollywood film Raja Babu . Except for Dayahang Rai and Sitaram Kattel (Dhurmus) of Wada No.6 , the other characters are the same. One may see these characters regularly on television, but the director has presented these characters in new avatars.

The first half of the film moves with Giri and his friends’ mischievous acts and social problems of society — leaving one’s wife to work in a foreign country , unemployment, society’s culture to show off, poverty, domestic violence and so on. In the middle of the second-half, the story takes a turn surprising the audience with its terrific ending.

Giri justifies his role as Raja. His cunning nature, Raja Babu style get-up and perfect comedy timing steal audience’s heart as Raja. Karki as Champa and Poudel as the mystery man do a decent job. Nepal & Ghimire tickle your funny bone with their gags and humor. Tamang as the coward husband is apt and really funny. Aruna Karki as the tigress wife Devi’s natural. Aryan Sigdel in a cameo as an NRN is treat to watch.

The songs Purba Paschim Rail & Dekhana Champa Sunanana Champa – Rajan Raj Shiwakoti and Deepak Sharmas composition – will thrill you. The background score is awesome.

There is a limit to how much you can laugh in a movie that looks at the lighter side of migration and its bleak reality. The scenes begin to weigh heavily on your conscience.

Revolving around the lives of five unemployed men in an unidentified village, Deepa Shree Niraula ’s directorial debut, Chhakka Panja , never gets out of its weak plot and odd jokes. Despite its popular cast and characteristic comic one-liners, it is as if this is too serious a subject to be laughing about.

Deepak Raj Giri , who plays Raja, comes from a noticeably affluent family in a largely unemployed, poverty-stricken village during the post-conflict years. His three minions (Magne, Saraswati and Buddhi) played by Kedar Ghimire , Jetu Nepal and Buddhi Tamang respectively, and himself spend most days at the nearby bhatti playing board games and reassuring each other of reasons to remain unmarried, mostly because they do not have the means to support a wife. They drink their worries away, make jokes about the only married (and hen-pecked) friend Buddhi, and watch on as most male members of the village leave for the Gulf or Malaysia, or win a DV lottery visa to the land of dreams and opportunities.

As the movie progresses, the four friends are predictably pulled out from their cocoons and dragged into reality. Each of them either finds love, goes abroad for work or both. And while in most movies, this would have been the ‘happy ending’ that ties all loose ends together Chhakka Panja goes on to show viewers the lack of assurance any of this provides in a corrupt, chaotic state that cannot give jobs to its people, forcing them to leave the country.

The fact that this movie has lasted five weeks in cinemas amidst all the festivities does set it apart from other Nepali films of its kind. Chhakka Panja has the usual flaws: the transition between scenes is blotchy, characters and their trademark one-liners are unoriginal, the plot has loopholes, but what grates most is the trivialisation of hard-hitting issues that plague our society and country.

And while it has been categorised as social satire and you’re probably expected to take it all in good humour, some in the audience are left feeling bitter and guilty about having laughed at the pun on KC after you see Magne and his colleagues - One kidney less, but with a visible scar to remind them of the poverty they’ve been born into and the sacrifices they’ve had to make to survive.

Jokes are made, songs sung and dances danced and it all comes across as escapism during the festival. While the audience in the cinema breaks into guffaws, you are left curling in your seat with distress because the humour invariably wilts. We leave the hall wiping tears not of laughter, but of the tragic reality of a visionless state, corrupt politicians and the feeling of impending doom.

Chhakka Panja 2 movie review: Comical take on a serious issue

Actor-turned-director Deepa Shree Niraula is back with Chhakka Panja 2, a ‘sequel’ to her movie with the same name released last year.

You may be wondering whether you might need to know the plot from the first part to understand its sequel but worry not! The stories are completely different. While the first part deals with the issue of foreign employment, the sequel deals with issues that appeal more to the younger generation.

To begin with, the movie has humour, a catchy song and fun-filled moments, and deals with an issue contemporary to urban Nepali society today. It shows how the younger generation is not hesitant even to opt for extreme measures such as fake weddings to get a visa to their dream destinations. It also shows how the surge of ‘educational consultancies’ all over the country are making their quick buck.

The story opens in a village in the hills of western Nepal where we are introduced to three friends Prajwol (Swaroop P Dhakal), Saraswati (Jitu Nepal) and Gaurav (Gaurav Pahari). Gaurav is betrayed by his newly-wed wife and returns to the US, from where he came home to wed the girl his parents had chosen for him. Saraswati decides to move to Kathmandu to prepare for his Lok Sewa (Public Service) exam along with Prajwol, an ambitious young man aspiring to go to Australia.

In Kathmandu are Akansha (Swastima Khadka), a bubbly and stubborn city girl struggling with her IELTS exams, and her wild best friend Brinda played by Barsha Raut. You would be surprised to know that Priyanka Karki is not playing the exuberant young girl role she generally plays. Instead, she is Akansha’s strict mom, Uma, a well-established lawyer dealing with all her daughter’s shenanigans.

Kedar Ghimire (Magne Budha) is another character in the movie who never fails to make you smirk and giggle with his regular halka ramailo . His presence brings joy to the audience and life into the movie. He plays the role of a cunning ‘consultant’ who takes pride in what he does. He is the brains behind the illegal business of fake weddings.

With guidance from Magne Budha, Akansha decides to enter into a ‘paper marriage’ with Prajwol,  who has a better IELTS score, but does not have money to make it to Australia. Their seemingly simple plan of flying to Australia takes twists and turns as other characters join in. In the end, the story evolves into a tale of a series of deceits.

The movie is jam-packed with fun-loving characters with comic roles who make every moment lively. Although you may find some scenes especially in the second half a bit dragged, the climax compensates for that.

Although both instalments of the movie set a new bar for cinematography in the Nepali film industry, there are many things that the film falls short on. For some members of the audience, the movie is just a collection of old jokes that are no longer funny. Similarly, the characters in the movie preach a lot about things that have divided opinions. Priyanka Karki’s rant about Nepali youngsters leaving the country and not coming back maybe a case in point.

Well, for a movie that is aimed at the mass audience, the discerning viewer is always going to be left wondering.
