Ask HMRC online

Ask HMRC’s digital assistant to find information about:

  • claiming a tax refund
  • proof of employment history

If the digital assistant cannot help you, you can ask to transfer to an HMRC adviser if they’re available.

Tell HMRC about changes that could affect your tax code

This service is part of the personal tax account , and you can use it to check:

  • your tax code
  • the information HMRC holds about your employment
  • an estimate of how much tax you’ll pay

Check when you can expect a reply from HMRC

Find out when you can expect to receive a reply from HMRC to a query or request you’ve made.

If HMRC needs to contact you about anything confidential they’ll reply by phone or post.

If you think you have overpaid tax

Before you contact us you can:

  • find out more about tax overpayments and underpayments
  • check how much Income Tax you should have paid in a previous tax year
  • see if you can claim a refund

Call HMRC for help with:

  • tax overpayments or underpayments
  • a P800 tax calculation — find out more about tax overpayments and underpayments
  • identification and verification problems if you’re trying to register for a personal tax account
  • making a backdated claim if your spouse or civil partner has died
  • applying for Marriage Allowance if you do not have a National Insurance number, because you do not intend to work or study in the UK
  • cancelling your claim
  • questions about tax on savings income (including refunds)
  • general enquiries about Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs)

Have your National Insurance number with you when you phone.

Before you call

This helpline uses speech recognition software, so you will be asked why you are calling HMRC. If you cannot use speech recognition software, find out how to get help from HMRC if you need extra support .

This helpline may also ask you some security questions. Make sure your personal details and address are up to date in your personal tax account or you could fail telephone security. If you do not have a personal tax account, you can create one before you check your details.

HMRC may ask if you want to add voice identification to your account. You can find out more in the Voice Identification Privacy Notice .
