Remarks by President   Biden to Commemorate World AIDS Day, Launch the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, and Kick Off the Global Fund Replenishment Process

3:16 P.M. EST   THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you.  Please, sit down.  Mom, come on up here a minute.  Come on.  (Laughter.)  I want you to meet Gabe’s mom, who I still believe is more like his sister — (laughter) — than his mom.  She is the inspiration.  She is the reason why this young man has done such incredible things.    And it’s a simple lesson — my mother always told me: Listen to your mom.  (Laughter.)    MS. WHEELER-LARA:  Yes.    THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you.  Thank you.  You deserve a great deal of praise.  Thank you.  (Applause.)   MS. WHEELER-LARA:  Thank you so much.  Thank you.     THE PRESIDENT:  And one other thing before I begin my formal remarks.  I look out in the audience and I see so many people who’ve been in this battle for so long.  But the one person who I know from personal experience — having been here for more than 40 years — who has been a champion when it was viewed as political suicide to be a champion was the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.  (Applause.)  Nancy, stand up.  Stand up.    There was many others behind her as well.  But, Nancy — not a joke — you were the one who started that fight in a way that you took it on with such passion.  And it wasn’t — it was not — it was viewed as a political death sentence to take this issue on at the time.  But you did it.  You fundamentally changed the way we looked at this.  You even got George Bush to lead on this, too.  (Laughter.)   No, but all kidding aside, you — I just want to personally, in front of all these people and all the world, thank you for your incredible work.   Ladies and gentlemen, I’m also joined by the Second Gentleman.  He is a hell of a lawyer.  (Laughter.)  And I thank him for being here.   And, Mr. Secretary, thank you for your leadership of HHS.   I — and I want to thank Gabe for sharing his story, because — you know, you committed your life to this work, Gabe.  I don’t know whether you had that plan when you began it, but it’s amazing what you’ve done.  It’s amazing what one person can do.  It’s an honor to meet with you both and to learn more about the work you’re doing together to support your community.   Folks, we’re also joined today by many who have been part of this effort for decades, including Dr. Fauci, who is — I — he’s all things to — (applause) — Doc, you’re the best.  And you never walk away from an issue or a problem.  Thank you.    And to all of you who have contributed so much to this mission of advocating for better prevention services for those at risk of getting HIV and improved care services; and living with HIV, breaking down the stigma, and from — and the disinformation that still exists around HIV/AIDS, I want to thank you — thank you for your voices and for putting your hearts into your work.  Because that’s what you do, you put your hearts into the work, and people can tell.     It’s because of all of you and the dedication of scientists and activists around the world that we’ve been able to dramatically reduce new HIV transmissions and make individuals with HIV today lead long and healthy lives.     And, you know, it’s because of the persistence and the resilience of the HIV community that we’ve changed so much about the way we approach healthcare, research, and equitable access to services — even the relationship between patients and healthcare providers.   You know, and it’s because of you — and it’s not hyperbole to suggest it — that we are within a striking distance of eliminating HIV transmission.  Within striking distance.  (Applause.)    And I think everybody but Nancy couldn’t have imagined this — us being there 40 years ago.  But the fact is that when the CDC reported the first cases that — of what we now know as AIDS.   It’s something that we couldn’t fully imagine even 20 years ago before the landmark investments that the United States made through PEPFAR and — President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.   But you made it possible.  You made it possible.  And I want to take this moment on this historic anniversary to acknowledge the incredible passion and the work that got us here.  Because I know — I know that so many of you — for so many of you, this is personal.    Today, we once more raise a two-story-tall red ribbon on the North Portico of the White House to remember how far we’ve come, the work we have left to finish, and so we never forget the price — the price that’s paid all along the way.   And so many of you know and have relations with people who have — whether they’re family members or friends that you’ve watched them, in the past, whither way.    In the past four decades, as has been mentioned, an estimated 36 million people — 36 million people, including more than 700,000 here in the United States, have died of AIDS-related illnesses.    Think about that.  That many people — more than almost all the modern wars combined — all the wars combined.    Here at home, we saw entire communities devastated by this disease, particularly among the LGBTQ+ individuals and members of racial and ethnic minority groups that Gabe has already spoken to.  And a generation that endured the brunt — the brunt of this epidemic: losing friends, loved ones, family members, partners — instead of being seen and being recognized.

And I can recall — if you excuse the point of personal privilege — being, I think, in this very room when a senator who — he’s deceased now, so I don’t want to mention his name because he can’t defend himself — but standing up and saying, along with another guy named Jerry Falwell, this is “God’s punishment.”  I’m paraphrasing it.  “God’s punishment.  Finally.”

Think how much has changed.  I mean, back in those days, the willingness of other members of the Senate and the House to stand up and take him on was — Nancy was there.  Many of you were there.  But it wasn’t a universal thing.  Wasn’t a universal thing.

But you all demanded — demanded to be treated with dignity and with equity.  Those voices, those stories are invaluable.    As we recommit ourselves to finishing the fight — that we are going to make these individuals living with AIDS and are helping them drive and inform our efforts at every step of the way, because we’re going to finish this fight.

And so, when my administration came to office, not only — not only did we reestablish the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, which — (applause) — it’s hard to believe.

I don’t deserve any cred- — that was the easiest possible thing to do.  (Laughter.)  No, I really mean it.  Think about it.  Think about it.  That it gets a round of applause in the year 2021 when we say that.  I mean, it — it should have never, ever — well, any- — well, I don’t want to get into that.  But, anyway.  (Laughter.)

And I’ve asked Harold Phillips to lead our efforts.  Harold — (applause) — stand up, Harold.  (Applause.)Harold, I think they know you.  (Laughter.)

Harold has dedicated — he has decades of experience working with — to end AIDS, the HIV epidemic.  And I want to thank him for his leadership and willingness to — to join the administration, and releasing the National HIV/AIDS Strategy for 2022 to 2025.  That’s — that’s what he’s doing.    It’s a roadmap for how we’re going to put our foot on the gas and accelerate our efforts to end the HIV epidemic in the United States by the year 2030.  That’s the goal.  (Applause.)     And it centers on the kind of innovative, community solutions — community-driven solutions that we know will work.   It’s a plan to make sure that the latest — the latest advances in HIV prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are available to everyone, regardless of their age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or other factors.   It shouldn’t matter where you live in the country or how much money you make or how you respond or how we — we have to respond across the board to the HIV epidemic everywhere and support all people living with HIV.   And, critically, this strategy takes on racial and gender disparities in our health system that for much too long have affected HIV outcomes in our country — to ensure that our national response is a truly equitable response.   So, we’re going to take aggressive action and back it up.  We’ve asked Congress for $670 million — an historic budget request — for the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the United States initiative.  And I’m confident we’re going to get that done.  Right, team?  (Applause.)   We’ve got some great congressional champions for this work here today, starting with a woman who, as I said — I’ve already mentioned, as she — a leader on the issue from the moment she set foot in Congress, starting with Nancy.   But also Representative Barbara Lee.  Barbara Lee, please. (Applause.)  Maxine Waters.  (Applause.)  I learned a long time ago, when Maxine says, “I have an idea,” just say “yes”.  (Laughter.)  Just say “yes.”    And Sean Patrick Maloney.  Sean.  (Applause.)  Jenniffer –- David Cicilline.  David.  (Applause.)  And Jenniffer González-Colon.  (Applause.)    Thanks for all you’re doing.  I really — I was going to say — not for your support — this is sui generis with all of you.  You’re just incredibly committed to this.   And it’s an issue that has a long history of bipartisan support, so I’m looking forward to working across the aisle, God willing.   I want make sure that everyone in the United States knows their HIV status, that everyone with HIV receives high-quality care and treatment that they deserve, and that we end the harmful stigma around HIV and AIDS.  (Applause.)    In particular, there is still a large number of states with HI- — that have HIV criminalization laws that do not reflect an accurate understanding of HIV.   For example — (applause) — HIV cannot be transmitted through saliva.  There are still laws on the books that criminalize spitting by people with HIV.  I mean, this is 2021, the United States of America.   But we have to follow science, and that means eliminating the laws that perpetuate discrimination, exacerbate disparities, discourage HIV testing, and take us further away from our goal.  We can do this.   And as we accelerate our efforts at home, we’re not going to let up on the efforts to fa- — fight HIV/AIDS globally.     Leading the reauthorization of PEPFAR in 2008 was among the highlights of my time as Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.  And at the time — (applause) –- and by the way, I was not one of the great leaders in this.  I — I always supported the effort, but it wasn’t –- it was because I was chairman of the committee.    And believe it or not, there was a Republican President — and I’m not being a wise guy when I say this — who pushed for PEPFAR.  There is an undeniable proof of the good that American leadership and innovation can achieve in the world when we commit to it.  We have a moral obligation to do that and continue.   Since President Bush launched PEPFAR in 2003, we’ve saved more than 21 million lives.  (Applause.)  We’ve prevented –- (applause) — we’ve prevented millions of HIV infections.  And we’ve helped at least 20 countries bring their HIV epidemics under control or reach their U.N. AIDS 90-90-90 treatment targets.  That means 90 percent of the people living with HIV in a country will know their HIV status; 90 percent of HIV-positive individuals are able to access treatment; and 90 percent of those receiving treatment for HIV will have — will have suppressed viral loads.   That’s within our power.  We’re doing that.    And though PEPFAR — through PEPFAR, the United States will support nearly 19 million men, women, and children with lifesaving HIV treatment.  It’s an incredible, incredible achievement.    Those are not only lives saved though.  They are -– they’re  communities that are strengthened by the –- by the talents and contributions of HIV-positive individuals who are here today leading productive lives and leading the community because of what you’ve all done.   And as we have faced COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve also reaped additional benefits from our decades-long investment in strengthening health systems around the world through PEPFAR.   Working through the CDC and USAID, PEPFAR supports more than 70,000 case — care facilities, 3,000 laboratories, and nearly 300,000 healthcare workers across 55 countries, all of which have been vital in supporting the global fight against COVID-19.   By strengthening countries’ abilities to fight AIDS, we’ve also improved our collective ability to fight other diseases.   And I want to thank and recognize a guy that I can’t believe all he has done: Dr. John — John Nkenga- — Nkengasong.  Nkengasong.  I apologize, Doc.  (Applause.)  And, Doc — Doc Nkengasong, stand up.  And, Doc — Doc — Dr. Nkengasong, you can call me “Joe Bidden.”  (Laughter.)    But you’re helping lead the important work of Omicron variant in this current role as Director of Africa’s CDC and who is my nominee for Ambassador-at-Large to oversee PEPFAR — (applause) — and our global efforts to conbay [sic] — combat HIV.   I understand you’re joined by Peter Sands.  Peter, stand up, will you?  (Applause.)  The Executive Director — the Executive Director of the Global Fund.   This year marks 20 years of the Global Fund, and the United States is proud to be both a founding member of the Fund and the largest contributor.  And the United States is looking forward to hosting the Global Fund’s Seventh Replenishment Conference next year here.  And so, thank you.  (Applause.)    We still have a difficult road ahead of us — we can’t kid ourselves — particularly, addressing the disparities we see both domestically and globally, including the impact of high transmission rates among adolescent girls and young women.   And today, as we look back on the past 40 years, where there has been so much pain and suffering, it’s a testament to all — all the hard work represented in this room and around the world that we are gathered today with hope in our hearts and for the future that’s within our grasp.   We can do this.  We can do this.  We can eliminate HIV transmission.  We can get the epidemic under control here in the United States and in countries around the world.   We have the scientific understanding, we have the treatments, and we have the tools we need.   We’re going to engage with people with live — with lived experience with HIV and ensure that our efforts are appropriate and effective, and centered around the needs of the HIV community.  Not (inaudible) — centered around the needs of the community.   And folks, together, we’re going to save lives.  I can imagine no higher calling to which we could be dedicated than our commitment to save lives.  And this is the one area where we can get a lot more done quickly.   So, I want to thank you all again.  I’m honored to be with you today.  And this is one heck of a group of people who have hearts that are as big as their heads.  And thank God. (Laughter.)  Thank God.  Have in those beautiful skulls so much knowledge and capacity.  (Laughter and applause.)   So, thank you, thank you, thank you.  (Applause.)  Anyway, thanks.   3:33 P.M. EST

WATCH: President Joe Biden delivers remarks to mark World AIDS Day

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Wednesday unveiled his new HIV/AIDS strategy to end the more than 40-year-old epidemic, calling for a renewed focus on vulnerable Americans — including gay and bisexual Black and Latino men, who his administration says are too often stigmatized even as they are disproportionately affected.

Watch in the player above.

The new strategy, which declares racism a “public health threat,” was released on the annual commemoration of World AIDS Day. It is meant to serve as a framework for how the administration shapes its policies, research, programs and planning over the next three years.

But Biden acknowledged that the country still needs to work to destigmatize HIV/AIDS and noted that LGBT and racial minority groups have “endured the brunt” of the epidemic that’s killed more than 36 million worldwide, including 700,000 Americans.

“I want to make sure that everyone in the United States knows their HIV status, and everyone with HIV receives high-quality care and treatment that they deserve and that we end the harmful stigma around HIV and AIDS,” Biden said.

The new strategy asserts that over generations “structural inequities have resulted in racial and ethnic health disparities that are severe, far-reaching, and unacceptable.”

New HIV infections in the U.S. fell about 8% from 2015 to 2019, but Black and Latino communities — particularly gay and bisexual men within those groups — continue to be disproportionately affected, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

African Americans make up about 13% of the U.S. population but accounted for more than 40% of new infections. The Latino population accounted for nearly 25% of new infections but makes up about 18.5% of the U.S. population.

Historically, gay and bisexual men have been the most disproportionately affected group. They account for about 66% of new HIV infections, even though they are only 2% of the population, according to the CDC. In 2019, 26% of new HIV infections were among Black gay and bisexual men, 23% among Latino gay and bisexual men, and 45% among gay and bisexual men under the age of 35.

Disparities also persist among women. Black women’s HIV infection rate is 11 times that of white women and four times that of Latina women.

To reduce the disparities, the strategy includes calls for focusing on the needs of disproportionately affected populations, supporting racial justice, combating HIV-related stigma and discrimination and providing leadership and employment opportunities for people with or at risk for HIV.

Besides addressing racism’s impact on Americans battling the virus or at risk of contracting it, the new strategy also puts greater emphasis on harm reduction and syringe service programs, encourages reform of state laws that criminalize behavior of people with HIV for potentially exposing others and adds focus on the needs of the growing population of people with HIV who are aging.

Biden expressed disbelief that some states have laws on the book that criminalize spitting in public by HIV-positive people even though it has long been proven that the virus can’t be transmitted through saliva. Thirty-five states have laws that criminalize various forms of HIV exposure, according to the CDC

“We have to follow science and that means eliminating laws that perpetuate discrimination, exacerbate disparities, discourage HIV testing and take us further away from our goal,” Biden said.

The Biden administration recently announced it will host the Global Fund to Fight AIDS replenishment conference next year. The United States has contributed about $17 billion to the fund, about a third of all donor contributions.

A giant red ribbon, a symbol of support for people living with HIV, was displayed on the North Portico of the White House to mark World AIDS Day. The two-story ribbon display has become an annual tradition at the White House since 2007.

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL'S MESSAGE ON WORLD AIDS DAY

Thirty-five years since the emergence of AIDS, the international community can look back with some pride but we must also look ahead with resolve and commitment to reach our goal of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

There has been real progress in tackling the disease. More people than ever are on treatment. Since 2010, the number of children infected through mother-to-child transmission has dropped by half. Fewer people die of AIDS-related causes each year. And people living with HIV are living longer lives.

The number of people with access to life-saving medicines has doubled over the past five years, now topping 18 million. With the right investments, the world can get on the fast-track to achieve our target of 30 million people on treatment by 2030. Access to HIV medicines to prevent mother-to-child transmission is now available to more than 75 percent of those in need.

While there is clear progress, gains remain fragile. Young women are especially vulnerable in countries with high HIV prevalence, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. Key populations continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV. New infections are on the rise among people who inject drugs as well gay men and other men who have sex with men. The AIDS epidemic is increasing in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, fuelled by stigma, discrimination and punitive laws. Globally, people who are economically disadvantaged lack access to services and care. Criminalization and discrimination foster new infections each day. Women and girls are still especially hard hit.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted with a promise to leave no one behind. Nowhere is this more important than in tackling AIDS. Supporting young, vulnerable and marginalized people will change the course of the epidemic. The UNAIDS strategic framework is aligned with the SDGs, which highlight how the work against HIV is linked to progress in education, peace, gender equality and human rights. I am proud to see how the United Nations and UNAIDS, under the leadership of Michel Sidibé, are committed to finding new and better approaches to end this epidemic.

During its first decade, affected groups refused to accept inaction, mediocrity and weakness in the AIDS response. Their courage drove progress on securing women and children's health, lowering the costs of lifesaving drugs and giving voice to the voiceless. We must all join together in that same uncompromising spirit. On World AIDS Day, I salute the tireless effort of leaders, civil society, colleagues in the UN and the private sector to advance this cause.

As I prepare to complete my tenure as Secretary-General, I issue a strong call to all: let us recommit, together, to realizing our vision of a world free of AIDS.

AIDS ribbon

World AIDS Day , annual observance aimed at raising awareness of the global epidemic of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) and the spread of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus ). World AIDS Day occurs on December 1 and was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1988 to facilitate the exchange of information among national and local governments, international organizations, and individuals. When the first World AIDS Day was held in 1988, an estimated 90,000 to 150,000 people were infected with HIV, which causes AIDS. Within two decades more than 33 million people were living with HIV infection, and since 1981, when the first AIDS case was reported, some 25 million people died of the disease. As a result, AIDS awareness became increasingly concerned with educating societies about HIV/AIDS through the unification and monetary support of international organizations.

A primary goal of World AIDS Day activities is the distribution of information. Each country creates and organizes its own agenda for World AIDS Day, and some countries launch weeklong campaigns. In addition, many countries and cities hold ceremonies that serve to commence World AIDS Day activities on international, national, and local levels. For example, in the United States the president delivers an annual proclamation, and in other countries, such as South Africa , Bermuda, and Brunei, ministers of health make annual speeches drawing attention to AIDS concerns. Typical World AIDS Day activities include concerts, rallies, memorials to those who have died from AIDS, discussions, and debates. A major international symbol of World AIDS Day is the red ribbon, worn as a demonstration of commitment to the fight against AIDS. In the United States a symbol commemorating those who have died of AIDS is the AIDS Memorial Quilt , sections of which are displayed in various cities and towns throughout the country on World AIDS Day.

WHO organized World AIDS Day, developing the annual themes and activities, until 1996, when these responsibilities were assumed by UNAIDS , the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. In 1997 UNAIDS created the World AIDS Campaign (WAC) to increase AIDS awareness and to integrate AIDS information on a global level. In 2005 the WAC became an independent body, functioning as a global AIDS advocacy movement, based in Cape Town , S.Af., and Amsterdam, Neth. In addition to ensuring the support of leaders and AIDS organizations, the WAC prepares information that is distributed for World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day’s first theme was “Communication.” For 2005 to 2010 the WAC fostered the theme “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise,” which the organization used not only on World AIDS Day but also throughout the year to raise awareness of AIDS.

UNIS/SGSM/1366 29 November 2023

The Secretary-General

Message for world aids day 2023, 1 december 2023.

World AIDS Day arrives at a defining moment.

AIDS-related deaths have fallen by almost 70 per cent since their peak in 2004, and new HIV infections are at the lowest point since the 1980s.

But AIDS still takes a life every minute.

We can — and must — end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

Reaching this goal means heeding this year’s theme: Let Communities Lead.

The path to ending AIDS runs through communities.

From connecting people to the treatment, services and support they need — to the grassroots activism pushing for action so all people can realize their right to health.

Supporting those on the frontlines of the battle against AIDS is how we win.

That means placing community leadership at the centre of HIV plans, programmes, budgets and monitoring efforts.

We must also remove barriers to community leadership, and ensure space for local civil society groups to take forward their vital work.

Above all, we need funding.

The AIDS response in low and middle-income countries needs over 8 billion dollars more per year to be fully funded.

This must include scaled-up funding for local programmes led by people living with HIV, and prevention initiatives led by communities.

AIDS is beatable.

Let’s finish the job by supporting communities to end this scourge in their neighbourhoods, their countries and around the world.

Your Excellency Dr. Isaura Ferrão Nyusi, Wife of the President of the Republic of Mozambique,

Excellency the Secretary of State of Gaza Province,

Presidente do Conselho Municipal da vila da Macia.

Dra. Idalina Libombo, CNCS Vice Executive Secretary)

Senhor(s) Director do Centro SEKELEKA.

Dear Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good morning.  I am deeply honored to be here with you to commemorate World AIDS Day, an important moment for us to remember the friends and loved ones we have lost to this disease, while also reflecting on the work needed to achieve an AIDS-free generation.

The United Nations, United States, and Mozambique all chose themes for this year’s World AIDS Day, which emphasizes the importance of providing HIV/AIDS services throughout society, equally, and equitably.

Your Excellency Dr. Isaura Ferrão Nyusi: Thank you for inviting me here today.  I thank you for your leadership and your personal commitment to helping Mozambique to control HIV by 2030.  The attention you bring to helping every Mozambican child to live happy, healthy, productive lives is the key to a bright future.

Mozambique has continuously made progress towards the UNAIDS’ 95-95-95 goal: that 95 percent of the people living with HIV know their HIV status; that 95 percent of those people are on treatment for HIV; and that 95 percent of them are virally suppressed and no longer spreading HIV.

While we should celebrate the advances in healthcare over the last 20 years, there is still much work to be done.  For example, today, more than 1.6 million Mozambicans are receiving antiretroviral medication, and everyone who tests positive is able to immediately begin treatment.  Nevertheless, there are still almost 40 percent of children living with HIV who are not receiving that life-saving treatment.  And more than 13 percent of HIV-positive mothers transmit the disease during childbirth.

We must continue our hard work in assuring access to treatment for every Mozambican, regardless of their family’s income, their gender, or the area in which they live.  This is especially true for children.

Through our longstanding partnership, and as the largest bilateral donor to Mozambique, the work of the United States and Mozambican governments allows us to continue advancing essential maternal and pediatric HIV services.  This includes testing and treatment for pregnant and breastfeeding women, preventive medication for exposed infants, timely testing, and immediate provision of care.

I’ve personally witnessed the commitment of the Mozambican government, health professionals, and community health workers, in providing family and client-centered care, which makes a difference in the lives of all Mozambicans, but especially children.  Despite the ongoing challenges, we have seen improvements in the quality of life for children living with HIV.  More of them are receiving the testing and effective treatment and better family support services.  These proven interventions need to continue to be scaled up.

It is equally important to address the social impact of HIV on orphans and vulnerable children. Estimates indicate that more than half of Mozambique’s 14 million children need some form of social support.  The needs range from medical care to education to family economic support.  This year alone, the United States Government is supporting social services to nearly 375,000 children who have been orphaned due to HIV and AIDS, with a special focus on supporting those children who are living with HIV.

Ladies and gentlemen, the world has lived with the HIV epidemic for the past 40 years. But in the face of such a momentous challenge, I am encouraged by the universal understanding that solidarity, unity, compassion, and hope are required ingredients to face this disease.

On behalf of the government of the United States of America, I recommit us to working side-by-side with our Mozambican partners to see the day in which:

  • All men and women are protected from HIV infection.
  • All children and adults living with HIV have access to life-saving antiretroviral treatment so they can lead healthy, productive lives;
  • The day in which no babies are born with HIV; and
  • The day in which we can claim that we have achieved an AIDS-free generation.

Juntos Podemos.

Thank you very much.

This freedom was achieved after countless movements such as the Civil Disobedience movement. The nation would not have attained independence, had it not been for notable freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal and many others.

Independence Day 2024 Speech in 500 Words

Respected guests, principal, teachers and my dear friends, we are gathered here today to celebrate the 78th Independence Day of our nation. India achieved independence on August 15, 1947. It was an extremely proud moment when the national flag was unfurled at the Red Fort by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. This momentous occasion marked the end of the British rule in India.

The British came to our nation, which was then known as, ‘Sone ki Chidiya’, for the purpose of trade. But they soon began taking advantage of the discords between people. The East India Company (EIC) took permission to carry out trade. The EIC gradually began expanding its operations and established factories in various parts of India.

The British were successful in driving out French, Dutch and Portuguese traders out of the country. It was the Battle of Plassey (1757) which marked the successful establishment of the British rule in India. The British made Mir Jafar the puppet Nawab of Bengal in exchange for the territory of 24 parganas.

The discriminatory policies of the British led to the Revolt of 1857. This event marked the first occasion of organised resistance against the EIC. The revolt was started by the sepoys of the EIC’s army and later spread to various cities. The revolt failed due to limited participation and lack of leadership.

After the revolt, power was transferred from the EIC to the crown. The path to independence from the British saw various movements such as the Non-cooperation movement, Khilafat movement, Civil Disobedience movement and the Quit India movement. Behind India’s independence lies the rebellions and movements carried out by many freedom fighters. These people fought with unwavering determination to achieve freedom for all.

Some of these brave freedom fighters were Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Rani Laxmi Bai, Mangal Pandey and countless others.

On the eve of India’s independence, Pandit Nehru gave the famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech. I would like to take this opportunity to quote some historic lines from the speech. Pandit Nehru said, ‘’Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.’’

Independence Day Speech for Students

Good morning to our esteemed guests, respected teachers, and dear friends,

Today, we gather to celebrate India's Independence Day. I am truly honored to share my thoughts on this special occasion. I am very grateful to my teacher for giving me this opportunity to speak on our country's Independence Day.

On this day, India gained freedom from British rule through peaceful and nonviolent movements. The British ruled over us for 200 years, coming to India for trade but instead exploiting our nation and its people. Our ancestors fought hard for many years before India achieved independence on August 15, 1947.

This day is a reminder of the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters who fought for our country's freedom. It is a day to honor those who gave their lives so India could become an independent nation. We must pledge to stay devoted and committed to our country today.

In closing, I pay my respects to those brave souls with a quote from Sarojini Naidu:

“A country’s greatness lies in its undying ideal of love and sacrifice that inspire the mothers of the race.”

Jai Hind, Jai Bharat.

Short and simple Independence Day Speech

Good morning to respected Sir/Madam and everyone present here,

Today, we come together to honour the bravery of our freedom fighters on Independence Day. This day is not just a date on the calendar; it symbolizes India’s courage, resilience, and unbreakable spirit.

Independence Day is celebrated on August 15 each year, marking the day India gained freedom from British rule through nonviolent protests and civil disobedience.

The struggle for independence began during World War I, led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

From 1857 to 1947, our history is filled with revolutions and the sacrifices of great leaders and freedom fighters.

The Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons on July 4, 1947, and was passed within two weeks, ending over 200 years of British rule on August 15, 1947.

This Bill led to the creation of India and Pakistan as separate nations.

August 15 reminds us of the immense sacrifices made by our freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Sekhar Azad, and many others, known and unknown, who fought to free India from British colonial rule.

Our freedom fighters dreamed of an independent India, and their dreams became a reality. Remember, never stop dreaming, as dreams are what keep us alive.

On this Independence Day, let us promise to protect our country by upholding unity, helping others, and continuing our education. I will conclude my speech with these lines:

"Freedom in mind, faith in words. Pride in our hearts, memories in our souls. Let’s salute the nation on Independence Day!"

Bharat Mata ki Jai. Vande Mataram. Jai Hind.

Independence Day Speech for Kids

Good morning and Happy Independence Day to my respected teachers and dear friends!

Today, we are celebrating our 78th Independence Day, and we should be very proud to be part of a free nation where we have the freedom to speak our minds and live our lives as we choose.

India was ruled by the British for nearly 200 years. Thanks to the brave efforts of our freedom fighters, we gained independence on August 15, 1947. On this special day, our national flag was raised at the Red Fort in Delhi by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Since then, we have celebrated Independence Day every year in schools, colleges, and government offices.

So, on this Independence Day, let’s promise ourselves to always protect our country by fostering friendship, helping others, and continuing our education.

Once again, I wish you all a Happy Independence Day. Let’s work together to build a wonderful nation!

Independence Day Speech in Hindi |

Independence Day Speech 2024

Good morning respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends,

Today, we have gathered here to celebrate a day of immense pride and joy for every Indian—our Independence Day. As we stand here on August 15th, 2024, we are reminded of the historic moment 77 years ago when India finally broke free from British rule and emerged as an independent nation.

Independence Day is not just a day to mark our freedom, but also a time to honor the sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters who fought tirelessly to secure this freedom for us. Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, and Jawaharlal Nehru dedicated their lives to the cause of our nation. They faced immense challenges and endured great hardships, but their unwavering determination and courage ultimately led to our independence on August 15, 1947.

This day is a powerful reminder of the importance of freedom and the responsibilities that come with it. As young citizens of India, it is our duty to uphold the values of democracy, equality, and justice that our nation is built upon. The freedom we enjoy today was not handed to us easily; it was earned through struggle and sacrifice. Therefore, we must cherish it and do everything we can to protect it.

Independence Day is also an opportunity for us to reflect on how far our country has come since 1947. From being a newly independent nation facing numerous challenges, India has grown into a global power with significant achievements in various fields such as science, technology, education, and sports. However, as we celebrate our progress, we must also recognize the work that still needs to be done.

As students, we play a crucial role in shaping the future of our nation. We must strive to excel in our studies, develop our skills, and contribute positively to society. Whether it’s through our academic achievements, our involvement in community service, or simply being responsible citizens, each of us has the power to make a difference.

On this Independence Day, let us pledge to be active participants in our country’s growth and development. Let us remember the sacrifices made by our forefathers and honor them by working towards making India a better place for all. We must also remember that true independence means freedom for everyone, regardless of their background, religion, or social status. It means working towards a nation where everyone has equal opportunities and rights.

As I conclude, I would like to say that Independence Day is not just a celebration of our past, but also a call to action for our future. Let us take this day as a reminder of our duties as citizens of this great nation and commit to doing our part in building a stronger, more prosperous, and united India.

Thank you, and Jai Hind!

Opening Speech at AIDS 2018

Good evening. Thank you for inviting me to participate in such an important international public health event, it’s a true honour. I would like to thank Linda-Gail (Bekker) and also Peter Reiss.

I would also like to thank the government of the Netherlands for its leadership in promoting human rights, reaching out to key populations and promoting health equity.

I also want to remember the colleagues we lost in the tragic MH17 crash four years ago, including one of our own WHO staff, Glenn Thomas. I honour Glenn’s memory, and the memory of all those who died.

As you may know, this is a landmark year for WHO. It’s our 70th birthday.

WHO was founded in 1948 on the conviction that health is a human right for all people, not a privilege for the few.

Today, that conviction remains central to everything we do. And you heard it from everybody before me. And it remains central to the fight against HIV.

Since the turn of the century, we’ve made incredible progress.

Together, we have turned the tide on HIV. We have transformed a death sentence into a treatable disease.

Millions of people are on treatment. Even better, millions of people are NOT on treatment because we gave them the tools to protect themselves.

We have accelerated research and development. We have pushed back the boundaries of science and are now in hot pursuit of a cure.

We’ve championed the rights of the most marginalized and vulnerable.

But we’re not done. The gains we have made are under threat, with signs of wavering political commitment and declining funding.

In May this year, the World Health Assembly approved a new 5-year strategy for WHO, to support countries on their journey towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

At its heart are what we call the “triple billion” targets for 2023:

1 billion more people benefitting from universal health coverage,

1 billion more people better protected from health emergencies;

and 1 billion more people enjoying better health and well-being.

We are now transforming WHO to become an Organization capable of delivering on these targets where it matters most – not in Geneva, but on the ground, in countries.

And around the world, we’re working with countries to strengthen their health systems and help them progress towards universal health coverage, so that all people have access to the services they need, without facing financial hardship.

But the reality is that more than half of the world’s population lacks access to essential health services, including vaccination, treatment for HIV, hepatitis and TB, family planning services, and the ability to see a health worker.

And every year, almost 100 million people are pushed into extreme poverty by the costs of paying for care out of their own pockets.

This outrage must end.

No one should get sick and die just because they’re poor or marginalized.

When Dorothy (Onyango) said that only three out of the 24 women survived, behind them it is poverty that killed them, it is lack of equity that killed them, it is lack of solidarity that killed them. We were late in saving them.

Many of those who are being left behind are those most affected by HIV, including people who use drugs, transgender people, sex workers, men who have sex with men and prisoners.

Our increasing focus on universal health coverage should not be seen as a threat to disease-specific programmes, such as HIV. Not at all.

In fact, it’s an opportunity to accelerate our efforts to eliminate AIDS and amplify the impact of investments in HIV.

Because we have not truly helped a child if we treat her for HIV, but do not vaccinate the same child against measles.

We have not truly helped a gay man if we give him PrEP but leave his depression untreated.

We have not truly helped a sex worker if we give her STI screening but not cancer screening.

We have not truly helped a community if we give them condoms, but not smoking cessation services.

Universal health coverage means ALL people have access to ALL the services they need, for ALL diseases and conditions.

And I’m part of you. I have participated in many of these meetings. You have shown what is possible when energy, passion and resources are mobilized to address a devastating disease. You are the best. You are the model.

I now call on you to harness that same energy and passion, and those same resources, to achieve universal health coverage.

That’s how we will defeat AIDS and build a healthier, safer, fairer world for everyone, everywhere. And I hope you are with me. Are you ready for the challenges? Are you with me? Are we going to do this together?
