IELTS Global Warming Essay - Model Answer

Probably the most worrying threat to our planet at the present time is global warming. This essay will examine the reasons why global warming is occurring and discuss some possible solutions.

The predominant factors resulting in the warming of the earth are the emissions of CO2 and deforestation. CO2, which damages the ozone layer, comes from several sources, but the most problematic are those coming from the burning of fossil fuels from power plants. This releases thousands of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. Another cause of these emissions is the burning of gasoline for transportation, which continues to grow because of our demand for cars and also our increasing worldwide consumption, resulting in an escalating need to transport goods. Also, forests store large amounts of carbon, so deforestation is causing larger amounts of CO2 to remain in the atmosphere.

Nevertheless, there are potential ways to solve these problems, or at least reduce the effects. Firstly, governments need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and promote alternatives. Plant-derived plastics, biodiesel, wind power and solar power are all things that are a step in the right direction, but governments need to enforce the limits on CO2 emissions for the polluting industries in their countries for these to be effective. Also, individuals can play a part by making lifestyle changes. People should try to buy cars with the best fuel economy, and only use their car when really necessary. They can also switch to energy companies that use renewable energy rather than fossil fuels. Finally, small things like buying energy efficient light bulbs, turning off electricity in the house, and planting trees in the garden can help.

To conclude, although global warming is a serious issue, there are steps that governments and individuals can take to reduce its effects. If we are to save our planet, it is important that this is treated as a priority for all concerned.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Analysis (Global Warming) – Band 7

Let us find out what band score a candidate deserves by doing complete analysis of his IELTS writing task 2 below.

Global warming is increasing day by day. What are the causes of global warming and what can be done to eradicate this global problem.

Candidate’s Response:

Nowadays, existance of human being is threatened by a serious environmental cause know as global warming. The causes of global warming are multifactorial, thus needs a systematic approach from government organizations and individuals to tackle the issue.

To begin with, the important causes of current globalwarming are, firstly, the industrial revolution in the modern times has led to an increased release of gases into the atmosphere like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, to name a few, these gases are known to increase the temperature of the atmosphere by trapping ultraviolet rays into the earth’s atmosphere. Moreoover, population explosion has resulted in excessive dependence on fossil fuels for cars, public transport and railways, these machines emit a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

In addition, deforestation done by the humans for their habitat and agriculture has resulted in huge loss of trees who are the cleaners of combustion gases from the atmosphere. Furthermore, ozone layer is depleted from many parts of earth, thus allowing harmful rays of sun to enter the earth’s surface. The measures that government needs to take to solve or to reduce the global warming are, first of all, conserving the forest area by implementing strict norms and encouraging to plant more tree in the cities. Secondly, release of gases from industries should be reduced by instaling pollution control filters. Thirdly, discouraging use of fossil fuels for vehicles and promoting usage of renewable source of energy such as solar energy, tidal power and wind power.

To conclude, global warming is a very serious issue, which needs to be addressed at the priority. The government and all the individuals should join hands to reduce this eminent threat and save earth and future generations.

Paragraph 2 : (solution statements ) Fortunately, there are several measures that could be implemented to mitigate the problems arising from global warming.

Overall summary of your answers

Global warming is a universal concern that has gained worldwide attention. A number of causes have led to this life-threatening phenomenon, the most conspicuous among them being human activities. This problem can be controlled to a certain extent by implementing certain environment-friendly practices.

The main causes of global warming are man-made. First, it is due to greenhouse gases often produced by power plants. When coal is burnt to make electricity, it releases a large amount of CO2 into the atmosphere. The second greatest source of carbon dioxide emissions comes from the petrol burning in motor vehicles which have led to increased toxicity and pollution of the atmosphere. Another reason is deforestation for farmland, wood and paper that contributes to higher temperatures which lead to the melting of polar ice caps and the rising of sea levels.

Fortunately, there are several measures that could be implemented to mitigate the problems arising from global warming. Firstly, the government should encourage power stations and plants to use more environmentally-friendly sources of energy such as renewable energy instead of fossil fuels. Secondly, raising social awareness of environmental protection should be high on the agenda. For instance, television programmes could be used to incentivize people to participate in environmental protection campaigns. Further, the governments of each country should implement stringent laws and rules to control the exploitation of resources and pollution of the environment by various organizations or common people.

In a nutshell, it is clear that there are various reasons for global warming, and steps need to be taken to tackle this problem.

Environmental issues are increasingly burgeoning worldwide, and one of the most pressing problems is global warming which has become humanity’s greatest threat. This phenomenon has several causes, and human actions are the most obvious cause. However, these problems can be tackled by following specific measures. Therefore, the following essay will discuss the causes and possible solutions.

Without a doubt, global warming has a number of negative implications, and the primary causes of this phenomenon are man-made due to their inadequate knowledge and reckless exploitation of natural resources. Firstly, the excessive consumption of fossil fuels that are burnt to produce electricity and run cars results in the release of CO₂ into the atmosphere. Secondly, increased emissions of green house gases have occurred from deforestation and the release of industrial pollutants into the atmosphere. Thirdly, the significant cause behind global warming is the increase in the population resulting in air pollution. As a result, global warming has a higher impact on human health than it does on the environment, water resources, regional sea-level rise, agriculture, natural vegetation, etc.

Global warming can not be blamed on humanity. But it can be addressed and prevented from worsening through human efforts. The state government and world leaders should design and execute concrete plans and programmes to ensure that the environment is not harmed further. The government should implement severe orders requiring industries, power plants, and power stations to use ecologically beneficial practices instead of fossil fuels. Similarly, instead of running gasoline-powered vehicles, consumers can switch to electric and hybrid vehicles, which will reduce pollution and congestion. Since students are future citizens, they should be taught about afforestation, planting saplings, using public transport, and minimising plastics. Even the elders can watch environmental TV shows to engage themselves in environmental conservation campaigns.

To sum up, there are a number of factors that contribute to global warming, some of them are under human control. Although t aking efforts to mitigate global warming may appear challenging at first, it is not impossible. Global warming can be controlled with concerted efforts, in which individuals and governments can team up and take appropriate efforts to attain it. Every small step counts and makes a difference in the fight against global warming.

Band 6+: Global warming is one of the most severe issues that the world is facing today. What causes global warming, and what can government and individuals take to tackle these issues?

In this modern era, global warming has become a significant issue ubiquitous across the globe and there are some causes like, greenhouse gas emission, deforestation and industrial processes has made it a bit of problem. However, government and individual can take some measurements to overcome from this situation. My ideas for this will be explained in forthcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, greenhouse gas emission is one of the major reasons behind global warming in which the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) for energy and transportation releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) into the atmosphere that can cause a big damp in ozone layer. Moreover, deforestation is also a key figure behind the rise of global warming. In simple words, trees absorb CO2, so deforestation for agriculture, urban development, or logging reduces this natural carbon sink and increase the amount of carbon dioxide present on air. For example, a survey was conducted in Delhi which estimated that quality of air in urban area decreased after removing 2500 trees for urbanization.

However, there are some measurements that can be helpful for controlling the global warming which can be taken by governments and individuals. Firstly, governments should invest in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power to reduce reliance on fossil fuels which can recover the damp of ozone layer and did not affect the quality of air. Secondly, individuals can use public transport as their primary means of transportation. Opting for public transport, cycling, or walking instead of driving can reduce individual emissions.

In conclusion, tackling global warming requires coordinated efforts from both governments and individuals. By understanding its causes and implementing effective strategies, we can work together to mitigate its effects and protect our planet for future generations.

Climate change IELTS essay model answer

How can you get a high band score in lexical resource in IELTS writing task 2?

If you need a high band score in IELTS writing, then you first need to understand how IELTS examiners grade this part of the IELTS test .

IELTS examiners do not give you one grade, they give you four grades that you do not see and these are added together to create an overall band score in IELTS Writing.

The four areas that they grade you on are:

  • Task achievement
  • Cohesion and coherence
  • Lexical resource
  • Grammatical range and accuracy

In this article I will look at :

  • What is lexical resource?
  • What can you do to improve your band score in this area?

As lexical resource is 25% of the overall score, it is very important that you choose your vocabulary carefully. Many IELTS candidates focus on answering the question and do not pay enough attention to the vocabulary and then get 5.0 for Lexical Resource and this lowers their overall band score.

To get a 6.0 or above in Lexical Resource, IELTS examiners are looking for use of a range of less common words and phrases.

Let’s see how you can do this with an IELTS essay about global warming – a popular IELTS Writing topic!

First of all, before focusing on the vocabulary, you must read and understand the question…

It is the job of governments and companies to deal with the huge environmental problems which we face. Individuals on their own can do little or nothing’. What is your opinion about this statement?

In this question, you need to focus on governments, companies and individuals so the best way to write your answer would be using separate paragraphs for each group. The essay below is divided into three main topic paragraphs; however, you will see that I bring ‘individuals’ into each paragraph to say how they can help the situation.

Ok, so now you understand the question, before writing the essay, it is ESSENTIAL that you note down some complex words/phrases that you could use in your answer. If you do not do this, you will probably not think of using them in the answer and then you get a low Lexical Resource score.

What vocabulary could you use to improve your lexical resource band score in this task?

Take a look through the climate change essay below and you can see that all the words underlined are connected to climate change.

They are words/phrases that would show the IELTS examiner that you can use a range of less common words and complex language.

In addition, there are examples of collocations – these are words that go together and are used naturally by native speakers, but are often not widely known by non-native speakers. These can impress the examiner.

Here are some examples of collocations I have used in this essay:

  • To tackle climate change = to deal with climate change
  • A pressing problem = a problem that needs dealing with urgently
  • A moral responsibility = a duty to behave in a way that is right
  • The key players = the most important people

It cannot be disputed that the world is experiencing an environmental crisis . According to recent research, if nothing is done to tackle climate change in the near future, our planet will face the devastating consequences of global warming . Undoubtedly, it is the role of governments and corporate organisations to take action, however I strongly feel that individuals need to make a contribution to deal with this pressing problem as well.

Politicians could certainly invest public finances in order to research the issues connected with climate change and, furthermore, could pass laws in relation to industrial pollution , which is making a major contribution to the greenhouse effect . Nevertheless, it requires constant pressure from citizens, either alone or in environmental pressure groups, on our leaders to make this happen. The general public can protest, lobby their politicians or vote for a political party who proposes introducing green policies if elected.

Similarly, corporate businesses should be adopting more sustainable working practices , for instance, by switching to more environmentally-friendly ways of manufacturing using renewable energy such as solar panels . Likewise, the individual as consumer can play a role here too, by refusing to purchase products which have been manufactured in a way that damages the environment.

It must also be acknowledged that individuals have a moral responsibility to care for our planet . For example, reducing consumption of fossil fuels whenever possible, becoming self-sufficient by growing their own vegetables and switching off lights when they are not needed. Although some of these actions may seem minor, the cumulative effect of everyone taking such actions would be enormous.

It is probably certainly the case that governments and international companies are the key players with responsibility for protecting our planet . Nonetheless, I am still convinced that ordinary people, either individually or cooperatively, can help to make the changes necessary to have a significant impact on our future.

As previously mentioned, the environment is a frequently used topic in both IELTS Speaking and Writing so if you need a high band score in IELTS, write a practice essay on this topic now.

Global warming essay

This global warming IELTS essay lesson is mostly about the need to vary your vocabulary when you write. This means thinking about the topic of the question of course but also thinking about what the question asks you to do – i.e. talk about causes etc.

Read and understand the question – structuring the essay

Research shows that global warming is caused by human activity. What are the possible effects of climate change and what can governments and individuals do to reduce these?

This is a two part question. To answer it, you must write about both

the causes of climate change

what can be done about it by both governments and individuals

The sensible approach is to use separate paragraphs for each point. My essay below is divided into two main topic paragraphs. You could use three if you wanted to write a separate paragraph for government and individual actions.

Choosing the language

You should see that you need this language for the essay:

  • climate change vocabulary

cause and effect vocabulary

suggestion vocabulary

My suggestion is that you do not start writing too quickly but plan and think about what words you need to use.

Cause and effect vocabulary .

This is key area of language and you want to vary the word “effects” in the question. Look at the red words below to see how I do this. You will find a lot more words on my lesson cause and effect vocabulary.

  • cause and effect

Climate change vocabulary.

This is the topic vocabulary of the essay. If you need more, take a look at my vocabulary lesson on this:

Suggestion language .

Don’t forget this. You have options here too. The mistake is to go “must” “must” “must”. English had lots of words for this. Think of

There is now little doubt that global warming and climate change are the result of human activity. This has happened because of a failure in environmental policy by governments and a lack of concern for wasted energy by individuals.

It is almost universally accepted that climate change is the consequence of a number of environmental failings. Perhaps the most important of these is how fossil fuels such as gas and coal are still the main source of power. This is a problem because their use means that a large amount of CO2 is released into the atmosphere causing the greenhouse effect. Another serious issue is how illegal logging continues in rainforests and the Amazon Basin in particular. It should also not be forgotten that there is a connection between global warming and the inefficient use of energy by consumers in the home.

While governments must take prime responsibility for reducing climate change, individuals too can play a part. Political leaders across the globe need to cooperate so that research into renewable forms of energy such as wind and solar power is properly funded and the use of coal and gas in power stations is phased out.

They must also of course ensure that regulations against logging are properly enforced. Consumers of energy can help by insulating their homes properly and using solar panels where possible so that less energy is required and wasted. These actions should limit the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and so reduce the greenhouse effect.

In conclusion, while global warming is a serious threat to humanity, there are a number of steps that can be taken to reduce its effects.

IELTS Task 2 Writing

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

As certain regions of the world become increasingly warmer, people are forced to find alternative solutions for places to live. Discuss the causes and consequences of this change. Include explanations and examples for your arguments.

Write at least 250 words.

As some parts of the planet continue to experience higher temperatures, citizens must find different opportunities for survival. Discuss the reasons and outcomes of this change. Support your position with explanations and real instances.

TOPIC = global warming affecting human habitat

Controlling Idea = reasons for this and the consequences

*Apply critical thinking (questions: what, why and how)

What does it mean that global warming is affecting human habitat?

Some places, especially equatorial climate zones are becoming too hot, 45 degrees plus, and people are forced to move to cooler, more northern and southern climates.

Why are people forced to change their habitat due to increasing temperatures?

People are having difficulty being productive and staying healthy in places where there are extremely high temperatures. They are forced into air-conditioned environments to avoid heatstroke and sunstroke.

How does this happen? (Think about a real-world example)

Abdullah in Abud Abi is experiencing 55 degree temperatures. He feels that he is going to faint from heat stroke and decides to move to Toronto Canada.

———————-

What are the reasons for global warming forcing people to move?

Increasing greenhouse gases, CO2, and deforestation, as well as the natural change of surface temperatures as the earth changes its position in relation to the sun is increasing temperatures by more than one degree each year.

What are the consequences of people moving from very hot to cooler areas?

Increasing population density in certain regions, soaring real estate prices, increasing human competition for survival and conflict. Decreasing development in hot regions of the world. Potentially increase in illness in hot zones.

Introductory Paragraph

Global warming is forcing unprecedented migration of humans these days.

(Hook – introduces the topic, short, interesting) Global warming is forcing a major shift in the habitats of billions of human lives.  (Background – definition and importance) Some places, especially equatorial climate zones, are becoming too hot, 45 degrees plus, and people are forced to move to cooler, more northern and southern climates. Individuals have difficulty being productive and staying healthy in places of extremely high temperatures; they are forced into air-conditioned environments to avoid heatstroke and sunstroke. (Thesis, causes and consequences) Both human activity and natural change is causing this phenomenon and the consequences are increasing competition and conflict.

BODY 1 – (Topic sentence which further defines point 1 in the thesis)

Both the shift in the earths relative position to the sun as well as the rapid industrial evolution of humans are lending way to increasing surface temperatures. (Explanation – real world, quantitative, logical, directly flowing from your topic sentence.) Over the past couple of centuries, the earth has shifted both on its axis as well as distance to the sun which has resulted in temperature increase. This has been accelerated by automation and factories which create pollution that results in a greenhouse effect; further increasing the temperature on earth. (Example – specific and real world). In Saudi Arabia, the average temperature over the course of the past decade has increased by one degree Celsius annually, and now summer highs can reach over 50 degrees forcing many citizens to find other places to migrate to. Clearly, the exodus of millions of people to other parts of the world has major social and political impact.

As population densities and the demand for survival increase in limited areas of the world, so too does economic and physical conflict among individuals. Millions of people are seeking better lives in North and South America, as well as Europe and Asia where weather patterns can sustain human life. As a result, real estate prices are skyrocketing and nationalist sentiments are flaring. Cooler cities in Canada, like Victoria and Vancouver, have experienced a population boom of 50% over the past decade and this has resulted in average house prices being over a million dollars.

Conclusion (Point restated + argument strengthened + take-home-message)

In conclusion, both human use of resources and natural cosmic changes result in increasing temperatures on earth, and this has negative consequences for people’s lives. Namely, people are becoming more competitive and fighting for survival. Certainly, humanity as a whole must rapidly evolve socially and technologically in order to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Ielts reading passage –  global warming cause, effect and solution essay.

cause of global warming ielts essay

Global Warming Cause, Effect And Solution Essay

In simple words, global warming is changing the surface temperature in a way that affects the existence or survival of living beings and natural cycles. In detail, global warming is the gradual and restrained increase in the surface temperature of the earth and its atmosphere generally characterized by the greenhouse effects causing the rise in levels of chloro-fluorocarbons (CFCs), carbon dioxide and various pollutants. It is a phenomenon that modifies the natural cycle on earth and creates weather imbalances and ecosystems in the long run.

Despite the greenhouse effect being a natural phenomenon, human activities on earth create the restrained rise. Deforestation is a major cause of global warming as the forests play a vital role in maintaining the natural environment on earth. Fossil fuels and mining have also caused global warming as they don’t have a finished process of settling down the destroyed mines after obtaining fossil fuels. Intensive farming affects the actual state of soil and hampers earth and human lives too. Lack of proper waste management and overconsumption of non-biodegradable goods are causing global warming the most.

Further, those issues affect biodiversity on earth and hamper the natural habitat of various livestock. The floras and faunas cannot have a suitable environment to live in and the rise in temperature affects human lives too. Oceans are also most affected by global warming as they face acidification. The acid rain causes great harm to monuments and ancient sculptures to the cultural heritages too. Weather and seasons are not as timely as the biological eco cycle on earth are being affected due to global warming. So, climatic imbalances, oceanic traumas, and loss of biodiversity affect human life.

To cut these causes and avoid the effects of global warming,  we must encourage the use of renewable resources on earth. The alternative has to be set for the use of fossil fuels and renewable energy must get a priority. The motivation factor should act upon the use of sustainable transportation and environment-friendly generations to eliminate pollution on land, water, and air. This helps to promote the natural environment with no effects on environmental composition. We must promote the formula of R (Reduce, reuse, recycle)  in daily life, and with no underestimation of water efficiency as it is a perpetual resource on earth. Besides, an introduction of organic farming is beneficial to producers as well as consumers, and agricultural management should be a matter of concern for everyone.

Brainstorming Ideas

Refer to the following brainstorming ideas to get a better understanding of the answer.

Reasons for global warming is the most pressing issue:

  • The impact of the emission of greenhouse gases is extensive and potentially irreversible.
  • Rising sea levels, extreme weather events, loss of biodiversity and forest fires.

Reasons for deforestation being the most pressing issue:

  • It causes Soil erosion, loss of habitat for millions of species, and disruption of water cycles.

Q. Some people believe that global warming is today’s most pressing environmental problem. At the same time, some consider deforestation to have the most devastating impact on the world. Discuss both views and give your opinion on the same. You should write at least 250 words for this task.

Ans . Today’s environment is grappling with various challenges, with global warming and deforestation being two of the most pressing issues. While some individuals argue that global warming is the most critical environmental problem, others believe deforestation has a more devastating impact on the world. In my opinion, global warming is the most pressing environmental issue due to its urgency and potential for catastrophic impacts.

On one hand, global warming, characterised by the gradual rise in the Earth’s average temperature, is an urgent environmental concern. Its primary cause lies in the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, largely stemming from human activities such as burning fossil fuels. Its impacts are extensive and potentially irreversible. Rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and loss of biodiversity are among its dire consequences. Moreover, global warming exacerbates other environmental issues; for instance, the heightened frequency and severity of wildfires, such as those witnessed in Australia and California, can be directly attributed to this phenomenon. These fires not only devastate forested areas but also contribute to the release of stored carbon dioxide, perpetuating the cycle of warming.

On the other hand, deforestation, characterised by the large-scale removal of forests, is often viewed as having the most destructive impact on the planet. It serves as the root cause of soil erosion, loss of habitat for millions of species, and disruption of water cycles. For instance, the Amazon rainforest, often referred to as the ‘lungs of the Earth,’ is rapidly shrinking due to deforestation, leading to the loss of biodiversity and disruption in the global carbon cycle. Additionally, forests play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide, which would otherwise remain in the atmosphere. Therefore, their destruction exacerbates the problem of global warming.

In conclusion, both global warming and deforestation are significant environmental issues that require urgent action. However, given the widespread and profound impacts of global warming, it is, in my view, the most pressing environmental problem being faced today.
