IELTS Writing Task 2 : Smoking
Topic: smoking.
Despite health warnings, a large number of people continue to smoke all over the world. Why should we be concerned about this? What solutions would you suggest?
Give reason for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write at least 250 words.
Model Answer 01
Smoking is an expensive habit which pollutes the environment and carries serious health risk, yet a third of the men in the world smoke. It is also a sad fact that one in five teenagers take up the habit when they are as young as 11. Of course, there is one interest group, the tobacco industry, which is more than happy with this situation, since its profits depend on our addiction to cigarettes.
These statistics are particularly depressing because the link between smoking and cancer, heart disease and other serious illnesses has been known for many years. We must also remember that apart from harming the individual, smoking represents a huge cost to society. The money we spend on treating smoking-related disease could be used for much better purposes, such as helping to feed the world’s poor or paying for medical research.
So why, despite all the evidence, do people still smoke? The obvious answer is that cigarettes are highly addictive, so that it can be extremely difficult to give up. Another answer is the power of peer pressure, especially amongst young people. In my view, the most important thing is to discourage people from starting to smoke, and we could do this be increasing the tax on tobacco and banning cigarette advertising. I also feel that people who want to quit should be given as much advice and support as possible.
In conclusion, I believe that we should do everything we can to reduce the number of smokers in society. However, it is not enough to provide information about health risks, we also need to use a variety of strategies to tackle the problem.

Model Answer 02
Nowadays, many people become smoke addicts. The reasons for smoking vary from being a “fashionable” habit to conforming to your friends. Sometimes, parents set a bad example to their own children and are unable to quit smoking themselves. But governments and non-governmental organisations should unite powers and help addicts smoke less.
Smoking increases the risk of cancer, damages the foetus of pregnant women, makes teeth become yellow and rises the risk of impotence among men. What is more, smoking is extremely dangerous and unhealthy for surrounding people who inevitably breathe the cigarette smoke. Children and teenagers are often curious. They witness their own parents or teachers smoke and want to try it for themselves. The image of a woman smoking a cigarette in movies which is represented as being attractive is stuck in many girls’ minds. Thus, adolescents expose themselves to all the risks smoking brings.
Increasing prices of cigarettes and cigars is the first step for a healthier generation. Less people will be able to afford keeping their bad habit. Moreover, governments should ban smoking in public places. Tighter control should be forced on tobacco retailers. It is not surprising that cigarettes are being sold to children without any scruples. Retailers chase higher profits and are ignorant about the age of their customers. I think, pregnant women should also be banned from buying cigarettes since their children suffer from the devastating effects of tobacco smoke and often become addicts when they grow up in the future. Smoking does not has to necessarily be made illegal as many people who are already addicted would be at a disadvantage, but smoking should be turned into a luxurious choice for those who have the money and lungs to afford it.
In conclusion, I strongly support the idea of tighter control over society which would lead to a drop into the number of avid smokers. Everyone should have the freedom to smoke as long as they do not harm those around them, especially their own children.

Cigarette smoking is one of the major concerns in most of the countries. Despite knowing the consequences, people are still addicted to this habit.
Every year million of dollars is spent on medical expenditure to cure diseases occurred due to cigarette smoking. The government spends a large portion of money on the advertisements to stop people from smoking cigarette. This money could be better used on food and other important activities. Smoking not only affects the active smokers, but also the passive smokers. It is said that passive smokers get more affected by the cigarette smoke. Every third person is found to be a smoker and every fifth teenager up the age of eleven get into this habit, which is, a serious concern in many countries.
To overcome this issue, various measures can be taken. Firstly, advertisements on cigarettes should be banned and more advertisements on the harmful effects of the cigarette should be shown on the televisions. Secondly, a zero-tolerance ban on cigarette smoking should be imposed in public places. This will be a great relief for passive smokers. Thirdly, special awareness classes for all the students in the school to make them aware about its consequences. Finally, a high taxes should be imposed on all tobacco products. The high prices of tobacco will help to some extent to reduce the consumption of it.
In conclusion, a big effort should come from the government and the society to overcome this serious issue, but, the main effort should come from the people who are cigarette smokers. Especially those who want to leave this dangerous habit.

The damage of tobacco has almost known clearly through media, and internet. It pollutes the environment and carious serious healthy for not only smokers but also non-smokers. It is also a sad fact one in five teenagers take up the habit when they are as young as 11. Unfortunately, there is one interest group, the tobacco business, which is more than happy with our addiction to cigarettes which bring many profits for them. Date to date, researchers and organizations who usually give evidence damage of tobacco, which noticed that have linking between smoking and cancer, heart disease and other serious illnesses, and especially for non-smokers who called with a name on passive-smoking. One particular example for this situation: the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) release a long-awaited report on passive smoking, they resulted that Passive smoking causes 3000 deaths a year from lung cancer in the US alone. Moreover, smoking is an expensive habit, its representative huge cost for society. Government and individual have to paid for buying cigarette and treating smoking-diseases, this money may be used for better purposes such as: paying for adapt climate change methods research, helping to feed the world’s poor people. However, following give-up smokers quantity statistics in many years, they resulted that is not decrease much lower than our expectance and especially, almost people in 11-19 years old who cannot give up. The obvious answer is that cigarettes are highly addictive, so that it extremely difficult to live without them. I also absolutely agree with Vietnam government on increasing tobacco’s tax, banning cigarette advertising, forbidding smoke in public area, organizing damage of tobacco communications. If people want to quit smoke, they need to have patience, determination and their family’s support and encouragement. We live on modern society with many new dangerous ills and serious pollution environment. Solving the damage of tobacco is not only responsible of government but also individual. These actions bring fresh and bright home for our children’s children.

To live longer, one has to be healthy and to be healthy you have to chose the right healthy life style that will not only make live longer but also live happier. Smoking is one of the most devastating problems we now face in our modern societies. What helps in this is the it is mostly available for everyone, even teens under 18. This is not only the reason, also because there is less care from the parents.
Some of the parents themselves smoke due to life pressures and responsibilities,as a result children mainly try to copy their parents.I also believe that governments should try to increase health awarance, not especially by advicing and persuading their citizens not to smoke or by mentioning to them the disadvantages of smoking. They may just place high taxes on ciggerates and therefore force people to either pay more or buy less, that would undoubtedly make some people to cut-back on ciggerets.
The government should also inform people that the high taxes to make up for the damages they make, for instance pollution, the person who smokes doesnt only ruin or damage his lungs but also affect the people surrounded by him. The fume the other person inhales can defintely have a really bad effect on his lungs.
To sum up this , i strongly believe that people should take care of their health and understand the consequences of smoking, and put in their considerations that it doesn’t only hurt the smoker but also the surronders in general. So it is better to stop smoking to live a healthy longer life.

Despite health warnings, a large number of people continue to smoke all over the world. Why should we be concerned about this? What solutions would you suggest? Give reason for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
It is sad, yet undeniably true, that millions -no billions- of people worldwide continue to smoke although the precautions of health damage is crystally clear shown on each packet’s cover. Unfortunately, most smokers are completely aware of the hazardous effects smoking bring to their health yet it is considered a ‘mission impossible’ to quit this shameful habit. The answer lies in one word- addiction!
It is well know that the mortality rate is skyrocketing every year as a result of larger number of people smoking. One of the most prominent reasons why this is considered a major threat is because the GDP of our country is more likely to decline. In detail, when a person inhales the toxic fumes of a cigarette, fatal substances like nicotine and tar can lead to high blood pressure and lung cancer, respectively. Consequently, physical, mental and behavioral health will be aberrated , unlike a normal person. Sadly, employees and workers will not be as productive as they were.
Moreover, these health problems indeed require medical treatments for cure which is in most situations very expensive in extreme cases. This amount of money would have been used in better investments such as clothing and sheltering the poor individuals. Also, smokers have a higher chance to face death as the cardiovascular diseases caused by smoking in the number one death contributor in our country. Not only will this negatively affect a family by facing depression issues, but it will also cause valuable souls with talents needed by society to be lost.
All in all, I believe that the government should lend a helping hand and aid our nation to quit smoking by putting a “no smoking” sign in all the indoor regions aw well as the places which are mostly crowded with people. I have an unwavering faith that on the long run when hazards of smoking begin to arise in a body, smokers will realize how much damage they did to their selves which will make them raise awareness to their children and grandchildren when growing up to never start smokin

Smoking is a major cause of illness and death throughout the world today. In the interest of public health, governments should ban cigarettes and other tobacco products. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Model Answer:
Millions of people around the world have enjoyed smoking as an avenue for seeking relaxation and pleasure. However, smoking often triggers a wide array of illnesses or even death. It has been argued that in order to promote public health, government should totally disallow cigarettes and other tobacco products. I completely agree with this view.
Firstly, smoking is detrimental to physical and mental health. Apart from inducing short-term relaxation benefits, smoking causes many negative consequences. Smokers tend to get sick more easily than non-smokers. Based on this conjecture, governments would incur a large amount of expenses for subsidising the failing health of smokers. With a ban in place, the general population will get healthier and more productive at work.
Secondly, although I can understand why some people oppose the total ban of cigarettes, I do not find those reasons satisfying. For instance, some may argue that the decision to smoke is a form of human right. People should have the free-will to choose whether they want to smoke or not. I find this view very selfish since the health of many non-smokers are affected when they breath in the fumes of nicotine unintentionally. Furthermore, from the monetary viewpoint, some would argue that government could lose tax revenue from the sales of smoking related products. Again, this is myopic since government could actually saves money in the long-term due to lesser expenditure for healthcare subsidies.
In my opinion, the benefits of banning smoking outweigh the costs. For this reason, government should consider the necessary laws to bring this into effects.
