Army installations leave a lot to be desired – Fort Irwin, we’re looking at you. But, if you’re one of the lucky ones to get a great assignment to one of these posts, consider yourself entirely blessed. Check out this video for a visual overview of the Army’s best installations !

Schofield barracks.

This Army post is nestled in gorgeous Hawaii, so it’s hard not to love. No need to bring any of your cold-weather gear, but make sure you stock up on your sunscreen! Also, make sure you have plenty of beachwear on the ready because you’re going to be having so much fun in the sun! There are beaches, volcanoes, and lots of tourist sites nearby. Plus, it’s Hawaii, so the weather is great year-round. And, since this counts as an OCONUS PCS, you’ll have a COLA to look forward to, plus plenty of other perks.

Schofield Barracks is home to the 25 th Infantry Division and is located a few miles from the towns of Wahiawa and Mililani. Even better, nearby Honolulu is just 17 miles away! Schofield has been around since 1908 so there’s plenty of history embedded on the installation.

Yongsan Garrison

The Yongsan Army post in Seoul, South Korea proper. It’s generally referred to as USFK – United States Forces Korea. Even if your Korean is a little rusty, a PCS to Yongsan translates to lots of fun! It’s located in the heart of Seoul, a city of nearly 17 million people. Making it even more exciting is that Seoul is a great mix of modern and traditional. The city also has an extensive history of reconstruction, so there’s so much history to be uncovered. This installation dates back to the Japanese occupation of Korea and some of the original buildings are still in use! Making it even more of a paradox is that Yongsan boats some of the most modern facilities in the military.

Like other OCONUS postings, service members and their families aren’t required to obtain passports for entrance because of a Status of Forces Agreement . That means there’s one less thing to do on your PCS list!  

The central location of the base makes it a great jumping-off point to explore other parts of South Korea and the rest of the world in that region.

Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson

Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson is inside of Anchorage, Alaska. Don’t let the location scare you! While it is cold there, it’s a beautiful place to be with so many outdoor activities to enjoy. And since it’s a joint base, you get access to the Air Force’s Base Exchange. The facilities were officially combined in 2005 during the Base Closure and Realignment Commission. Then in 2010, the 673 rd Air Base Wing was activated as the host wing, combining the Air Force’s 3 rd Wing and the Army’s Garrison Fort Richardson.

Nearby Anchorage is a lively city with plenty of entertainment and other fun things to do. In the summer, expect around 19 hours of light per day, another cool aspect of getting stationed on this post. Be sure to bring your blackout shades so you get the shut-eye you need!

Fort Carson

Fort Carson is near Colorado Springs in the Rocky Mountains. This famed Army installation was established after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. At Ft. Carson, you can check out the 4 th Infantry Museum. Don’t skimp on exploring the beautiful surrounding area, too!

Colorado Springs is the second-largest city in Colorado, which means lots of fun stuff to do in terms of entertainment. Being so close to the mountains makes for some beautiful views 24/7. There’s an abundance of outdoor activities nearby, like hiking, fishing, and hunting. On top of all that, Denver is only 45 minutes away, a great perk for those interested in attending major sporting events.

ANYWHERE in Germany

Any Army post in Germany is an awesome place to get stationed. From Grafenwoehr to Kaiserslautern , Germany offers something for everyone! There’s so much history to take in, castles and fests to visit, and great food to try. But the best part of this station is its proximity to other countries. Hello, four-day trips! Germany makes it so super easy to visit a ton of other countries. Do your planning and make your lists so you don’t miss out on all the richness this area has to offer! It is so easy to jump on a train and head over to France, Switzerland, or other nearby countries. The opportunity to visit so many different cultures makes Army duty stations in Germany among the best in the world.

So, if you’re next home is on this list, count your blessings and maybe go play the lottery! You’re going to have a magnificent time abroad. If you’re heading OCONUS, you’ll learn so much about yourself and about a new culture. And if you’re going to Carson, you’re going to fall in love with Colorado over and over again. No matter where you land, you’re going to discover the beauty this world has to offer.

Moving to Europe or overseas (OCONUS) is something many people dream of doing. But how do you pick the best military bases OCONUS?

"We are going to Europe." That's what my husband told me one day twelve years ago. His detailer gave him a choice, and he picked Europe. Although we hadn't discussed what he should choose if asked, we had both talked about how amazing going to Europe would be. And soon we would be there too.

My son and I joined my husband over in Germany in 2006, and that is where we spent the next four years at two different duty stations. Looking back, there is so much to love about Germany and being stationed there. But some overseas locations are better than others.

Top 5 duty stations in the Army

Most of us here at American Grit are Marines (its a wonder we can put sentences together). Our Army insiders gave us the low down on the top 5 duty stations in the Army. We asked an Army drill sergeant (whose initials could also be the initials for Killing Time ) and several others, officers and other enlisted personnel to rank the best duty stations in the Army.

1. Caserma-Ederle, Italy

Milan is an hour away, Venice is 30 minutes away, the Italian Alps are an hour away…are you starting to see why this is a great place to be? Plus the wine and the food can’t be beaten and you’re on the Mediterranean Sea. There is so much history and beautiful art as well. It’s Italy, it’s nice!

2. Kelley Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany

Think about this for a minute. All the beer you can drink, and it’s good beer. Really really good beer! Plus with its central location you can visit a different country every weekend, kinda like they did in the 194…that’s not important. What is important is that this is a great place to be stationed.

3. Fort Lewis, Washington

So we’re starting to think the Army really likes cold places. Germany, now Fort Lewis. Do you guys like the cold? Seems counter-intuitive, but we’re just a bunch of Marines so…(we looked at pictures of Fort Lewis, we get it now) It’s absolutely beautiful there. As long as you’re an active person, Fort Lewis is a great place to be.

4. Fort Carson, Colorado

Ok, now we’re talking it’s an outdoorsman’s paradise. There are tons of national parks, plus all the skiing and rock climbing you can handle. This is a great place for active soldiers and Denver is only an hour and 30 minutes away. Whatever you want to do chances are you can find it or get to it quickly.

5. Yongsan, South Korea

So, one of our guys was in Korea for about a month, and he said there is tons of stuff to do in Korea. Aside from the fact that you have ‘you know who’ to the North, there is no shortage of activities, as the base is smack dab in the middle of Seoul. Shopping, great food, great drinking, museums, Seoul is a great place to be stationed, although…its super cold there.

Full disclosure, we talked to like four or five folks from the Army to get this top 5 duty stations in the Army list, so if you disagree, take it up with them. We’re Marines, we don’t know any better.

The number expands into the hundreds when you consider all the active military bases abroad in other countries.

Determining the best Army bases in the world is a tedious task, as there are several top-notch facilities worth considering.

Best Overall Army Bases in the U.S.

The United States Army supports close to 60 active bases on U.S. soil.

You can find a home in just about every type of climate and environment.

Virginia has the highest concentration of Army bases with nine, while Texas (five) and Georgia (four) are second and third.

Here are the top-rated Army installations in the nation:

#1 – Fort Liberty, North Carolina

Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) is direct to the north of Fayetteville in rural North Carolina.

The historic Army base is one of the largest in the world with nearly 50,000 active-duty soldiers calling it home.

Fort Liberty is home to the 82nd Airborne Division, Spec Ops Forces, and PsyOps.

Military families have options when it comes to housing, whether it’s the affordable midsize city of Fayetteville or the richer suburb of Southern Pines.

Fort Liberty is such a large installation that it offers more than one commissary along with fitness centers, classes, and MWR events.

The North Carolina location is near to Area J and Flight Line Park, McKellar’s Lodge, Tank Trail, and Mott Lake for weekend getaways.

#2 –Schofield Barracks, Hawaii

It is easy to see why Schofield Barracks is one of the most sought-after destinations for Army personnel.

The top military base exists in lovely Hawaii in Honolulu.

Competition is stiff to get stationed at Schofield Barracks yet you’ll love every waking moment if you are so fortunate.

The Army base is home to the 25th Infantry Division (nicknamed Tropic Lightning Division) along with USARHAW.

Schofield Barracks date all the way to the early 20th century when the base was established as a mobile defense for Pearl Harbor.

The barracks line up against the Waianae mountain range for a spectacular backdrop.

The weather is phenomenal but you’ll deal with higher housing and food costs.

#3 – Fort Carson, Colorado

Fort Carson exists in beautiful Colorado as part of a large military presence in Colorado Springs.

The Army post is massive with 137,000 acres of property, which extends into the nearby counties of Pueblo and Fremont.

Fort Carson is home to the 4th Infantry Division, 10th Special Forces, 4th Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB), 440th Civil Affairs Battalion (USAR), and many other units.

The Army installation also serves the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, and Colorado National Guard.

Army personnel refers to Fort Carson as “The Mountain Post,” with quick access to the Rocky Mountains and nearby Denver.

Colorado Springs is extremely supportive of service members as the U.S. Air Force Academy is here and many make the area their permanent home after retiring from the military.

Housing is more expensive in Colorado, yet the pleasant weather and outdoor adventures are well worth it for many service members.

Best Overseas Army Bases

The best Army bases are not just limited to the United States.

The United States operates the largest international presence in the world with hundreds of installations.

As a result, joining the Army is an exciting way to pursue your goals while seeing the world.

Here are a few of the best Army bases in the world that make fantastic places to get stationed.

#1 – Caserma Ederle, Italy

Caserma Ederle is an Army base in Vicenza, Italy.

The U.S. Army has troops stationed at Caserma-Ederle in support of the 173rd Airborne Brigade and United States Army Africa.

It also acts as the headquarters for the U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza of the United States Army Installation Management Command.

Where can you possibly go wrong staying in Italy while you get to serve the country overseas”

Vicenza is a half-hour from Venice and an hour from Milan.

You’ll get treated to some of the finest food, wine, and culture in the world, which makes Caserma-Ederle the most desirable overseas Army base.

#2 – Kelley Barracks, Germany

Kelley Barracks was formerly known as Helenen-Kaserne.

The barracks are in Stuttgart-Mohringen, Germany and are part of US Army Garrison Stuttgart.

Kelley Barracks serves as the headquarters for the United States Africa Command.

The southern Germany location provides quick escapes to Switzerland, France, or Belgium on extended leave.

Around the area of Stuttgart, you’ll appreciate delicious food and tasty beer.

There is also a historical significance to serving at Kelley Barracks considering its location in Germany and ties to World War II.

#3 – Yongsan Garrison/Camp Humphreys, South Korea

Yongsan Garrison means “dragon hill garrison” in Korean, which immediately sets the tone for a cool and exciting place to serve the United States abroad.

The garrison is not large (about two-thirds the size of Central Park in NYC) yet important to the conflicts with South Korea’s northern neighbor.

Yongsan Garrison is in Seoul, the capital of the country and the largest metropolis.

It represents the headquarters of the United States Forces Korea (USFK).

Yongsan Garrison was also the former home of the United States Army Garrison Yongsan until 2018.

The United States Army is currently transitioning more of its USFK headquarters to nearby Camp Humphreys (which is also a fantastic place to get stationed).

This is only about 55 miles south of Seoul. 

There is no shortage of recreation between dining, shopping, drinking, and sightseeing.

Best Army Bases for Families

There is little debate that serving the military while raising a family is extremely difficult.

You spend extended amounts of time away from your loved ones and don’t always get to see them every day.

Thankfully, some of the best Army bases in the country help support families with affordable housing, family-friendly amenities, and community support.

Consider these places to get stationed if you have a family:

#1 – Fort Moore, Georgia

Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning) hosts the Maneuver Center of Excellence, Army Infantry School, and Army Armor School.

The military establishment impressively supports more than 120,000 active-duty military, family, reserves, and retirees on a daily basis.

Fort Moore is one of the best Army bases for a reason, with terrific amenities on-site as well as close proximity to Columbus.

Columbus is the second-largest city in Georgia with a lot to see and do with activities that cater to families.

Housing is also affordable with fair but not spectacular weather.

#2 – Fort Sam Houston, Texas

Fort Sam Houston is another legendary Army base in the south and is beloved by families.

The base represents one of three main locations that are part of Joint Base San Antonio.

Fort Sam Houston caters to the U.S. Army, while Lackland and Randolph serve the Air Force.

Families cherish Fort Sam Houston for its proximity to San Antonio, affordable housing, and top-rated San Antonio Military Medical Center (“Home of Army Medicine”).

Austin, Dallas, and Houston are also within a reasonable drive with plenty of offerings.

Along with a housing community, the base also offers its own elementary, middle, and high schools.

#3 – Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri

Fort Leonard Wood is practically halfway between Springfield and St. Louis.

The popular Army base is known by locals as “Fort Lost in The Woods” because of its rural spot along Old Route 66.

Fort Leonard Wood supports the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, CBRN, MP Regiment, and Army Engineers.

Along with Fort Moore, it is a major training compound with nearly 80,000 soldiers spending time at the base every year.

Military base housing is available but there is fairly high competition.

Housing for families is also available in communities like Waynesville, St. Robert, and Plato.

It’s an excellent selection for families that prefer a quieter and rural place to live.

Best Army Bases for Singles

The Army is not restricted to service members with a significant other or children.

Many of the personnel are single and ready to mingle in various parts of the country.

Therefore, if you don’t have anyone attached at your hip then you’ll prefer these locations for how they cater to the singles crowd:

#1 – Fort Lewis, Washington

Fort Lewis is easily one of the best Army bases in the United States.

The military complex has a ton of history and its evolution has transformed into one of the largest bases in the world.

After McChord Air Force Base joined Fort Lewis in 2010, the military base has become one of the most sought-after for both branches, especially singles.

If you enjoy the outdoors then you’ll love everything the surrounding area has to offer.

Mt. Rainier is in your backyard along with every type of outdoor recreation you can envision.

The summers are especially beautiful and for city life, you are less than an hour away from Seattle.

#2 – Fort Greely, Alaska

Fort Greely presents itself to outdoor enthusiasts, as nothing is more wilderness in the nation than Alaska.

The “Home of the Rugged Professional” is very remote with a base that is more than 100 miles away from a big city (Fairbanks, Alaska).

Fort Greely supports the Alaska National Guard with an emphasis on monitoring the security and operation of a Missile Defense Site.

Since the base is in a remote part of the country, you have everything you need on-site.

Fort Greely offers a commissary, fitness center, barbershop, automotive mechanic, and chapels for every personal taste.

Singles that love the outdoors enjoy hunting, camping, fishing, hiking, and snowshoeing on days off.

#3 – Fort Story, Virginia

Fort Story is a great place to call home if you get stationed on the East Coast.

The military complex has a deep history with ties to the first English settlers in the 17th century.

Virginia Beach offers plenty of sun with beaches and quick access to the downtown area.

The on-base amenities are superb, with excellent housing (many of which offer oceanfront views).

While Fort Story is also a great place for families, singles will like that you are near the Chesapeake Bay and miles of hiking trails at First Landing State Park.

Ocean Breeze Waterpark and Atlantic Fun Park are great places to take a date.

Neptune Park is a fun outdoor venue for live music and socializing.

Best Army Bases for Couples

Couples may not have children, yet they still have their own unique needs and desires that differ from those of single soldiers.

The best Army bases for couples offer a solid mixture of affordable housing, nightlife, as well as on-post amenities.

Here are your top choices for couples:

#1 – Schofield Barracks, Hawaii

While living in Hawaii is nice, it doesn’t make nearly as much sense for military personnel with families due to the high cost of living.

However, couples can easily make Schofield Barracks work if they budget accordingly and avoid the common tourist pitfalls of Hawaii.

Spending time with a significant other in gorgeous Hawaii is a dream for just about everyone, so having the opportunity to take someone along with you is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

It’s likely that all your friends and family will want to come out and visit during your time.

So, even though you might feel like it’s forever until you reach the continental U.S. again, you’ll always have that special someone by your side when “island fever” might creep up.

#2 – Fort Belvoir, Virginia

Virginia is home to more Army bases than any other state in the nation.

Fort Belvoir is among its highlights where it sits on the former Belvoir plantation.

The property is used for better purposes these days in Fairfax County along the northern end of the Potomac River.

What makes Fort Belvoir a fascinating station for couples is the quick weekend access to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City are also within a long day’s drive for extended leaves.

The military complex has nearly twice as many personnel as The Pentagon and represents the largest employer in the county.

Housing on the post is necessary considering the median home cost in Fairfax is over half a million dollars.

The weather is special, with a lovely spring and autumn.

#3 – Fort Knox, Kentucky

The Bluegrass State offers an incredible Army base in Fort Knox.

It is one of the smaller military bases in the United States yet still important to U.S. Army operations.

Fort Knox features a rich history as Army camps in the region date to the Civil War.

The post is home to Cadet Command, U.S. Bullion Depository, and Human Resources Command.

Apartments are affordable in the area for couples, including Radcliff and Elizabethtown.

Louisville offers more nightlife and entertainment.

The fort provides an exclusive bowling alley, mini-golf course, and waterpark for couples looking for a quick and easy date night.

11 things to know before your first overseas pcs move.

Having top-notch PCS skills for moves inside the U.S. is one thing, but a military move overseas presents a whole new set of challenges and considerations that require a different level of organizing and prep.

Each OCONUS location has its own quirks, but the preparation for each has many similarities. Our family has been lucky enough to experience four overseas tours in the Pacific and Europe, and here are a few things I think you should know before you go, along with some experiences from other military families.

1) As with anything military-related, it’s all about the paperwork.

Double-check to ensure that every family member is listed on official orders and that names are spelled correctly. You’ll need that information in order to apply for the no-fee government passports required for PCS travel and all your other paperwork. Check with the specific location to see if you need a visa.

Schedule your overseas medical clearance ASAP, which you’ll need before travel can be arranged. The paperwork and appointments can be a headache, but the military must ensure the overseas location is equipped to handle your family’s medical needs.

Our last PCS was a complete mess. So stressful. But a very cool thing happened. Due to major visa delays, we ended up needing to send our visas/passports to a Marine family (who we'd never met) close(ish) to our departure airport. I used the AMAZING spouse network to reach out to the gal, explained our crazy situation, and asked her to receive and drive our visas 45 minutes to us. She was, of course, a rock star and completely understood this crazy life and was happy to help.

2) Ensure that your U.S. driver’s license is current or not nearing expiration.

You’ll probably need to test for a driver’s license overseas (for instance, the USAREUR license in Europe), but your stateside license must be valid in order to do so. Also, note that you must carry both licenses when you drive overseas.

From the 405th Army Field Support Brigade about obtaining your driver's license in Germany:  

To drive in Germany, U.S. personnel must have a valid stateside driver's license and obtain a USAREUR driver's license. The driving age is 18 and above in most European countries.  USAREUR driver's licenses are valid for five years. If someone's tour extends beyond five years, they must renew the license and pay the fee. Personnel must carry U.S. Stateside license with USAREUR license.  Keep in mind, only USAREUR license holders are authorized to drive a USAREUR registered vehicle. A USAREUR licenses is not a substitute for an international License. Personnel planning to travel should obtain an international driver's license.

You should be able to view a licensing test guide ahead of time to study before you arrive. Remember to contact your insurance company to update your auto insurance policy and transfer your coverage overseas. On that note, you may wish to purchase additional roadside assistance once in country, such as with ADAC in Germany.

3) Get insider information about the area from your assigned overseas sponsor.

Your overseas sponsor assigned by the military will know all the insider tips and tricks for your move and arrival. 4) Begin downsizing now.

Overseas housing is typically much smaller than what you’re accustomed to, so begin downsizing and purging your belongings. You may also need to take advantage of the long-term storage the military provides to stow larger items or things you can live without for the next few years.

For instance, you might want to leave behind your oversized sectional sofa, large beds, or table with two leaves and twelve chairs. Plus, you’ll want to leave room for finds from your future overseas shopping excursions!

If you’re hoping to live in military housing, each overseas installation will have differing availability for housing, so submit an advance application through the Housing Office at your installation with a copy of your PCS orders.

If you’ll be living off base, don’t commit to a rental before checking in with your Housing Office.

5) Understand how your household goods will be handled.

One unique aspect of an overseas move is that all your boxes will be crated and sealed shut and require the military member's signature. On the receiving end, it’s important to visually inspect each crate and seal before signing off. Make note of any broken or cut tape for potential claims.

6) Prepare your pets.

Just as you prepare your family for the overseas move, don't forget to make necessary arrangements for your pets as well, including medical clearance before travel. Contact your veterinarian as soon as you receive overseas orders. You’ll be required to ensure that all vaccinations are up to date and get your pet a health certificate within a certain number of days before leaving the country, so book this appointment early.

Using a military vet for required paperwork is ideal, as they are well-versed in what’s required. You’ll also need to check in with the Veterinary Treatment Facility at your new base.

• Base housing regulations regarding number and type of pets
• Arrangements for boarding if pet-friendly temporary lodging isn’t available
• Paperwork you'll need in order to clear your pet from your current installation

7) Explore strategies to help kids adjust to moving overseas. 

Research the new location. Go online or head to the library together to learn about the new country, language, foods, popular music, and local sports teams.

Prepare for travel with children . Overseas flights are long, and your young ones may have never traveled by air for that length of time or even at all. Emotions from goodbyes may also be running high, so a little preparation will be key. 

Stay positive and plan for fun. Create a bucket list together of all the destinations you're eager to explore. Whether you mark them on a wall map with colorful pushpins, jot them down in a travel journal, or utilize a handy map app on your smartphone, the excitement of planning your adventures can help fuel anticipation for the journey ahead.

Moving is difficult, and it’s important to allow time for grief and goodbyes. Still, make a point of looking forward to all the new experiences waiting!

Courtney Woodruff shares in 5 Ways to Get Military Kids Excited About Moving Overseas:

Treat the moving process like a vacation! Even though an OCONUS PCS is far from my idea of a relaxing getaway, it involves many key elements of family trips that kids love: exciting transportation experiences, spending the night in hotels, exploring new cities, and dining out. Research parks, unique activities for children, and family-friendly accommodations and restaurants your kids will look forward to visiting along the way. In between checking major items off your to-do list, make a plan to take time to relax, have fun and enjoy the journey together. You deserve it.  

8) Realize how long you'll be without your household goods. 

For a while, anyway. You may not see your belongings for some time—even months, depending on your housing situation. You may live in temporary lodging or housing for an extended time.

Pack luggage with an eye to the upcoming season or ship a box of the next season’s clothes or things you'll want right away to your forwarding address so you’re not forced to spend money on items you already own.

9) Learn a few key phrases in the local language.

Start off on the right foot with your new neighbors by learning some simple greetings or commonplace phrases. Download English to German, Spanish, Italian, or other language apps, or carry a phrasebook. This is something you can do together as a family!

Attempting to communicate will go a long way, and even if you're stumbling, locals will usually be pleased that you tried. Often, they will be able to speak some English and will try to help you out.

Military spouse Jessica Lynn shares:

I was surprised that it took me as long as it did—a good six months—before I felt comfortable living in Italy. I've traveled overseas and I lived in England before our assignment in Italy, so thought I would acclimate sooner than I did. My advice to help anyone get into a groove sooner rather than later is to completely immerse yourself in the culture. Learn the language and at least attempt to speak it with the locals. Start with learning the basics for food—a common factor between everyone—and go from there. They'll forgive you and help you adjust if they see you try. Knowing how to literally speak their language will go a long way!

10) Attend newcomers’ and in-processing briefings.

I know you’re jetlagged, tired, and going through a bit of culture shock when you first arrive at an overseas duty station. However, connections and the information at these briefings or meetups will be invaluable, and you can connect with people in the know like school liaison officers and family and installation support services. You'll also usually meet others like you who’ve recently moved overseas. This is a great way to feel connected and not so isolated—very important when you first arrive in a new country.

Your installation’s Facebook group or website will also provide vital information and can help you make connections even before arrival.

11) Embrace your overseas experience.

In the busyness of an OCONUS PCS move , it can be easy to forget what an incredible opportunity this is. Once the logistics of moving are behind you, it’s good to remember that, from the moment your feet touch the ground, you’re living a dream. Celebrate differences, try new foods, travel, and be adventurous!

LeAnna Brown of  The Economical Excursionist  gives this perspective:

I'd say that living overseas and taking advantage of that new geographical location by traveling is one of the best things that could happen to you. You start to realize how small this big world really is. You begin to see different cultures, people, and ways of life from a new view which forces you to grow as an individual. While getting to experience things that you never could back in the U.S., it also gives you an appreciation for the small things back home as well!

Annual KidVid Contest

• The Foreign Service Institute’s Overseas Briefing Center (OBC), in collaboration with the Foreign Service Youth Foundation (FSYF), hosts the annual worldwide KidVid Contest. Contestants submit an original video that depicts life for Foreign Service youth at their post. The purpose of this contest is to develop a library of videos that will help FS families anticipate what life overseas is like from a kid’s perspective. The Overseas Briefing Center administers the contest and FSYF awards cash prizes to winners.  Foreign Service youth, ages 10-18 who are posted overseas, are eligible to enter this contest.

PCS Season: 5 Things to Know About Unaccompanied Tours

What’s an unaccompanied tour? This type of permanent change of station move has the servicemember relocating to a new assignment without “command sponsorship” of a spouse or dependents. It is not the same as a deployment or temporary duty.

In other words, the military family members are not listed on the orders and are not authorized to accompany the service member to the new assignment. An unaccompanied tour is typically outside the continental United States (CONUS), typically lasting one or two years (see below).

5. What it Means to go on an Unaccompanied Tour

An unaccompanied tour means precisely what the name implies; spouses and dependents are not authorized to join the servicemember in the new location and do not have the support of the local command to be there.

Sometimes, a spouse may decide to travel to the new country regardless. However, no on-base services such as base housing, medical clinics, child care, or employment services are available to non-command-sponsored spouses or dependents.

4. Types of Unaccompanied Tours

There are one-year “hardship” or “remote” tours that have included places like South Korea, Iceland, and Guam.

There are also two-year unaccompanied tours that are more typical duty locations like Germany, Japan, Spain, and elsewhere. Unaccompanied tours lasting two years have different considerations for packing and moving than those lasting just one year.

You may be given an unaccompanied tour as a married service member for a variety of reasons, including the previously mentioned lack of essential services for family members at the gaining base. If you are married and receive PCS orders, you’ll need to ensure your family is command-sponsored if you want them to accompany you overseas. Sometimes command sponsorship is not possible, hence the need for certain unaccompanied tours of duty.

3. Unaccompanied Tours for Single Servicemembers

The single service member may be authorized a certain amount of personal property to be shipped to the overseas location, but much depends on the duration of the assignment. Your weight limits and other options will be explained in out processing appointments, but there is also plenty of information at your losing base’s official site.

Those on a one-year tour may be authorized to ship less of their belongings than those on a two-year tour. Depending on whether the PCS is a hardship assignment or not, single soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Guardians with overseas assignments may need to put some of their belongings in storage.

Dislocation Allowance

A single service member traveling to an overseas location may qualify for a Dislocation Allowance, which Defense.gov defines as an allowance designed to “partially reimburse a service member, with or without dependents, for the expenses incurred in relocating the member’s household on a PCS.”

Upon arrival at the new duty station, the service member will be assigned a room in a dorm, barracks, or other ‘single soldier” type living arrangements on post. Single servicemembers, especially junior enlisted, may be required to live on base for their duty at the overseas location.

2. Unaccompanied Tours for Married Service Members

Married service members have more complex options when it’s time to PCS overseas to an unaccompanied tour. The spouse and any dependent children can stay in their current home, and the servicemember will continue to be paid a housing allowance for that location.

Housing Allowance Options

If the family decides to pack up and move, the housing allowance may be based on their new location. There is another option for those who get a remote assignment and a “follow-on” assignment immediately after–in cases where the follow-on location is known, the family may be allowed to move to that duty location and draw a housing allowance there.

That is a common move amongst military families who know it’s an option. Not all PCS moves include a follow-on assignment, and in cases where a follow-on is authorized, the second location may not be assigned right away. Much depends on variables, including mission needs, force protection levels, and other factors.

Family Separation Allowance

One important benefit for military members assigned to an unaccompanied tour? The Family Separation Allowance or FSA.

Defense.gov describes this benefit as designed to “defray a reasonable amount of extra expenses that result from such separation” and is paid monthly. At press time that amount was listed at $250 but this number is always subject to change. Check your base finance office or the latest updates on this allowance.

FSA is not meant to offset the costs of the unaccompanied tour fully but it is “payable in addition to any other allowance or per diem to which a Service member may be entitled,” according to the DoD as long as one of the following is true:

• Dependents are not authorized to be moved “to or near” the Service member’s permanent duty station at government expense;
• The military member serves on board a ship away from the home port of the ship for more than 30 continuous days, OR;
• The military member is on temporary duty for more than 30 continuous days, and the dependents do not reside at or near the temporary duty station.

The FSA is not payable when a service member volunteers for an unaccompanied tour at a location where accompanied tours are authorized. This benefit is not automatic, it must be applied for using DD Form 1561 , Statement to Substantiate Payment of Family Separation Allowance.

1. What to Know About Unaccompanied Tours

In addition to special pay such as the Dislocation Allowance and Family Separation Allowance, you may have special leave benefits when on a remote assignment or even a two-year unaccompanied tour.

If you are at a remote location, you may have a preference for Space-Available flights, and there is a special type of leave offered (depending on your assignment) that could help you get home mid-tour to catch up with family and friends.

Environmental and Morale Leave or EML is “a benefit which utilizes military airlift to provide relief by allowing those eligible to travel on DoD owned and operated aircraft at a higher Space-Available priority while traveling on EML orders.” Ask your gaining unit about EML options there.

Overseas assignment

I’m at 7.5 years in, SSG, and in my reenlistment window. I received orders for my next PCS which will be overseas. Since it’s an overseas assignment do I have to do a minimum of a 4 year contract since the assignment is 36 months on station?

I’m trying to do the shortest contract before I HAVE to enter the Career Status Program.
