If you have to turn in a project file at school, you may be wondering how to decorate the cover. Don’t worry, there are lots of ideas and techniques you can use to create a personalized file, no matter what kind of project it is.

Things You Should Know

  • Make sure your project file matches the theme of the project and class subject.
  • Try designing an outdoor scene for a nature-themed project, using geometric shapes for a math project, or creating a map for a geography project.
  • You can use ribbon, stencils , stickers, and glitter to decorate your project file.

Coming up with Ideas and a Layout

Step 1 Review the project guidelines.

  • For instance, your teacher may not allow clipart or printed images on the file.

Step 2 Match the project file to the theme of the project.

  • For instance, if your project is about marine life, you could make the project file blue and decorate it with pictures of coral and fish.
  • Alternatively, if your project is about a specific book, you could draw pictures of the characters or sketch a scene from the story.

Step 3 Outline your ideas before you begin decorating.

  • You can use a ruler to figure out how much space you’ll use for each element as well as to help you center text or pictures.
  • You don’t need to add tons of details; simply map out a quick sketch with text boxes, stick figures, and the like.

Step 4 Don’t make the project file too busy.

  • Aim to leave at least a quarter of the page blank.
  • If you decide to add text or a title, leave room around it so it’s easy to read.

Step 5 Keep your work as neat as possible.

Designing the File by Subject

Step 1 Make an outdoor scene for nature-themed projects.

  • For instance, if you’re depicting a bug’s habitat, use a green marker to draw grass of varying lengths “growing” up from the bottom of the page. Add layers of dirt in addition to worms, insects, and plants to fill out the project file.

Step 2 Include lots of images for an art project.

  • Alternatively, you could create a border using the number sequence for Pi.

Step 4 Cover the file in letters, symbols, or characters for an English project.

  • If you want to add symbols, choose ones that are central to the story, such as an albatross and ship for “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
  • If you use letters to decorate the file, be sure to vary the order and use every letter of the alphabet. Use a variety of colors to make the cover more interesting. [3] X Research source

Step 5 Create a map...

Adding Decorations

Step 1 Cover the front of the file with a new sheet of paper, if necessary.

  • You can use white school glue, a glue stick, or rubber cement.

Step 2 Add washi tape or ribbon to make a border.

  • Cut the ribbon or tape into four pieces—two that match the length of the file and two that match the width of it.
  • Stick the washi tape to the edges of each side, or use glue dots to attach the ribbon.

Step 3 Draw the border by hand if you prefer.

  • Ideas for the border design include swirls, shapes, letters, and flowers.

Step 4 Use stencils or stickers to add text for a professional look.

  • You could also print out the text on a separate sheet of paper, cut it out, and glue it to the file.
  • Alternatively, if you have nice handwriting , you can write the title or text by hand. You may want to use bubble letters or another technique to make the text stand out.

Step 5 Include pictures that reflect the theme of the project.

  • For instance, if you are doing the project for a chemistry class, add pictures of test tubes and beakers.

Step 6 Add extra detail with cutouts.

  • For example, if your project file is decorated with a tree, cut leaves or flowers out of construction paper and glue them to the branches.

Step 7 Make the file stand out by using glitter or shiny paper.

  • You could also cut out a piece of shiny paper that’s smaller than the project file by about 3 inches (7.6 cm) on each side. Glue it to the center of the file to make it stand out from the background.

Expert Q&A

Things you’ll need.

  • Construction or scrapbook paper
  • White school glue, glue dots, a glue stick, or rubber cement
  • Ribbon or washi tape
  • Pencils, pens, or markers
  • Stickers or stencils

By: Author Leap of Faith Crafting

Home » Crafts

Get inspired to create more with paper from this list of 50 paper craft ideas. Crafting on a budget has never been easier!

Probably like the majority of crafters, I started out by making easy paper crafts, especially when my kids were little. I would scour the internet and Pinterest and find fun crafts to keep my kids busy on a rainy day and also on those days when it was too hot to go outside!

Luckily times have changed and now there are tons of great ideas out there all from using paper plates to crepe paper. But sorting through all the fun paper crafts can be a bit time-consuming, so I decided to round up a list of cool paper crafts so you have them all in one place.

And the best part about these easy paper craft ideas is that they don’t cost a lot of money and for most of them kids of all ages will have so much fun making them.

There are so many different types of paper you can use for crafts including construction paper, card stock, copy paper, craft paper, tissue paper, crepe paper, glitter card stock or paper, kraft paper, butcher paper, scrapbook paper, and more!

So break out all that old scrapbook paper, a pair of scissors, some glue sticks, googly eyes, tape, and let the kids go crazy creating anything their little imaginations can come up with.

easy paper crafts

My youngest makes hundreds of little characters and toys out of just copy paper and tape (Santa even puts about 15 rolls of tape in his stocking since he uses all of mine up!). It really is amazing what you can make out of paper!

And not to mention that working with a piece of paper is a great way to increase their fine motor skills without them even knowing!

Be prepared to get excited to start making some amazing paper art projects! I do have a few Cricut project ideas in here, but if you want more inspiration make sure to check out my Cricut cardstock ideas here.

Tips for Crafting Beautiful Paper Decorations

When it comes to crafting paper decorations, there are a few steps that you can take in order to ensure a successful project.

Here are our top tips when it comes to crafting your own paper decorations.

Select the right type of paper – check the paper weight and thickness recommendations for each project

Work in a clean and organized space – this can make it a whole lot easier to find your materials

Make clean folds – this helps with the overall appearance and structure of the project

Use the right amount of glue – too little won't hold the project together, and too much will make the paper soggy, so always check the project recommendations

Paper Craft Home Decor Ideas: Easy Wall Hanging Crafts

Layered KIND paper craft home decor shadow box with a rainbow background showing through the letters and butterfly and flower details designed by JenniferMaker

Share the love!

Layered KIND paper craft home decor in a shadow box designed by JenniferMaker

Learn how to make hygge-inspired 3D layered paper craft home decor!

Layered paper shadow box projects are always super popular and fun to make! I’ve seen many of you make beautiful versions of our sea animal mandalas and layered heart designs . This time, I wanted to create a wall decoration idea using letters . I just love how it combines two words that mean a lot to me, “Home,” “Love,” and “Kind” along with beautiful, intricate designs in some of my favorite colors. And I’ve made four versions of this paper craft home decor project , so you can make one or all of them! I’ll show you how to cut and assemble them fast and easy!

Watch the full step-by-step paper craft home decor   assembly video below:

Get the free SVG cut file for this project

These shadow box designs are inspired by my love of “hygge” (pronounced “hyoo-guh”). If you don’t know, hygge is a Danish word that evokes feelings of coziness and togetherness . In essence hygge means creating a warm, comfortable atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. I mean, is there anything better?

My KIND rainbow design is one I wish we all had hanging on a wall. Kindness is so important to show to others (and ourselves!) , and seeing it every day is a great way to remember!

I’ve included spring and fall versions of the HOME design so you can do home decor makeovers for different seasons . That’s one of my favorite things about simple paper crafts!

And the LOVE design is perfect for anywhere you want to celebrate with its bright colors and happy details. It would look perfect in a craft room , I think!

HOME shadow box paper craft home decor with a rainbow and a free SVG cut file

Even though these shadow box designs might look complicated, I’ve done all the hard work for you and the cutting machine will do the rest! Wait until you see how fun and easy this is to put together!

To make this paper craft home decor, you need about 9-10 sheets of good, quality cardstock . I suggest a solid core 65 lb. or 80 lb. cardstock — this is especially important when you are cutting intricate designs like this. Quality matters in paper crafting and good materials are a simple way to save time and money in the long run.

LOVE shadow box paper craft home decor with a flowers and a free SVG cut file

We will also use some foam adhesive tape to attach the layers and a 12 by 12 inch shadowbox… and that’s it for materials! Easy peasy wall art!

You can cut your cardstock with a craft knife , but it’ll be much easier and faster to cut it with a cutting machine like a Cricut. And if you do use a Cricut machine as I am, you’ll also want to use your fine-point blade , a blue LightGrip or green StandardGrip machine mat , a scraper tool , a brayer , and a weeding tool . I cut my examples on a full size Cricut Maker , but the designs can be shrunk to cut on a Cricut Joy ! If you use a shadow box with glass , remember to wipe down the glass with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth to make it shine!

Instructions

Step 1: get my free paper craft home decor design files.

First, download my free Paper Craft Home Decor SVG/DXF/PDF files, Design #341, from my free resource library . There are four different designs – two "HOME," one "LOVE," and one "KIND." These pieces of art fit in a 12” x 12” shadow box and are perfect for decorating your home!

You can cut these layered designs by hand with the printable PDF, or cut them on a cutting machine with the SVG cut files. Let me show you how to cut these on a Cricut cutting machine.

First, upload the SVG cut file of your choice to your design software. If you're not sure how to upload an SVG cut file to Cricut Design Space, watch this helpful video SVGs Made Simple training series I made .

If you're on an iPhone or iPad, here's how to download and upload SVG files to the Cricut Design Space app .

This is what the Paper Craft Home Decor SVG cut files look like in Design Space when you import them to Cricut Design Space.

The Home designs have 10 layers. The Love and Kind designs have 9 layers.

Paper Craft Home Decor Home Colorful Cricut Design Space

All four designs are sized to fit perfectly in these 12" x 12" shadow boxes . If you are using a different shadow box, make sure to measure the inside of the display area to ensure your design shows as intended.

TIP: To change the size, click on the design on the canvas and then click and drag the arrows on the bottom right side until everything is the size you want. You can also change the measurements in the size fields at the top of the canvas. In order to maintain the correct proportions, make sure the padlock remains locked, otherwise the image will become distorted.

Paper Craft Home Decor Home Hygge Resize

STEP 2: CUT THE LAYERED HOME OR LOVE DESIGNS

Once your size is set, click "Make It" in the upper right corner.

Paper Craft Home Decor Home Hygge Cricut Design Space Make It

There is nothing to change on the Prepare screen but Cricut Design Space will display the color order in which the cuts will happen. This can be helpful so you know how to organize your cardstock to prepare for cutting.

I set my material setting to Medium Cardstock with "More" pressure for a clean cut.

Place your first mat's cardstock face up on a clean blue LightGrip machine mat and use a brayer to make sure it's fully adhered. Make sure the Fine-Point Blade is loaded in Clamp B, then load your mat into your machine and press the Go button.

Paper Craft Home Decor Load Mat in Cricut

TIP: If you have any issues cutting, check out my Cutting Problems Guide . It contains all the tips I use to get clean cuts consistently.

When your Cricut is done cutting the first layer, unload the mat and flip it over. Gently peel the mat away from the cardstock. ( Take a look at this tip if you're having issues with your cardstock curling or ripping ).

TIP: As you cut your layers, each design will leave behind cut-out pieces on your mat. I carefully peeled them off using my fingers and also used my Cricut XL Scraper tool to easily remove those pieces from the mat.

Paper Craft Home Decor Use XL Scraper on mat

You will be prompted to load your second mat. Repeat the steps above until all of your layers are cut.

TIP: As you remove each layer of cardstock from the mat you may find that some pieces didn’t cut all the way through, if that happens I find it helpful to use the weeding tool to pop those pieces out.

STEP 3: ASSEMBLE YOUR PAPER CRAFT HOME DECOR

Once you have your pieces cut, I recommend you refer back to your canvas to review the order of layers. It will be helpful to organize your cut cardstock in the correct order to help you stay organized during assembly. Apply double-sided foam adhesive squares to the backside of all the layers. We will work from the bottom layer up to the top.

Center and place your second-to-last layer on your bottom blue layer.

TIP: As you place each layer on top of each other, lay them down lightly so you can adjust your placement if needed, then press to the underlying layer.

Paper Craft Home Decor Align Bottom Layers

Now take the next bottommost layer and add the foam adhesive to the back.

Paper Craft Home Decor Apply Next Adhesive Squares

Gently place it on the second-to-last layer.

Paper Craft Home Decor Assemble Next Layers

Continue the process by applying foam adhesive squares to the back of the next bottommost layer and then placing it on the below layer.

Paper Craft Home Decor Apply More Foam Adhesive to Next Layers of Cardstock

The process is the same as you work your way to the top. Once your top layer is applied, it is time to frame your beautiful artwork!

STEP 4: ASSEMBLING THE SHADOW BOX

First, let’s get our shadow box ready. I always like to clean the glass with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol. I clean both the inside and out, so I’m sure my design will look its very best once I give it a home.

Next, turn over your design and apply adhesive foam to the back of your layered design.

Press your design onto the the back board piece of your shadow box.

NOTE: You can use hot glue instead of foam tape for this part if you’re worried about it staying put.

Assemble the frame and close the tabs on the back.

Answers to Your Questions About How to Make Paper Craft Home Decor

Q: What kind of paper do I use? A: You can really use any 65 lb-80 lb. or higher cardstock to make layered paper craft home decor — it’s your choice what color and texture you want to use. If you want to use the exact same materials I used, check the materials list above. I do recommend high-quality, soild-core cardstock because it cuts easily and won’t show white edges!

Q: How do I keep my layers stuck together? A: I used double-sided foam adhesive squares applied to the underside of each layer, which gave the layered paper an interesting look with depth and shadow. But you could also use adhesive foam circles or 3D Zots to achieve a similar effect. And you can also just keep the layered flat against one another by using tacky glue like Bearly Art Precision Craft Glue or spray adhesive instead. There are no rules, just what you prefer!

Q: Can I cut these paper layers on a Cricut Joy? A: While you could resize this project down to fit on a Cricut Joy, I think the detail might be difficult to cut out cleanly. But feel free to give it a try! ( Update : I can confirm that this can be resized and cut on a Cricut Joy as one of my wonderful crafters reported a successful cut!!)

Q: My cardstock keeps ripping on the intricate cuts. What can I do? A: Be sure you’re using a clean and sticky machine mat, good quality cardstock, and a clean blade. See my Cricut Cutting Problems post for all the tips I use to get clean cuts every time.

Q: What decorations can you make out of paper?

A: There are so many easy paper crafts out there and I have some great ideas for you! Depending on your goals and supplies, check out my tutorials on making card stock paper flowers , party decor for holidays and special occasions, and canvas wall art !

Q: What can I make out of paper at home?

A: With a Cricut, you don’t need excellent fine motor skills and a high skill level to make a cute paper craft. Try my free tutorials for a paper flower craft with crepe paper , giant paper butterflies , a moving handmade card , and many more in my free library !

Q: What are some DIY crafts for home decor?

A: In addition to wall hangings, you can add a personal touch to your living space or home office in many ways! Try adding some tissue paper flowers to a boring wall, drape paper garlands on the living room mantle,  or branch out into vinyl projects for even more beautiful crafts!

What is Construction Paper

First things first, let’s clear up any confusion.

If you are wondering what construction paper is, let me help you with that.

Construction paper is the most common craft paper, it usually comes in stacks of multi-colored or patterned sheets and can be used in various crafts. It is slightly stiff, can easily be cut, and glues easily.

All the projects in this papercraft collection can be made with simple construction paper, although it can often be substituted for printer paper, cardstock or origami paper.

And if you still have a few of those pretty patterned scrapbook paper pads in your stash, these will work too!

Other basic tools you’ll need are quality pair of scissors, craft glue or a hot glue gun and glue sticks, and maybe something like crayons of soft chalk.

10 of Our Most Beautiful Tissue and Crepe Paper Crafts

assignment paper decoration ideas

If you're thinking about using crepe and tissue paper for a project, you can find inspiration here to master gift wrapping and expand your creative feats to make other masterpieces.

These types of paper come in unique colors and textures, and they can be used to produce unforgettable designs. Unlike the thickness of cardstock, crepe paper is stretchy and sturdy enough to be used with a dry iron. Tissue paper is a great filler product for gift packaging or any other creative projects. In this world of crafting, anything from crepe paper carnations to tissue paper lanterns goes. The best part? There are still plenty more crepe and tissue paper projects to choose from in this collection.

A perfect first project? Paper flowers are beautiful for any occasion and last longer than the garden-grown variety. We also like that kids can join in on the fun of making them. The varying colors of paper will be eye-catching, and the projects will be easy to understand and exciting for crafters of any level. Another craft to add to your docket includes crepe paper birds. This can knock the average paper craft out of the park with simple-to-follow steps. With any crafting project, keeping it mess-free is also ideal, and paper projects absolutely fit the bill. You will be free of excessive glitter and abundances of sticky materials, leaving you with trouble-free cleanup and prize-worthy works of art.

All of this variety will allow you to use crepe and tissue paper to package gifts with pizzazz and also ramp up your décor in DIY style . So, choose your paper and bring your creativity to the forefront to test out your limitless skills.

Tissue Paper Pom-Poms and Luminarias

Hosting a brunch, a baby shower, or a holiday feast? These pom-poms and luminarias in bright hues are worthy of cheering about. The simple project requires only tissue paper, 24-gauge floral wire, and scissors.

Crepe Paper Carrots

Create a craft that looks good enough to eat. These crepe paper carrots are simple enough to create that even young kids can make them. Loosely wrap orange streamer to form carrot shape, making it thicker at top. Tuck in gifts as you work. Press end of paper down into top. Fold green crepe paper in half across its grain. Download leaf template, and trace onto folded paper. Cut out; bunch up. Tuck leaves into carrot top; secure with dab of hot glue.

Crepe Paper Birds

Make these wildlife creations look authentic by first making the head and body: Use a glue gun to affix a small polystyrene ball to the rounded end of a larger polystyrene egg (for each bird, vary placement slightly to create different body postures); let dry. Cut a seven-inch square of colored crepe paper. Lay the body near the bottom edge. Beginning at the breast, wrap the body, stretching the paper to fit the contours as you go. Brush with tacky glue. Taper back end to create tail. Twist front end to create a beak; brush with glue. Trim with scissors while paper is wet; let dry. Wrap beak in brown floral tape; trim. For eyes, press in map tacks. Make wings: Tear strips of crepe paper in desired hues. Overlap strips to create a color gradient, and glue. Cut out two rectangles; glue to each side of the bird. Taper ends to form wing shapes. For the breast, cut a paper oval in a contrasting color, and glue.

Crepe Paper Tulip

Who said making flowers had to be difficult? This tulip craft provides a template to get you started and requires just six petals, a fringe stamen, and two elongated leaves to achieve the effortless floral look.

Splattered Tissue Paper Flowers

Let your creative side run wild with this tissue paper project. You can add colors of your choice to make your splatter tissue paper flowers pop. Following package instructions, assemble a few tissue paper flowers from both packages. Fill your spray bottle with water, and add satin paint as needed; shake well. Spray your assembled tissue flowers with one color at a time. If the pump on the bottle sprays while held halfway down, and not lifted back fully to the top, it will release larger drops. Don't forget to spray the tips of some layers underneath for added depth.

Tissue Paper Boa

Tissue paper boas aren't just fitting for the holidays. This fun addition to your attire can add style to any party hosted in your home. Start by cutting five-inch strips of red tissue paper (approximately 24 inches long) using a ruler and craft knife. Cut tissue paper into fringe using scissors (one-half inches wide and two inches long) along both edges of the strips. Draw a bead of glue down the center of one layer of fringed tissue with the ballpoint glue pen. Do not glue all the way to the end, leave a one inch space before the end. Place a second layer on top. Continue to glue and layer with three more pieces, leaving the one inch unglued end. Repeat this process with another set of tissue paper. This adds length to your boa. Connect the two sets of fringed tissue by gluing the ends (that were left unglued), and by alternating the layers from each set.

Crepe Paper Carnation

This carnation will look pretty enough to decorate for any event. Use three strips of petals (get the template below), each 12 inches. Tightly pleat bottom edge of one strip, then wrap it firmly around itself, keeping bottom edge aligned. Secure with floral tape. Repeat with other strips. Tape bases of rolled strips to the end of a plain floral wire and to one another, wrapping tape down stem. Pull petals outward to create a dome.

Crepe Paper Lotus Blossoms

These handmade paper creations are easy to make and will look like fresh flowers in full bloom. Begin by cutting two four-inch squares of yellow tissue paper. Stack squares, and fold in half. Using fringe scissors, cut fringe along the open side, leaving fold intact. Slide an eight-inch length of wire inside fold. Scrunch tissue paper along wire, creating a small pom-pom, the "stamen." Fold wire in half, and twist ends together to make a "stem." Cut pink floral crepe paper into a wide rectangle, about four by 12 inches, with the paper grain running vertically. Using regular scissors, cut "petals": Cut into one long side at three-fourths inch intervals, leaving a one-inch margin along opposite side. Without stretching crepe paper, cut rounded points at the end of each petal. Coil pink rectangle, petals up, around yellow stamen, wrapping it snugly but not so tight that you stretch the paper. (Try to stagger the petals so they don't align as you wrap) Secure the pink coil with rubber band. Wrap the base of coil with floral tape, covering rubber band, then wind around wire stem. Starting with the outside petals, shape each by gently stretching and curving the crepe paper. Then bend the petals back to open the blossom. Fluff yellow stamen with your fingertips. For the leaf, cut a five-inch square of green crepe paper, with the paper grain running vertically. Pinch the bottom edge, loosely pleating it, to make a fan shape; secure with floral tape to make a small stem. Using regular scissors, trim edge to make a rounded leaf. With your fingers, gently shape the leaf into a cup. Set it inside a round wooden box alongside the lotus blossom, or attach the leaf and blossom stems using floral tape.

Crepe Paper Cookie Gifting

Colorful crepe paper turns humble paper-towel tubes into cute containers for gifting cookies. Pack small treats in parchment first to keep them fresh, then slide them into a tube. Wrap it with paper, and seal each end with a twist.

Basic Crepe Paper Cap

Create this classic craft with ease by cutting a strip of crepe paper one-and-a-half inches longer than the circumference of the wearer's head and double the height you want the cap to be (our cap is 10 inches tall, so we measured the crepe to 20 inches high). The grain of the crepe should run along the height of the cap. Fold crepe in half lengthwise; the folded edge will wrap around the wearer's head, forming the bottom of the cap. Sew ends together by hand or on the sewing machine, forming a vertical seam to be worn at the back of the head. Trim seam allowance. Gather the top edge of the cap, either by hand or with a hand-basting stitch that you then pull to gather. Secure the gathered top by binding it with several wraps of floral tape, so it resembles a stem.
