Today, every nation, region, and community grapples with the challenges posed by pollution, a problem primarily driven by human activities that have been degrading our natural environment for centuries.

From burning fossil fuels to deforestation, nearly every self-serving human activity contributes to environmental pollution. The cars we drive, the plastic products we use, the clothes we wear, and the waste we generate—all these actions play a role in polluting our planet. In response to this escalating crisis, various governmental and international organizations have been established to address pollution and mitigate its impacts. One notable entity is the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which tackles pollution, its causes, and its consequences on a global scale.

‘Hello and welcome to all my mates and teachers. Today, I stand before you to present my speech on pollution. There is a lot about pollution in our Geography books. From the causes of pollution to its preventive measures. But have we ever followed any of these preventive measures?

There are different types of pollution, such as air, soil, water, radioactivity, noise, etc. All these pollutions have different sources, which not only disturb the natural environment but also have adverse effects on human health, biodiversity, ecosystems, and the climate.

Pollution is a fight that requires a collective effort from developed and developing countries. Recently, there was a debate where the first world countries were requesting others to equally take responsibility for environmental pollution. However, this is not the case, because the major damage to the environment is caused by developmental activities in these first-world countries.

The damage is already down, and now is not the try to cry over spilled milk. We are in this together, and we have to take responsibility for our actions. With well-structured, alternative strategies and cooperation, we can combat pollution.

‘Hello and welcome to everyone present here. As a conscious human being, I am happy to present my speech on pollution. Pollution is known as the introduction of unwanted substances into the environment, which disrupts the natural environment and overall health of the planet. One of the major concerns of the pollution is climate change.

The history of pollution is older than one century. In 1896, a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrhenius first predicted the changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, which may substantially increase the surface temperature and because a major cause of global warming.

The first international summit to consider pollution as a global concern was the 1972 Stockholm Convention. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was the outcome of this international climate convention. UNEP deals with all environmental problems at the global level and organizes various environmental programs to raise awareness about pollution, climate change, global warming, etc.

Today, our terrestrial and marine ecosystems are facing existential threats due to pollution. Deforestation, industrial waste, and chemical pollutants are wreaking havoc on biodiversity. The loss of habitats, the decline of species, and the imbalance in our ecosystems paint a grim picture of the toll pollution takes on our natural world.

There are different types of pollution, such as air, water, noise, soil, radioactivity, thermal, plastic, etc. Burning of fossil fuels, industrial processes, vehicle emissions, and agricultural activities causes air pollution. Industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, untreated sewage, oil spills, and dumping of chemicals in rivers, ponds and lakes cause water pollution. Improper disposal of industrial waste, agricultural practices, use of pesticides and fertilizers, and contamination from hazardous substances cause soil pollution. The list goes on as new types of pollution are being discovered by scientists.

Pollution not only affects our environment but also disrupts our daily life as it affects our health, and biodiversity and is a major cause of climate change. Every country and its citizens must recognize the importance of addressing pollution through regulations, sustainable alternative practices, and environmental conservation efforts.

Environmental pollution prevents the earth from restoring its typical ecosystem. Life on earth has been both created and destroyed by human forces. Human activity is a significant factor in the environment's destruction.

Our respiratory system is damaged daily because we take carbon and dust particles through our noses because of environmental pollution. These are brought on by a large number of industrial and manufacturing facilities through the burning of fossil fuels and carbon dioxide from vehicle combustion.

Any pollutant, including human and chemical factory waste, can easily contaminate water. We also utilise this water for drinking and cultivating crops. However, they also become polluted as a result of infection. Additionally, an animal eventually dies after consuming this same poisoned water.

Because of the containment of polluted soil and water, the crop or agricultural produce also gets toxic. Additionally, contaminated food affects our organs and overall health. These crops are laced with chemical substances from the beginning of their lives until harvest time.

Environmental pollution is also a result of climate change. Additionally, it impacts the ecosystem's biological and physical elements. Climate changes such as ozone depletion, greenhouse gases, and global warming are causes of environmental pollution. Moreover, they may have dangerous effects on future generations. The unpredictable extremes of cold and heat impact the earth's natural system.

Types of environmental pollution-

Noise Pollution - Noise pollution also called sound pollution happens when the level of noise in the environment gets too high. Noise pollution is caused by things like car horns, loudspeakers, music systems, and industrial activities. Noise pollution is harmful for our ears.

Soil Pollution - Soil pollution, also called land pollution, takes place when solid waste, non-biodegradable materials, chemicals, and other things are dumped on open land. Waste from cities and runoff from farms are the main things that pollute the soil. Due to soil pollution, we did not get good quality food.

Water Pollution - Waste from industries and sewage water is not treated well enough before being dumped into rivers and other water bodies, which results in water pollution. It is harmful to humans as well as aquatic life.

Air Pollution - Air pollution happens when particles and other harmful gases are released into the air and make it unhealthy. The air we breathe is polluted by the smoke that comes out of factory chimneys and automobiles. Air pollution affects our respiratory system.

Furthermore, several unstable climate changes, such as earthquakes, famine, smog, carbon particles, shallow rain or snow, thunderstorms, volcanic eruptions, and avalanches, are brought on by environmental pollution.

Most importantly, we must take action if we want to live on Earth. These steps will help safeguard our future and the future of the next generation. We have only one environment, sh; we take care of it. We should give proper knowledge to the new generation about the environment. Additionally, we should plant at least one tree in a month.

Disrupting marine life affects our food cycle and damages our ecosystem.

The contamination of soil due to the presence of chemicals or other harmful particles is called soil pollution. It, directly and indirectly, affects our lives. Excessive use of chemicals like pesticides and fertilisers for agricultural production, mining, improper waste disposal, and acid rain are some of the major causes of soil pollution. As a result of soil pollution, the soil loses its fertility and deteriorates natural vegetation. It adversely affects the organisms residing in the soil, degrades agricultural productivity, and even results in famine.

Noise pollution is caused by the excessive amounts of noise in our environment. Noise pollution is generally man-made, and it badly affects the natural balance of our ecosystem. Any sound which is over 85 decibels is harmful to human health. Due to globalisation and industrialisation, the level of noise pollution in our environment has increased drastically. Some of the main contributors to noise pollution are machinery used in industries, noise emitted by vehicles, sounds produced during construction work, noise during public festivals and social events, etc. Noise pollution has become a major issue for many developed and developing nations. As a consequence, people are facing sleeping disorders, hearing loss, hypertension, stress-related illnesses, etc.

Thermal pollution is caused by the sudden increase or decrease of the temperature of a natural body of water. Industrial machinery and power plants are the major contributors to thermal pollution. For the process of cooling machinery, water from nature is collected and used. But after this mechanism, the temperature of the water gets altered. By pumping back the water, the thermal balance of the natural source of water becomes affected and results in thermal pollution. It changes the oxygen level and destroys ecosystems.

The pollution caused by the release of radioactive substances into the environment during nuclear explosions, nuclear weapon production and decommissioning, mining of radioactive ores, and disposal of radioactive wastes are called radioactive pollution.

All this pollution has had a great impact on our lives. Many environmental catastrophes like global warming, acid rain, famine, drought, earthquakes, etc., are the returns given to us by earth for our greed. If we continue to pollute, then be ready to face the end.

Environmental pollution is one of the most troubling global issues. The types of pollution vary depending on the nature and the component on which the pollutant marks its effect.

Nitrogen oxide, sulphur oxide, mercury, CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon), particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds are some of the harmful pollutants that cause environmental pollution.

Every day we come across the term pollution. Then we blame the industries and government for it and release ourselves from all the responsibilities.

Are we sure that we don’t contribute to pollution? Well, no doubt industries play significant roles in pollution , but along with that, we are also responsible to some extent.

What does pollution mean? Pollution is the changes taking place in the natural environment, which has harmful effects.

The whole environment is polluted now like the air we breathe, the soil we use for cropping and the water we use, etc. Human activity is the main reason for this pollution and imbalance.

Some examples of the pollution we face are air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, soil pollution , radioactive pollution, plastic pollution, thermal pollution, etc.

Air pollution:

We can’t stop our breathing for a longer period. We need to air every second. But nowadays, the toxicity level in the air is increasing.

For example, let’s take India. India is facing more air pollution problems as compared to other countries. This country has 13 cities among the 20 most polluted cities in the world. Delhi (the capital city of India) stands in the first row for pollution.

Another city having the most pollution due to industrialization is Bengaluru and thus known as the Asthma city of India. According to IQAir’s report , the most polluted city in 2019 was Ghaziabad, Delhi, Followed by Hotan, China.

The next most polluted cities include Gujranwala (Pakistan), Faisalabad (Pakistan), Delhi (India), Noida (India), Gurugram (India), Raiwind (India), etc.

However, if we explain about the most polluted countries, then we will get; Bangladesh, Pakistan, Mongolia, Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, Bahrain, Nepal, Uzbekistan, Iraq, China, etc. in the top list.

To the date, the most polluted city in the world is Beijing, China, which has a maximum air quality index (AQI) of 176.

Air can be polluted by two major kinds of pollutants, i.e., indoor pollutants and outdoor pollutants.

Outdoor pollutants include toxic gases like nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulphur dioxide.

Particulate matter of industries and automobiles also comes under outdoor pollutants. Simultaneously, indoor pollutants include the toxic gases released from kitchen fuels and building materials like asbestos.

Air pollution comes under the top 10 killers of the world. It causes various fatal diseases like different respiratory diseases, hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, oxidative stress-induced various tissue damages along with cancer.

Before getting too late, we have to prevent this problem. Renewable energy should be considered as an alternative.

Electrostatic precipitation should be used in industries to diminish particulate matter. Strict rules for automobiles should be followed, and certain old automobiles should be banned in other places too, as in Delhi.

Water pollution:

71% of the planet earth is covered by water , but still, we are facing water scarcity problems. The reason is that the ocean covers 96.5% of water, which is not favourable for daily use.

The remaining usable water is getting polluted day by day. River, lake, and groundwater are depleting continuously due to more use as compared to rain.

The main reasons for water pollution are the release of many toxic materials into the river or other water resources.

Sewage and industrial effluents are releasing into the water without any pre-treatment. Removed water from agricultural fields is directly released to the river with all the pesticides and fertilizers.

In both rural and urban areas, most of the domestic litter are directly flushed into water.

An increase in the percentage of pollutants in water can decrease the oxygen percentage, which causes fatal effects on aquatic animals .

If industries follow the pre-treatment process, then a massive amount of water pollution can be blocked. Instead of draining the sewage directly into the water, we can treat the sewage in STP and can use it further in agriculture.

Noise pollution:

In urban areas, noise pollution is widespread, but this brings stress and anxiety to every person.

Sound up to 70db is not harmful to the ear, but the irritation depends upon the time duration of exposure.

Any machinery sound that creates mental illness in the human can be counted under noise pollution.

Humans can suffer from several disorders due to noise pollution such as hearing defects, malicious social behaviour, changes in spoken communication, sleep disturbances, cardiovascular disturbances, and, most importantly, disturbances in mental health. So, we should be aware not to create useless sounds.

Soil pollution:

Soil is the basic need for cropping and agriculture. So, soil pollution can directly affect agriculture , which may result in a scarcity of food. In developing countries, mining, industrial activities, improper disposal of waste, and mechanized agriculture are the main reasons for soil pollution.

To overcome this problem, phytoremediation should be used vastly. By planting trees, we can save soil both from pollution and soil erosion.

Many soil amendments are also used to immobilize the heavy metals and toxic substances in soil released from industries. Biochar is one of those soil amendments. Different kinds of bioremediation are also used to purify the soil.

Thermal pollution:

Every power plant needs to dispose of its heat waste. For their profit, they choose a cheap process to dispose of, i.e., water.

Then they directly release the hot water into the river or any other water source. This causes severe harm to the aquatic animals, which may bring an imbalance to the ecosystem.

By taking one step of cooling treatment, the industries can erase the thermal pollution to some extent. Those treated water can also be used domestically.

Radioactive pollution:

Till now, each pollution which I have explained is either biological pollution or chemical pollution and maybe physical pollution.

But our generation is also facing radioactive pollution. Radioactive pollutants have the capacity to release radiation like alpha, beta, and gamma, etc. These radiations cause mutation and may result in cancer or death.

As the population is increasing, so the electricity demand has also increased. To increase the production of electricity, atomic energy is used.

One gram of Uranium (a radioactive element) can provide the power of approximately 3 tons of coal.

But after the production of energy, the radioactive wastes remain active or functional for an extended period, and during this period, any contact of living organisms may cause harm to that individual.

Radioactive pollution can spread through the air, water, and soil also. Sometimes it can also enter the food chain.

So radioactive waste management is a mandatory step. The government should maintain it with proper legal restrictions.

Wastes should be disposed of in deep tunnels created underground, and the area should be prohibited for other uses. We cannot erase this pollution completely, but at least we can minimize its effect.

Plastic pollution:

Next is plastic pollution. Plastic pollution is the result of our comfort. Nowadays, every wrapper, cover, packet, and the carrier is made up of plastic.

We use plastic and then throw it. Plastic is non-degradable, so it gets deposited for hundreds of years.

Due to plastic accumulation, our ocean, soil, air, everything is getting polluted. Our food is also contaminated with micro and nano plastic particles.

We can’t even burn all the plastic wastes. It releases toxic gases like carbon dioxide when incinerated.

Many marine animals are getting affected due to the ocean polluted by plastics. Plastic accumulation on land affects agriculture.

The only way to control it is to use an alternative for plastic. Minimizing our plastic use can save this environment to some extent.

We also can use biodegradable wrappers. But what about the plastic wastes already deposited on earth? We need to regulate those wastes, and strict rules should be applied to using plastics.

A warm welcome to one & all present here. Today we are here to discuss the very burning topic of the decade that is pollution. According to a report by the World Health Organization, eleven out of twelve cities with the highest levels of particulate pollution are located in India. A study says 86% of the Indian water bodies are deemed critically polluted. Land pollution has resulted in a loss of around 25 billion tons of valuable soil each year.

As per the Global Burden of Disease Report by the World Health Organization, the prevalence of hearing loss was estimated to be 6.3% in India due to noise pollution. These are the few reports which have become often in today’s media & still we are not serious about the problem. Air Pollution in India has become a severe problem. As per a study, at least 140 million people in India breathe air that is ten times over the safe limit.

57% of the total air pollution are by the industries, 27% by vehicles, 17% by crop burning & around 5% by Diwali fireworks. India, as a country, is the third-largest greenhouse gas producer after China and the United States. There is a decrease in the Air Quality Index of all the major cities of the country. All these have resulted in an increase in several airborne diseases & the premature deaths in India.

Now the second type of pollution which has impacted is water pollution. The largest source of water pollution is untreated sewage. Other factors include agricultural runoff & unregulated small scale industries, solid wastes etc. These factors have resulted in contamination of both surface water & groundwater. Lack of toilets & defecation is also adding to the cause. Many rivers water has been declared unfit for domestic use due to high pollution with organic matter.

Not only humans but also the life in water is getting adversely affected by this.Now let us briefly discuss the land degradation. Soil Contamination or land pollution is caused by xenobiotic chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil. It is due to the intensive farming, deforestation, improper disposal of wastes & industrial activities. Except for these few major pollution’s, there are several other types of pollution’s like noise pollution, light pollution, plastic pollution which has been ignored since long.

Pollution cannot be seen or felt, but its effects are evident on the earth & the biodiversity. Global warming, increase in sea level, extinction of species, scarcity of drinking water, decrease in air quality, acid rain etc. are few major impacts which are posing a threat to the existence of human life on earth. To sum it up, all types of pollution’s are detrimental to the planet & comes with terrible consequences.

All of us must take steps to bring the changes in industries to the individual level. A joint effort by the government & the citizens will curb the situation from getting worse. So let us make a stand for our mother earth & listen to its pains to save it from the upcoming global calamity.

In 2020, the world’s attention turned to the COVID-19 pandemic. But even as we poured all of energy and resources into tackling it, many pointed to wider issues as contributing factors. Nature and biodiversity loss. Climate change. Pollution and waste. The three planetary crises. All of which are destroying the natural world and threatening our future.

Throughout all of this upheaval and debate, we stayed largely focused on the land. This was understandable, as in all likelihood it was the erosion of wild spaces that helped to create COVID-19. But we must not forget the vast blue world of the ocean – one of the last remaining wildernesses on the planet – that is such a huge asset in maintaining human and planetary health.

Marine ecosystem services make up over 60 per cent of the economic value of all life on earth. They support the livelihoods of over three billion people. They are an essential ally in the fight against climate change.

But the oceans are under attack from the same patterns of unsustainable consumption and production patterns that are causing such problems on land. They have become a dumping ground for all matter of pollution, from plastics to toxic chemicals.

Plastics represent the largest, most harmful and most persistent proportion of marine litter. The cumulative hazards and direct impacts of marine plastics already contribute to an estimated loss of USD 500 to USD 2,500 billion in marine ecosystem services per year.

The Arctic’s relative remoteness is no protection from plastic dumped elsewhere.

Carried by currents, waves and wind, plastic pollution is found on Arctic beaches, in the water column, in sea ice, sediments and in Arctic birds and mammals and science has revealed that nano plastics largely from washing of synthetic fibres, primarily in Europe and North America is now linked to the prevalence of microplastics found in 96 of 97 sea water samples across the Arctic, with acrylics, polyester and blended textiles releasing hundreds of thousands of nano fibres per wash. Chemicals like UV 328, which makes plastics more resistant to UV rays, have long-term and persistent toxic impacts, accumulating in organisms, and travelling long distances by air or water. It is now found in wildlife in the Arctic and the Pacific Ocean.

If we are to make peace with nature, we must transform our relationship with oceans and waters. And we cannot do this without tackling global marine litter and plastic pollution. Today, I would like to talk about five actions we can take to start making our oceans plastic-free.

First, we need to deal with COVID-19-related waste.

Masks, PPE, gloves and other disposal items are an essential part of the COVID-19 response. But this plastic waste threatens to negate strides made in the fight against disposable plastics, marine litter and microplastics – especially in countries with weak waste management infrastructure.

The numbers are unprecedented. Single-use face mask production in China soared to 116 million per day in February 2020 , about 12 times the usual quantity. Most of these masks go straight to landfill. Disposable masks are now washing up on shores from California to Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, increased take-away services and grocery deliveries during lockdowns also upped the levels of plastic use. The global plastic packaging market size is projected to grow from USD 909.2 billion in 2019 to 1,012.6 billion by 2021.

In addition, miscommunication on the safety of plastics in the context of the health crisis has rolled back progress in promoting policies and practices aimed at reducing plastic pollution. Governments should not weaken their laws on single-use plastic products, as we have seen in some places. It is not the material of the products that make them safer in the pandemic, but the use we make of them. Reusable products may be as safe as single-use ones.

Now that we are beginning to see how we might get on top of the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to also start thinking about how to avoid the single-use pandemic.

Second, we are seeing ambition and commitment on plastics. But we need to join up these efforts and fund them.

Regulation is one key tool that government can and must employ. In Africa, 34 of 54 nations have instituted bans of some kind on single-use plastic. As of January 1, amendments to the Basel Convention mean that international shipments of most plastic waste face new controls. Countries facing limitations in exporting plastic waste will have to innovate. Importing countries will now be able to accept only plastic waste that is easy to recycle. Further, under the Stockholm Convention, a series of actions have been set in motion that will see UV 328, a PoP chemical, eliminated or reduced .

In the wake of the United Nations Environment Assembly last week, the international community is looking to build on the work of the Ad hoc open-ended expert group on marine litter and microplastics. Let me here acknowledge the leadership by the Nordic Council of Ministers on their report, which outlines what a global agreement to tackle marine litter and plastic pollution might look like. UNEP also applauds the Regional Action Plan (RAP) on marine litter in the Arctic , which will be a valuable tool.

These efforts, and others like them, are great. But to turn the tide, national and regional efforts must be supported by global collaboration across public and private partnerships. Collaborations that can drive ambition, galvanize political will and, critically, unlock large-scale finance.

Third, plans must be based on science and circularity, and appropriate to local conditions.

There is a fundamental need to move to circularity and resource efficiency. We have the science and technology to prioritize and fast track innovative upstream and downstream interventions, in this regard. We should use it.

But we must be aware that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Different geographies and different plastic categories require different solutions.

High-income countries should prioritize decreasing overall plastic consumption, eliminating microplastic leakage, improving product design, and increasing recycling rates.
Middle/low-income countries should prioritize expanding formal collection, maximizing reduction and substitution, investing in sorting and recycling infrastructure, and cutting post-collection leakage.

Fourth, market conditions must immediately shift to change the game.

As with every environmental challenge, the private sector can drive change. We need innovation, cooperation and financing. Innovative models, however, require changes in market conditions that remove hurdles and provide the right economic incentives, coupled with regulatory approaches, to the most sustainable solutions. For instance, reusable packaging should not be considered a waste product to facilitate reverse logistics. The washing machine industry and the textile industry must innovate. Consumers must be engaged so they can make informed choices.

New plastic is not the answer. The value of recycled plastic is undercut by virgin plastic, which is cheap both because of the low cost of the subsidized fossil fuels used to make it and because its pricing doesn’t reflect the cost of cleaning it up. The imbalance of investment between production of new plastic production facilities and dealing with waste generation must be addressed. Reuters reports that investment over five years is USD 400 billion versus USD 1.5 billion respectively .

Transparent reporting and accountability must also be at the forefront of urgent interventions to reduce our reliance on virgin plastic polymers, promote recycled plastic and create reuse models that keep resources in our economies at a higher value for longer.

Fifth, we must take the chance we now have to protect our oceans.

The COVID-19 response has shown that society can mobilize to find science-based solutions and resources to meet seemingly insurmountable challenges. We must apply the same steely determination to tackling plastics and take advantage of the opportunities this decade affords.

Countries are working on recovery and stimulus packages that can drive a green transition by ending rewarding nature-positive innovation and sustainable consumption and production solutions. We have two UN Decades kicking off – the Decade on Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, both with huge relevance to the issue of marine litter and plastic pollution.

UNEP looks forward to building synergies and close links to the decades, and with member states and partners. By working through the Ocean Decade Alliance: to align research, solutions, investments, and build ocean literacy. By advancing the science-policy interface and digital transformation. By providing technical support for national and regional action plans on marine litter. By building membership of the Global Partnership on Marine Litter and its open-source digital platform. By building awareness and mobilizing action through the Clean Seas campaign and building beyond its current 62 signatory countries.

Ultimately, we will pay the price for our throw-away plastics habit. So we must band together – across government, private sector, civil society and citizenry – to move away from unsustainable production and consumption patterns for people and planet.

2021 can be the year that we put the world on the path to achieving the SDGs, underpinned by a sustainable blue economy.

We can create a clean ocean where sources of pollution are identified and reduced or removed. A healthy and resilient ocean, where marine ecosystems are understood, protected, restored and managed. A productive ocean, supporting sustainable food supply and a sustainable ocean economy. An ocean that we treat with the respect it deserves.

As we all know that water is what gives us life and no life would be imaginable on earth without it. This is the reason why it is said that every single drop of water matters. We use water every single day in almost all our household chores and for other commercial purposes as well. We need water for drinking, washing, cooking, fishing, irrigation, etc.

However, we still waste this important resource and do not make a wise use of it. Not only do we use water recklessly and misuse it, but also cause water pollution. Garbage, industrial waste and other remnants of used articles are being dumped in oceans and rivers resulting in the contamination of water. Other toxic chemicals that run out of factories and pesticides used during agricultural practices also get discharged in water; thereby causing further pollution in water.

This doesn’t stop here; the poor system of water supply and contact of the water supply line with sewage further degrade the quality of water and make it unfit for drinking. Contaminated water poses a serious threat to the existence of human life, animals and fish. The poor and underdeveloped countries are in fact facing huge problems of water scarcity and water pollution as there is no suitable waste disposal system and poor water supply and treatment system.

They dump garbage and dispose waste products straight into the lakes and rivers. Nearly one-third population in the world does not have a resort to safe drinking water. It therefore gives rise to such water-borne diseases as diarrhea. This disease is quite rampant in underdeveloped countries or poor countries where the ratio of poor people is significantly high.

Developed countries seldom suffer from the problem of water pollution. Water pollution in such countries is caused mainly due to the unwarranted use of the pesticides in order to protect agricultural harvest. The problem of water pollution in such countries does not arise out of the poor garbage management system like that of in the underdeveloped countries where disposal and water treatment cost is usually unaffordable.

But whether it’s the developed countries or the underdeveloped ones – every nation is grappling with the situation of water crisis more or less. Strict measures should be implemented where dumping of garbage or any other toxic waste is prohibited. In addition to this, the government should adopt water conservation techniques and these techniques should be imparted to people so that misuse of water can be avoided. This is all from my side!

As you all know that our society is facing serious water crisis, it therefore calls for an immediate solution. We all will have to collectively work to be able to combat the situation in this hot climate. My other intention behind calling everyone here, especially children is to make them realize how much important water is for our survival and we should strictly avoid its misuse.

It won’t be an exaggeration to say that water is undoubtedly the “Elixir of Life”. Isn’t it? The word ‘elixir’ means a magic liquid, which is believed to cure illness or give people immortal youth. Life originated and grew in water and life is simply unimaginable without it. Water has a neutral pH value and is considered a perfect triological solvent. Water is colorless, tasteless and odorless in its pure form.

Water pollution is caused due to the contamination, i.e. discharge of such pollutants as domestic, industrial, chemical, biological, physical and so on. Water pollution involves physical or chemical change in its property that has adverse effect on the health of the human beings, including other organisms. Water pollution in the present times has become a cause of global concern. The level of pollution differs from one country to the other and also one region to the other. In developing countries, a number of epidemics are connected with contaminated water.

Based on the type or source of contaminant, water pollution can be of several types, such as:

Bacterial Pollution

The water gets polluted either through man-made activities or natural causes.

I am sure children, you must have studied all this in your course work and here I’m iterating the same facts. Now let’s understand some of the man-made or natural causes of water pollution:

Domestic Waste and Sewage Run Off

Domestic waste usually contains organic wastes like food leftovers, domestic garbage, cloth, paper, toiletries and run off of human excreta because of bathing, house-hold cleaning, food processing and laundering. Did you know that nearly 75 percent of water pollution is caused due to domestic and sewage wastes? Since domestic sewage usually contains organic wastes, when these are discharged in water bodies, they absorb a lot of oxygen and the amount of oxygen that go into it is defined as B.O.D., i.e. Biological Oxygen Demand.

Pesticides are synthetic compounds required for pest control. The excess of the agricultural fields when discharged in water leads to pesticide pollution of various water bodies, such as streams, rivers and lakes. There are a few industrial pesticides that also enter inland waters. These pesticides have an adverse effect on a wide range of aquatic organisms, which include fishes and insects.

Many such chemical compounds are however very much stable. A few of them disintegrate partially in order to form several toxic compounds. Pesticides that are used to kill harmful insects are either organic phosphorus compounds (Malathion) or chlorinated hydrocarbons (Endrin, DDT and aldrin). These are stable and lead to a buildup in the tissues of aquatic chemicals. Further accumulation takes place in animals when the higher we go in trophic levels.

Industrial Effluents and Discharge

Industries are also responsible for producing several organic and inorganic wastes, which eventually penetrate into the water bodies and pollute it. When the aquatic environment becomes toxic, it not only affects the population of the fish, but also forms a buildup at the bottom of these water bodies and enters into the bodies of the water animals. Resistant objects, such as metals, cans, tires, plastic wares and polythene further accumulate in water bodies and pollute them.

Hence, there are several causes of water pollution which when are recognized and put under constant checks can help us overcome the problem of water pollution.

I – Sukant Sharma – warmly welcome all the members of our ABC Society. As you all know this is the Day 2 of our speech giving ceremony and our Save Water Campaign is successfully making its mark. People are becoming more and more aware and are trying to cut down on the usage of water so that this precious resource could be saved as much as possible. To my surprise, in fact a greater level of maturity is being observed in our children who are not wasting water and are using it very wisely.

However, we not only will have to combat the situation of water crisis, but also need to control pollution of water. As I was discussing in my last speech the causes of water pollution, I would like to continue with the same and here is some of the remaining water polluting agents:

Fertilizers and Detergent

The chemical fertilizers are usually compounds of nitrogen, phosphates and potash. These are non-biodegradable in nature and when come in contact with water bodies due to surface sun off pose a great threat to the aquatic life.

The washing articles are usually known as detergents. They are made up of complex phosphates, which disintegrate into phosphates and other chemicals. The phosphates when absorbed by aquatic plants naturally increase the concentration of phosphorus in sewage effluents. Fishes and invertebrates become greatly affected by the detergents.

Water is utilized during various industrial processes for cooling and this resultant warmed water is often being discharged into lakes and streams. Oil or coal based generators and atomic energy plants release humongous amount of waste heat which is carried away in the form of hot water and lead to thermal pollution.

Toxic Metals

Metallurgical laboratories and mining operations are responsible for the discharge of several heavy metals like copper, zinc, mercury, lead, chromium, arsenic, etc. Mercuric compounds present in water are transformed into dimethyl and monomethyl mercury with the help of methane which is released from anaerotric breakdown of organic wastes.

Both are non-degradable and highly toxic that can cause chromosomal damage and harmful effect on kidney, liver and gills of the fishes. Toxic metals that cause air pollution, like Nickel, Cadmium and Lead may also penetrate deep down in water bodies and affect the lives of aquatic animals.

Suspended Solids

These are water pollutants in a physical form. For instance, silt is fine sediment that go into the rivers in many ways along with the surface run off. Silt augments the turbidity of water, which harms the yielding efficiency of the aquatic environment and the growth of the aquatic animals.

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (B.O.D.)

The organic wastes are a part of water bodies that utilize dissolved oxygen. BOD means the amount of oxygen required for biochemical oxidation by microorganisms in unit volume of water. The oxygen demand is directly connected with the increased input of organic wastes. So BOD is a unit to measure oxygen for the biochemical degradation of organic elements present in water. The aerobic decomposers perform the task. The value of BOD is directly connected with the sum total of oxidized organic matter. BOD therefore is used as a measurement to assess the level of water pollution.

So these five are another factors contributing to water pollution and we should have the requisite knowledge of these factors to be able to keep them under control. With this, I rest my speech.

I – Rajat Kapoor, one of the committee members of Save Water, Save Earth Foundation – welcome you all to the 11 th annual meeting. It is good to see you all after a long time; I have been out of the country for some official reasons and hence couldn’t attend the preceding two meetings.

Now that I am here in my own country and to my dismay I have come across a serious situation of water crisis. On the top of this, I observe people misusing this precious resource. This should be strictly prohibited by our government and people seen wasting water should be heavily fined. In fact, the government should remain agile about such human agencies that cause water pollution and contaminate the quality of water. Water pollution is one of the alarming issues in the present times that the countries in the world are grappling with.

Water Pollution could be termed as the discharge of toxic substances into our water bodies – lakes, estuaries, rivers, streams and oceans to the point where the elements interfere with the favorable usage of water or with the natural working of ecosystems. Besides the discharge of substances, such as microorganisms or chemicals, water pollution also consists of the release of energy in the form of heat, radioactivity into water bodies.

Water bodies gets polluted by a wide range of substances, such as

Plant nutrients;
Radioactive Substances;
Pathogenic Microorganisms;
Petroleum (oil);
Sediments putrescible organic waste;
Toxic chemicals

It’s time when some preventive measures need to be taken through suitable infrastructure as well as management plans. The infrastructure consists of wastewater treatment plans. Industrial wastewater treatment and sewage treatment plants are often required to preserve water channels from untreated wastewater. If we happen to control the process of erosion from construction sites and adopt agricultural wastewater treatment, it can help prevent water pollution.

Nature-based solutions can also help overcome water pollution. It is important to keep a check on the urban runoff, which reduces the quantity and speed of flow. There are excellent management practices adopted for water pollution which consist of such approaches as reducing the water quantity and improving the quality of water.

So if problem is there; solution is also definitely there. It’s just that we need to identify the problem, assess the nature of problem, its source and origin and then work upon it accordingly.

Drinking this water may lead to various stomach problems and infections.

River and lake water has to go through a process of filtration before they are delivered to the houses. After that, they once again go through an advanced process of filtration in the households before making them completely drinkable.

But with the growing population and industries, the amount of drinking water in our country is reducing. Most of the seas, rivers, and small water bodies are highly polluted by various contaminants from the industry wastes thus, leading to water pollution. The release of these wastes leads to a high amount of contamination and heavy metal accumulation in the water bodies. Thereafter, making them undrinkable. This has not only affected the lives of human beings but has also greatly impacted marine life due to the insufficient oxygen supply. Many people fall sick due to the lack of proper drinking water and suffer stomach infections due to the presence of these contaminants. Thus, it is our responsibility to stop the dispersal of wastes into the water bodies and start conserving water for the survival of human beings. This water, of course, should be free from any kinds of pollutants.

Some of the techniques that must be helpful in conserving water are rainwater harvesting, planting of more trees to increase the water level in soil and stopping unnecessary wastage of water. Lastly, I would like to say that water is the main source of life on this planet and thus, every drop of water must be used in a proper manner.

It is required to grow crops and for proper irrigation so that there is a good yield of crops. The absence of water can lead to droughts and famines leading to hunger. In addition, water is a source of transportation too. Furthermore, water is an important source of electricity. We get hydroelectric power from water dams which we use for cooking, bathing, and drinking. Thus, water has many significant roles in our life.

2. What is water conservation?

Conservation of water can be defined as the strategies, activities, and policies that are required to maintain the natural resources of water bodies sustainably. It also means to protect the hydrosphere and have a sustainable goal where human demands are met without harming the water bodies. Excessive use of water can lead to water scarcity. Urbanization and population growth have a major impact on water usage. The factors like climate change have left a negative impact on the water bodies which is why it has become more important for us to conserve water. Many countries have implemented laws and policies that are aimed at the conservation of water and have been successful. The main goal of water conservation is to reduce water loss, less usage of water resources, and less wastage of water.

3. What are the sources of water?

Sources of water can be defined as the source or places from where we get water from. These are namely the surface water, groundwater, river flow, and frozen water like from glaciers. These are the natural sources that occur without any human interventions. The other source is the artificial source. Here, fresh water is obtained from the treated wastewater or cleaned water after primary/secondary treatment and desalinated seawater. The water is used in households, agriculture, industries, and many other places.

4. What is water pollution?

Pollution of water can be defined as the release of unwanted substances into the groundwater or other water bodies like streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. It becomes very harmful to the water bodies and the animals dwelling there. This harms the natural and normal functioning of the water ecosystems and disrupts everything thus, creating a threat to the ecosystem. The substances can be chemicals or microbes which can cause pollution that can lead to radioactivity or heat in the water bodies. One of the major causes of pollution is due to the disposal of industrial wastes directly into the oceans and also, dumping waste and sewage there.

5. What are the harmful effects of dams?

Dams are created by causing deforestation at a large scale which causes habitat destruction and destroys the homes of many animals and even makes the people relocate somewhere else. Large dams cause disruptions to the natural flow of the river which then hinders the lives of the fishes and other animals that dwell in the water bodies. This can lead to the extinction of fishes and other aquatic species, the disappearance of many birds in the floodplains, huge forest loss, soil erosion, and erosion of coastal deltas.

Water is the most important natural resource for life. Human being needs water not only for drinking but also for cooking, washing, irrigation, fishing etc. People have been abusing and misusing water since long. Industrial wastes, garbage and other remains of used commodities have been getting dumped in rivers and oceans causing contamination of water. It is also contaminated of toxic chemicals discharged from factories, pesticides used in agriculture and so on.

Due to the poor water supply system, contact of sewage with the water supply line contaminates water used for drinking. Contaminated water has become a serious threat to human beings, fish and the animals. The poor and less developed countries are facing greater problem of water pollution as they have dilapidated water treatment and supply system and also lack in proper waste disposal system.

They dispose waste products and garbage straight away in their rivers and lakes. About one-third population of the world does not have access to safe water. A very common water-borne disease is diarrhoea, which is caused by contaminated water. It is very common in poor countries and in the segment of poor people of less developed countries.

Developed countries are almost free from the problem of water pollution. Pollution of water in those countries is mainly due to the excessive use of pesticides to protect agricultural crops. Water pollution in these countries is not due to the lack of management of garbage as in the less developed countries for whom its disposal and treatment is normally unaffordable.

However, the developed countries are not confronted with the problem of water contamination as much as the poor ones because they have sufficient resources and efficient technology for treatment and recycling of sewage, garbage and domestic waste.

A team of researchers at Britain’s Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and experts from World Water Council introduced a new index of water-rich and water-poor countries. Five different criteria were used to construct the index: resource, access, use, capacity and environment.

This water index is not congruent with the development index. For example, the US – one of the most developed countries – ranks 33rd on the water index. Experts calculate that 20 per cent of world population in 30 countries faced water shortage in 2000 which would climb to 30 per cent in a total of 50 countries by 2025.

The Earth Summit held in Johannesburg in September 2002, estimated that by 2015, half of the population of world will be without access to clean water and sanitation. Out of a total of 147 countries, the index ranks Finland at top, followed by Canada, Iceland, Norway, Guyana, Surinam, Austria, Ireland, Sweden and Switzerland and from bottom up are Haiti, Niger, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Malawi, Djibouti, Chad, Benin, Rwanda and Burundi.
