How to conduct social media research with MAXQDA?

Social Media has drastically changed the way we communicate. Nowadays it’s a lot easier for an individual to communicate with a large audience or with strangers living on the other side of the planet, and to find and communicate with others researching similar topics. Companies, organizations, and political parties can target a specific group of people for their campaign and receive immediate feedback. So, it’s not a surprise that online communication has become more prevalent, which in turn has increased the significance of social media platforms.

Researchers and marketers alike benefit from the wealth of data available on social media platforms, gaining insights into the public’s opinions, communication patterns, and more. Social media research describes the process of collecting and analyzing social media data, such as posts, comments, and likes in order to understand communication patterns, public opinions, and trends.

Who conducts social media research?

Compared to other data collection instruments, such as focus group discussions, collecting social media data is less resource-intensive as the data is easily accessible. However, researchers are confronted with extensive data when performing social media research. Depending on the topic thousands and thousands of posts and comments exist. Social media research: Use the MAXQDA

Step 1: Develop a research design for social media research

As for any other research project, we advise you to develop a research design before starting your social media research. A research design serves as a structured plan outlining how a researcher intends to answer a specific research question. Determine the specific social media data you wish to analyze and define the precise methodology for your analysis. Among other considerations, ask yourself which social media platform(s) you want to consider, whether there is a time frame of interest; and if you plan to exclusively focus on social media posts containing particular hashtags or keywords. You must address these questions to develop a well-designed study that ensures reliable and valid results. We recommend reading our Research Design guide if you need clarification on what a research design entails.

Please note that the order of the steps presented here is flexible and depends on your research design and research question.

Step 2: Collect & import your social media data

With MAXQDA, you have several options for importing your social media data. On the one side, MAXQDA provides specialized import tools for YouTube comments and specialized analysis tools for YouTube data and X (formerly known as Twitter) data. Suppose you want to import and analyze data from a different social media platform. Then, you can either use MAXQDA’s WebCollector to collect and import entire webpages into MAXQDA or another social media data collection service, saving the data in a MAXQDA-compatible format, like an Excel file. There are several online tools for exporting social media data.

You can use MAXQDA’s WebCollector – a free Chrome Browser extension – to export entire websites in a format that can be imported into MAXQDA. The free MAXQDA WebCollector is availale on the Chrome WebStore.

After installing the extension, export the webpage from your social media platform of interest. In the case of X (formerly known as Twitter) you have two options. You can either export only top-level posts or a specific top-level post, including all its replies. Search for a hashtag and export the search results, i.e., all posts containing this hashtag, by opening the WebCollector extension and clicking “Collect.” If you want, you can add notes in the Document Memo section, such as the time frame or other parameters of your search. Upon import into MAXQDA, these notes will be imported as a Document Memo.

In the case you are specifically interested in specific posts, e.g., posts from a certain account or posts with a lot of replies, click on the post so that the original post and all comments are displayed. Now, export the website with MAXQDA’s WebCollector to compile the original posts, including all replies.

Step 3: Social media research data preparation

Before starting the actual analysis, you might want to clean and organize your data in a meaningful way. For example, you could remove irrelevant and duplicate posts. You could also organize your data in document groups, e.g., based on the social media platform, a time range, a hashtag, or whatever category is important to your social media research.

When following an inductive approach, you might want to get a basic understanding of the collected social media data and base your codes on the actual content. Automatically analyze the public’s sentiment

Often, people performing social media research are not interested in every single opinion of every single individual but in the general sentiment towards a topic, politician, issue, or product. With MAXQDA, you can perform a sentiment analysis in no time. To perform a sentiment analysis, open the Smart Coding Tool in the Codes tab. Since the Smart Coding tool works on the level of coded segments, you need to dummy-code your data prior to the sentiment analysis. When importing YouTube comments, comments and replies are automatically coded. However, when importing data through other means, such as via the WebCollector, you may want to manually create the codes ‘post’ and ‘reply’ to quickly code your data. Subsequently, you can perform automatic sentiment analysis by clicking on the button “Analyze Sentiments.” To autocode your social media data with the respective sentiment, click “Autocode Segments with Sentiment.” Then, MAXQDA creates the code ‘Sentiment’ with the identified sentiments as subcodes. By looking at the code frequencies you get a first impression of the general public sentiment.

Subsequently, you can use MAXQDA’s retrieval function to, e.g., focus your social media research on negative posts. To do so, simply activate the documents of interest and the code ‘Sentiment’ > ‘Negative’. All text segments coded with this code will be displayed in the Retrieved Segments window. If you plan to create subcodes, for example to divide the negative sentiment into reasons why people dislike your product, you can again use the Smart Coding tool. Select the code ‘Negative’ from the Code tree on the left site and MAXQDA will display only the segments with a negative sentiment to which you can apply additional codes.

Rather than going through the ‘Negative’ posts individually, you can again use the power of artificial intelligence to create a summary of the coded segments. To do so, right-click the code ‘Negative’ in the Codes window and select AI Assist > Summarize coded segments. Similarly, to the Summarize Document feature, AI Assist will add the summary in a memo.

Step 5: Categorize your social media research data

In many qualitative research projects, including social media research, coding/categorizing your data is an important step. When working inductively, the AI-generated summaries might provide initial ideas for codes. When working deductively, you probably already have codes in mind. With MAXQDA you can easily create codes, assign code colors, and define rules for coding in the New Code window regardless of your approach. Furthermore, you can organize your codes hierarchically. Especially useful for big data is MAXQDA’s Text Search & Autocode feature, which is located in the Analysis tab. This feature allows you to search for keywords and automatically code them. You can also use logical operators, such as OR, to search for a list of keywords simultaneously e.g., to find all synonyms of a word with just one search. If you are interested in certain concepts, you can create dictionaries of keywords defining the concept and search for multiple concepts at once (search for the whole dictionary). To do so, you first need to create a dictionary. Therefore, go to the MAXDictio tab and select Dictionaries.

In the coding of qualitative data, researchers often start with broad codes, intending to refine them in a later step of the social media research. Alongside the Smart Coding Tool, which is ideal for code refinement, as explained earlier, AI Assist’s “Suggest Subcodes” is another valuable tool. You can use this feature to to get subcode suggestions. Simply, right-click on a code and select AI Assist > Subcode Suggestions.

Step 6: Aggregate & present your results

A crucial step involves consolidating your social media research results into a format that is easily understandable for others. For example, charts and visualisations can aggregate huge amount of data in an easily comprehensible graph that answers your research question. Of course, MAXQDA has integrated visualisation and charting tools. Some tools that might be especially useful for presenting social media data are presented in the following sections.

Visualize trends

If your social media research analyzes a topic over time, the Trends function might also interest you. Currently, MAXQDA offers Word Trends, Code Trends, and Dictionary Categories Trends. To explore how code or word frequencies change across time, you should store your social media data in distinct documents – one document per time range. While Word Trends can be used even when the data is not coded, Code Trends requires coded data. No matter whether you are using Code or Word trends, select Trends for multiple documents. Then, select the documents (and codes) of interest and MAXQDA will visualize them. For example, you can use the Code Trends tool on auto-generated sentiment codes to investigate how sentiments towards a topic change over time.

Aside from analyzing trends across time, you can also use MAXQDA’s Trends tool to compare reactions, e.g., between different social media plattforms. To do this, you need to organize your data as follows: create a separate document for each social media plattform containing all posts of interest. Next, choose your preferred Trends tool and again choose trends for multiple documents. In case you are interested in how a discussion evolves in a comment section, given that the data is stored in one document, you can opt for the single document trends feature. MAXQDA splits the document in 10 segments, allowing you to see how word/code frequencies look across them.

The Impact of Social Media on the Mental Health of Adolescents and Young Adults: A Systematic Review

Adolescents increasingly find it difficult to picture their lives without social media. Practitioners need to be able to assess risk, and social media may be a new component to consider. Although there is limited empirical evidence to support the claim, the perception of the link between social media and mental health is heavily influenced by teenage and professional perspectives. Privacy concerns, cyberbullying, and bad effects on schooling and mental health are all risks associated with this population's usage of social media. However, ethical social media use can expand opportunities for connection and conversation, as well as boost self-esteem, promote health, and gain access to critical medical information. Despite mounting evidence of social media's negative effects on adolescent mental health, there is still a scarcity of empirical research on how teens comprehend social media, particularly as a body of wisdom, or how they might employ wider modern media discourses to express themselves. Youth use cell phones and other forms of media in large numbers, resulting in chronic sleep loss, which has a negative influence on cognitive ability, school performance, and socio-emotional functioning. According to data from several cross-sectional, longitudinal, and empirical research, smartphone and social media use among teenagers relates to an increase in mental distress, self-harming behaviors, and suicidality. Clinicians can work with young people and their families to reduce the hazards of social media and smartphone usage by using open, nonjudgmental, and developmentally appropriate tactics, including education and practical problem-solving.

Introduction and background

Humans are naturally social species that depend on the companionship of others to thrive in life. Thus, while being socially linked with others helps alleviate stress, worry, and melancholy, a lack of social connection can pose major threats to one's mental health [ 1 ]. Over the past 10 years, the rapid emergence of social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others has led to some significant changes in how people connect and communicate (Table 1 ). Over one billion people are currently active users of Facebook, the largest social networking website, and it is anticipated that this number will grow significantly over time, especially in developing countries. Facebook is used for both personal and professional interaction, and its deployment has had a number of positive effects on connectivity, idea sharing, and online learning [ 2 ]. Furthermore, the number of social media users globally in 2019 was 3.484 billion, a 9% increase year on year [ 3 ].

Mental health is represented as a state of well-being in which individuals recognize their potential, successfully navigate daily challenges, perform effectively at work, and make a substantial difference in the lives of others [ 4 ]. There is currently debate over the benefits and drawbacks of social media on mental health [ 5 ]. Social networking is an important part of safeguarding our mental health. Mental health, health behavior, physical health, and mortality risk are all affected by the quantity and quality of social contacts [ 5 ].

Social media use and mental health may be related, and the displaced behavior theory could assist in clarifying why. The displaced behavior hypothesis is a psychology theory that suggests people have limited self-control and, when confronted with a challenging or stressful situation, may engage in behaviors that bring instant gratification but are not in accordance with their long-term objectives [ 6 ]. In addition, when people are unable to deal with stress in a healthy way, they may act out in ways that temporarily make them feel better but ultimately harm their long-term goals and wellness [ 7 , 8 ]. In the 1990s, social psychologist Roy Baumeister initially suggested the displaced behavior theory [ 9 ]. Baumeister suggested that self-control is a limited resource that can be drained over time and that when self-control resources are low, people are more likely to engage in impulsive or self-destructive conduct [ 9 ]. This can lead to a cycle of bad behaviors and outcomes, as individuals may engage in behaviors that bring short respite but eventually add to their stress and difficulties [ 9 ]. According to the hypothetical terms, those who participate in sedentary behaviors, including social media, engage in fewer opportunities for in-person social interaction, both of which have been demonstrated to be protective against mental illnesses [ 10 ]. Social theories, on the other hand, discovered that social media use influences mental health by affecting how people interpret, maintain, and interact with their social network [ 4 ].

Numerous studies on social media's effects have been conducted, and it has been proposed that prolonged use of social media sites like Facebook may be linked to negative manifestations and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress [ 11 ]. A distinct and important time in a person's life is adolescence. Additionally, risk factors such as family issues, bullying, and social isolation are readily available at this period, and it is crucial to preserve social and emotional growth. The growth of digital technology has affected numerous areas of adolescent lives. Nowadays, teenagers' use of social media is one of their most apparent characteristics. Being socially connected with other people is a typical phenomenon, whether at home, school, or a social gathering, and adolescents are constantly in touch with their classmates via social media accounts. Adolescents are drawn to social networking sites because they allow them to publish pictures, images, and videos on their platforms. It also allows teens to establish friends, discuss ideas, discover new interests, and try out new kinds of self-expression. Users of these platforms can freely like and comment on posts as well as share them without any restrictions. Teenagers now frequently post insulting remarks on social media platforms. Adolescents frequently engage in trolling for amusement without recognizing the potentially harmful consequences. Trolling on these platforms focuses on body shaming, individual abilities, language, and lifestyle, among other things. The effects that result from trolling might cause anxiety, depressive symptoms, stress, feelings of isolation, and suicidal thoughts. The authors explain the influence of social media on teenage well-being through a review of existing literature and provide intervention and preventative measures at the individual, family, and community levels [ 12 ].

Although there is a "generally correlated" link between teen social media use and depression, certain outcomes have been inconsistent (such as the association between time spent on social media and mental health issues), and the data quality is frequently poor [ 13 ]. Browsing social media could increase your risk of self-harm, loneliness, and empathy loss, according to a number of research studies. Other studies either concluded that there is no harm or that some people, such as those who are socially isolated or marginalized, may benefit from using social media [ 10 ]. Because of the rapid expansion of the technological landscape in recent years, social media has become increasingly important in the lives of young people. Social networking has created both enormous new challenges and interesting new opportunities. Research is beginning to indicate how specific social media interactions may impair young people's mental health [ 14 ]. Teenagers could communicate with one another on social media platforms, as well as produce, like, and share content. In most cases, these individuals are categorized as active users. On the other hand, teens can also use social media in a passive manner by "lurking" and focusing entirely on the content that is posted by others. The difference between active and passive social media usage is sometimes criticized as a false dichotomy because it does not necessarily reveal whether a certain activity is goal-oriented or indicative of procrastination [ 15 ]. However, the text provides no justification for why this distinction is wrong [ 16 ]. For instance, one definition of procrastination is engaging in conversation with other people to put off working on a task that is more important. The goal of seeing the information created by other people, as opposed to participating with those same individuals, may be to keep up with the lives of friends. One of the most important distinctions that can be made between the various sorts is whether the usage is social. When it comes to understanding and evaluating all these different applications of digital technology, there are a lot of obstacles to overcome. Combining all digital acts into a single predictor of pleasure would, from both a philosophical and an empirical one, invariably results in a reduction in accuracy [ 17 ].

Methodology

This systematic review was carried out and reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement and standard practices in the field. The purpose of this study was to identify studies on the influence of technology, primarily social media, on the psychosocial functioning, health, and well-being of adolescents and young adults.

The MEDLINE bibliographical database, PubMed, Google Scholar, CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), and Scopus were searched between 1 January 2000 and 30 May 2023. Social media AND mental health AND adolescents AND young adults were included in the search strategy (impact or relation or effect or influence).

Two researchers (AK and AR) separately conducted a literature search utilizing the search method and evaluated the inclusion eligibility of the discovered papers based on their titles and abstracts. Then, the full texts of possibly admissible publications were retrieved and evaluated for inclusion. Disagreements among the researchers were resolved by debate and consensus.

The researchers included studies that examined the impact of technology, primarily social media, on the psychosocial functioning, health, and well-being of adolescents and young adults. We only considered English publications, reviews, longitudinal surveys, and cross-sectional studies. We excluded studies that were not written in English, were not comparative, were case reports, did not report the results of interest, or did not list the authors' names. We also found additional articles by looking at the reference lists of the retrieved articles.

Using a uniform form, the two researchers (AK and AA) extracted the data individually and independently. The extracted data include the author, publication year, study design, sample size and age range, outcome measures, and the most important findings or conclusions.

A narrative synthesis of the findings was used to analyze the data, which required summarizing and presenting the results of the included research in a logical and intelligible manner. Each study's key findings or conclusions were summarized in a table.

Study Selection

A thorough search of electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library, was done from 1 January 2000 to 20 May 2023. Initial research revealed 326 potentially relevant studies. After deleting duplicates and screening titles and abstracts, the eligibility of 34 full-text publications was evaluated. A total of 23 papers were removed for a variety of reasons, including non-comparative studies, case reports, and studies that did not report results of interest (Figure ​ (Figure1 1 ).

This systematic review identified 11 studies that examined the connection between social media use and depression symptoms in children and adolescents. The research demonstrated a modest but statistically significant association between social media use and depression symptoms. However, this relationship's causality is unclear, and additional study is required to construct explanatory models and hypotheses for inferential studies [ 18 ].

Additional research studied the effects of technology on the psychosocial functioning, health, and well-being of adolescents and young adults. Higher levels of social media usage were connected with worse mental health outcomes [ 19 ], and higher levels of social media use were associated with an increased risk of internalizing and externalizing difficulties among adolescents, especially females [ 20 ]. The use of social media was also connected with body image problems and disordered eating, especially among young women [ 21 ], and social media may be a risk factor for alcohol consumption and associated consequences among adolescents and young adults [ 22 ].

It was discovered that cyberbullying victimization is connected with poorer mental health outcomes in teenagers, including an increased risk of sadness and anxiety [ 23 ]. The use of social media was also connected with more depressive symptoms and excessive reassurance-seeking, but also with greater popularity and perceived social support [ 24 ], as well as appearance comparisons and body image worries, especially among young women [ 25 ]. Children and adolescents' bedtime media device use was substantially related to inadequate sleep quantity, poor sleep quality, and excessive daytime drowsiness [ 26 ].

Online friends can be a significant source of social support, but in-person social support appears to provide greater protection against persecution [ 27 ]. Does Social Media Have a Positive or Negative Impact on Adolescents and Young Adults?

Adults frequently blame the media for the problems that younger generations face, conceptually bundling different behaviors and patterns of use under a single term when it comes to using media to increase acceptance or a feeling of community [ 29 , 30 ]. The effects of social media on mental health are complex, as different goals are served by different behaviors and different outcomes are produced by distinct patterns of use [ 31 ]. The numerous ways that people use digital technology are often disregarded by policymakers and the general public, as they are seen as "generic activities" that do not have any specific impact [ 32 ]. Given this, it is crucial to acknowledge the complex nature of the effects that digital technology has on adolescents' mental health [ 19 ]. This empirical uncertainty is made worse by the fact that there are not many documented metrics of how technology is used. Self-reports are the most commonly used method for measuring technology use, but they can be prone to inaccuracy. This is because self-reports are based on people's own perceptions of their behavior, and these perceptions can be inaccurate [ 33 ]. At best, there is simply a weak correlation between self-reported smartphone usage patterns and levels that have been objectively verified [ 34 , 35 ].

When all different kinds of technological use are lumped together into a single behavioral category, not only does the measurement of that category contribute to a loss of precision, but the category also contributes to a loss of precision. To obtain precision, we need to investigate the repercussions of a wide variety of applications, ideally guided by the findings of scientific research [ 36 ]. The findings of this research have frequently been difficult to interpret, with many of them suggesting that using social media may have a somewhat negative but significantly damaging impact on one's mental health [ 36 ]. There is a growing corpus of research that is attempting to provide a more in-depth understanding of the elements that influence the development of mental health, social interaction, and emotional growth in adolescents [ 20 ].

It is challenging to provide a succinct explanation of the effects that social media has on young people because it makes use of a range of different digital approaches [ 37 , 38 ]. To utilize and respond to social media in either an adaptive or maladaptive manner, it is crucial to first have a solid understanding of personal qualities that some children may be more likely to exhibit than others [ 39 ]. In addition to this, the specific behaviors or experiences on social media that put teenagers in danger need to be recognized.

When a previous study particularly questioned teenagers in the United States, the authors found that 31% of them believe the consequences are predominantly good, 45% believe they are neither positive nor harmful, and 24% believe they are unfavorable [ 21 ]. Teens who considered social media beneficial reported that they were able to interact with friends, learn new things, and meet individuals who shared similar interests because of it. Social media is said to enhance the possibility of (i) bullying, (ii) ignoring face-to-face contact, and (iii) obtaining incorrect beliefs about the lives of other people, according to those who believe the ramifications are serious [ 21 ]. In addition, there is the possibility of avoiding depression and suicide by recognizing the warning signs and making use of the information [ 40 ]. A common topic that comes up in this area of research is the connection that should be made between traditional risks and those that can be encountered online. The concept that the digital age and its effects are too sophisticated, rapidly shifting, or nuanced for us to fully comprehend or properly shepherd young people through is being questioned, which challenges the traditional narrative that is sent to parents [ 41 ]. The last thing that needs to be looked at is potential mediators of the link between social factors and teenage depression and suicidality (for example, gender, age, and the participation of parents) [ 22 ].

The Dangers That Come With Young Adults Utilizing Social Media

The experiences that adolescents have with their peers have a substantial impact on the onset and maintenance of psychopathology in those teenagers. Peer relationships in the world of social media can be more frequent, intense, and rapid than in real life [ 42 ]. Previous research [ 22 ] has identified a few distinct types of peer interactions that can take place online as potential risk factors for mental health. Being the target of cyberbullying, also known as cyber victimization, has been shown to relate to greater rates of self-inflicted damage, suicidal ideation, and a variety of other internalizing and externalizing issues [ 43 ]. Additionally, young people may be put in danger by the peer pressure that can be found on social networking platforms [ 44 ]. This can take the form of being rejected by peers, engaging in online fights, or being involved in drama or conflict [ 45 ]. Peer influence processes may also be amplified among teenagers who spend time online, where they have access to a wider diversity of their peers as well as content that could be damaging to them [ 46 ]. If young people are exposed to information on social media that depicts risky behavior, their likelihood of engaging in such behavior themselves (such as drinking or using other drugs) may increase [ 22 ]. It may be simple to gain access to online materials that deal with self-harm and suicide, which may result in an increase in the risk of self-harm among adolescents who are already at risk [ 22 ]. A recent study found that 14.8% of young people who were admitted to mental hospitals because they posed a risk to others or themselves had viewed internet sites that encouraged suicide in the two weeks leading up to their admission [ 24 ]. The research was conducted on young people who were referred to mental hospitals because they constituted a risk to others or themselves [ 24 ]. They prefer to publish pictures of themselves on social networking sites, which results in a steady flow of messages and pictures that are often and painstakingly modified to present people in a favorable light [ 24 ]. This influences certain young individuals, leading them to begin making unfavorable comparisons between themselves and others, whether about their achievements, their abilities, or their appearance [ 47 , 48 ].

There is a correlation between higher levels of social networking in comparison and depressed symptoms in adolescents, according to studies [ 25 ]. When determining how the use of technology impacts the mental health of adolescents, it is essential to consider the issue of displacement. This refers to the question of what other important activities are being replaced by time spent on social media [ 49 ]. It is a well-established fact that the circadian rhythms of children and adolescents have a substantial bearing on both their physical and mental development.

However, past studies have shown a consistent connection between using a mobile device before bed and poorer sleep quality results [ 50 ]. These results include shorter sleep lengths, decreased sleep quality, and daytime tiredness [ 50 ]. Notably, 36% of adolescents claim they wake up at least once over the course of the night to check their electronic devices, and 40% of adolescents say they use a mobile device within five minutes of going to bed [ 25 ]. Because of this, the impact of social media on the quality of sleep continues to be a substantial risk factor for subsequent mental health disorders in young people, making it an essential topic for the continuation of research in this area [ 44 ].

Most studies that have been conducted to investigate the link between using social media and experiencing depression symptoms have concentrated on how frequently and problematically people use social media [ 4 ]. Most of the research that was taken into consideration for this study found a positive and reciprocal link between the use of social media and feelings of depression and, on occasion, suicidal ideation [ 51 , 52 ]. Additionally, it is unknown to what extent the vulnerability of teenagers and the characteristics of substance use affect this connection [ 52 ]. It is also unknown whether other aspects of the environment, such as differences in cultural norms or the advice and support provided by parents, have any bearing on this connection [ 25 ]. Even if it is probable that moderate use relates to improved self-regulation, it is not apparent whether this is the result of intermediate users having naturally greater self-regulation [ 25 ].

Gains From Social Media

Even though most of the debate on young people and new media has centered on potential issues, the unique features of the social media ecosystem have made it feasible to support adolescent mental health in more ways than ever before [ 39 ]. Among other benefits, using social media may present opportunities for humor and entertainment, identity formation, and creative expression [ 53 ]. More mobile devices than ever before are in the hands of teenagers, and they are using social media at never-before-seen levels [ 27 ]. This may not come as a surprise given how strongly young people are drawn to digital devices and the affordances they offer, as well as their heightened craving for novelty, social acceptance, and affinity [ 27 ]. Teenagers are interacting with digital technology for longer periods of time, so it is critical to comprehend the effects of this usage and use new technologies to promote teens' mental health and well-being rather than hurt it [ 53 ]. Considering the ongoing public discussion, we should instead emphasize that digital technology is neither good nor bad in and of itself [ 27 ].

One of the most well-known benefits of social media is social connection; 81% of students say it boosts their sense of connectedness to others. Connecting with friends and family is usually cited by teenagers as the main benefit of social media, and prior research typically supports the notion that doing so improves people's well-being. Social media can be used to increase acceptance or a feeling of community by providing adolescents with opportunities to connect with others who share their interests, beliefs, and experiences [ 29 ]. Digital media has the potential to improve adolescent mental health in a variety of ways, including cutting-edge applications in medical screening, treatment, and prevention [ 28 ]. In terms of screening, past research has suggested that perusing social media pages for signs of melancholy or drug abuse may be viable. More advanced machine-learning approaches have been created to identify mental disease signs on social media, such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicidality. Self-report measures are used in most studies currently conducted on adolescent media intake. It is impossible to draw firm conclusions on whether media use precedes and predicts negative effects on mental health because research has only been conducted once. Adults frequently blame the media for the problems that younger generations face [ 30 ]. Because they are cyclical, media panics should not just be attributed to the novel and the unknown. Teenagers' time management, worldview, and social interactions have quickly and dramatically changed as a result of technology. Social media offers a previously unheard-of opportunity to spread awareness of mental health difficulties, and social media-based health promotion programs have been tested for a range of cognitive and behavioral health conditions. Thanks to social media's instant accessibility, extensive possibilities, and ability to reach remote areas, young people with mental health issues have exciting therapy options [ 54 ]. Preliminary data indicate that youth-focused mental health mobile applications are acceptable, but further research is needed to assess their usefulness and effectiveness. Youth now face new opportunities and problems as a result of the growing significance of digital media in their life. An expanding corpus of research suggests that teenagers' use of social media may have an impact on their mental health. But more research is needed [ 18 ] considering how swiftly the digital media landscape is changing.

Conclusions

In the digital era, people efficiently employ technology; it does not "happen" to them. Studies show that the average kid will not be harmed by using digital technology, but that does not mean there are no situations where it could. In this study, we discovered a connection between social media use and adolescent depression. Since cross-sectional research represents the majority, longitudinal studies are required. The social and personal life of young people is heavily influenced by social media. Based on incomplete and contradictory knowledge on young people and digital technology, professional organizations provide guidance to parents, educators, and institutions. If new technologies are necessary to promote social interaction or develop digital and relational (digitally mediated) skills for growing economies, policies restricting teen access to them may be ineffective. The research on the impact of social media on mental health is still in its early stages, and more research is needed before we can make definitive recommendations for parents, educators, or institutions. Reaching young people during times of need and when assistance is required is crucial for their health. The availability of various friendships and services may improve the well-being of teenagers.

Early childhood education plays a key role in fostering child development and preparing children for school and life. The aim of the present paper is to give an overview of research topics in early childhood education research based on the analysis of 39,926 scientific articles published between 2000 and 2021 and to explore research trends over time. Therefore, a structural topic modelling approach was used. The analyses show a strong increase in publication activity over the last years as well as the diversity of research topics, which provide important insights for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals in various areas (cultural diversity, design of inclusive learning environments, educational institutions, professional development issues, educational policy and reforms, etc.). Beside topics like cultural diversity, and inclusive learning environments more specific research topics, for example self-regulation, executive functions, numeracy, language development and physical activity have been increasingly addressed in publications over the years.

Introduction

High quality education in all age groups play an important role in the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Agenda 2030 (United Nations 2015 ). Early childhood education (ECE) is ascribed a key role in promoting child development and preparing the children for their school careers (Burchinal et al. 2000 ; Duncan and National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Early Child Care Research Network 2003 ; Li et al. 2013 ; Mashburn et al. 2008 ).

With an increasing number of research activities and scientific publications in the field of early childhood education, it is becoming more and more difficult to get an overview of topics and trends in a research field (Linnenluecke et al. 2020 ). Common research synthesis approaches are systematic literature reviews or meta-analysis (Schmidt 2007 ; Siddaway et al. 2019 ). Systematic reviews help to get an overview of the current state of research related to a specific topic (Linnenluecke et al. 2020 ). For example, in early childhood education (ECE) research current literature reviews and meta-analysis were conducted concerning the role of early childhood educators  experiences (McMullen et al. 2020 ), structural and process quality aspects of ECE programs (Eadie et al. 2022 ), specific ECE quality indicators like staff-child ration (Perlman et al. 2017 ), strategies to promote children’s physical activity in early childhood education settings (Mak et al. 2021 ), children’s social, emotional and cognitive development (Johnstone et al. 2022 ), multicultural education (Khalfaoui et al. 2021 ), professional development of ECE professionals (Brunsek et al. 2020 ) and various child outcomes. It is hard to obtain a general overview of the major topics and temporal trends in this research field due to the large number of publications. One way in dealing with such big data is structural topic modelling (Roberts et al. 2019 ).

The aim of this current paper is to identify key research topics and temporal trends in early childhood education research between 2000 and 2021 by analysing scientific publications using a structural topic modeling approach.

Structural topic modelling

Qualitative text analyses like grounded theory (Strauss and Corbin 1997 ) are resource intensive and have limitations in analysing a large number of texts. The progress in computer sciences leads to the development of different text mining approaches like Latent Dirichlet Allocation (Blei et al. 2003 ) or structural topic modeling (Roberts et al. 2014 , 2019 ) to deal with large amounts of textual data (Tonidandel et al. 2022 ; Vayansky and Kumar 2020 ). Topic modeling is a useful natural language processing technique to discover latent research themes/topics from a large number of documents (Sharma et al. 2021 ; Vayansky and Kumar 2020 ). Topic modeling is an “unsupervised machine learning technique that automatically learns and discovers the latent themes and their prevalences across a collection of documents” (Sharma et al. 2021 p. 3). Unsupervised techniques gather the themes of the texts in an inductive way without predefinition of codes ex ante by the researcher (supervised methods) (Roberts et al. 2014 ; Tonidandel et al. 2022 ). Not only the frequency of words is analysed, but also the relationships between words (which words occur frequently together) and documents are taken into account (Tonidandel et al. 2022 ). “The central premise underlying topic models is that words that occur in a similar context tend to have similar meanings” (Tonidandel et al. 2022 p. 2). The advantage of structural topic modeling is that meta-data (e. g. publication year) of the documents could be included in the analyses. The relationships between the topics and the meta-data could be estimated (Roberts et al. 2019 ). This approach makes it possible to discover temporal trends of research topics in a specific scientific field. Structural topic modeling was used in tourism research to analyse hotel reviews (Hu et al. 2019 ), to gather a comprehensive overview of information management research (Sharma et al. 2021 ), in educational technology research (Chen et al. 2020 ) or in the field of learning analytics and educational data mining (Lemay et al. 2021 ).

The aim of the present study is to get an overview of major research topics in the field of early childhood education research and discover temporal research trends. Therefore, a structural topic modelling approach is used.

Following research questions were examined:

What are the major research topics in early childhood education research published between 2000 and 2021?

How have the identified research topics evolved over time?

Data collection and data cleaning

Bibliometric data of early childhood research papers were collected from Web of Science (WoS Core Collection) and Scopus because these databases provide a great coverage of social science literature (Norris and Oppenheim 2007 ). Following search terms (in the title, keywords, and abstracts) were used to identify research papers for the analyses: (“early child*” OR “preschool” OR “kindergarten”) AND (“education” OR “teach*”). Only articles in the field of social science, education, psychology and multidisciplinary etc. published between 2000 and 2021 and written in English language were exported (author names, year, title, abstract, keywords, journal etc.) from the databases. The exported bibliometric data from WoS and Scopus were merged using the R (R Core Team 2017 ) package bibliometrix (Aria and Cuccurullo 2017 ). Duplicate records were removed. 39,926 articles were used for structural topic modeling analyses (see Table  1 ).

In a next step the data were cleaned by transforming all characters to lower, removing URLs, punctuation, numbers, stop words (standard stop word list included in the tm package ; e.g. and, by), symbols and special characters using the tm package (Feinerer et al. 2008 ) in R . These are standard data pre-processing steps in text analysis (Banks et al. 2018 ). Because there is no standard stop word dictionary, the list from the tm package (Feinerer et al. 2008 ) was used. Stop word were removed because these occur very frequently but they are not very important to get information about the content of the paper. Furthermore, the search terms were also removed because these words occur in all papers. Data were lemmatized using the textstem (Rinker 2018 ) R package. In lemmatization, different words that meaning the same thing are replaced by a lemma using a dictionary (Welbers et al. 2017 ). For the current study a dictionary was constructed for lemmatization. Descriptive analysis of the data were performed in the R package bibliometrix (Aria and Cuccurullo 2017 ).

Data analysis

In structural topic modeling (Roberts et al. 2019 ) meta-data of the texts (year of publication) could be incorporated in the analyses. This makes it possible to get information of developments and research trends over the time. Structural topic modeling analyses were conducted using the R (R Core Team 2017 ) packages stm (Roberts et al. 2019 ) and tm (Feinerer et al. 2008 ).

The first step is to determine the number of topics. In an iterative process, topic models with 10 to 100 topics were calculated and compared using the semantic coherence and exclusivity metrics of each model. The average semantic coherence describes “a well-performing measure of topic model quality, which measured whether the top words in each topic tended to occur together across documents” (Vanhala et al. 2020 p. 51). Topic e xclusivity is “the amount of overlap in top words across topics” (Tonidandel et al. 2022 p. 5). These criteria were calculated for each model and the model with high values in both metrics was chosen. FREX metrics for each topic (frequency exclusivity scoring), which combines semantic coherence and exclusivity of words in a topic, were used to assess topic quality (Roberts et al. 2019 ). “FREX is the weighted harmonic mean of the word s rank in terms of exclusivity and frequency” (Roberts et al. 2019 p. 11). The words with the highest probability and exclusivity (FREX) for each topic which are used to name the topic are shown in the supplementary materials of this paper. To identify temporal trends in research topics, the relationship between publication year (meta-data) and topics was analysed using linear regressions in the stm package (Roberts et al. 2019 ). For a detailed description of structural topic modeling and the R package stm see Roberts et al. ( 2019 ).

Descriptive analyses

The dataset consists of 39,926 articles published between 2000 and 2021. The articles were published in 3406 journals (see Table  1 ). Figure  1 shows that research in early childhood education has continuous increased over the years. The annual growth rate of publications is 10.5% (see Table  1 ; Fig.  1 ).

Topic models with 10 to 100 topics were compared using semantic coherence and exclusivity metrics. Models with 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49 and 56 topics show good scores on both metrics. Since there is no single correct solution concerning the number of topics, the interpretability of these models was inspected in detail. The model with 48 major research topics (see Table  2 ) were chosen because this model shows high semantic coherence and high exclusivity values and the topics in this model have good interpretability. To interpret the topics in the model and name it, the word profiles of each topic were inspected using the words with the highest probability and FREX (Airoldi and Bischof 2016 ; Roberts et al. 2019 ) words (see supplementary materials). “FREX weights words by their overall frequency and how exclusive they are to the topic” (Roberts et al. 2019 p. 13). Furthermore articles which are highly associated (top 10 papers per topic) with a specific topic were screened to interpret and name the topic (Roberts et al. 2019 ).

The 10 most frequent research topics are (full list of topics see Table  2 ; Fig.  2 ):

Topic 13: Educational institution and processes– development and evaluation issues

Topic 22: Assessment and measures (e.g. development assessment, social-emotional measures)

Topic 28: Interventions in ECE (e.g. cognitive and behavioural interventions): development improvement and effectivity

Topic 23: Professional development of ECE educators and leadership issues

Topic 25: Educational policy, -reforms and -systems

Topic 46: Inclusive practices: challenges and support issues (e.g. coaching, supervision)

Topic 44: (Pro)social behaviour, aggression, violence, bulling, peer rejection

Topic 34: Performance issues: abilities, cognition, memory, visuospatial etc.

To identify research trends over time, the publication year was included in the analyses using linear regressions. Figures  3 , 4 and 5 show topics which have significantly ( p  < 0.05) changed of the years due to publication activity. Top 10 topics were marked with * to indicate that major research topics could decrease over the years even though there is still high research activity in these topics. The analyses show that research activity dealing with cultural practices (topic 9*; which is the most frequent studied topic between 2000 and 2021 see Table  1 ), development and evaluation issues regarding educational institutions and processes (topic 13*), educational practices, aims and knowledge of early childhood educators (topic 37), relationship issues (topic 20) and challenges and support issues in inclusive education (topic 46*) has significantly increased over the timespan.

Furthermore, research dealing with issues like self-regulation and executive functions (topic 24), early childhood numeracy and mathematics (topic 29), music activities (topic 32), language development (topic 40), interests (e.g. in stem) (topic 47), physical activity (topic 16), play environments (topic 30), children’s and ECE professionals’ creativity, critical thinking of ECE professionals and children’s spatial skills (topic 8), information and communication technologies in ECE (topic 45) and motivational issues (topic 19) significantly increased of the years.

Topic 1 which is characterized by research dealing with head start programs, transition and school readiness research, attachment research (topic 2), research in the field of adhs, autism and depression (topic 10), disability and special educational needs (topic 43), gender (topic 12) and effective teaching (e.g. instruction and feedback issues) topics (topic 39) show a significant decrease over the timespan 2000 to 2021.

Top 10 topics dealing with aggression and violence issues (topic 44*), assessment and measurements (topic 22*), and the development of interventions (topic 28*) show high publication activity even though they decrease over the time. Following top 10 topics did not significantly change over time: ECE professionals’ experiences and beliefs (e.g. self-efficacy) and attitudes (topic 38*), professional development ECE educators and leadership issues (topic 23*), educational policy, -reforms and -systems (topic 25*) and performance issues: abilities, memory, visuospatial, cognition etc. (topic 34*). The number of published articles was relatively stable.

Discussion and conclusion

The aim of this structural topic model study is to provide an overview of the major research topics and trends in early childhood education literature between 2000 and 2021 using a structural topic modeling approach. The present results show the diversity of research topics as well as a strong increase (2004–2021) in international publications in this research field.

Socially and educationally relevant topics (cp. Sustainable Development Goals 2030) such as cultural practices, design of educational processes in educational institutions, inclusion and the support structures required for implementation, relationship aspects in ECE, play environments, educational practices, aims and knowledge of early childhood educators as well as communication and information technologies have increased in scientific discourse over the years. More specific areas of development, such as self-regulation, executive functions, motivation and interest (e.g. stem), numeracy, creativity, critical thinking of educators, music activities, language development and physical activity, are also increasingly addressed in publications.

Further thematic areas that have shaped the research landscape between 2000 and 2021 (even if publication activity has declined or remained relatively stable over time) are (pro)social behaviour, aggression and violence issues, performance, assessment and measurement issues, intervention research, experiences and training of educational professionals, and leadership issues. The examination of various educational systems and reforms is also often the subject of academic work.

There are also research topics which show a significant decline in publication activity, for example, topics that focus specifically on children with special needs. The expansion of the concept of inclusion (Education for all) (UNESCO 2005 ) may have contributed to this. Despite the trend of topics like physical activity and health, these are less frequently represented in the research landscape than research on developmental areas such as language, self-regulation, social-emotional development, and cognitive skills.

Topics like professionalisation and ECE quality aspects (support services in the implementation of inclusive practices, further training of pedagogical staff, leadership, educational policy systems and reforms, etc.) are also given high priority in early childhood education research.

In summary, early childhood education research provides a comprehensive body of knowledge in many areas that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (United Nations). These include, for example, the creation of effective inclusive learning environments for all (SDG 4 A), access to quality early childhood education and preparation for primary education (SDG 4.2), professional development of ECE teachers and cooperation (SDG 4 C), cultural diversity, non-violence and peace etc. (SDG 4.7) and health and well-being issues (SDG 3). This body of research should be taken into account when implementing interventions (e.g. creating inclusive learning environments, professional development programs, physical activity and health interventions for children) in early childhood education institutions. Furthermore, changes in ECE education systems and decisions related to the provision of resources (to build professional development programs for ECE teachers, creation of favourable working conditions etc.) recommendations based on scientific work should be considered.

The diversity of topics in early childhood education reflects the general trend towards interdisciplinary research in education and educational sciences (Huang et al. 2020 ), which should be intensified. The increase of research activity in early childhood education also means that it is becoming increasingly difficult to get an overview of sub-areas of this research field. Interdisciplinary cooperation can help to bundle expertise from different fields. Even though there is a wide range of research, the translation of research findings to practice, and education systems is still challenging.

Limitations

Although the two scientific databases Web of Science and Scopus have a good coverage of international publication activity in this field, it must be noted that research papers that are not listed in these databases are not taken into account in this study. These include unpublished research papers, papers published as project reports on various homepages or published in journals that are listed in other databases. Publications written in non-English languages are also not included. Research papers written in English language show higher numbers of citations than non-English language articles which does not mean that non-English language papers are of lesser quality (Di Bitetti and Ferreras 2017 ), but it is assumed that their impact on the scientific community is lower than publications in English language. So, the role of non-English papers in the international discourse and the impact on the scientific community tends to be seen as rather limited due to the language barrier, lower probability of citation and the restricted readership (compared to papers published in English-language journals with high coverage due to their indexing in the major databases Web of Science and Scopus). Further limitations refer to the selection of the optimal number of topics. It has to be mentioned, that there is no single correct solution when choosing the number of topics in the model (Schmiedel et al. 2019 ). Standard metrics and interpretability were used to choose the model.
