11 Ways To Enjoy Summer When You’re Working A Full-Time Job

There you are: sitting on the beach, covered in sunscreen, reading your favorite book, drinking your favorite drink under the cool shade of an umbrella. Life doesn't get any better than this. Suddenly, a door slams, a phone rings, a printer turns on. You jolt back into consciousness. You're at work, sitting in your cubicle, without even a hint of sunshine streaming in from outside.

When you're working a full-time job, finding time to enjoy the warm, bright summer weather can be a challenge. This is especially true for young professionals , as many of them are used to having summers off (or, at the very least, having a flexible summer schedule). But there's no need to feel trapped behind your cubicle walls. Go out and enjoy summer!

Here are a few tips for making the most of your summer while working full time.

1. Grab Some Foldable Chairs

Keep a couple of foldable camping chairs at the office so you and a co-worker can catch some rays during lunch—whether it's in the park or the parking lot.

2. Keep A Beach Bag In Your Car​

Keep a bag full of summer supplies for your favorite summer activities . Having a bag (or, in my case, a backseat) full of towels, sunscreen, and swimwear keeps you prepared for anything. Friends hitting up the pool after work? You're covered. Once the clock strikes five, you can head to your destination of choice immediately.

3. Plan An Office Outing

Plan an office field trip to the beach, the park, or the pool. Just do something fun so your brain can recharge and refresh!

4. Organize Group Walks

Get a bunch of co-workers together and go on regular walks around town during lunch. (Or you could suggest a quick jaunt over to the ice cream shop.) This is a great way to get some fresh air, sunshine, and exercise.

5. Eat Lunch At The Park

When you find yourself eating out, hit up places with a deck, porch, or patio of some sort. Obviously, eating out every day isn't really a feasible option for most of us, so look into alternative ideas as well. Pack a lunch and hit the park for your own little picnic.

6. Organize Office Sports

Whether it's setting up an official office sports team or just hanging out with your colleagues a few times a week, playing sports is a great way to get out and enjoy the weather. Have a field nearby? Try setting up some slow-pitch softball games. Or see if you can get a basketball hoop for the office so you and a few co-workers can shoot some hoops at lunch.

7. Join A Professional Group

During the summer, professional networking groups often have fun events like harbor cruises, pub crawls, and outdoor mixers. Find a professional group in your area and make networking fun this summer.

8. Have An Office BBQ

Get your grill on! Talk to your boss about setting up an office BBQ. Ask everyone to contribute their favorite dish, side, or drink. Fire up the grill and relax! Hey, it's summer after all.

9. Wake Up Early

Yes, yes, I know...waking up early is an incredibly painful and unbearable experience for some of us, but waking up even an hour earlier has its benefits—especially in the summer. Go for a morning run, putter around in the garden, or watch the sunrise with a loved one. Talk about starting the day off right!

10. Strategically Use Your Time Off

Strategically use your vacation days around holidays. This way, you can make a potentially long weekend longer without having to use too much of your precious vacation time . Half days are also pretty awesome. It's amazing how much you can do with four extra hours! If you want an early weekend but don't want to burn up your vacation days too quickly, try taking a half day on a Friday instead of using a full day off.

11. Bike To Work

If you're one of the lucky few who live within walking or biking distance of work, take advantage of it! Not only will you get plenty of fresh air, but you'll also save money on gas, which is always a plus!

The number of interviews you get might be a gauge for measuring the effectiveness of your cover letters. A cover letter has two primary objectives: It gives a succinct description of what you have to offer and it compels the recruiter to review your resume. Your end goal is, therefore, a call from the recruiter to schedule an interview. Using your cover letter to convey reasons why you should be interviewed, then wrapping up your letter by politely asking for an interview, often is a successful approach.

Opening Your Letter

Create an impressive introduction that says who you are and why you’re sending your resume. You could request an interview in this paragraph, but you're more likely to get the positive results you want if you lay a foundation first. The reader doesn’t know enough about your qualifications from just the first few sentences of your letter.

I am a recent graduate of Texas A & M with a 3.8 GPA in accounting looking for related work in a w__ell-established company like yours.

Describing Your Qualifications

The second paragraph should highlight your skills and expertise that mirror the job requirements. This is where you start convincing the reader that you’re a qualified candidate deserving an interview. Select three to five of your qualifications that align with the company’s needs. Provide details about your expertise incorporating applicable industry terminology, and if you hold project management professional certification incorporate that into the body of your letter.

I am confident that I have the organizational skills to excel at the project management job. In my current position, I am responsible for multiple projects with competing deadlines. I just finished major updates to our company's proprietary software ahead of s__hedule.

Expanding on Your Skills

Focus on your core competencies and professional skills. This is another angle to further convince the reader that you’re qualified. Pull key words and phrases from the job posting and match them to your competencies. For example, if the job posting says the company seeks candidates who pay attention to detail and are comfortable working in a fast-paced industry, describe yourself in those terms.

I am a detail-focused professional who thrives in deadline-centered work environments.

Add a sentence or two about your professional values and business principles. Character matters to potential employers.

If you are seeking an ethical, hard working employee committed to ongoing professional development, I am an ideal candidate.

Closing Your Letter

There are a couple different ways to end your letter. One option is to extend your appreciation for the opportunity to submit an application. Also mention your interest in an interview.

Thanks in advance for your favorable consideration. I welcome the opportunity to discuss this job opening with you in a personal interview.

Alternatively, state when you’ll follow up to schedule an interview.

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Oh wow, I’d really love to work here, but I don’t even know where to start?” A great first step is to get your foot in the door by landing an interview. If you can nail the interview, you can get almost any job that you want. The thing is, to get an interview, you’ve got to ask for one. Luckily, whether it’s your dream job or a position that will help you advance in your career path, asking for an interview doesn’t have to be super complicated. Whether you’re reaching out by email or you’re including a cover letter in your application, the key is to grab the attention of your potential boss and show them why you’re a great candidate for the job. After that, asking is the easy part!

When to Ask

Step 1 Put your request in the subject line of your response email.

  • For instance, you could craft a subject line like “Interview Request for Personal Assistant Position.”
  • If the company has multiple locations, include the one you’re applying for in the subject line.
  • Keep it professional and avoid using demanding or rude language like, “I want an interview.”

Step 2 Email your resume to a hiring manager if there isn’t a job posting.

  • If you want to take a shot at applying to work for your favorite company, it might be worth a shot!
  • Some people may have an email filter that blocks messages with attachments. If your email gets returned to you as undeliverable, try sending it again without your resume attached.

Step 3 Close your cover...

  • For example, you could say something like, “I’d love the chance to talk more about the position! Let me know if you’d like to set up an interview.”
  • Go with something like “Sincerely” or “Best” as a professional complimentary close.

Step 4 Ask a hiring manager for a short interview at the end of a phone call.

  • For example, you could end the call by saying something like, “I’d love to discuss the job more with you. Can we set up a 20-minute meeting to talk in person?”
  • Twenty minutes won’t eat up too much of their time and they may be more likely to agree to a short interview.
  • If they aren’t available any time soon, ask them if you can schedule a short meeting for a specific time and date. Leave your name and number so they have your info.

Step 5 Bring your resume and ask a hiring manager in person.

  • For instance, after you talk to a manager about why you’re interested in the job, you could say something like, “But listen, I know you’re super busy. If it’s alright with you, could we set up a short, 20-minute meeting to talk more about it?”
  • If a manager isn’t available to speak with you, try leaving your name and number with a receptionist or another work and ask them to give you a call.

Step 1 Explain who you are and state your request clearly at the top of the email.

  • For example, you could start your email with something like, “Hello, my name is Chris Smith, and I’m writing in regards to the office manager position. I’d love the opportunity to be considered and potentially interview for the position.”

Step 2 Reference 3 skills you have that would benefit the company.

  • Try to mention skills that are relevant to the job you’re applying for. For instance, if you’re trying to get an interview for a copy editor position, talk about your writing skills and work ethic rather than your love of graphic novels or hiking.
  • If you’re applying for a receptionist position, for example, you could say something like, “Anybody who knows me knows that I love talking to people and helping them find what they need, which should come in handy as a receptionist. I’m also a fast learner and I’m happy to try new things if something comes up that I can help out with in the office.”

Step 3 Keep your email brief and be flexible in your request to meet.

  • If your email is really long, it may get ignored.
  • Try a friendly and flexible request like, “I’m really interested in the position, and I’m available to meet for an interview whenever it’s most convenient for you.”

Step 4 Format your email...

  • If your email address isn’t super professional, you might want to make a new one that’s a little more formal.
  • Whatever you do, do not use decorative fonts like Comic Sans!
  • Make sure you spell the person’s name correctly if you know it and use the right title. For instance, if they’re a doctor, use the “Dr.” title rather than Mr. or Ms.

Step 5 Attach your resume if it’s requested and send your email.

  • You could add a line like, “Let me know if you’d like to see a copy of my current resume.”

Step 6 Send a thank you email if they respond to you.

  • Waiting for a response can feel agonizing. But try not to follow up with emails asking about your potential interview or you could turn them off to the idea of hiring you.

  • Take a look at their company structure so you know who the bosses are.

Step 2 Use a landline so the call is less likely to get dropped.

  • If you can’t use a landline, try to find a place where your phone has full service.

Step 3 Call the company’s main number and ask for the hiring manager.

  • If they’re unavailable, try asking for their voicemail. You can leave a short message asking them to call you back. Make sure you leave your name and number so they can reach you.

Step 4 Introduce yourself and ask if it’s a convenient time for them to talk.

  • If they don’t have time for a call, ask them when would be a better time for you to call back.

Step 5 Mention your experience and education to show them you’re capable.

  • For instance, if you’re calling about an accounting position, you could say something like, “I’ve always been good with numbers. That’s why I majored in accounting in college and started working at a firm as soon as I graduated.”
  • If you don’t have a ton of academic credentials, try focusing more on your experience. For a construction manager position, for example, you could say something like, “I’ve been on job sites all my life and I’ve been a manager for the past 6 years.”

Step 6 Ask for a 20-minute interview at the end of the call.

  • Avoid having a resume longer than 1 page or you could turn off a potential employer.

Step 2 Practice a 15-second pitch so you can impress the manager.

  • For instance, let’s say you want to try to land an interview for a copy editor position, you could say something like, “I love writing, I love reading, and I love reading and editing writing. I’ve always had a knack for helping people improve their work and I believe in the work you guys do. I think I’d be a great fit if you’d be willing to give me a shot.”
  • You may not have much time to catch their attention. A strong, short pitch could land you a potential interview.
  • Try practicing your pitch to friends and family for feedback.

Step 3 Walk in and ask if you can speak to the hiring manager.

  • Be polite to the receptionist. You don’t want to make any enemies before you even talk to the manager!
  • If you aren’t able to speak with a hiring manager, ask if you can leave your resume with the front desk. That way, they’ll have all of your contact info and work experience handy.

Step 4 Ask the manager if they have 20 minutes for an interview.

  • If they don’t have time for an interview then, ask if you can schedule one for another time.

An ideal cover letter typically ranges from a half page to one full page. Aim to structure it into four paragraphs, totaling around 250 to 400 words, unless the job posting states otherwise. Some employers may have specific guidelines like word or character limits, writing prompt, or questions to address. In such cases, be sure to follow these instructions from the job posting.

Now that you’re sold on how important cover letters are, here are eight steps to writing one that screams, “I’m a great hire!”

Step 1: Write a fresh cover letter for each job (but yes, you can use a template)

Sure, it’s way faster and easier to take the cover letter you wrote for your last application, change the name of the company, and send it off. But most employers want to see that you’re truly excited about the specific position and organization—which means creating a custom letter for each position.

While it’s OK to recycle a few strong sentences and phrases from one cover letter to the next, don’t even think about sending out a 100% generic letter. “Dear Hiring Manager, I am excited to apply to the open position at your company” is an immediate signal to recruiters and hiring managers that you’re mass-applying to every job listing that pops up on LinkedIn.

Step 2: Add your contact info

At the top of your cover letter, you should list out your basic info. You can even copy the same heading from your resume if you’d like. Some contact info you might include (and the order to include it in):

  • Your pronouns (optional)
  • Your location (optional)
  • Your email address
  • Your phone number (optional)
  • Your Linkedin, portfolio, or personal website URL (optional)

Note that only name and email are mandatory, and you don’t need to put a full address on a cover letter or resume anymore. A city and state (or metro area) are more than enough. So your header might look like this:

If the job posting tells you to submit your cover letter in the body of an email, you can add your contact info at the end, after your name (and if you’d like to forgo the email address here, you can—they have it already). So your sign off could look like this:

Step 3: Address your cover letter to the hiring manager—preferably by name

The most traditional way to address a cover letter is to use the person’s first and last name, including “Mr.” or “Ms.” (for example, “Dear Ms. Jane Smith” or just “Dear Ms. Smith”). But to avoid accidentally using the wrong title—or worse, inadvertently misgendering someone—first and last name also work just fine.

If “Dear” feels a bit too stiff, try “Hello.” But never use generic salutations like “ To Whom it May Concern ” or “Dear Sir or Madam.”

Step 4: Craft an opening paragraph that’ll hook your reader

Your opening sets the stage for the whole cover letter. So you want it to be memorable, friendly, conversational, and hyper-relevant to the job you’re pursuing.

No need to lead with your name—the hiring manager can see it already. But it’s good to mention the job you’re applying for (they may be combing through candidates for half a dozen different jobs).

You could go with something simple like, “I am excited to apply for [job] with [Company].” But consider introducing yourself with a snappy first paragraph that highlights your excitement about the company you’re applying to, your passion for the work you do, and/or your past accomplishments.

This is a prime spot to include the “why” for your application. Make it very clear why you want this job at this company. Are you a longtime user of their products? Do you have experience solving a problem they’re working on? Do you love their brand voice or approach to product development? Do your research on the company (and check out their Muse profile if they have one) to find out.

Step 5: Convey why you’d be a great hire for this job

A common cover letter mistake is only talking about how great the position would be for you. Frankly, hiring managers are aware of that—what they really want to know is what you’re going to bring to the position and company.

So once you’ve got the opening under wraps, you should pull out a few key ideas that will make up the backbone of your cover letter. They should show that you understand what the organization is looking for and spell out how your background lines up with the position.

Study the job description for hints . What problems is the company looking to solve with this hire? What skills or experiences are mentioned high up, or more than once? These will likely be the most important qualifications.

If you tend to have a hard time singing your own praises and can’t nail down your strengths , here’s a quick trick: What would your favorite boss, your best friend, or your mentor say about you? How would they sing your praises? Use the answers to inform how you write about yourself. You can even weave in feedback you’ve received to strengthen your case (occasionally, don’t overuse this!). For example:

“When I oversaw our last office move, my color-coded spreadsheets covering every minute detail of the logistics were legendary; my manager said I was so organized, she’d trust me to plan an expedition to Mars.”

Step 6: Back up your qualifications with examples and numbers

Look at your list of qualifications from the previous step, and think of examples from your past that prove you have them. Go beyond your resume. Don’t just regurgitate what the hiring manager can read elsewhere.

Simply put, you want to paint a fuller picture of what experiences and accomplishments make you a great hire and show off what you can sashay through their doors with and deliver once you land the job.

For example, what tells a hiring manager more about your ability to win back former clients? This: “I was in charge of identifying and re-engaging former clients.” Or this: “By analyzing past client surveys, NPS scores, and KPIs, as well as simply picking up the phone, I was able to bring both a data-driven approach and a human touch to the task of re-engaging former clients.”

If you're having trouble figuring out how to do this, try asking yourself these questions and finding answers that line up with the qualifications you’ve chosen to focus on:

  • What approach did you take to tackling one of the responsibilities you’ve mentioned on your resume?
  • What details would you include if you were telling someone a (very short!) story about how you accomplished one of your resume bullet points?
  • What about your personality, passion, or work ethic made you especially good at getting the job done?

Come up with your examples, then throw in a few numbers. Hiring managers love to see stats—they show you’ve had a measurable impact on an organization you’ve worked for. Did you bring in more clients than any of your peers? Put together an impressive number of events? Make a process at work 30% more efficient? Work it into your cover letter!

Step 7: Finish with a strong conclusion

It’s tempting to treat the final lines of your cover letter as a throwaway: “I look forward to hearing from you.” But your closing paragraph is your last chance to emphasize your enthusiasm for the company or how you’d be a great fit for the position. You can also use the end of your letter to add important details—like, say, the fact that you’re willing to relocate for the job.

Try something like this:

“I believe my energy, desire to innovate, and experience as a sales leader will serve OrangePurple Co. very well. I would love to meet to discuss the value I could add as your next West Coast Sales Director. I appreciate your consideration and hope to meet with you soon.”

Step 8: Reread and revise

We shouldn’t have to tell you to run your cover letter through spell-check, but remember that having your computer scan for typos isn’t the same as editing . Set your letter aside for a day or even just a few hours, and then read through it again with fresh eyes—you’ll probably notice some changes you want to make.

You might even want to ask a friend or family member to give it a look. In addition to asking them if they spot any errors, you should ask them two questions:

  • Does this sell me as the best person for the job?
  • Does it get you excited?

If the answer to either is “no,” or even slight hesitation, go back for another pass.

Here are four example cover letters that follow the advice given above. Keep in mind that different situations may require adjustments in your approach. For instance, experienced job seekers can emphasize accomplishments from previous roles, while those with less experience might highlight volunteer work, personal projects, or skills gained through education.

Example #1: Cover letter for a job application

As you write your cover letter, here are a few more tips to consider to help you stand out from the stack of applicants:

  • Keep it short and sweet: There are always exceptions to the rule, but in general, for resumes and cover letters alike, don’t go over a page. (Check out these tips for cutting down your cover letter .)
  • Never apologize for your missing experience: When you don’t meet all of the job requirements, it’s tempting to use lines like, “Despite my limited experience as a manager…” or “While I may not have direct experience in marketing…” But why apologize ? Instead of drawing attention to your weaknesses, emphasize the strengths and transferable skills you do have.
  • Strike the right tone: You want to find a balance between being excessively formal in your writing—which can make you come off as stiff or insincere—and being too conversational. Let your personality shine through, for sure, but also keep in mind that a cover letter shouldn’t sound like a text to an old friend.
  • Consider writing in the company’s “voice:” Cover letters are a great way to show that you understand the environment and culture of the company and industry. Spending some time reading over the company website or stalking their social media before you get started can be a great way to get in the right mindset—you’ll get a sense for the company’s tone, language, and culture, which are all things you’ll want to mirror—especially if writing skills are a core part of the job.
  • Go easy on the enthusiasm: We can’t tell you how many cover letters we’ve seen from people who are “absolutely thrilled for the opportunity” or “very excitedly applying!” Yes, you want to show personality, creativity, and excitement. But downplay the adverbs a bit, and keep the level of enthusiasm for the opportunity genuine and believable.

The bottom line with cover letters is this: They matter, much more than the naysayers will have you believe. If you nail yours, you could easily go from the “maybe” pile straight to “Oh, hell yes.”

We’ve all been there: You see a job description that seems perfect. You’ve got the right experience, it’s at a company you admire, and even the pay range seems decent. You should apply! But, inevitably, that means submitting a customized cover letter . Or at least revising the last one you agonized over.

Here at the Work Life section, we get how daunting it can feel to write a cover letter—even when you’re genuinely excited for the job. What do you say? Should you really write a creative hook , or is that cheesy? Can you use ChatGPT ? What actually makes a letter stand out to recruiters ? 

Think of the letter as a chance to do one main thing, writes Marc Cenedella , founder of job search site Ladders: It connects “the positive achievements of your past and future to the present needs of future employers.”

There are also things you definitely want to avoid in a cover letter , says hiring manager Sara McCord . “First things first, I skim the document for anything that could be disqualifying,” she writes. “That includes typos, a “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To Whom It May Concern” salutation, or a vibe so nonspecific that it reeks of find-replace.”

Remember, your cover letter shouldn’t just repeat the same information that you include in your résumé. (We’ve got a whole separate guide on how to ensure your résumé shines , too.) It can be a great place to let your natural enthusiasm for the role come through, writes contributor Judith Humphrey. Sure, they can be a little daunting, but they can also give you the necessary edge over other candidates—especially ones who don’t bother to write a custom message.

“Writing letters may seem old-school, but cover letters do have a number of benefits,” writes Humphrey. “A cover letter gives you an opportunity to personalize your submission, show your interest in and knowledge of the hiring company, and set forth your credentials in a way that is not as formulaic as in your résumé.”

It may sound easy, but it really is an effective touch to end your cover letter. Remember: You are marketing yourself with your applications. Every marketer and salesperson knows you need to close a sale with a good call to action; a clear step you want the prospective customer to take.

Think of asking for the interview like your personal call to action , urging hiring managers to buy in and contact you because of your expertise.

Although it takes more finesse than saying “Hire me now!” in bold letters, this quick closing sentence is your chance to sell your qualifications and desire to join this company. You want to exude confidence to convince the hiring manager to take action.

By initiating the interview conversation, you’re demonstrating your tenacious, go-getter mentality.

However, there are several variables to consider when drafting your cover letter’s closing paragraph. I’ll guide you through them.

Attract Positive Attention

As a job seeker, you don’t want to attract the wrong kind of attention with your cover letter. It’s important to emphasize the valuable skillset you will bring to the role without coming across the wrong way.

Although your tone will vary slightly depending on your industry, we recommend your cover letter maintain a confident, respectful voice throughout. For example, if you’re an executive, you must come across as mature and powerful, as you share some of the lessons you’ve learned in your long career.

Avoid sounding pushy at all costs, for this may cause you to stand out like a sore thumb. Hiring managers want to bring in people who sound excited about the role and who will mesh with their company culture .

Use the Right Tools

By tools, we mean words. Phrasing matters, and that’s why we suggest you use these three practical techniques to wrap up your cover letter:

1. Provide contact information. Although your contact information should also go at the top of your cover letter in the header that matches your resume, it may also be helpful to incorporate your phone number and/or email address into the closing sentence as another helpful reminder that reinforces your ask.

2. Offer availability. You can offer periods of availability that work for you (i.e., “I am available for a phone call Monday-Friday in the evening.”). This shows you’re thinking ahead and carving out time to learn more about this role.

3. Be clear. Make sure your interview ask is direct and clear! A simple sentence like “I look forward to discussing what my background can bring to the team at Company A in greater detail with you during an interview” is concise and professional.

This closing paragraph not only summarizes how the job seeker can contribute meaningfully to the organization, but also how to best contact them for an interview. It is straightforward without feeling overbearing. Several clients of mine have been successful when framing their cover letters this way. 7 Tips for Writing a Cover Letter That Lands Interviews

Cover letters provide the opportunity to elaborate on job skills and past employment experiences listed on your resume, show off your writing ability (something important to nearly all employers), and make yourself stand out among other applicants vying for the same position.

Here are seven tips to write a kick-ass cover letter, and beat the unemployment blues:

Cover Letter Tip 1

Each time you submit a cover letter to an employer, revise the letter to make it specific to the position and company. Highlight job skills, traits and past work experience most relevant to the position at hand.

This means going beyond inserting the name of the company and a few detailed sentences into a previously written letter.

Employers recognize when job applicants have sent a stock cover letter, and when they’ve written a unique one (especially when you forget to change the name of the company, telling Company A how interested you are in the available position at Company B) .

Avoid this recipe for how not to get an interview. Draft a custom cover letter for each position for which you apply.

Cover Letter Tip 2

Follow the format of a business letter. This means including contact information at the top (name, address, phone number, email), followed by the date, a formal greeting, well-organized body paragraphs, and a formal closing.

The text should be left-justified and double-spaced between paragraphs. Keep the length to one page.

Proofread the letter. Have someone else proofread for you. Edit, revise and repeat as necessary. Don’t ruin your first impression with a stupid mistake.

Cover Letter Tip 3

Try your best to address the cover letter to an actual person , rather than “Dear Hiring Manager” or “To Whom It May Concern.” Addressing the letter to a specific person makes it more personal, and more likely to be read than placed in a pile in the HR office (or worse, stashed in a computer file, and out of physical sight).

You may be able to find out the name of the person who will be reading your cover letter by checking the job posting, asking the person who told you about the position or contacting the company’s HR department.

Cover Letter Tip 4

To begin the body of your cover letter, the first paragraph should detail what position you are applying for and how you learned of the opportunity.

Briefly explain how your skills and background make you a qualified candidate for the position. Express your enthusiasm for the company and why you are interested in the position.

Cover Letter Tip 5

In the opening paragraph, don’t be afraid to mention someone you know at the company who may be able to act as a personal or professional reference, especially if you learned of the job opportunity through this person.

Be sure to ask your contact if it’s all right to drop his or her name in the letter, and if so, keep the explanation of your relationship concise (i.e. I learned of the opportunity through a former colleague John Doe, the current vice-president of communications) . This will allow your reader to contact the person for a reference if desired.

It always helps to know someone on the inside, and a good referral (with a solid resume and cover letter) often leads to an interview.

Cover Letter Tip 6

In the second paragraph, explain how you meet the required skills and qualifications of the position . Utilize the job description and company profile provided in the posting or by the person who informed you of the opportunity. Elaborate on points in your resume, but don’t be repetitive.

Some companies use software that searches for specific keywords within your cover letter (and resume) to discover the applicants with the most desired skills — and weed out those without them.

Reading the job posting carefully will allow you to pick and choose keywords and phrases used by the company, which will garner your cover letter more hits and improve the chances that a human being will read your letter, and not just a computer system.

Cover Letter Tip 7

Conclude the letter with a thank you and express your interest in hearing from the reader soon regarding the status of your application. Communicate the best way to reach you, by phone or email.

If you don’t like TNR, though, there are several other font choices that can make your letter more personalized, but these are restricted to conservative serif fonts like Cambria. How to Write a Cover Letter That Will Get You a Job

I’ve read thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of cover letters in my career. If you’re thinking that sounds like really boring reading, you’re right. What I can tell you from enduring that experience is that most cover letters are terrible — and not only that, but squandered opportunities. When a cover letter is done well, it can significantly increase your chances of getting an interview, but the vast majority fail that test.

So let’s talk about how to do cover letters right.

1. First, understand the point of a cover letter.

The whole idea of a cover letter is that it can help the employer see you as more than just your résumé. Managers generally aren’t hiring based solely on your work history; your experience is crucial, yes, but they’re also looking for someone who will be easy to work with, shows good judgment, communicates well, possesses strong critical thinking skills and a drive to get things done, complements their current team, and all the other things you yourself probably want from your co-workers. It’s tough to learn much about those things from job history alone, and that’s where your cover letter comes in.

2. Whatever you do, don’t just summarize your résumé.

The No. 1 mistake people make with cover letters is that they simply use them to summarize their résumé. This makes no sense — hiring managers don’t need a summary of your résumé! It’s on the very next page! They’re about to see it as soon as they scroll down. And if you think about it, your entire application is only a few pages (in most cases, a one- or two-page résumé and a one-page cover letter) — why would you squander one of those pages by repeating the content of the others? And yet, probably 95 percent of the cover letters I see don’t add anything new beyond the résumé itself (and that’s a conservative estimate).

Instead, your cover letter should go beyond your work history to talk about things that make you especially well-suited for the job. For example, if you’re applying for an assistant job that requires being highly organized and you neurotically track your household finances in a detailed, color-coded spreadsheet, most hiring managers would love to know that because it says something about the kind of attention to detail you’d bring to the job. That’s not something you could put on your résumé, but it can go in your cover letter.

Or maybe your last boss told you that you were the most accurate data processor she’d ever seen, or came to rely on you as her go-to person whenever a lightning-fast rewrite was needed. Maybe your co-workers called you “the client whisperer” because of your skill in calming upset clients. Maybe you’re regularly sought out by more senior staff to help problem-solve, or you find immense satisfaction in bringing order to chaos. Those sorts of details illustrate what you bring to the job in a different way than your résumé does, and they belong in your cover letter.

If you’re still stumped, pretend you’re writing an email to a friend about why you’d be great at the job. You probably wouldn’t do that by stiffly reciting your work history, right? You’d talk about what you’re good at and how you’d approach the work. That’s what you want here.

3. You don’t need a creative opening line.

If you think you need to open the letter with something creative or catchy, I am here to tell you that you don’t. Just be simple and straightforward:

• “I’m writing to apply for your X position.”

• “I’d love to be considered for your X position.”

• “I’m interested in your X position because …”

• “I’m excited to apply for your X position.”

That’s it! Straightforward is fine — better, even, if the alternative is sounding like an aggressive salesperson.

4. Show, don’t tell.

A lot of cover letters assert that the person who wrote it would excel at the job or announce that the applicant is a skillful engineer or a great communicator or all sorts of other subjective superlatives. That’s wasted space — the hiring manager has no reason to believe it, and so many candidates claim those things about themselves that most managers ignore that sort of self-assessment entirely. So instead of simply declaring that you’re great at X (whatever X is), your letter should demonstrate that. And the way you do that is by describing accomplishments and experiences that illustrate it.

Here’s a concrete example taken from one extraordinarily effective cover-letter makeover that I saw. The candidate had originally written, “I offer exceptional attention to detail, highly developed communication skills, and a talent for managing complex projects with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and multitask.” That’s pretty boring and not especially convincing, right? (This is also exactly how most people’s cover letters read.)

In her revised version, she wrote this instead:

“In addition to being flexible and responsive, I’m also a fanatic for details — particularly when it comes to presentation. One of my recent projects involved coordinating a 200-page grant proposal: I proofed and edited the narratives provided by the division head, formatted spreadsheets, and generally made sure that every line was letter-perfect and that the entire finished product conformed to the specific guidelines of the RFP. (The result? A five-year, $1.5 million grant award.) I believe in applying this same level of attention to detail to tasks as visible as prepping the materials for a top-level meeting and as mundane as making sure the copier never runs out of paper.”

That second version is so much more compelling and interesting — and makes me believe that she really is great with details.

5. If there’s anything unusual or confusing about your candidacy, address it in the letter.

Your cover letter is your chance to provide context for things that otherwise might seem confusing or less than ideal to a hiring manager. For example, if you’re overqualified for the position but are excited about it anyway, or if you’re a bit underqualified but have reason to think you could excel at the job, address that up front. Or if your background is in a different field but you’re actively working to move into this one, say so, talk about why, and explain how your experience will translate. Or if you’re applying for a job across the country from where you live because you’re hoping to relocate to be closer to your family, let them know that.

If you don’t provide that kind of context, it’s too easy for a hiring manager to decide you’re the wrong fit or applying to everything you see or don’t understand the job description and put you in the “no” pile. A cover letter gives you a chance to say, “No, wait — here’s why this could be a good match.”

6. Keep the tone warm and conversational.

While there are some industries that prize formal-sounding cover letters — like law — in most fields, yours will stand out if it’s warm and conversational. Aim for the tone you’d use if you were writing to a co-worker whom you liked a lot but didn’t know especially well. It’s okay to show some personality or even use humor; as long as you don’t go overboard, your letter will be stronger for it.

7. Don’t use a form letter.

You don’t need to write every cover letter completely from scratch, but if you’re not customizing it to each job, you’re doing it wrong. Form letters tend to read like form letters, and they waste the chance to speak to the specifics of what this employer is looking for and what it will take to thrive in this particular job.

If you’re applying for a lot of similar jobs, of course you’ll end up reusing language from one letter to the next. But you shouldn’t have a single cover letter that you wrote once and then use every time you apply; whatever you send should sound like you wrote it with the nuances of this one job in mind.

A good litmus test is this: Could you imagine other applicants for this job sending in the same letter? If so, that’s a sign that you haven’t made it individualized enough to you and are probably leaning too heavily on reciting your work history.

8. No, you don’t need to hunt down the hiring manager’s name.

If you read much job-search advice, at some point you’ll come across the idea that you need to do Woodward and Bernstein–level research to hunt down the hiring manager’s name in order to open your letter with “Dear Matilda Jones.” You don’t need to do this; no reasonable hiring manager will care. If the name is easily available, by all means, feel free to use it, but otherwise “Dear Hiring Manager” is absolutely fine. Take the hour you just freed up and do something more enjoyable with it.

9. Keep it under one page.

If your cover letters are longer than a page, you’re writing too much, and you risk annoying hiring managers who are likely sifting through hundreds of applications and don’t have time to read lengthy tomes. On the other hand, if you only write one paragraph, it’s unlikely that you’re making a compelling case for yourself as a candidate — not impossible, but unlikely. For most people, something close to a page is about right.

10. Don’t agonize over the small details.

What matters most about your cover letter is its content. You should of course ensure that it’s well-written and thoroughly proofread, but many job seekers agonize over elements of the letter that really don’t matter. I get tons of  questions from job seekers  about whether they should attach their cover letter or put it in the body of the email (answer: No one cares, but attaching it makes it easier to share and will preserve your formatting), or what to name the file (again, no one really cares as long as it’s reasonably professional, but when people are dealing with hundreds of files named “resume,” it’s courteous to name it with your full name).

Approaching your cover letter like this can make a huge difference in your job search. It can be the thing that moves your application from the “maybe” pile (or even the “no” pile) to the “yes” pile. Of course, writing cover letters like this will take more time than sending out the same templated letter summarizing your résumé — but 10 personalized, compelling cover letters are likely to get you more  interview invitations  than 50 generic ones will.

Reviewing information from the above sources, highlight anything that sparks your curiosity. Jot down a related question to ask during the interview.

For example, say you’re interviewing for an outside sales job. Through your research, you find a press release announcing that the company is working on an innovative new product category. But it’s unclear when the product will be officially launched or available to customers. You could ask:

  • I was intrigued to learn your team will be selling the [name] product class soon. Do you know when your company’s version will be hitting the market?

In addition to your research-backed questions, ask about an employer’s overall work culture and goals. This is often a great line of questioning toward the end of the interview. It places the job in context and shows you’re invested in the overall success of an organization. Also, it lets the interviewer give you more of their personal perspective, taking the conversation beyond the scope of detail in the job posting. Consider asking one or more of these questions:

  • How would you describe the company’s work culture?
  • Why do people enjoy working here? Why do you personally like working here?
  • How does the organization define success and evaluate employee performance?
  • What is the company’s core mission, and why? Do certain values or principles inform that mission?
  • How does the company define or distinguish itself from competitors?
  • What is the company’s overall strategy for staff training and professional development?
  • How does the organization incorporate ideas and requests from employees at different levels?
  • Does the company have a particular method for new product development and project management?
  • What is the management team’s leadership approach or philosophy?
  • How has the organization evolved during your tenure? What broad changes have you seen?
  • Where do you see the company headed in the short and long term? Are there broad changes underway that would affect my position?

If some of these questions seem forward, remember the basic purpose of a job interview: to figure out if you and the hiring company are a good fit. So you’ll need to answer the interviewer’s questions about your background. But it also means the interviewer will need to answer your questions about what it’s like to work there. Only by this two-way understanding can you each make a decision in everyone’s best interest.

Before each interview, jot down any remaining questions you have on the job itself. These will help you fill any information gaps on the job posting, giving you a clear sense of what the role entails. For example:

  • What does a typical workday look like for this position? Is there wide variation or a strong sense of routine?
  • What is the biggest or most frequent challenge for this position?
  • How is success in the position measured? What performance metrics are most closely evaluated by management?
  • Does the workflow tend to fluctuate annually or seasonally?
  • What is the expected or required ratio of time working at the office versus from home? (Note: When asking this question, emphasize your flexibility for different work schedules.)
  • Who does the position report to directly and indirectly? What is the expected level of contact or collaboration?
  • Is the role more independent or collaborative? If the latter, which team members or departments would I partner with most?

Always view these questions in light of your research and frame them accordingly. Below are two examples of how you could phrase a question in the context of research you’ve done:

  • In looking over your corporate website, I was struck by your expansion to five new markets in the past three years. Is that the biggest change in your time with the company so far?
  • I saw on the careers page that your company has a quarterly plan for formal staff training and development. Can you tell me more about how this plan works and how it applies to this department’s schedule?

At the end of your interview, inquire about next steps in the hiring process. Questions in this vein may include:

  • What is the timeframe for the next stage of hiring? If I’m selected, would there be another round of interviews?
  • Should I plan on hearing from you directly or from someone else once a decision has been made?
  • Should I expect to hear by phone or email? (But emphasize you’re flexible in this regard. Confirm the interviewer has your right contact information and knows the best times to reach you.)

What if the interviewer already answered most of my questions? -

Tell them so. When the interviewer asks if you have any questions for them, say something like, “I had some areas I was hoping to clarify, but we’ve covered most of them.” This type of comment is a courteous way to show the interviewer you were listening and the information they shared was helpful.

How can I deepen the interview discussion? -

Any question you ask is a yes/no, who, what, when, where, why, or how. Keep in mind “why” and “how” tend to open and enrich a conversation, while the others usually just provide facts and context.

For example, you could ask the interviewer when and where the company started. But when they answer plainly (“I believe the company was founded in Buffalo in the mid-1970s.”), the conversation may seem at a dead end. A more interesting way to learn from and engage with the interviewer is to ask them how the company has grown or evolved or why it’s been successful in its market.

What questions should I avoid asking? -

How to write a cover letter that gets you a job interview.

The point of a cover letter is to help a recruiter or hiring manager get to know you a bit better. Think of your resume as an outline of your career, and the cover letter as the description. A cover letter offers your future employer a deeper insight into who you are beyond your work history and credentials. It complements your resume and allows you to elaborate on your expertise, skills, and strengths. When you write a strong cover letter, you’re showing your future employer that you’re the person they’re looking for. Let’s take a look at what you need to do to write a strong cover letter.

Don’t reiterate your entire resume.

You want to include highlights from your resume that are the most relevant to the position you’re applying to, not recap your entire work history. The cover letter is the place to showcase your best strengths and elaborate on the work skills you’ve listed on your resume.

Use specific figures to quantify results.

Whenever possible, use specific figures when you’re talking about your accomplishments. Quantifiable results are much more powerful than broad statements. When talking about results you should include a percentage, a timeframe, and an action. For example, ‘Increased sales by 28% in six months by installing and using a new database and client management system.’

Include examples.

Just like adding quantifiers, examples make a much greater impact. Don’t just say that you are great at data management, illustrate it. Elaborate on how you use your data management skills and the results that you’ve achieved by using those skills. The point isn’t to just say that you’re good at something, it’s to show how you’re good at it.

Highlight your soft skills.

Soft skills such as communication, problem solving, and creative thinking are extremely valuable and desirable to employers. These soft skills are harder to highlight in your resume, so the cover letter is the place for you to showcase them. Mention the skills that are your strengths in your cover letter and use examples to back them up.

Explain gaps in your work history.

Your cover letter can provide a deeper insight into your job history. If you have gaps in your work history, you can offer a brief explanation why. If you went back to school, explain that you made that choice to gain deeper knowledge. If you were away from the workforce for an extended period of time, explain the real-world skills you learned in that time that are relevant to the position you’re applying to. Keep this brief, your cover letter shouldn’t be a biography.

Match the tone of your writing to the company culture.

If you’re applying to a corporate job, your cover letter should be more formal than if you’re applying to a startup. Get a feel for the company culture by reading the tone of the job posting and researching the company online. Match the level of formality of the job to the formality of your cover letter. It’s a subtle way to show the person reading it that you’ve done your homework and you understand what they’re looking for.

Personalize it.

Your cover letter should be addressed to the hiring manager by name whenever possible. If it’s not readily available, a few minutes of googling or searching LinkedIn should uncover it. If you can’t find it, then address the cover letter to ‘Hiring Manager at (name of company)’.

Customize it.

There’s nothing worse than a cover letter that’s clearly been copy and pasted without any customization to the job you’re applying to. To save yourself time, create or use a form or template to use as an outline that you can customize. Make sure to include the position your applying for as well as the name of the company. Use bullet points from the job application to highlight your relevant skills or experience.

Use spell check and grammar check.

There’s no excuse to send a cover letter, or any document for that matter, that has spelling and grammatical errors. Running spell check takes 30 seconds, so make it a habit to run it before you send both your cover letter and your resume.

Even if a cover letter isn’t required, it’s worth submitting one anyway. There’s no harm in sending over an extra attachment, and it might even help boost your chances of getting an interview. If nothing else, it’s practice in pitching your strengths, a skill you can use in your job interviews.

5 essential tips for interviewers

A company’s success is closely tied to the quality of its employees, but a flawed interview process can disrupt this balance and undermine overall performance. JR Keller, associate professor of human resource studies at the Cornell ILR School, identified five key strategies to conduct better interviews that lead to more effective hiring.

1. Reduce the candidate’s anxiety.

According to a 2020 survey conducted by JDP, 93% of Americans reported experiencing interview-related anxiety, with 29% ranking interviews more nerve-wracking than a first date or doctor appointment. To ease this tension, Keller recommends clearly communicating with a job applicant well before their interview.

Disclosing who will participate in the interview is beneficial as it allows interviewees to look up their interviewer on LinkedIn. Likewise, telling prospective employees the interview timeframe and whether it will be in person, over the phone or on a platform such as Zoom helps them prepare better and manage their expectations.
