Research Associate in Cathode Development for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries
Imperial college london - department of chemical engineering.
Location: South Kensington
About the role:
The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Research Associate to join the second phase of the Faraday Institution’s LiSTAR project on cathode development for lithium-sulfur batteries. The project involves multiple research groups across different universities and presents a unique opportunity to contribute to the exciting work of the Faraday Institution which aims to place the UK at the forefront of the global battery revolution.
Compared with Li-ion batteries, Li-S cells store more energy per unit weight and can operate in a wider operating temperature range. They may also offer safety and cost improvements. Yet the widespread use of Li-S faces major hurdles, which stem from sulfur’s insulating nature, migration of discharge products leading to the loss of active material, and degradation of the metallic lithium anode. Scientists and engineers need to know more about how the system performs and degrades in order to overcome current limitations in the power density and lifespan of Li-S cells that could unlock their use.
What you would be doing:
In this project, you will work on the development of effective sulfur cathode scaffolds for lithium-sulfur batteries, based on electrospun carbon materials and novel S/C composites, supported by modelling and characterisation efforts from the other work packages. The project combines fundamental research at material and cell level, with a view to supporting scaling up to ensure the work conducted has the potential for direct industrial impact. Your tasks will involve materials synthesis and electrode design, surface and structural characterisation of the materials, and electrochemical testing of these systems in coin and pouch cell configurations. Additionally, in situ characterisation techniques will be employed to investigate the sulfur conversion mechanisms, evolving interfaces, and degradation occurring inside the cell to enable optimisation of materials and cell configurations. The best performing materials will be combined with the anodes and electrolytes developed across other work packages for further optimisation.
What we are looking for:
- A first degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline, and a PhD (or equivalent) in a similar field.
- Good theoretical knowledge and practical experience of materials synthesis, materials characterisation, and electrochemistry preferably related to batteries or electrocatalysis.
- The ability to work in a large and diverse team collaboratively across departments, faculties & universities.
- Good communication skills & the ability to write high quality publications.
What we can offer you:
- The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity
- The opportunity to be part of a multidisciplinary, multiuniversity diverse consortium and be part of the Faraday Institution
- Benefit from sector-leading salary & remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes)
- Get access to a range of workplace benefits including a flexible working policy from day 1, generous family leave packages, on-site leisure facilities & a cycle-to-work scheme
- Interest-free season ticket loan schemes for travel
- Be part of a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work culture with various staff networks & resources designed to support your personal and professional wellbeing .

The position will be based in the Engineering Department at King’s College London. The recently re-founded Department is rapidly expanding into a world-class research and teaching department. It consists of new state-of-the-art lab facilities located in the heart of London. We are a dynamic Department with a diverse team of academics, PDRAs, and PhDs.
About the role
This position is set within a growing research initiative supported by the prestigious UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, focusing on the development of sustainable aluminium-ion batteries. The aim is to develop innovative, high-performance cathode materials for non-aqueous aluminium-ion batteries and to explore their underlying reaction mechanisms.
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher passionate about materials science and its application to energy storage devices. The work will involve the design, synthesis, and characterisation of novel inorganic materials. Synthesis methods will include mainly solid-state and solvothermal syntheses. Characterisation techniques will include X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemical analysis. Advanced in-operando and ex-situ methods will be employed to gain a fundamental understanding of the structure-properties-performance relationship of the developed materials.
You will be part of a dynamic, diverse, and growing research team with a strong focus on creating a positive and collegial group culture. We maintain strong partnerships with researchers both in the UK and internationally, and we are looking for a candidate who is excited about working in a team and willing to travel for collaborative research visits.
We place a strong focus on career development, offering opportunities for conference participation and skills development. You will also have the opportunity to mentor PhD, MSc, and undergraduate students working in the group.
This is a full time post (35 hours) per week, offered on a fixed term contract for 42 months.
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
1. PhD (awarded or near completion) in Materials Science or Chemistry or equivalent research experience in an academic or commercial setting
2. Strong background and significant experience in the synthesis of inorganic materials (preferably in the context of energy storage, though not required)
3. Strong experience in materials characterisation, especially structural characterisation using X-ray diffraction (XRD), XRD data analysis, and structure refinement
4. Experience in electrochemical characterisation and related data analysis
5. Exposure to microstructural characterisation techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy combined with elemental mapping
6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage deadlines, and organise work effectively
7. Proficiency in English with strong communication skills (oral and written), including the ability to write research reports and academic papers
Desirable criteria
1. Exposure to in-operando and ex-situ characterisation methods
2. Exposure to crystallographic structure determination of unreported materials
* Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.

The department of economics weekly seminar series invites speakers to present their current research across all fields of economics.
Professor Andrew Wait from the University of Sydney will speak about his research on the effects of workplace pressures on depression.
Professor Wait’s research interests include industrial organisation and organisational economics.
He is the co-convenor of the Annual Organisational Economics Workshop. He has recently published his work in journals such as the J ournal of Economic Behaviour and Organisation , Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control , and Games and Economic Behaviour .
Speaker: Professor Andrew Wait, University of Sydney
Depression is the third leading cause of disability.
The established and influential job-demand-control literature finds a strong relationship between an employee’s control over their work (autonomy), the demands of the job and negative health outcomes such as depression.
However, previous studies have neglected possible endogeneity. We utilise both fixed effects (FE) and instrumental variables to control for unobserved factors.
Establishment-level FE control for management quality, practices, culture, and other characteristics.
Using changes in job design caused by the Great Recession as instruments, we find that the negative impact of job demands on depression has been significantly underestimated, as have the benefits of increasing employee autonomy.
Their three-equation system jointly accounts for endogeneity of job demands and autonomy. Moreover, the interaction of these two endogenous variables suggests that greater autonomy lessens the impact of job demands on depression.
Their results suggest the need for the reorganisation of work is much greater than previously believed as the benefits to employee mental health are an order of magnitude larger.
