5 Tips to Apply for Online Jobs

To make sure you land the online job of your dreams, you’ve got to prove to the hiring manager that you’re just the candidate they’re looking for.

Here are our best tips on how to apply and land that online job you’ve got your eye on:

  • Figure out your transferable skills. Working online requires a distinct set of skills (such as time management, work ethic, and self-motivation). If you’ve never worked online before but have acquired these skills through a previous job, make sure to highlight them in your resume’s skills section !
  • Update your resume. Speaking of resumes, make sure you apply with a remote job resume . There are some differences between conventional resumes and remote job resumes, and not paying attention to them may harm your chances of getting hired.
  • Update your profile on professional networking sites. If you’re using LinkedIn or other professional networking sites to look and apply for online jobs, it wouldn’t harm to also update your profile to reflect that.
  • Get certified. Extra certifications are a great way to stand out from the crowd. So, look up courses related to the online job you want to apply for, earn the certification, and show it off on your resume!
  • Use a resume template . Most employers use Applicant Tracking Systems to effectively sort out the hundreds of resumes they receive. This means that if your resume isn’t ATS-optimized, it might not even get read. To solve this, you can use one of our tried-and-tested resume templates, which are built for the world’s most used ATS.

  • Blogging. If you’re good at blogging, you can make money from sponsorships, ads, or affiliate marketing. The same applies if you have a popular YouTube channel or podcast.
  • Design (bags, cups, T-shirts). There are plenty of websites out there selling custom T-shirts, bags, and other items. You can submit your own designs and make money from selling them.
  • E-commerce. In 2022, creating your own online store is easier than ever. All you have to do is register on Etsy or Shopify, source products, and you’ll be in business within weeks.
  • Photography. There are many types of photography that you can do remotely and then sell online, from food photography and commercial product photo shoots to interior design photography.
  • Event planning. Become a remote event planner to organize parties, weddings, or bachelor parties using just your computer and your impeccable organizational skills.

How to Tell If an Online Job is a Scam

Unfortunately, not every online job out there is legitimate.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, Americans were scammed out of $68 million due to fake business and job opportunities in the first quarter of 2022.

Job scams come in all shapes and sizes, some of the most common ones including:

  • Fake e-mailed job offers
  • Fake jobs on social media
  • Fake employment or recruitment websites

And while these sketchy job offers may seem appealing at a glance (think, claiming they pay $100 a day, no previous experience needed), they’re usually out for two things - stealing your money or your personal information .

Here’s a quick checklist on how to avoid job scams :

  • Is it too good to be true? Jobs that promise a great salary or other job perks for little-to-no work experience are, in 99.9% of cases, a scam.
  • Is the company legitimate? If your potential employer doesn’t have an online presence (a website, social media channels, or an official company email), then the job offer is almost always a scam.
  • Do they ask for a “one-time fee”? If the employer asks you to pay money to get trained (or to buy the equipment for the job), that’s a HUGE red flag.
  • Is it a multi-level marketing scheme (MLM)? If your job involves buying a product and then reselling it to someone you know, then the job is probably a multi-level marketing scheme and should be avoided at all costs.
  • Does it involve getting rich from trading? Many scammy jobs promise to make you rich from trading or learning how to trade, if only you pay them a one-time, generous training fee.

Pros and Cons of Online Jobs

With all the hype about remote work out there, it can be hard to stay objective about the advantages and disadvantages that come with it.

Here’s a quick look at whether the pros of online jobs outweigh the cons to help you decide whether getting one is the right choice for YOU:

  • Online jobs offer employees more freedom and flexibility.
  • An online job allows you to work from anywhere that works for you, be it your home, a coworking space, a coffee shop, etc.
  • Remote work statistics show that employees who work online are overall more productive.
  • Online jobs are beneficial for stay-at-home parents , introverts, digital nomads, and people in creative industries, as they don’t tie you to the office from 9 to 5 on a daily basis.
  • Online jobs make it easier to save money, considering you spend less on commuting, business lunches, updating your professional wardrobe, etc.
  • Online jobs require high levels of self-motivation and concentration, which can be hard to achieve for people who have trouble staying motivated.
  • When you’re working online you don’t get to see your coworkers as much, which can cause you to feel lonely and isolated.
  • Working online also minimizes collaboration among employees and the transfer of knowledge within a team.

FAQs on Online Jobs

Do you still have some questions about online jobs? We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions on the topic to clear out any confusion:

Do online jobs really pay?

Absolutely! As long as the job is not a scam , you’ll get paid just as you would for any office job.

The pay rate typically depends on the industry (e.g. engineering jobs today pay more than, say, journalism) and the position (senior level versus entry-level), as well as on what you bring to the table with your skills and experience.

Can online jobs be trusted?

Yes, the majority of online jobs can be trusted.

As a rule of thumb, if the position doesn’t require that you pay them a one-time fee, doesn’t promise hefty pay for no experience, or doesn’t guarantee it’ll make you rich from trading, chances are you can trust it.

What online jobs can I do as a student?

The best online jobs for students offer flexible schedules and require little-to-no experience. For example, you can work as an online tutor, search engine evaluator, transcriptionist, content editor, or virtual assistant.

Which online jobs are in demand?

The 10 most in-demand online positions for 2022 are customer service representative, VA, certified nurse, software developer, digital marketing specialist, tutor, computer systems analyst,  graphic designer, web developer, and information security analyst.

And that’s a wrap on online jobs!

Thanks for reading our article. Hopefully, we’ve armed you with all the knowledge you need to start applying for online jobs.

Now back to you - it’s time to brush up on your resume and start looking for your next remote role!

What Does It Mean to be a Freelancer?

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a way out of your current job or want to be in control of your time and schedule, then you may just be destined for the freelance life.

It looks like a big city with very little visial info avaliable for foreigners

i looked for over two years, and never found one in english. i did find several in russian, and when i was there, i bought street maps, but also in russian. this was closed city until 1995, so i am not sure they wanted any maps.

Where can I find an online street map of Vladivostok, either in English or Russian? I just want to have a look in order to book a hotel!

You can get a good pocket map at the Versailles Hotel or there is a little book store next to the Baskin Robbins downtown that has the same English pocket map.

Dozens of anime piracy websites have gone dark this week. Fans are in mourning

Internet pirates took another hit this week as dozens of anime piracy websites — including the popular Aniwave site — suddenly went dark.

Fans were in mourning after the sites went down Tuesday night.

“Not going to lie I shed a tear seeing this,” one Reddit user commented on an r/Piracy post discussing the takedown.

Thousands of animated series and movies from Japan are available to stream online, but copyright infringement also is rife, with some anime fans arguing that paid streaming services just don’t cut it.

Aniwave’s website Wednesday carried the message: “Creating better products that provide an improved user experience and fostering competition to drive the market to enhance products is something we are very happy about. Now that everything has improved ... it is also time for us to say goodbye.” With it, on the basic white screen, was an embedded YouTube video of Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again.”

Slipknot rocker Sid Wilson detailed the fiery explosion that he said ‘melted’ his face off last week and sent him to an Iowa hospital and burn center.

Aug. 28, 2024

“If possible, please use legal paid services. It’s something we should do to show respect for our creators and content producers. Good bye!”

The end of the message matched those on piracy websites that have been shuttered by the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment, an anti-piracy coalition associated with the Motion Picture Assn. The coalition represents more than 50 media and entertainment companies including HBO, Hulu, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Disney and Netflix.

The coalition announced it was behind the takedown Thursday, calling the Hanoi-based group running Fmoviesz.to the largest piracy ring in the world.

The suite of websites, which included Aniwave, fmovies, movies7, myflixer, bflixz and others, were visited more than 6.7 billion times between January 2023 and June 2024, the release said, and drew 374 million views per month. The takedown affected hundreds of piracy websites run by the same suspects, the organization said.

Earlier this month, ACE also took down the anime streaming website AnimeFlix. The site, based in Finland, garnered from 7 million to 13 million monthly visits, with 2 million unique visitors a month, the coalition said. The website resembled legitimate streaming services, ACE said, “allowing users to set up accounts, tag favorite content and create content collections.”

“There is no justification for copyright infringement,” Larissa Knapp, chief content protection officer at the Motion Picture Assn., said in a release on the legal action. “Whenever films or TV shows are pirated, it’s not just content owners or studios that are affected — it’s also the people who work as writers, storyboard artists, illustrators, editors, sound mixers and more.”

Online piracy is connected to the loss of 71,000 jobs and $12.5 billion annually in the U.S. economy, according to research from nonprofits in the marketing and internet safety industries. Accessing piracy websites can put consumers at risk of malware attacks from clickable ads that could steal personal data off your devices, according to a report from the Digital Citizens Alliance, a consumer-focused internet safety group.

Streaming sites make up about half of the pirated content on the internet, it reports, and revenue losses from piracy went up 500% between 2014 and 2022.

The typical consumer who pirates is a normal person who already pays for subscriptions but can’t find what they’re looking for on their existing services, said Ken Leonardo, senior vice president of marketing at the Cable and Telecommunications Assn. for Marketing.

“It’s not just the young folks in college,” Leonardo told The Times, but people trying to top off their paid services. “It’s an issue of economics,” he said, when people have too many services and don’t want to pay for another one to watch a specific show. Other times, pirates are unwitting consumers who don’t know they’re putting themselves at risk when they stream illegally, he said.

Piracy is a federal crime, and it is illegal to duplicate or distribute copyrighted work without permission, especially for commercial advantage or private financial gain. Consumers are not typically targeted with criminal or civil penalties, but the people who run the websites can be.

But the knowing consumers of sites like Aniwave — pirates — say they aren’t drawn to such websites just because they are free. They like the wide selection of shows on illegal ports, as opposed to the fragmentation of options on legitimate sites such as Netflix and Crunchyroll, they say.

One Reddit user said to “mark my words; I will go down with piracy before I pay $20 a month to a website that only has 10 good shows.”

Another user, who said they had been using Aniwave since 2016, said the user interface and website features were better than those on paid streaming services.

Others urged users to stop posting illegal websites that were not taken down in the sweep, suggesting the subreddit was being watched and posting links would lead to working piracy websites being taken down too.

“LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS!” one person wrote.

Others were confident copycat sites would pop up soon.

Crunchyroll, a legal streaming service specifically for anime, has memberships that start at $7.99 a month.

Social Security Matters

Social security administration announces new efforts to simplify ssi applications.

August 27, 2024 • By Nate Osburn, Deputy Commissioner, Office of Communications

Last Updated: August 27, 2024

Social Security Administration Logo

The initial step – known as iClaim expansion – aims to establish a fully online, simplified iClaim application that leverages user-tested, plain-language questions, prepopulated answers where possible, seamless step-by-step transitions, and more. The online application aims to reduce the time spent applying as well as the processing time for initial claim decisions.

“Over the past year, we have asked many applicants and advocates – as well as our workforce – how we could make the SSI application process easier and simpler. Now, we are taking an important first step to do just that,” said Martin O’Malley, Commissioner of Social Security.

“People in our communities who need this crucial safety net deserve the dignity of an application process that is less burdensome and more accessible than what we now have, and we’re committed to achieving that vision over the next few years.”

The rollout of the iClaim expansion will generally be available to first-time applicants between 18 and almost 65 who never married and are concurrently applying for Social Security benefits and SSI. A goal of the second phase – currently targeted for late 2025 – is to expand this to all applicants.

The Federal Register Notice that supports this effort was published today and reflects changes based on what Social Security previously received. To read it, please visit Federal Register: Agency Information Collection Activities: Proposed Request .

Subsequent SSI simplification steps will incorporate lessons learned from the iClaim expansion into in-person, phone, mobile, and paper-based processes for SSI applications. As part of that, the agency plans to develop a separate simplified child SSI application.

All of these efforts will support and streamline the way Social Security’s staff technicians and applicants work together, providing an applicant journey that reflects continuous feedback gathered from the agency’s Customer Experience team, particularly from underserved communities.

The assets limit rule for SSI needs to be increased. It was set in 1962 when SSI was created to $2,000 and this is a hardship to those on SSI. Those on SSI who work are only allowed to earn $65 a week and that needs to be raised too. That was also set decades ago and is not practical or realistic. A person on SSI who only gets $1,200 a month (combined SSA +SSI) cannot live on that unless they are in subsidized housing and there is not enough subsidized housing for all those who need it. So serious reforms need to be done to raise the limits of what people can earn and what people can save who are on SSI.

Question: If you are going to receive insurance claim benefit from your parent passing away, does social security receive this or part of this?

I’m only receiving retirement benefits from ssa

August 29, 2024 2:39PM

Susie, your Social Security benefits won’t be affected by the life insurance payout from your parents passing. Social Security doesn’t take any of the life insurance money. That money is paid directly to you as the beneficiary.

Life insurance payouts aren’t considered income as far as Social Security is concerned. And since you only get retirement benefits from Social Security, getting life insurance money won’t change that at all. The life insurance money also isn’t taxable income or counted as earnings that could impact your Social Security.

You can go ahead and claim the life insurance without it messing with your regular Social Security checks. Everything will keep coming in as usual for your retirement benefits. The life insurance payout won’t cause any deductions or changes to what Social Security sends you each month.

Trump Reposts Crude Sexual Remark About Harris on Truth Social

Though the former president has a history of making crass insults about opponents, the reposts signal his willingness to continue to shatter longstanding political norms.

Former President Donald J. Trump framed by American flags.

By Michael Gold

  • Aug. 28, 2024

Former President Donald J. Trump used his social-media website on Wednesday to amplify a crude remark about Vice President Kamala Harris that suggested Ms. Harris traded sexual favors to help her political career.

The post, by another user on Truth Social, was an image of Ms. Harris and Hillary Clinton, Mr. Trump’s opponent in 2016. The text read: “Funny how blowjobs impacted both their careers differently…”

The remark was a reference to Mrs. Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, and the Monica Lewinsky scandal, and a right-wing contention that Ms. Harris’s romantic relationship with Willie Brown, the former mayor of San Francisco whom she dated in the mid-1990s while he was speaker of the California State Assembly, fueled her political rise.

Mr. Trump’s repost was the second time in 10 days that the former president shared content from his personal account making sexually oriented attacks on Ms. Harris. Though he has a history of making crass insults about his opponents, the reposts signal Mr. Trump’s willingness to continue to shatter longstanding norms of political speech.

The image Mr. Trump shared on Wednesday morning was another user’s screenshot of a post on X, and it was a reply to an unrelated video clip Mr. Trump had posted on Tuesday night.

Mr. Trump reposted the image as part of a series of 30 reposts he made on Truth Social between 8:02 and 8:32 a.m. on Wednesday, including several posts with references to the QAnon conspiracy theory movement and its slogan. Mr. Trump also reposted photos that called for the prosecution or imprisoning of top Democrats and members of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The former president has vowed to direct federal prosecutors to investigate his political enemies if elected.

Ohio County Man Indicted in Romance Scam

WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA – Eugene Robert LeClear, age 52, of Wheeling, West Virginia, has been indicted for allegedly defrauding a woman he met online, announced United States Attorney William Ihlenfeld.

Court documents indicate that LeClear began an online relationship with the victim in 2022. LeClear began requesting money from her under the guise that he needed money to pay for medical expenses and to post bond in a criminal action, among other false pretenses. LeClear promised to reimburse the victim and falsely represented he had access to millions of dollars from gambling winnings and prior criminal activity. The victim lost approximately $96,000 from the scheme.

“Romance scammers are expert manipulators who develop relationships that feel very real,” said U.S. Attorney Ihlenfeld. “Victims are understandably reluctant to come forward because they are embarrassed, but we hope they still will so that action can be taken to prevent others from being harmed.”

LeClear was charged with five counts of wire fraud and faces up to 20 years in federal prison for each count. If convicted, a federal district court judge would determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jarod Douglas is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

If you have any information you wish to report regarding LeClear, please contact the FBI via email at [email protected] .

An indictment is merely an allegation, and each defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Crowdfunding distributions may be includible in the gross income of the person receiving them depending on the facts and circumstances. The crowdfunding website or its payment processor may be required to report distributions of money raised if the amount distributed meets certain reporting thresholds.

Here are some important basics to keep in mind.

Crowdfunding is a method of raising money through websites by soliciting contributions from a large number of people. The contributions may be solicited to fund businesses, for charitable donations or for gifts. In some cases, the money raised through crowdfunding is solicited by crowdfunding organizers on behalf of other people or businesses. In other cases, people establish crowdfunding campaigns to raise money for themselves or their businesses.

Receipt of a Form 1099-K for distributions of money raised through crowdfunding

The crowdfunding website or its payment processor may be required to report distributions of money raised, if the amount distributed meets certain reporting thresholds, by filing Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions , with the IRS.

If required to file a Form 1099-K with the IRS, the crowdfunding website or its payment processor must also furnish a copy of that form to the person to whom the distributions are made. The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) clarifies that the crowdfunding website or its payment processor is not required to file Form 1099-K with the IRS or furnish it to the person to whom the distributions are made if the payments are not made in exchange for goods or services.

The reporting thresholds for a crowdfunding website or payment processor to file and furnish Form 1099-K are:

  • Calendar years 2023 and prior – Form 1099-K is required if the total of all payments distributed to a person exceeded $20,000 and resulted from more than 200 transactions. See   Notice 2023-10   and Notice 2023-74 .
  • Calendar year 2024 – The IRS announced a plan for the threshold to be reduced to $5,000 as a phase-in for the lower threshold provided under the ARPA. See IR-2023-221 .

Note : The ARPA lowered the reporting threshold for third party settlement organizations (TPSOs) so that TPSOs are only required to report on Forms 1099-K if the total of all payments distributed to a payee in a calendar year exceeds $600, regardless of the number of transactions. However, implementation of this lower threshold has been delayed.

Crowdfunding distributions may be made to the crowdfunding organizer, or directly to individuals or businesses for whom the organizer solicited funds. A Form 1099-K must be filed with the IRS and furnished to the person or entity that received the payments if the reporting threshold is met for the year in which the distributions were made.

A person receiving a Form 1099-K for distributions of money raised through crowdfunding may not recognize the filer's name on the form. Sometimes the payment processor used by the crowdfunding website, rather than the crowdfunding website itself, will furnish the Form 1099-K and will be listed as the filer on the form. If the recipient of a Form 1099-K does not recognize the filer's name or the amounts included on the Form 1099-K, the recipient can use the filer's telephone number listed on the form to contact a person knowledgeable about the payments reported.

Box 1 on the Form 1099-K will show the gross amount of the distributions made to a person during the calendar year. But the furnishing of a Form 1099-K doesn't automatically mean the amount reported on the form is taxable to the person receiving the form.

If non-taxable distributions are reported on Form 1099-K, the recipient should report the transaction on Form 1040, Schedule 1, as follows:

  • Part I – Line 8z, Other Income – “Form 1099-K Received for Non-Taxable Crowdfunding Distributions” to show the gross proceeds from the distributions reported on Form 1099-K.
  • Part II – Line 24z, Other Adjustments – “Form 1099-K Received for Non-Taxable Crowdfunding Distributions” to show the non-taxable amount of the distributions reported on Form 1099-K.

The net effect of these two adjustments on income is $0.

Alternatively, if non-taxable distributions are reported on Form 1099-K and the recipient does not report the transaction on their tax return, the IRS may contact the recipient for more information. The recipient will have the opportunity to explain why the crowdfunding distributions were not reported on their tax return. As discussed below, the income tax consequences depend on all the facts and circumstances.

Tax treatment of money raised through crowdfunding

Under federal tax law, gross income includes all income from whatever source derived unless it is specifically excluded from gross income by law. Whether crowdfunding distributions are includible in the gross income of the person receiving them depends on all the facts and circumstances of the distribution.

In most cases, property received as a gift is not includible in the gross income of the person receiving the gift.

If crowdfunding contributions are made as a result of the contributors' detached and disinterested generosity, and without the contributors receiving or expecting to receive anything in return, the amounts may be gifts and therefore may not be includible in the gross income of those for whom the campaign was organized. Contributions to crowdfunding campaigns are not necessarily a result of detached and disinterested generosity, and therefore may not be gifts. Additionally, contributions to crowdfunding campaigns by an employer to, or for the benefit of, an employee are generally includible in the employee's gross income.

If a crowdfunding organizer solicits contributions on behalf of others, distributions of the money raised to the organizer may not be includible in the organizer's gross income if the organizer further distributes the money raised to those for whom the crowdfunding campaign was organized.

More information is available to help taxpayers determine what their tax obligations are in connection with their Form 1099-K at Understanding your Form 1099-K . Taxpayers may want to consult a trusted tax professional for information and advice regarding how to treat amounts received from crowdfunding campaigns.

Recordkeeping for money raised through crowdfunding

Crowdfunding organizers and any person receiving amounts from crowdfunding should keep complete and accurate records of all facts and circumstances surrounding the fundraising and disposition of funds for at least three years.

Gross Domestic Product (Second Estimate), Corporate Profits (Preliminary Estimate), Second Quarter 2024

  • News Release
  • Related Materials
  • Additional Information

Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 3.0 percent in the second quarter of 2024 (table 1), according to the "second" estimate released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 1.4 percent.

The GDP estimate released today is based on more complete source data than were available for the "advance" estimate issued last month.  In the advance estimate, the increase in real GDP was 2.8 percent. The update primarily reflected an upward revision to consumer spending (refer to "Updates to GDP").

Real GDP: Percent change from preceding quarter

The increase in real GDP primarily reflected increases in consumer spending, private inventory investment, and nonresidential fixed investment. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, increased (table 2).

Compared to the first quarter, the acceleration in real GDP in the second quarter primarily reflected an upturn in private inventory investment and an acceleration in consumer spending. These movements were partly offset by a downturn in residential fixed investment.

Current‑dollar GDP increased 5.5 percent at an annual rate, or $383.2 billion, in the second quarter to a level of $28.65 trillion, an upward revision of $23.2 billion from the previous estimate (tables 1 and 3). More information on the source data that underlie the estimates is available in the " Key Source Data and Assumptions " file on BEA's website.

The price index for gross domestic purchases increased 2.4 percent in the second quarter, an upward revision of 0.1 percentage point from the previous estimate. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index increased 2.5 percent, a downward revision of 0.1 percentage point. Excluding food and energy prices, the PCE price index increased 2.8 percent, a downward revision of 0.1 percentage point.

Personal Income

Current-dollar personal income increased $233.6 billion in the second quarter, a downward revision of $4.0 billion from the previous estimate. The increase primarily reflected increases in compensation and personal current transfer receipts (table 8).

Disposable personal income increased $183.0 billion, or 3.6 percent, in the second quarter, a downward revision of $3.2 billion from the previous estimate. Real disposable personal income increased 1.0 percent, unrevised from the prior estimate.

Personal saving was $686.4 billion in the second quarter, a downward revision of $34.1 billion from the previous estimate. The personal saving rate —personal saving as a percentage of disposable personal income—was 3.3 percent in the second quarter, a downward revision of 0.2 percentage point.

Gross Domestic Income and Corporate Profits

Real gross domestic income (GDI) increased 1.3 percent in the second quarter, the same as in the first quarter. The average of real GDP and real GDI , a supplemental measure of U.S. economic activity that equally weights GDP and GDI, increased 2.1 percent in the second quarter, compared with an increase of 1.4 percent in the first quarter (table 1).

Profits from current production (corporate profits with inventory valuation and capital consumption adjustments) increased $57.6 billion in the second quarter, in contrast to a decrease of $47.1 billion in the first quarter (table 10).

Profits of domestic financial corporations increased $46.4 billion in the second quarter, compared with an increase of $65.0 billion in the first quarter. Profits of domestic nonfinancial corporations increased $29.2 billion, in contrast to a decrease of $114.5 billion. Rest-of-the-world profits decreased $18.0 billion, in contrast to an increase of $2.3 billion. In the second quarter, receipts decreased $6.2 billion, and payments increased $11.8 billion.

Updates to GDP

With the second estimate, an upward revision to consumer spending was partly offset by downward revisions to nonresidential fixed investment, exports, private inventory investment, federal government spending, state and local government spending, and residential fixed investment. Imports were revised up. For more information, refer to the Technical Note . For information on updates to GDP, refer to the "Additional Information" section that follows.

Real GDP 2.8 3.0
Current-dollar GDP 5.2 5.5
Real GDI 1.3
Average of Real GDP and Real GDI 2.1
Gross domestic purchases price index 2.3 2.4
PCE price index 2.6 2.5
PCE price index excluding food and energy 2.9 2.8

First Quarter Wages and Salaries

BEA's standard practice for first-quarter estimates of wages and salaries is to incorporate data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program as part of the annual update of the National Economic Accounts. New QCEW data for the first quarter of 2024 will be incorporated in next month's release along with the 2024 Annual Update of the National Economic Accounts (refer to box below for details).

BEA will release results from the 2024 annual update of the National Economic Accounts, which include the National Income and Product Accounts as well as the Industry Economic Accounts, on September 26, 2024. The update will present revised statistics for GDP, GDP by Industry, and gross domestic income. For details, refer to Information on 2024 Annual Updates to the National, Industry, and State and Local Economic Accounts .

Definitions

Gross domestic product (GDP), or value added , is the value of the goods and services produced by the nation's economy less the value of the goods and services used up in production. GDP is also equal to the sum of personal consumption expenditures, gross private domestic investment, net exports of goods and services, and government consumption expenditures and gross investment.

Gross domestic income (GDI) is the sum of incomes earned and costs incurred in the production of GDP. In national economic accounting, GDP and GDI are conceptually equal. In practice, GDP and GDI differ because they are constructed using largely independent source data.

Gross output is the value of the goods and services produced by the nation's economy. It is principally measured using industry sales or receipts, including sales to final users (GDP) and sales to other industries (intermediate inputs).

Current-dollar estimates are valued in the prices of the period when the transactions occurred—that is, at "market value." Also referred to as "nominal estimates" or as "current-price estimates."

Real values are inflation-adjusted estimates—that is, estimates that exclude the effects of price changes.

The gross domestic purchases price index measures the prices of final goods and services purchased by U.S. residents.

The personal consumption expenditure price index measures the prices paid for the goods and services purchased by, or on the behalf of, "persons."

Personal income is the income received by, or on behalf of, all persons from all sources: from participation as laborers in production, from owning a home or business, from the ownership of financial assets, and from government and business in the form of transfers. It includes income from domestic sources as well as the rest of world. It does not include realized or unrealized capital gains or losses.

Disposable personal income is the income available to persons for spending or saving. It is equal to personal income less personal current taxes.

Personal outlays is the sum of personal consumption expenditures, personal interest payments, and personal current transfer payments.

Personal saving is personal income less personal outlays and personal current taxes.

The personal saving rate is personal saving as a percentage of disposable personal income.

Profits from current production , referred to as corporate profits with inventory valuation adjustment (IVA) and capital consumption (CCAdj) adjustment in the National Income and Product Accounts (NIPAs), is a measure of the net income of corporations before deducting income taxes that is consistent with the value of goods and services measured in GDP. The IVA and CCAdj are adjustments that convert inventory withdrawals and depreciation of fixed assets reported on a tax-return, historical-cost basis to the current-cost economic measures used in the national income and product accounts. Profits for domestic industries reflect profits for all corporations located within the geographic borders of the United States. The rest-of-the-world (ROW) component of profits is measured as the difference between profits received from ROW and profits paid to ROW.

For more definitions, refer to the Glossary: National Income and Product Accounts .

Statistical conventions

Annual-vs-quarterly rates . Quarterly seasonally adjusted values are expressed at annual rates, unless otherwise specified. This convention is used for BEA's featured, seasonally adjusted measures to facilitate comparisons with related and historical data. For details, refer to the FAQ " Why does BEA publish estimates at annual rates? "

Quarterly not seasonally adjusted values are expressed only at quarterly rates.

Percent changes . Percent changes in quarterly seasonally adjusted series are displayed at annual rates, unless otherwise specified. For details, refer to the FAQ " How is average annual growth calculated? " and " Why does BEA publish percent changes in quarterly series at annual rates? " Percent changes in quarterly not seasonally adjusted values are calculated from the same quarter one year ago. All published percent changes are calculated from unrounded data.

Calendar years and quarters . Unless noted otherwise, annual and quarterly data are presented on a calendar basis.

Quantities and prices . Quantities, or "real" volume measures, and prices are expressed as index numbers with a specified reference year equal to 100 (currently 2017). Quantity and price indexes are calculated using a Fisher-chained weighted formula that incorporates weights from two adjacent periods (quarters for quarterly data and annuals for annual data). For details on the calculation of quantity and price indexes, refer to Chapter 4: Estimating Methods in the NIPA Handbook .

Chained-dollar values are calculated by multiplying the quantity index by the current dollar value in the reference year (2017) and then dividing by 100. Percent changes calculated from real quantity indexes and chained-dollar levels are conceptually the same; any differences are due to rounding. Chained-dollar values are not additive because the relative weights for a given period differ from those of the reference year. In tables that display chained-dollar values, a "residual" line shows the difference between the sum of detailed chained-dollar series and its corresponding aggregate.

BEA releases three vintages of the current quarterly estimate for GDP. "Advance" estimates are released near the end of the first month following the end of the quarter and are based on source data that are incomplete or subject to further revision by the source agency. "Second" and "third" estimates are released near the end of the second and third months, respectively, and are based on more detailed and more comprehensive data as they become available.

The table below shows the average revisions to the quarterly percent changes in real GDP between different estimate vintages, without regard to sign.

-->
Vintage Average Revision
Without Regard to Sign
(percentage points, annual rates)
Advance to second 0.5
Advance to third 0.6
Second to third 0.3
1.2
on the BEA Website.

Annual and comprehensive updates are released in late September. Annual updates generally cover at least the five most recent calendar years (and their associated quarters) and incorporate newly available major annual source data as well as some changes in methods and definitions to improve the accounts. Comprehensive (or benchmark) updates are carried out at about 5-year intervals and incorporate major periodic source data, as well as major conceptual improvements.

Unlike GDP, advance current quarterly estimates of GDI and corporate profits are not released because data on domestic profits and net interest of domestic industries are not available. For fourth quarter estimates, these data are not available until the third estimate.

GDP by industry and gross output estimates are released with the third estimate of GDP.
