A romantic and heartfelt ode to the person you’ve just married should be the main focus of this speech. Try to avoid just saying empty words that anyone could say like “she/he is wonderful, beautiful, kind” etc. Think of specific things that your other half has done that makes you proud/ really love them/ that makes them unique. 6. Think about timing

A speech around the 7 – 10 minutes mark is considered the perfect amount of time for a groom’s speech (written down that’s about 1200 – 1400 words). Any less and you’ll sound a bit flippant. Any more and guests will start getting bored.

We all know someone that tells a story as intricate and descriptive as a Tolstoy novel and how we automatically glaze over as soon as they start speaking. Don’t be that person. Your guests don’t want War and Peace – they want a nice easy to listen to a speech that doesn’t mentally challenge them, especially once they’re a few drinks down.

8. Find the perfect quote

If you’re not a wordsmith, let someone else more qualified sum up your feelings for you. There are plenty of amazing quotes from authors and famous orators out there and one or two of them may be exactly what you need to succinctly put all your feelings about the day and your partner into one neat sentence. Just make sure to acknowledge the original author!

9. Give your partner a promise

A lovely way to be funny and also heartfelt at the same time is to make a promise or two to your partner in front of your guests. Don’t just repeat your vows here, promise something that is unique to her/him. Perhaps she’s an avid rock climber and you’re more of a couch potato? Promise you’ll learn to love her crazy hobby. Maybe you’re not exactly Heston Blumenthal in the kitchen? Promise you’ll learn to cook your partner more than beans on burnt toast. Perhaps she/he is the world’s greatest Swiftie. The biggest mistake you can make is to write a great speech on paper and then not read it out loud before the big day. Also, some written sentences don’t sound great when spoken, so reading out loud will help you to iron out any clunky syntax. Plus, you’ll want to know the speech almost by heart so that you don’t have your head in a piece of paper reading word-for-word on the day. You’re getting married! Many congratulations.

But in addition to the excitement, I’ll bet that nerves about giving your Groom speech are kicking in.

Not only do you have to speak in front of all your friends and family, but there’s also an entire speech to write first!

Fortunately, writing your speech is not too difficult, as long as you leave enough time to prepare and you follow a structured approach.

Following the steps below will make writing your Groom speech as painless as possible.

Step 1: Clarify the Important Details

Before starting your speech, ensure you know all the details about when and how the speeches will take place at your wedding.

Although you may already be familiar with most of the specifics (it’s your wedding after all!) quickly check with your spouse-to-be or wedding coordinator about any remaining questions.

Here are a few things you should clarify:

• Who else will speak at your wedding, and in what’s the planned order? (1)
• Where do the speeches fall in the overall wedding schedule? (e.g., after dinner but before dancing)
• Will you use a microphone, or will you need to project your voice?
• Will there be a separate “MC” to introduce each speaker or will you take on that role yourself?

(1) Traditionally, it’s the Father of the Bride, then the Groom (that’s you), and then then Best Man but these days there may be additional or alternative roles too.)

Step 2: Brainstorm a Few Initial Ideas

Once you’re clear how your big day will run, it’s time to generate some raw material and ideas for your speech content.

First, write down any thoughts, memories or messages that come easily to mind that you might want to include.

(At this stage, you’re just capturing ideas, not trying to structure them.)

You can use these questions to guide your brainstorming:

• What memories of your relationship stand out?
• What do you most admire and appreciate about your wife-to-be?
• What would you like to say directly to her on this special day?
• What are the ways in which you complement each other well?
• What hopes would you like to express for your future together?

You can jot down notes by hand or type them into a document on your computer.

Tip: Try using sticky notes if writing by hand — it will make organizing your thoughts easier later.

Step 3: Choose a Speech Structure

Next. decide on a basic outline to follow for structuring your speech. This will serve as a helpful guide for organising your ideas.

There are many possible structures you can use. The right one for you will depend on what you want to say and how you want to say it.

Some options include:

• Short and simple: Opening, First Meeting Story, Appreciation, Well Wishes, Toast
• Comprehensive: Opening, How You Met, Why You Love Her, Fond Memories, Hope for the Future, Toast
• Story-driven: Opening, Story 1, Story 2, Story 3, Common Themes, Toast
• Personal Qualities: Opening, Quality 1 + examples, Quality 2 + examples, Quality 3 + examples
• Novelty: For instance you could structure your speech as a Yelp review, or a business presentation, or a fairy story.

Once you select an outline, create headings or sections for the main points you’ll cover.

Tip: If using sticky notes, write each section heading on a separate sheet to organise your notes.

Step 4: Organise Your Content

Using your chosen outline, start grouping your brainstormed ideas and thoughts under the appropriate speech sections.

Move your sticky note ideas around or cut and paste your digital notes to reorganise the flow.

Don’t worry about getting it perfect first time. You’re really just trying to get a feel for the material you have and how well it fits into the structure you’ve chosen.

You’ll probably find you have too much content for some sections and not enough for others. Which means you may need to generate some additional ideas to fill any gaps.

The goal of this step is populating the main sections of your speech with the ideas that you intend to cover.

Step 5: Write the First Draft

Once you’ve roughly organised the sections and ideas, it’s time to write out the first full draft of your speech.

(Even if you don’t plan to memorise it word-for-word, writing a complete draft allows you to refine the messaging and transitions between sections.)

I recommend typing your draft out on your computer, as it will be easier to move things around and make revisions later.

Use document headings for each of your major sections and short paragraphs or bullet points for your ideas.

Then start to expand the individual ideas into fuller sentences and paragraphs you might use in your speech.

Tip: These days, most writing software will have some kind of built-in speech recognition. You can use this to verbally expand each of your ideas.

Again, don’t worry too much about the exact phrasing of each part of your speech. It’s more about getting something down onto the page.

Most writers will tell you that editing is much easier than writing so the quicker you can get a very rough version of your speech completed the better.

Here are some questions to guide you while editing:

• Are the individual sections of my speech well balanced in terms of the content (and length of speaking time)?
• Does each section flow smoothly into the next or do I need to add some transitional sentences?
• Is the basic structure working well overall or do I need to go back and consider a different template?

The goal of this step is having a rough draft of approximately the right length that covers most of the ground you want to cover in your speech.

Step 6: Practice and Refine

Once you have a solid first draft completed, start practising your speech out loud and make refinements.

Practicing in front of the mirror is a bit of a cliché and doesn’t work for everyone but why not give it to go?

Another option is to put your smartphone on a small tripod or prop it up against something and film yourself delivering your speech to camera, then review your performance afterwards.

It’s common to find that some sections don’t quite flow as naturally when spoken aloud as they do on the page. Make notes on areas that need rewording or tightening up.

Note: This is an iterative process — practice reading it, then make adjustments, then read again. Repeat this cycle until it feels polished.

Once you’re happy with how it reads aloud, consider doing a practice run with a friend or family member to get feedback before your final revisions.

Note: Time yourself reading the speech, and make sure it fits within the allotted time at your wedding. Adjust content as needed.

How To Write a Short Wedding Speech

With this guide, you can create short and sweet wedding speeches that will just flow organically. Write a killer speech that would be easy to read and will convey your love for the couple perfectly.

• Remember who is in the audience: Whether you are giving short wedding speeches as the best man or groom, it is important to keep your audience in mind. Introduce yourself and acknowledge them. Focusing on the audience and engaging them will help you speak from the heart.
• Avoid alcohol: While getting some liquid courage can be tempting, it is best to lay off the alcohol until after your speech. Alcohol could turn short funny wedding speeches into something long and nonsensical. This is because you might slur or forget your words under the influence, and this is something you absolutely do not want.
• Use note cards: Although you are not encouraged to read out your short wedding rehearsal dinner speech completely, note cards are encouraged. The Surprising Wedding Speech

We love hearing a speech from someone who isn’t part of the usual line up.

One couple asked the bride’s 84-year-old grandad to say a few words. They didn’t want him to get stressed about giving a formal speech so simply asked him to reveal his top five tips for a happy marriage. On the day he made everyone smile with a perfect mix of cheek, insight and nonsense. One of his tips included ‘no number twos in front of each other’. Even the best man couldn’t have gotten away with that.

Kids are also a great way to add humour to the speeches, as well as the cute factor. Get them to give you marriage advice too. We guarantee it will be priceless.

The Joint Speech

Whether it’s a bride and groom speech or a same-sex speech – joint speeches are a wedding trend that’s set to stay. It’s a great way of saying, BOOM, we’re a team. And who doesn’t love a double act?

It also makes a lot of sense – you  both  get to thank your friends and family, and you can practise without feeling the need to hide away in a cupboard.

The Funny Wedding Speech  

Of course, all speeches should be funny but some stand out.

One of the funniest speeches we’ve heard was a head-to-head between the best man and maid of honour where they debated who had lost the better friend. The bride and groom were then pitted against each other in different categories like ‘drinking ability’, ‘DIY skills’ and ‘comedic appearance’. The fact the best man and maid of honour couldn’t stop laughing throughout the speech only added to the comedy.

The Heartfelt Wedding Speech

Guests want tears (they’re demanding like that) and it’s great to have an emotional epicentre to the day.

Careful though, a sentimental speech should NOT contain any clichés and platitudes. It needs to be genuine and unique.

One of the sweetest speeches we’ve heard was a dad who delivered a speech that was less than three minutes long. He didn’t bother giving us a chronological rundown of his daughter’s achievements – instead, he cut straight to the chase and listed the reasons he loved her.

Those insights included ‘tolerating my love of Bruce Springstein in the car’, ‘buying me a nose trimmer’, and ‘making me smile whenever you come home’. It was one of our favourite ever speeches.

The Revealing Wedding Speech

We love a speech which lets everyone in on a secret. One bride got everyone smiling (and a few people crying) when, during her speech, she called a waiter over, requested a cheese toastie with peanut butter and revealed to the guests that she was three months pregnant.

Obviously conceiving is a bit much when it comes to gathering good content but there are other options. A classic was the groom who confessed to his in-laws that he’d been seeing their daughter for six months prior to them knowing. He then amused the audience with tales of his undercover antics, even managing to get the in-laws laughing too!

The Spontaneous ‘Speech’

We’ve been to a couple of weddings which haven’t had any formal speeches but have been inspired by countries where everyone is welcomed to give a toast throughout the meal.

It’s a fun idea which allows everyone to get involved without anyone feeling under pressure. People can choose to be sentimental or funny but every speech is short and sweet. Warning – it can become rather raucous the more alcohol is consumed!

Bride and Groom Won't Allow Friend to Bring His Wife to Wedding Because They Can't Afford +1's: 'Unbearably Broke'

A couple set a strict, no plus ones rule for their wedding telling the groom's best friend that his wife wasn't invited to the celebration

A couple is igniting viral conversation after setting a strict, no plus ones rule for their wedding — a regulation they say even extends to the groom's best friend's wife.

In an anonymous post shared to Reddit , a 34-year-old man says he got married to his wife last year, inviting his best friend of 17 years, and his friend's fiancé — even paying for them to have their own room in a group accommodation.

Three days before the wedding, however, the friend and his fiancé backed out last minute and said they wouldn't be making it.

"They didn’t give us anywhere near enough notice to cancel their meals, so we still had to pay the full amount for both of them, plus they never paid their share of the accommodation for the night before," the man writes in the post.

Fast forward to a year later, and the poster writes that he received a wedding invite from his longtime friend — but his wife was not included in the invitation.

"I type my name, my invite showed up. My wife wasn’t on it, so I tried again with her name - “'uest not found.' Weird," the man writes of the invitation, which was sent virtually.

Later, the man asked his friend about what he assumed was a mix-up, only to be told that the oversight was intentional.

"He says '…we’re not doing plus ones during the day cos of how unbearably broke we are,' " he writes.

The friend added that, while his wife wasn't invited to the wedding, she could come over for a casual group hangout, "to come smash pizzas and many many beverages with us for the evening."

"I’m not sure how to process this; you and your (then) gf were both invited to our [wedding], both dropped out and didn’t even cover the accommodation we had paid for, never mind the meal etc, and then tell me I can’t bring my wife to your wedding, but she’s welcome to have a free pizza and buy her own drinks that evening? LOL," the man writes in the Reddit post.

He added that the friend lives in "a different country, so this is not a case of jump in the car and swing in for the evening party. This is flights, hire cars, hotels. Insane."

Other Reddit users are weighing in, with one writing that the couple getting married doesn't seem to understand what a "plus one" is meant for.

"The entire point of 'plus one' is you don’t know their dating situation well enough to extend a formal invitation," the commenter wrote. "It’s wild to consider inviting just one partner of a married couple. So rude!"

Another added: "Your wife is a guest, not a plus one. Weird to not include her for the wedding but invite her to smash pizza? Awkward."

Others advised the poster to simply RSVP "no," and one took its a step further: "RSVP 'Yes.' Then delete their number."

1. "I’m the director of catering at a hotel and I have so many stories. But, one of my favorites was when the bride left after dinner was served. She went upstairs to her room because she was tired. She texted her husband and he came up with her and never returned. The party went on. She went back without her husband, saying she needed 'a couple of drinks.' At the end of the night, she went to an after-party at a bar with just the groomsmen. The next day, the bride and groom had breakfast at separate tables."

2. "My sister-in-law (who I barely consider my sister-in-law because we don't speak) got trashed on her wedding night to my brother. She vomited all over herself in her multi-thousand-dollar gown. My entire family had flown from the northeast to the deep south to be there. She hated all of us, didn't invite us to brunch the day after the wedding, then came over to our guest house to be a jerk. They're still together, but I don't know how well it's going."

The minister followed the groom, then came back and said that while the wedding was off, the reception would go forward since the food was already there. 11. "This was my former co-worker’s wedding. When everyone had finished eating and started to dance, the bride and groom turned off the music and turned up the lights. They told all the guests they were leaving and that the venue needed to be cleaned up by the time their rental period ended (20 minutes). The guests had no idea. The bride and groom took off, and we were all left to fold chairs, collect dishes, take them to the kitchen, and gather linens. Then we all just mosied off into the night."

Detroit Lions Offensive Tackle Penei Sewell’s Timeless Wedding at a Mountainside California Estate

The NFL player and his wife, Isabelle Ford, said “I do” in Malibu in mid-July.

Detroit Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell met his wife, Isabelle Ford, at the University of Oregon in 2018. He was a football player for the Ducks, while she was on the cheer squad—so it didn’t take long for them to meet through mutual friends. In 2021, Penei was selected by the Lions in the NFL Draft and two years after that, on April 18, 2023, he proposed at the couple’s new home in Michigan, surprising Isabelle by covering their foyer with flowers and candles while the couple’s favorite song, Chris Lane’s “Big, Big Plans” played in the background. When they started to plan their July 12, 2024, nuptials, the couple knew that they wanted to pick a venue that was convenient for both of their families. (Isabelle’s family is in Oregon, while Penei’s is split between Utah and Hawaii.) They soon settled on Cielo Farms in Malibu, California. 

Isabelle, a stay-at-home mom, says they were drawn to the venue’s stunning mountain views and the on-site vineyard, which gave their wedding “a taste of Tuscany.” The rustic and elegant location fit right into the bride’s vision: a classic timeless aesthetic with white florals and pops of baby blue. Tori Perano with Passera Events made that dream a reality. “The process with Tori was so easy,” Isabelle exclusively tells Brides . “I truly don’t know what I would have done without her.” 

While the couple wanted their big day to be elegant and intimate, they also prioritized having fun. “Penei and I both love to have a good time, and we wanted to make sure our wedding day reflected that—and didn’t end up being too serious or traditional,” Isabelle says. “We made the day exactly what we wanted it to be!” Ahead, see every photo from their joyful welcome party , ceremony, and reception, as captured by Katie Wilson .

The couple kicked off their wedding weekend with a vibrant poolside welcome party at a private estate in Los Angeles. “I knew our wedding day would be very timeless with soft and neutral tones, so we went for a more fun and colorful direction for the welcome party,” Isabelle says. Staying true to a classic bridal look, she selected a white Nana Jacqueline dress for the occasion. Pink, orange, and yellow balloons floated in the property’s infinity pool, matching the bright floral tablecloths and fuchsia sign spelling out the couple’s last name. The pre-wedding celebration also featured one of their favorite desserts: a gelato cart.

Isabelle says finding her wedding dress was the easiest part of the planning process —even though it ended up being a different look than she had originally envisioned. While she initially thought she wanted a fitted dress with straps, she quickly settled on a Netta Benshabu strapless ball gown with a slit. “It fit my body perfectly and made me feel like a princess,” she says. She completed her look with Sam Edelman shoes , and an Anthropologie veil , as well as a mix of old and new accessories: her mom’s tennis bracelet, pear-shaped diamond drop earrings, and a diamond necklace, which was a wedding-day gift from Penei. 

Wanting to achieve the perfect naturally-glam look, the bride flew in Katherine Green , a makeup artist, and Frankie Gray , a hairstylist, from Michigan to nail her vision. She added clip-in extensions to lengthen her hair before putting it in a half-up, half-down hairstyle with a braid and face-framing pieces. A French tip nail with a floral design and a spritz of Ledda 22 Orris complemented the whimsical look. The bride relied on her pre-wedding skincare routine —and a few pumps of Sol de Janiero Body Glow on the big day—to make her truly radiate. “Before my wedding day, I was getting monthly HydraFacials , and I swear by them!” she says. “They helped my skin so much and made me so naturally glowy.” 

While Isabelle says she initially envisioned her bridesmaids in dusty blue dresses, matching everyone proved to be more of a challenge than she was expecting. Ultimately, she went with black dresses in a style of her bridesmaids’ choosing paired with bouquets of white flowers with blue accents from Tula Rosa Florals . “It turned out so well,” she says. 

With the help of his stylist, Ricco Noi, Penei selected a custom-made Dior suit for the occasion, paired with Dior shoes. Wanting the groomsmen to “feel special too,” the couple decided to do custom tuxedos for them as well from Nota Bene Bespoke . Like Isabelle, Penei also made sure to prepare his skin for the big day. “She convinced me to get a HydraFacial a week before the wedding, and I actually liked it,” he says. 

The couple’s three-month-old daughter Mila, who wore a Popatu dress, and their 20-month-old son, Malaki, who wore a suit from Little Tuxedos with Nike sneakers, served as their flower girl and ring bearer , respectively. 

The ceremony began with a recording of “Wildest Dreams” by Duomo for the processional, before Isabelle’s dad, Michael, walked her down the aisle to a cello cover of Calum Scott’s “Biblical.” 

Underneath a nine-foot arch (designed to accommodate Penei’s height!) adorned with baby blue and white flowers, the couple exchanged vows they had written themselves . “I can confidently say Penei blew mine out of the water,” Isabelle says. “His vows were absolutely incredible and left me speechless. He is not always the best at saying how he feels, so I didn’t really know what to expect, but he had me crying happy tears.”

During cocktail hour, guests could select from the couple’s two specialty drinks: a Hennessy sidecar with orange liqueur, lemon, and a sugar rim in honor of Penei and an espresso martini with vodka for Isabelle. The prominence of florals continued into the reception space, as white arches imprinted with greenery beckoned for guests to “ring for a drink” by pulling on a silver bell. The couple tapped Joshua Kahula , the lead singer for Nuffsaid, a popular Maui-based band, for live music during cocktail hour and dinner.

Wanting to bring texture, softness, and elegance into the mountainside venue, the couple selected tan white-wash farm tables topped with white linens, blue plates, and gold-rimmed glassware. String lights , taper candles, and copper flatware added a touch of coziness to the outdoor space. They also hung white leis from the 10-foot-tall trees surrounding the head table, a nod to Penei’s Hawaiian roots. 

Personalized menus from Wildhouse Ink with blue floral accents and an arched design showcased one of Penei’s priorities for the day: the food. Guests could choose from Korean BBQ chicken, slow-braised short rib, and wild mushroom ravioli.

The couple selected Matt Stell’s “Prayed for You (Wedding Version)” for their first dance. And the happy tears continued for the bride when it came time for the speeches . “The speeches of our siblings, who were our maid of honor and best man, were amazing and had us both in tears,” she says. 

Prioritizing comfort for the rest of the evening was key. Penei slipped into a pair of all-black Louis Vuitton trainers with white laces, and Isabelle pulled her hair into an updo.  

Skipping a large cake, the couple opted to cut into a small red velvet version before inviting their guests to enjoy a dessert wall full of sweet treats, including donuts, pies—and even milk and cookies.

Vox DJs led the entertainment as guests proceeded to hit the dance floor . The couple embraced the care-free, fun vibe with their reception outfits; Isabelle changed into a short, white scoop-neck Watters dress with straps, while Penei opted for a comfortable white t-shirt and sunglasses. The evening ended with the newlyweds and their attendees singing along to John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” 

“Make sure you enjoy the day as much as you can,” Isabelle advises future couples. “Be present and stay with your spouse all night! It’s easy to get pulled in a different direction, but we made sure to stay together all night, and it was so much fun!”
