Printable Homework Planners to Help Students Get Organized

If you’re a parent, you know how incredibly overwhelming it can be for students to stay on top of studying and all other homework assignments.

Especially when they’re juggling multiple classes.

Due dates can pile up quickly if they aren’t staying organized and managing their time wisely.

However, there is a tool that can be quite helpful – A printable homework planner! You’ll find a few different styles below.

Weekly homework planners

These free printables will help students plan and track all their assignments for each day of the week.

They can write down the class, a description of the homework assignment, and when it’s due. Once it’s completed it, check “done” and move on to the next!

I recommend printing a few copies at a time. Encourage your middle schooler or high schooler to keep one in their binder.

Monthly homework calendars

In addition to weekly planners , older students may benefit from a blank homework calendar as well.

It’s nice to have a bird’s-eye view of each month.

Some of these templates have extra lines below the calendar for writing down reminders and other misc. notes.

Monthly assignment and exam trackers

Some students may prefer a simple running list of what’s due each month.

With these trackers, they can write down the class, jot down a quick description of what’s due (whether it’s a basic assignment, project, or exam), and the due date.

And, of course, once the assignment is finished, they can mark done.

In addition, a planner will help you improve your organisational skills. That means you will be a more organized student with fewer instances of forgetfulness and confusion. You will learn how to keep your commitments and meet your deadlines.

Another important aspect of the planner is that you will be able to track your achievements and goals. Making a list of your assignments, homework, and to-do lists in your planner will help you track what you have completed and what is still pending. This planner will also make you more responsible. How to Create a Homework Planner?

You need to know how to create this planner because having one is important and beneficial. You can use any of the ways mentioned below to create your own planner according to your requirements.

Explained below are the five ways you can create your planner:  

Method 1: Design your own homework planner

• Choose all the planning sheets you will need in your planner. This may include a monthly calendar, a weekly planning sheet, and a daily to-do list . You can use sticky notes to add information to your calendar or choose to use sticky notes to add important details to specific dates.
• The next step is to download free templates for different kinds of sheets that you have chosen for your homework planner and then print them. You can use notebook paper, blank printing paper, or other printed papers for printing, depending on your style and planning design.
• You should then organize your papers in a way that you want them to appear in your planner. You can start with the monthly sheets, then the weekly ones, and finally the daily papers. Because school schedules are usually divided into weeks rather than months, having separate sheets for weeks and days ensures continuity in planning even if the month changes midweek. 
• The next step is to create sections for your planner by using color-coded sheets, dividers, tape, or post-notes to mark the presence of two sections or mark important sections.
• After that, you can creatively design your planner cover by drawing and painting it, decorating it with your favorite stickers, or designing and printing out a cover on the computer.
• Since you already have the sections divided, you need to decide what each section will include. You can categorize your planner sections according to subjects. Monthly, weekly, and daily categories can be created within the sections.
• The final step in designing your own planner is to bind the papers together and put a cover. You can choose to either glue or staple the papers together. Your planner is now ready for you to add information about your assignments and homework. You can use your planner for assignments from one class or different classes. Make sure to highlight each task using a different color of ink.

Method 2: Use a standard notebook

• The first step is to choose a planner notebook based on what you need and the number of assignments and homework you might receive for each class, from the various homework planners available. 
• The next step is to decorate your notebook, a journal, or a composition book. Be creative and either draw or glue decorations on your notebook. Decorating your planner will help you stay motivated when using a planner.
• Then, you should divide your notebook into sections like the ones mentioned earlier: the monthly sections, weekly sections, and daily to-do list. You can count the number of sheets you need for each section and divide them using dividers, folding corners of the papers, and using tape or coloured sheets.
• Ensure that you label all the sections that you have created in your planner to make it easier to indicate the right information in the right place. You can create the label by writing, drawing, or using stickers.
• The next step is to draw your calendars so that you can plan your month based on the information in your planner. You should make a calendar by drawing a large box, dividing it into four columns and seven rows, naming the days of the week on top of each column, naming the months, and including the correct dates.
• Ensure that you create your weekly planning sheets since these are the ones you will use the most. Most of your homework and your assignment will be included in the weekly sections. You will need to divide it into eight columns, seven for the days of the week and one extra column for notes.
• The final step of using a standard notebook to create your planner includes the required assignments and homework. Ensure you organize your tasks based on deadlines to ensure you meet all your deadlines.

Method 3: Use a binder

• Choose a binder that will fit all the necessary papers that you need to include in your planner. This includes the assignments sections, the calendars, and the weekly planners. Try to minimize the number of papers in the binder so that you can easily access information about your assignments.
• The next step is to decide how you want to organize your planner for your homework. You should include the monthly calendar, weekly sections, and daily to-do lists. Using a binder will make it easier to add more sections and papers in the future when needed. That means you do not have to focus much on the number of papers for each section.
• The next step is to print out your planning sheets, including blank calendars and blank weekly planning sheets. You can edit and download customized homework planning sheet templates and then print them for use. After printing, insert these planning sheets into your binder.
• The fourth step will be to divide your planning sheets using dividers so that you can separate and access each section easily. You should also label these sections appropriately. Finally, you should open your binder rings and insert the to-do list, the weekly sections, the calendar, and a special index page to help you with arranging the pages.
• The final step is to include your homework and assignments sections. At this point, the binder is ready to be used as a homework planner, and you can start planning and organizing your schoolwork.

Method 4: Use a digital planner

• Select a digital planner that can be used on your laptop, iPad, or smartphone. For example, you can use note-taking or other calendar apps as your digital planner for your homework.
• The next step is to either take notes or design a custom planner meant to organize your school homework and assignments directly into the apps.
• Finally when including details about your assignment, ensure you focus on these three important times; new semester, new year or new season, Sundays, and classes.
• For the upcoming semester (year or season), you can include all the set dates for important activities like tests and deadlines. The apps help you update your weekly sections on Sundays, as they mark the start of the new week. Finally, in class, you can use the app to update information in your planner for to-do lists, key dates, lengthy assignments, projects, tests, and final exams.

Method 5: Use a template

You can also choose to use a template to prepare your planner for homework. A template is the easiest method to use since you will be required to download a premade planner and customize it to suit your homework needs.

You can easily edit a template and fill in the required information. Also, you can choose to download and print it, then paste it in your notebook to use as your daily planner. Whatever method you choose, the template for homework planner is not time-consuming and guarantees you less stress during the preparation process.

In the case of a to-do list, you do not have to mention every single thing you intend or plan to do during the day. This will be difficult if something unexpected occurs or you decide to do something other than what you planned. As a student, the best way is to organize the tasks you need to complete immediately, the tasks you will complete in a couple of hours, and the tasks you will do on another day. It is about which assignment or homework is the most important.

What to Include in a Homework Planner

The information in this section will help you create a comprehensive planner that will assist you in organizing your homework and assignments.

Here is what you need to include in your planner once you have created it using any of the methods mentioned above:

Regular times for homework

You need to include a regular block of homework time. This is the time that you have dedicated to doing your homework. Setting regular times for homework is important, as it will help you plan for extra study and other school work you may have.

Due dates of homework assignments

The deadlines and due dates for your homework and assignments should also be included in the planner. This will help you remember what you need to do and when to ensure you submit your work on time.

Dates of tests

Your planner should include information about your homework and the test dates. You need to plan and organize your time to study and prepare for your tests. Including this information will help you stay informed about the upcoming tests.

Any special events to attend

In case you need to attend a dance, party, celebration, or any other special event, you should include it in your planner. This is important, as you will not have time for your homework if you have not planned it properly in your schedule.  

Deadlines for signing up for standardized tests

Standardized tests like the SATs are important tests for you as a student. If you are interested in taking such exams, you need to note the deadlines for registering for these standardised tests in your homework planner. That way, you can prepare for the tests and stay alert about applying.

Your planner should also have information about your school fee due date. You have to remind your parents or guardians about paying your school fees, and that is why it is important to include this information in your planner.

Dates of school holidays

Since you will be checking your planner for information about your homework, assignments, and tests, the planner is a good place to indicate the dates of any upcoming school holidays. This will help you remember to do all that is required before the school holiday.

Best Practices to Follow

When creating and filling your  planner, there are tips that you should remember. These tips are some of the best practices you need to adapt and follow for effective homework planning.

Some of these best practices include the following:  

1. Choose the right planner for you

It is important to choose the right planner for your homework and assignment needs. Your planner is meant to help with your school life by organizing your schoolwork. That means choosing your planner is the first and most important thing you should do. Choose what is most suitable for you, whether it is a notebook or a digital planner.

2. Set weekly goals

You need to include your weekly goals in your planner. Apart from your homework and assignments, you can also include your weekly goals in the planner. An example of a weekly goal can be studying for about 45 minutes to improve your grades.

3. Keep track of upcoming assignments

For the planner to be beneficial, remember that it is not enough to note your homework and assignment details. As a student, you must track those assignments that are due soon. It will not be beneficial to have a homework planner and still forget to complete assignments on time.

4. Practice time management

When creating and filling in your planner, you need to practice time management. As a student, managing school and your personal life requires you to learn how to manage your time. Ensure you allocate appropriate time for each school task, homework, and assignment. That way, you can have more time to indulge in other activities.

5. Keep it positive

I often get asked what paper I recommend. For regular copy paper this 5 ream case of paper is one of the better deals. For cardstock I really like this card stock paper on amazon . It is much cheaper than I have found in stores and has a good thickness for most projects without being so thick that it jams the printer.

How to Create a Reading Log for Kids

SUPPLIES NEEDED –

• Reading Log Printable Pack (download below)
• printer + paper and card stock
• scissors or paper cutter
• glue stick or double-sided tape
• laminator (optional)
• markers, pens, or pencils

DIRECTIONS –

• First, download our printable pack, making sure you print off a cover page and enough inserts for each child.
• Print the cover page on card stock (optional), and then fold it in half and set aside.
• Print off the Reading log minutes and book review pages on regular paper and then cut on the lines down the middle.
• Place several of the inserts inside your folded cover page and staple together.
• Cut out our bookplates, write your child’s name, or your family name on the line, and glue or tape inside your books. You can also print these bookplates off on sticker paper if you want.
• Print out the matching bookmarks onto card stock and/or laminate if you’d like. You can even go a little further and add a ribbon to the top!

OUR READING LOG PACK INCLUDES:

• Cover page (to be folded in half, so there’s a front and back)
• Reading Log minutes tracker (2 on a page)
• Reading Log book review (2 on a page)
• Bookplates (8 on a page)
• Bookmarks (4 on a page)

I think these would also be so fun to give to a teacher. Print and fill out enough bookplates to add to all the books in her classroom library. Or, give her some books for her class library and include these bookplates already inside. (I can picture the cute bundle now- all tied up with some cute twine!)

Back to school brings mixed emotions in my home. For the kids, of course, it’s mostly sadness that the hazy lazy days of a hot summer have come and gone. It’s back to school and “too much homework” as they always say. For myself, as a Mom of a growing brood, there are the pros: first day of school signs and pictures, cute back to school clothes, quieter and more productive days, etc. But with the start of school, there is also the realization that I only get so many fun summers with my little ones before they want to hang out with their friends more than Mom. 😪 I also know that those clothes and supplies can cost a small fortune and with school comes endless homework, extracurricular activities, and the endless stream of paperwork and dates and times to remember for  each  child. Yep, definitely a mixed bag!

Of all the mixed emotions there is a constant that always seems to be a source of frustration in our home: homework. When it comes to homework I’m very, very comfortably between the  tiger moms and the free-rangers, who respectively are strict disciplinarians who want sky-high academic results at all times and parents content to let their kids learn by doing and being independent as possible.

I’m not saying any of the either of the above approaches are more correct than the other, to each their own and every child needs to be parented in the way that suits them best. But I’m definitely not going to lose it if my kids miss a day of homework. Neither am I going to let them just play every day. Balance in all things is my philosophy. I’d assume most Moms rest in this cozy middle area with me. 🙂

In order to find the balance between too much and too little homework, I’ve spent some time creating homework charts, checklists, and planners for a variety of situations. ( I’ll be adding more and more over time so check back if you don’t see the one you want. Or leave a comment and I might  be able to squeeze in some time to create new ones based off reader feedback.). While they vary a little bit most of them allow some combination of assignments or class, days of the week, dates, due dates, daily reading tracking, and some form of completion in the form of a checkbox or otherwise. The charts below are set up for monthly tracking BUT just because they are monthly homework charts doesn’t mean you can’t set rewards at the daily or weekly level. I’ve always found it to be more effective when I tailor the rewards to each child and subject. Sometimes they need a reward on a daily basis (really struggling to form a good habit), sometimes on a weekly basis and sometimes the reward is such that they better do their homework for an entire month if I’m holding up my end of the bargain! So, whether you use these as a homework sticker chart or simply use checkmarks or something else entirely, hopefully, you’ll find a method that will work for your child! Even better if we can inspire them to  love learning and the reward chart becomes a temporary aid to unlock a lifetime of learning!

You will find a number of templates to create a reading log for young readers. You can use these printables in the classroom or at home in an attempt to help kids develop a love of reading. There are reading logs with a summary, with the genre, rating, page numbers or the number of pages read, author of the book, and space for the parent’s signature. There are separate pages per grade level below.

If you give your students reading homework then you can have a family member or guardian sign to confirm that the child read the relevant section. Most of the templates have a place for a signature.

Benefits of Keeping a Reading Log

You can use a reading log for adults and kids and they have benefits for both.

The concept that “what you focus on grows” is well-recognized in psychology and personal development. It suggests that by dedicating attention and energy to a specific activity or goal, you increase the likelihood of achieving it and enhancing its presence in your life. This principle applies to various behaviors, including reading.

When you track your reading—whether by noting down titles read in a reading log, maintaining a reading journal , or using a digital app to monitor progress—you inherently increase your focus on the activity of reading. This heightened focus can lead to a natural increase in the amount of reading you do. Essentially, tracking introduces a systematic method to reflect on what you are reading, how much, and how often, which can motivate you to read more. It also helps in setting clearer goals around reading, such as aiming to finish a certain number of books or exploring diverse genres, which can further amplify your engagement with reading.

Research supports this idea by showing that when students track their reading habits, it correlates with higher academic achievement in reading subjects. The act of monitoring and reflecting on their reading likely motivates them to read more and with greater intent (source: Frontiers and Frontiers ).

Thus, by making reading a focused activity through tracking, you’re likely to enhance not only the frequency of your reading but also deepen your engagement with the material, ultimately making reading a more ingrained part of your daily routine.

When you track the books you read, you will find that you read more. If you are looking to read more for literacy development or general enrichment, then set monthly or yearly reading goals. In the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People , by Stephen Covey, the author explains that there is no better way to inform and expand your mind on a regular basis than to get into the habit of reading. Reading provides you with an opportunity to get into the best minds that are now or that have ever been in the world. Covey recommends starting with a goal of a book a month then a book every two weeks, then a book a week.

One of the best ways to develop children’s reading skills is to encourage consistent reading. Nightly reading is a great habit to form from a very young age. Try to get younger children to make reading a part of their daily schedule even if it is only a few minutes a day. If they develop this habit when they are young they are more likely to continue reading when they are older.

If you are using the reading logs in the classroom then you can get a large piece of construction paper and adhere each student’s log or put them on a bulletin board. This will help students read more since there will be healthy competition once everyone’s log is visible.

Remember what you read

When you keep track of the books, you read, you will remember what you read. I can’t tell you how many times I have started to read a book only to discover I had actually read it. My memory, unfortunately, isn’t what it used to be. Keep all old logs in a binder to have records of books read over time.

Remember if you enjoyed the book

You can add a rating system and rate each book from 1 to 5. This will help you when someone asks if you recommend a specific book. It will also probably increase the chance that you remember what you read.

Understand your reading habits

When you track your reading habits over time you will notice how they evolve. Often, we don’t realize that most of the books we read are similar and we can broaden our horizons.

Recognize your achievement

Reading many books is an achievement that you deserve to recognize. When your book log is long and you don’t keep a record of the books you read, you will not be able to create the list years from now.

If you want to give kids motivation to read then you can give them a prize when they complete their book log.

Encourage comprehension and reflection

If you use our book review template and write a few sentences about each book, it will force you to think about the book and what it meant to you. How did it make you feel, and what did you get from it? These are things that we think about when we try to summarize a book in a few sentences.

🌈 Summer Reading Log

We LOVE this summer reading log for students of all ages!

Kids literally create a colorful reading rainbow as they count the minutes they read and color in each of the 100 circles!

The goal is to fill in the entire rainbow between the last day of school and the first day of school .

Teachers must customize this log by writing in how many minutes a student must read per circle. But if they read just 10 minutes per circle, they’ll read one thousand minutes by the time they complete the activity!

Kids can also keep a short list of their favorite books by writing them in on the clouds.

I offer prizes to students who bring this back to me at the beginning of the next school year, whether or not it’s filled in fully because maintaining a habit of reading is my goal!

📝 Weekly Reading Log

This is a great weekly reading log for weekly homework.

It’s formatted to include a daily entry for students to log the date, title, author, minutes or pages read, and write a short summary of what they read.

I typically assign students to read a certain amount each day, then give them the option to choose any 1-2 days per week “off.”

Whether you are well into the school year or are enjoying a relaxed summertime schedule, reading logs are undoubtedly an excellent way for your child or student to keep track of their book-reading goals.

During the school year, children (in both elementary and middle school) are encouraged – or even required – to read as much as possible and are usually given a target number of minutes or pages to read every day. If you are an educator, homeschooler, or are a parent who simply wants their child to excel in reading, printing out a reading log for them to keep track of their minutes is the perfect way to ensure they are reading an appropriate minimum amount. Tracking progress also allows the child to see how well they are doing which will encourage them to read even more!

If the school year has ended and you’re already into summertime mode it doesn’t mean that reading is less important or unneeded – with all that extra time on their hands it is actually a perfect opportunity to have your child check out some books from the local library (more book trackers here!) and dive in! Reading year-round will help them maintain all the progress they’ve made during the previous school year in terms of reading and comprehension, plus it’s a great boredom buster – who doesn’t love getting lost in a great book!?

What is a reading log?

A reading log, also known as a reading journal, is a document used to keep track of your child’s or your student’s reading. It is essentially a place where a student can record all of the books they read.

The reading log can track a variety of things, such as the title of the book, the date the book was started, the number of pages read, and the time spent reading.

Reading logs are a great tool to promote reading as a consistent, daily habit for kids. They also give students a visual representation of their progress and help to encourage kids to read every day.

Make reading fun

• In addition to this, you can also use reading journals as a classroom management tool. Students can receive stickers or stars if they read a certain number of pages per day, for example.
• Developing a good reading habit at a young age can help to foster a love of reading in students. It encourages students to read outside of school, which is where reading can become a habit.
• Using a reading log can then feel like a fun game or challenge for kids, in which they want to have a higher number of pages read each day or increase their minutes read. This encourages them to turn the page and keep reading even if they feel distracted. It can then stop kids from reaching for electronic devices instead.

How does a reading log work?

Building a reading habit doesn’t need to feel overwhelming..

Using a reading log template is a free and easy way to record data.

Kids should treat them like a reading journal, documenting their progress in a fun way.

All kids need to do to complete their reading journal is to follow these steps:

• Choose a book that sounds fun and interesting.
• Set aside dedicated reading time (even if it’s only 5 or 10 minutes).
• Read the book!
• Write down the author’s name, the book title, and the amount of time spent reading or the number of pages read.
• Record any extra information that is included in the reading log, such as writing a short chapter summary.
• Have parents or guardians sign the reading log if necessary.

What should be included in a reading log?

There are many features you can include in a reading log.

Many printable reading logs and journal templates already come with a lot of these useful features, to help make reading as fun as possible for kids.

There are some aspects of a reading log that are necessary to track reading accurately and to support kids’ reading skills in the best way, such as including the date the book was started and finished, and the title of the book.

Consider the time frame of the reading log

• Weekly or daily reading logs. If the reading journal is a weekly reading log or a daily reading log, then it is important to write down the number of pages read or minutes spent reading. This can give teachers a clearer insight into students’ progress.
• Monthly reading logs. However, if the focus of the reading log is less on making reading a daily habit, but simply a more regular one, then you may choose not to include the minutes read or the number of pages This could be in the form of monthly reading logs instead. With this, you may opt for a simple date, title, and rating layout.

Essential things to include in a reading log

• The book title and author of the book: Knowing the title can help teachers to assess whether the book is appropriate, as some books may be too challenging (or not challenging enough) and thus prevent a love of reading from growing.
• Start and finish date: This is essential to help track how long it took the student to read the book in full, and encourages a weekly reading habit .
• A rating or opinion: Kids should be encouraged to think critically about the fiction they are reading. You could include a star rating system in the reading log, or use facial expression emojis for students to circle depending on how much they enjoyed the book.

Fun things to include in a reading log

• Minutes read or pages read: A fun way to encourage kids to love reading is by making it into a game or challenge. Setting a target, and documenting the minutes read not only helps teachers to track progress but will also give kids something to improve upon each time. Kids could also write down the page number they finished on, so they can continue reading where they left off.
• A plot summary : Kids can write a short paragraph summary of the story of the book. This also highlights how much they absorbed the information in the book.
• Favorite Scenes, characters, or quotes: Fiction books can be very engaging for kids, so let them share their thoughts in the reading log. Kids could also fill out the page numbers for their favorite scenes or quotes as a point of reference.
• Genre: Encourage kids to learn about different books and genres by asking them to write down what genre they think the book fits into. At the end of the year, this can then be used to see what genres the kids preferred, which can then help you to decide which books to display in the classroom.
• Strengths and weaknesses of the book: Kids could write down three positive and three negative things about the book. This promotes critical thinking skills and gives students a chance to share their honest opinions.

Reading logs can also be used seasonally in the classroom. Many teachers give kids a reading log during summer break to promote reading during this time. Alternatively, you might choose to use a winter reading log or have reading logs focused on different yearly holidays.

What are the benefits of a reading log?

Reading in any form is a positive habit for students to build..

If kids write in their reading logs consistently, then their reading time is becoming consistent, and this is a great start.

However, there are many benefits of reading logs besides simply encouraging kids to read.

1. Reading logs promote discipline

Reading logs, particularly for older students, are often used outside of school, independently. By having a duty to record their minutes read or pages read in the reading log, reading can be incorporated into the student’s routine and encourages them to have an independent task that parents or guardians are not involved with.

Kids must make time in their day to read so that they can write in their reading log. This focus on a structure can increase kids’ reading time, whilst giving them an opportunity to build self-discipline, which is an important skill for young learners to develop.

2. Students have autonomy over their own reading

Many of us will recall being ‘forced’ to read boring books in school. Reading logs help to eliminate this feeling of dread when having to pick up the school-assigned book.  Reading logs should give students the freedom to choose whatever book they wish to read (as long as it is age-appropriate).

Teachers can encourage students to use their school library or local library to choose from a wide range of books, and to choose a book based on their own interests.  There are so many fantastic children’s fiction books available, and a reading journal should be used in a way that gives students a chance to explore their local libraries and bookshops.

As a book lover, there is nothing more fun than wandering around a bookshop and choosing a new fiction book. Reading logs can be an opportunity to give students this wonderful experience for themselves.

3. A reading journal can help improve reading comprehension

Reading is a skill, and like all skills, they only improve with regular, consistent effort.

Writing in a reading log daily or weekly ensures that students are reading on a regular basis. This will undoubtedly help to improve reading comprehension, and allow students to understand the content of their chosen book more easily.

If you download a reading log or journal templates that include a section for a chapter or plot summary, or even a place for students to record their favorite characters or favorite scenes, this can definitely build reading comprehension ability.

With this, students have to remember key details from the book. It is a great way for teachers to track just how much students are absorbing from the book that they are reading.

4. Reading logs make reading fun!

Reading should be pleasurable. It should be viewed as a fun, exciting activity, and it is often a teacher’s dream to hear students thinking in this way.  Using reading log templates not only eases the strain of designing a unique reading log but is also a versatile, creative option.

There are many reading logs that you can download and customize to your liking, or you may wish to use printable reading logs and keep them as they are.  Kids can decorate their reading logs or use fun stationery to fill in their information. It sounds simple, but small outlets for creativity can make reading more fun for students who struggle to pick up a book.

As a teacher, I understand the busy workload placed upon educators. There are many aspects of teaching to juggle, and creating brand-new resources can often add additional pressure to an already increasingly demanding schedule. Wrongful death suit against Disney serves as a warning to consumers when clicking 'I agree'

A wrongful death lawsuit against Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is serving as a reminder to consumers the importance of reading the fine print when signing up for a streaming service or smartphone app

A wrongful death lawsuit against Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is serving as a reminder to consumers of the importance of reading the fine print when signing up for a streaming service or smartphone app.

The lawsuit was filed by the family of a New York woman who died after eating at a restaurant in Disney Springs, an outdoor dining, shopping and entertainment complex in Florida owned by Disney.

Disney is arguing that the lawsuit should be dropped because the plaintiff, the woman's husband, once signed up for a trial subscription of the Disney+ streaming service. That service, they argue, includes a subscriber agreement in which the customer agrees to settle any lawsuits against Disney out of court through arbitration.

Such agreements, which customers quickly consent to by clicking “I agree” when downloading an app or a streaming service, are so stacked against the consumer that it's often difficult to offer good legal advice, said John Davisson, director of litigation at the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

“The consumer is presented with this contract and really doesn’t have an opportunity to negotiate the terms," Davisson said. "It’s yes or no.”

Kanokporn Tangsuan's family says in the lawsuit that the 42-year-old New York doctor had a fatal allergic reaction after eating at an Irish pub in Disney Springs.

The lawsuit claims Tangsuan and her husband, Jeffrey Piccolo, and his mother decided to eat at Raglan Road in October 2023 because it was billed on Disney's website as having “allergen free food.”

The suit alleges Tangsuan informed their server numerous times that she had a severe allergy to nuts and dairy products, and that the waiter “guaranteed” the food was allergen-free.

About 45 minutes after finishing their dinner, Tangsuan had difficulty breathing while out shopping, collapsed and died at a hospital, according to the lawsuit.

A medical examiner determined she died as a result of “anaphylaxis due to elevated levels of dairy and nut in her system,” the lawsuit said.

Disney said in a statement this week that it is “deeply saddened” by the family's loss but stressed that the Irish pub, which also is being sued, is neither owned nor operated by the company.

More notably from a consumer protection standpoint, Disney argues that Piccolo had agreed to settle any lawsuits against Disney out of court through arbitration when he signed up for a one-month trial of Disney+ in 2019 and acknowledged that he had reviewed the fine print.

“The first page of the Subscriber Agreement states, in all capital letters, that ‘any dispute between You and Us, Except for Small Claims, is subject to a class action waiver and must be resolved by individual binding arbitration’,” the company wrote in a motion seeking to have the case dismissed.

Arbitration allows people to settle disputes without going to court and generally involves a neutral arbitrator who reviews arguments and evidence before making a binding decision, or award.

Piccolo’s lawyer, in a response filed this month, argued that it was “absurd” to believe that the more than 150 million subscribers to Disney+ have waived all rights to sue the company and its affiliates in perpetuity — especially when their case has nothing to do with the popular streaming service.

While it's difficult to give consumers actionable advice when such agreements are so lopsided in favor of companies, Davisson suggested supporting lawmakers and regulators who are attentive to these issues.

The Federal Trade Commission has historically supported the idea of disclosure terms protecting companies, even though the agreements are often dense and hard for typical consumers to comprehend. But Davisson says there has been a shift among policymakers and federal regulators.

“Generally, it’s understood that it is literally impossible for consumers to read and interpret and fully understand all of the contracts that they’re being asked and expected by the law to agree to and abide by as they go about their day,” he said. “Especially in an increasingly online world in which we’re interacting with dozens or hundreds of platforms and services a day.”
