Ph.D Admission - JUNE/JULY 2024 SESSION

Admission and eligibility for ph.d degree program.

Dayananda Sagar University (DSU) offers PhD Programs in various disciplines. The University has well qualified faculty members to supervise research scholars and lead them to their Doctoral degree. These programs are available in both the full time and part time modes. DSU believes in the importance of interdisciplinary research and hence encourages scholars to pursue their work in socially relevant interdisciplinary areas.

Applications are invited for registration to the following Full Time/Part Time Research Programmes :

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

  • The number of available seats in the various specializations under different disciplines is published in the link   Research Supervisor's List
  • The candidate desirous of pursuing Ph.D. degree shall discuss with one of the Supervisor List as per the above link and submit the application through proper approval from the chairman/ dean of the respective department/school.
  • The Entrance Test application form and the necessary details are available at the end of this page.
  • The selection of Ph D scholars is done based on the performance in the Entrance Test and the Interview conducted by an Expert Panel in the chosen discipline.
  • However, the candidates should get min 50% in the aggregate, in the Entrance Test to become eligible for the interview.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks (from 50% to 45% in the case of PG degree Holders OR 70% to 65% in the case of 4-year Degree holders) is allowed for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non Creamy Layers)/Differently-abled category as per the MHRD (UGC) notification F. No. 1-1/2002/(PS)Exempt(PT. FI. III) Vol-II dated 28th August 2018.
  • Selection of Scholars in a discipline is done strictly based on the rank list prepared in that discipline by adding the performance of the candidates in the Entrance Test and interview.

a) Dayananda Sagar University Ph. D Entrance Test : The University will conduct Entrance Test of 120 marks for 3 hours duration as under: The syllabi of various disciplines for the Entrance Test for candidates other than those who have qualified UGC-JRF/UGC-NET/ UGC-CSIR JRF/ UGC-CSIR NET / SLET / GATE or hold teacher fellowship are in the tab “Entrance Test Syllabus”

b) Interview by an Expert Panel : The candidates shortlisted based on the performance in the Entrance Test will submit their Research Proposal with the help of the Supervisor (and Co-supervisor, if any) and present before an Expert Panel set up by the University in the chosen discipline.

Duration of the Program 

  • PhD program will be for a minimum duration of THREE/FOUR years for the candidates with PG Qualification, including coursework for FULL TIME/PART TIME scholars from the date of Ph D Registration.
  • Candidates with 4-year degree will have FOUR/FIVE years duration including coursework for FULL TIME/PART TIME scholars from the date of Ph. D. Registration.
  • Extension of ONE year for both the FULL TIME and PART TIME Scholars from the date of registration beyond the above limits shall be permitted based on the recommendation of the Research Supervisor and the Research Advisory Committee concerned.

TUTION FEE 

  • Rs 72,000/- for the first year to be paid during the admission
  • Rs 62,000/- for the second and the subsequent years to be paid in the start of the year
  • USD 2,450/- per year to be paid at the start of the year for NRI and Foreign candidates

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

  •  A candidate who has obtained Master’s degree (Engineering, Sciences, Commerce & Management, and Health Sciences) from Dayananda Sagar University or any other University recognized as equivalent securing not less than 55% of the aggregate marks prescribed for the examination, or its equivalent grade (in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and passed entrance examination for the PhD degree program, shall be eligible for admission to the PhD Degree Course.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, or an equivalent relaxation of grade will be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled categories.
  • A candidate with M. Phil Degree of this University or any other University recognized as equivalent thereto in the concerned or cognate subject shall also be eligible for admission to the PhD Degree course, after passing the entrance examination as prescribed.
  • A candidate, who has obtained a 4-year degree such as B.E/B.Tech/B.S/BSc (Research) or any other 4-year UGC recognized degree with minimum 70% aggregate marks (or equivalent grade point average) will be eligible to directly apply for Ph.D. Programme.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 70% to 65%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade will be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled categories

Ph.D in Inter-Disciplinary Area .

  • The University encourages interdisciplinary research leading towards awarding of PhD degree, for such students who have Master’s degree in appropriate subjects securing not less than 55%
  • 4-year degree in appropriate subjects securing not less than 70% of the aggregate marks prescribed for the examination, or its equivalent grade (in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) AND
  • A Pass in entrance examination for the PhD degree course, shall be eligible for admission to the PhD Degree Course.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks or an equivalent relaxation of grade will be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled categories.
  • The candidate shall submit the title of the research area and the research proposal along with his/her application.
  • The degree shall be awarded in the discipline in which the candidate has registered to Ph.D. program. Further Supervisor and Co-Supervisor (if any) may be assigned from appropriate discipline.
  • Full Time Ph. D Candidates having 4 / 5-year UG or 5-year integrated masters or 2-year Master’s degree with CGPA 7.5 and above (on a 10-point scale) OR equivalent with a waiver of 0.5 CGPA in case of SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/EWS/Differently-abled candidates are eligible to apply for the position of full-time scholars with fellowship.
  • The candidates shall have some research orientation with proven credentials apart from clearing the Admission Process with excellent scores.

STIPEND/FELLOWSHIP :

The details of the Fellowship in selected disciplines ( CS&E, E&CE, Mechanical Engg., Aerospace Engg, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Management Studies and Pharmaceutical Sciences) are in the below table:

Year as well as 2 year as Junior Research Fellow (JRF) and year and 6 to 8 hours work per week as recommended by the concerned School of Study (such as a teaching / research assistant to a regular faculty for question bank preparation, project guidance, handling tutorials, collecting teaching materials, solving and grading the assignments, preparing presentations, research paper reviews and monitoring industry visits)

As associate director at the National Eye Institute's Office of International Programs - Office of Global Health, Dr. John Prakash plays a key role in overseeing his Institute's international involvement in eye disease research and training. He previously held senior positions at AMAR International and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals' International Division. He earned a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and received postdoctoral training in biotechnology at the University of California, Los Angeles, Medical School and the CDC. He earned an M.B.A. in pharmaceutical management at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.

What is your perspective on the need for global health research into eye conditions?

Eye conditions affect so much of the population at some point in our lives, whether at birth; as we age, as with macular degeneration; or as a condition brought on by another disease, such as diabetes. That's what makes the research we conduct and support so essential. And we at NEI are committed to taking a global approach. The vision research community is very active in many parts of the world - such as China, India, Brazil, the U.K., Germany and many other countries - and we are looking for discoveries from wherever they may arise. International research can inform us about diseases that are prevalent in many different parts of the world.

Overall, we are emphasizing high-quality science, including molecular biology, genetics and clinical research programs, where we can collaborate and learn from the scientists who are driving the research advances. For many years, NEI has fostered an active interest in international research, collaboration and training, managed through a special office within the Institute. Today, one of our main goals is to sustain a vigorous international research environment, expand collaborations in vision research among different countries and support international partnerships that are providing scientific value to the NEI programs.

How does NEI research address the enormous disease burden in low- and middle-income countries?

Eye diseases are prevalent around the world. No area is free from blindness, although most blindness occurs in developing countries. What's more, up to 80 percent of blindness is preventable. We want to work with the global research and health care communities to stop vision loss before it happens. Much of what we learn about eye health comes from performing global research and from studying specific patient populations, such as pediatric or elderly patients. Country- or region-specific research might provide more in-depth answers to the causes of blindness.

What is the makeup of NEI's international and global portfolio?

We have underway more than 50 international collaborations, projects, affiliations and other engagements on all six continents. The heaviest concentration of our collaborative engagements is in Asia, which accounts for about 40 percent, while 35 percent of our global initiatives are in Europe and the rest are elsewhere. In India, for example, the Aravind Eye Hospital is working with the U.S. Cleveland Clinic to identify primary open-angle glaucoma biomarkers. And Harvard University is collaborating with the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute to develop pluripotent stem cells for eye diseases and with Sankara Nethralaya in genetic studies. It's a very exciting time to be working in this area.

How does NEI plan to foster the next generation of global health scientists?

One of NEI's key global health goals is to develop human capital in the U.S., so we're ready to meet whatever needs arise in vision research and training. This means supporting excellent mentors to train the next generation of scientists and professionals. In fact, the NEI has a record of training numerous scientists in our intramural labs who have returned to their original countries. Several have become leaders there. We are currently training 66 international scientists and fellows in NEI's intramural labs, generally one or two from a given country, but 16 from China, 15 from India and 8 from Korea. In the past two years, 18 trainees have completed their studies and returned to their homes to continue their careers in global health and vision research.

We also manage an NIH-wide effort, the Khorana-Nirenberg Scholars Program, to train scientists of exceptional ability and potential as leaders in their countries. The training is in any field, not necessarily eye research. Once they are established in their countries, there is a high probability they will continue to conduct research, train others at home, and create long-term partnerships, including many with colleagues in the U.S.

At the time of registration as also your subsequent access/use of the Site/Application, the Site/Application shall be entitled to collect personally identifiable information about you, including details such as your first and last name, email address, mobile phone number and other contact details, demographic profile (like your age, gender, address, etc.,), as also other information you enter into our system when using the Application/Services/Site, such as while asking doubts, participating in discussions, presentations, etc. and taking tests (including mock tests) and transaction-related information, such as when you make purchases or respond to any offers. The Site / Application has the right to collect and analyse data and other information relating to use of various aspects of the Services (including without limitation User data and data derived therefrom). The Site / Application is also entitled to:- (a) seek, collect and process information pertaining to the marks / scores Users obtain in any exams (including mock tests) they undertake, exam results, ranking etc.; (b) exclusive rights in and over any studies, analysis, performance analytics (including meta data) pertaining to and/or based on information of the Users (including any class or category of such Users).

2.2 If you choose to link your social media account with your Account or provide registration/user details of any other website including Government sites, we collect basic information about you from those social media platforms or any other website as mentioned, such as name, age, gender, location, e-mail address, status, etc. In addition to the above, the Application/Site may collect/elicit certain information automatically which shall include, but not limited to, the type of mobile device you use, the IP address of your mobile device/personal computer, the operating system of your mobile device/personal computer, etc. The information collected may be used for the following, amongst other, purposes:

2.2.1 Providing or making available the Services (including sharing such information with our third-party service providers in connection with the provision of the Services);

3.2.2 Availability at your end of the devices/hardware that is compatible with the Application/Site (as may be modified from time to time). You shall be responsible for ensuring your devices/hardware compatibility for the purposes of accessing the Site / Applications in a safe and secure manner and we shall not be responsible/liable for the same.

3.2.3 Your continued adherence to these Terms of Services at all times.

3.3 You are solely responsible for protecting the confidentiality of your Account’s credentials viz. username and password (you will be required to change the default password before commencing access to the Course and the password you set is distinct and unique to you, and the Site / Application does not have any access to the same). Any activity under your Account accessed through the use or application of your password will be deemed to have been done by you. 5.2 In addition to the above, we reserve the right to review your Account from time to time for fraud prevention, risk assessment, security or investigation purposes. Can I enrol for PhD from SGVU even if I do not have a Masters/PG degree?

Even if you do not have a Masters/PG degree, you will be able to apply for the PhD programme if you have

  • Any B.Tech./ B.E. / B. Pharm. / B.Sc. (4 years) / BHMCT (Hotel Management and Catering Technology) or equivalent 4 years Bachelors degree in the relevant stream with a minimum aggregate of 7.5 GPA or 75% and above from a recognized university AND minimum working experience of 5 years in relevant field. OR
  • Any B.Sc. / BBA / B.Com. / B.A. or 3 years Bachelors degree in the relevant stream with a minimum aggregate of 7.5 GPA or 75% and above from a recognized university AND minimum working experience of 5 years in relevant field. However, such candidates must also earn 40 additional credits in one year before/with the course work.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks from specified eligibility shall be allowed for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layers)/Differently-abled categories, by the University.

What is the process to secure admission into this programme?

You will be required to fill an application form and upload all the relevant supporting documents. Your application form along with the supporting credentials will be reviewed by the admissions team and you will be intimated if you are eligible to enroll for the programme. You will also have to appear for an entrance test and attend a Personal Interview as a part of the selection process. Can I pursue my PhD in any area of my interest?

Your research area needs to necessarily fall under the Faculty of your Masters degree and upon successful completion, the PhD will be awarded under the same faculty only. You are free to combine your main subject with other subjects in different areas but your research proposal needs to be in the primary subject mentioned in the Masters degree. For eg. You will be considered ineligible to pursue a PhD in the Biotechnology if your Masters Degree is an MBA that falls under the Faculty of Management and not under the Faculty of Biotechnology.

Many companies have already shown their interest in 2022 passing out batches because in SGVU, a team of highly experienced professionals and a well-organized Training & Placement Department works day and night, to ensure fruitful and record creating results for the students. As a student of the Ph.D (by Research) programme at SGVU, you will be eligible to participate in the placement related events organized by the University.

When will the classes for the upcoming batch start?

Depending upon your final selection into the programme subsequent to the submission of your research proposal, entrance test and personal interview, you will be communicated about the session commencement dates.

Is there any loan or financial assistance option that I can avail of?

Yes, we have associations with financial service providers. Should you require any assistance with financial loans, our Program Advisor will be happy to support you with the guidelines for the same. However, the decision to grant the loan will depend on the adequacy of documents submitted and will be at the sole discretion of the respective financing agency/bank. The loan itself will be based on a mutual agreement exclusively between you and the financing agency/bank and SGVU will have no role whatsoever in this financing arrangement between the two parties. 

What are the system requirements needed to do this course?

  • Laptop or desktop with basic specifications. However, in order to optimize your learning experience, we recommend that you have the following,
  • Internet speed of 1 Mbps minimum (preferable wired connection).
  • Supporting OS – Window 7, Window 8, Widows 10, Safari & Mac OS.
  • Recommended Browser – Google Chrome and Firefox
  • Recommended Device – Laptop or Desktop (Avoid using Mobile or Ipad)
  • Functional web cam, microphone and speaker enabled on your laptop/desktop
  • Latest Adobe flash player should be installed in your system.
  • Any other technical requirements that may be needed at a later stage will be communicated towards the commencement of those courses. 

What if I am unable to complete the programme in 3 years?

You are required to successfully complete the programme within a maximum of 6 years from the FIRST REGISTRATION to be eligible for award of the degree, failing which, the admission to this programme becomes void.

What happens if I miss an examination?

If you miss an examination, you can take the same in the next available semester as backlog courses as per the University’s examinations schedule.

What happens if I miss a semester?

If you miss an entire semester, then you can re-start the degree with the missed semester along with the next batch, subject to prior approval from SGVU. This will be treated as Readmission and you will be required to pay an additional readmission fee.

How will the exams be conducted for this programme?

End semester exams will be held at the University campus and submission of semester progress report through seminar and presentation will be compulsory twice in a year. Assessment will also be done on the basis of Continuous Internal Evaluation. 

What is the minimum requirement for me to be awarded a Ph.D?

A student is required to successfully complete all the required coursework prescribed for this programme. Students must also publish research papers as per the specified guideline in addition to successfully submitting the thesis and clearing the viva. The details of each requirement will be shared upon enrolment and upon successful completion of the mandated requirements students will be awarded a Ph.D.

How do I receive my final degree?

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will need to coordinate with SGVU and collect the final degree directly from SGVU, either in person or via post. 

What is the Refund Policy for this programme?

SGVU follows the UGC policy in respect of ‘Admission Withdrawal & Fee Refund’ The SGVU Notifications viz. No. SGVU/REG/2014-15/1012, dated 23 Jan 2015, No. F.3(1)ACAD/SGVU/2018/9858, dated 29th Dec 2018, and the UGC Notification of Dec. 2016. No refund requests will be considered or processed once your academic session commences. Also, please note that in cases where you may be eligible for refund, only the programme fee will be refunded in accordance with UGC’s refund policy and Fee for Admission Form, Application Processing and Enrolment Fee is not refundable.

If I have any queries about the program, who can I contact?

Any queries you have regarding the programme, or the admission process may be directed to our Program Advisors at +91 9355301026. Once your admission to the course is confirmed, a dedicated Student Relationship Manager (SRM) will be assigned to you, and you may raise all subsequent queries and clarifications with the assigned SRM.

Do I have to pay any other additional charges for final thesis presentation?

At the time of final thesis presentation, a sum of Rs.10,500 is payable to SGVU towards the thesis presentation and plagiarism check.

Can I complete the PhD in less than three years?

The UGC requires the duration to be a minimum of three years. It cannot be completed in lesser time. 

I have completed my course work at another university, can I be exempted?

The coursework is mandatory and must be completed with SGVU. The earlier course work does not apply here. 

I have published papers earlier, may I use them to bypass the paper publication requirements?

The papers must be published during your time with SGVU only. Previous publications do not qualify for this.

I have cleared NET/GATE, may I be exempted from written test?

Yes, you need not appear for the written test, only interview must be attended.

Candidates seeking admission in PhD Program should have Master's degree with minimum 55% marks in the relavent field.

Entrance Exam :  SGVUEE/JRF/ NET

Course Details

  • 5% relaxation in qualifying exam percentage will be given in case of candidates belonging to reserved category.
  • Examination Fee for School of Education will be 3000/-per Semester.
  • Exam, Enrolment & Community Fee is included in all the program fee except the program mentioned in school of education.
  • Admission Form Fee of Rs 1100/-
  • Doctoral program (Ph.D.) is available in each Stream. A separate entrance exam is conducted twice in a year.
