A Night Celebrating Golden Thesis Film Projects in Hollywood

Golden Thesis Film Festival

The inaugural Golden Thesis Film Festival and awards ceremony celebrated thesis projects from the Film Production Program

The first annual Golden Thesis Awards Ceremony is an alumni and student showcase of 2020-2022 thesis and original short films with a writer, producer, director, cast or theme featuring a diverse voice. This includes creatives of all backgrounds, including ethnicity, culture, gender identity and members of the LGBTQ+ community. The festival is organized by the Career Development and Film Departments with the purpose of championing dynamic and diverse storytellers who have or are currently studying at The L.A. Film School. In its first year, the festival received 49 original shorts or thesis film submissions from students and alumni. Film Majors Resource Guide

Resource materials and guidelines for Film Majors

Academic Thesis

You must submit a hard copy and an electronic copy of your essay to the Film Department ([email protected]) as well as follow submission instructions in this handbook.

  • Ask a faculty member to mentor you. You may work either with the Faculty of the Film Department, or—with the permission of the Chair–faculty from another Vassar department. You must meet with your advisor 2-3 times during the semester before you write your thesis to narrow your focus and compile a bibliography.
  • For theses written in the Fall semester: an initial draft is due at the end of classes; the final draft is due in the second week of the B semester. Theses written in Spring (B) semester are due during study period.
  • Theses are given letter grades.
  • The thesis should be between 40-80 pages in length. Sample theses linked to our web site: Student Work
  • You should bind your paper with a press-back binder. Only one copy needs to be bound. The title of your project, your name, and the name of your advisor should appear on the outside cover.
  • Include a title page. A table of contents is optional.
  • Extensive, thorough research is expected. Include a bibliography citing all books and articles used in your thesis. You do not need a filmography. Use Chicago Manual of Style Endnotes and Bibliography: see Chicago Manual of Style Citation Guide
  • Double-space the text, but single-space and indent 5 spaces on the right and left any lengthy quotations. Quotation marks are not needed for indented quotations.
  • Margins on all sides, including the bottom, must be at least 1”. Leave a wider margin at the left to allow for binding.
  • Illustrations, e.g. frame grabs, may be included. They should be labeled and inserted in the written text close to your analysis, not at the end of the chapter.
  • The department expects that you will give a brief presentation about your thesis at the Projects and Screenings Presentations in May. This can include clips, Powerpoint or Prezi slides, etc.
  • Please see the Theses Permission Slip at the bottom of this page for further information about how Vassar retains thesis projects.

Screenplay Thesis

You must submit a hard copy and an electronic copy of your screenplay to the Film Department ([email protected]) as well as follow submission instructions in this handbook.

  • Ask a faculty member to mentor you.  You must meet with your advisor at least 4-5 times during the semester.
  • You must complete at least 3 rounds of revisions under the guidance of your mentor.
  • For theses written in the Fall semester, an initial draft is due at least 2 weeks prior to the end of classes; a second draft is due at the end of classes; and the final draft is due the second week of the Spring semester. For theses written in the Spring semester, an initial draft is due 2 weeks prior to the end of classes; a second draft is due at the end of classes; and the final draft is due by the end of the study period.
  • You should bind your paper in the press-back binder (ask in the Film Office, we have a box of extras). Only one copy need be bound. The title of your screenplay, your name, and the name of your advisor should appear on the outside cover. Also include a standard title page to your screenplay.
  • The format of the screenplay itself must adhere to professional standards and practices laid out at Oscars.org Screenwriting Resources or in The Complete Screenwriter’s Manual (Longman, 2006).
  • A Critical Introduction of 5-10 pages in length, contextualizing your script within film history. Elements to consider are, but not limited to, the thematic treatment, historical context, genre designation, and formal structure of your project. For example, if your screenplay is neo-realist, film-noir tale of revenge that inverts gender stereotypes, unpack this intent in your Critical Introduction. Include a bibliography citing all books, articles, and films referenced in your thesis. Use Chicago Manual of Style Endnotes and Bibliography: see Chicago Manual of Style Citation Guide
  • A 5-10 page treatment of your film, i.e. a prose synopsis of your story.
  • The department expects that you will give a brief presentation about your thesis at the Projects and Screenings Presentations in May.

Senior Theses

Film Studies Policy on Senior Theses:

Film Studies majors are not required to complete senior thesis projects to fulfill their major program of study. All majors are instead required to take a senior seminar on an advanced topic of study. However, large percentages of majors do opt for a senior thesis, which can take the form of a written history thesis, a screenplay, a 16mm film, a digital video, or a virtual filmmaking project. Senior theses provide majors with the opportunity to advance what they have learned in their previous coursework through an extended individual project. Film Studies maintains a rigorous approach to evaluating theses, but also provides close, one-on-one advising. Prizes exist for all forms of senior thesis work. A senior thesis is a privilege that we try to extend to all majors.

The Film Studies Department does not allow students to undertake a single film-related thesis that will be evaluated by faculty in both Film Studies and another department or that will be shared between departments in any way. Normally, students who double major should choose to embark on a thesis in Film Studies or on a separate, unrelated thesis in their other major. Since Film Studies does not require a senior thesis, and encourages double majors, we will in no way prevent a student from completing an entirely separate thesis in their other major. We contact majors in spring of their junior year for a detailed discussion regarding any aspect of their plans for a senior project.

Guidelines for 16mm, Digital Video, and Virtual Theses:

  • All projects must be 12 minutes in length. Write a 12-minute screenplay.
  • Crew members must all be students enrolled at Wesleyan. You may not use students from other schools, alumni, or professionals to work on your film.
  • Shooting must be done within a 50-mile radius of campus.
  • All projects must be completed by the date of the Senior Thesis Deadline. If you do not meet the Senior Thesis Deadline, you may not show your project at year’s end, and it will be up to your individual instructor to decide whether or not you will receive credit.

The making of movies, as well as the art form, is known as cinematography (or cinema, in short). The film is considered a work of art. SOC Film Thesis Project Cataloging

General information:

  • The Media specialist will bring DVDs and thesis project submission forms to cataloger when new thesis projects have been received.  Once cataloging work is complete, cataloger should return DVDs and forms to media specialist.
  • A spreadsheet listing all SOC film thesis projects is located on the I drive.  (I:\Arch2\Theses\SOC Masters Theses)  When you have cataloged the item, place a “Y” in the “cataloged” column.  You may want to consult the information on this spreadsheet, in addition to the information on the submission form and on the piece itself.  Although the DVD should be the primary source of information, in some cases the advisor and/or date are not listed on the piece.  You could then supply them from these supporting materials.
  • A good resource for video cataloging is the DVD cataloging guide created by Online Audiovisual Catalogers and found here: http://www.olacinc.org/drupal/capc_files/DVD_guide_final.pdf    This workflow document will refer to these instructions.
  • See separate instructions for cataloging SOC screenplays.

1. Log into OCLC Connexion.  From the  Cataloging  menu, choose  Create--Single Record--Visual Materials.

2. Next, apply the constant data for SOC film thesis projects.  From the  Edit  menu choose  Constant Data--Online--Apply by Name.   In the pop-up box, type “soc” and be sure to click the button next to “both” under Choose MARC fields to apply.  Click OK.

3. View the DVD, examining at minimum the menus and opening and closing credits. Supply and/or edit the following descriptive information.

        A.  Fixed field :

  • Edit “Tech” if technique is other than live action (e.g. animation, or a mix of live action and animation).
  • Supply “Time” in minutes, rounding up and using leading zeroes if less than 100 minutes.
  • Supply “Date” from the film itself.  If no date appears in the film, supply the submission date.
  • Change “Lang” if primary language is other than English.

        B.  007

  • $d If film is entirely black and white, change to “b”.
  • $e If disc is Blu-ray or HD-DVD, change coding accordingly (see OLAC guide).
  • $i If configuration of playback channels is known, change accordingly (see OLAC guide).

        C.  041/546

  • If applicable, supply information about additional languages, captions, subtitles etc. as described in the OLAC guide.

         D.  049

  • Change to EAUN.

        E.  099/590

  • Add the DVD call number, which should appear in a single subfield a. Add additional call number with “THESIS” in the 590 field provides a note to assist media services staff with searching. Example:  099 _9 $a THESIS DVD 61

        590      $a THESIS 61

        F.  100

  • In this field, list the name of the primary creator of the film.  In most cases, this will be the student who submitted the item as his or her thesis project.  However, in some rare cases, this person will not be the primary creator.  Since this is “their” thesis project, we still want to highlight that ownership. Add relator terms, as appropriate, from the MARC relator term list:   http://www.loc.gov/marc/relators/relaterm.html

        G.  245

  • See the OLAC guide for information about entering the title and statement of responsibility.  Take these from the piece itself.  If varying titles are listed on the container, submission form, etc., add these in a 246.

        H.  264

  • This field should contain the date only, in subfield c.  If a date is not listed on the piece, supply the date from the submission form or spreadsheet in square brackets. Change the second indicator, as appropriate, to indicate the type of date given. (Refer to OCLC Bibformats for possible values.)

        I.  300

  • Supply the running time.  This often differs from the duration listed on the container and/or submission form.  In this case, add a 500 note, reading “Duration on container:...” The time in the fixed field should be rounded up from the actual running time. Edit $b, if information does not match item.

        J.  500/790

  • Add the name of the first-named project advisor. If the advisor name does not appear on the piece, supply from the submission form or spreadsheet.

        K.  520

  • Insert abstract here.  The film’s website, if available, sometimes includes a better summary than given on the submission form.  Use best judgment and copy and paste from spreadsheet or film’s website, or transcribe from submission form or container.

L.   538

  • Change to Blu-ray, HD DVD, DVD-R, if appropriate.

M.  508/511

  • Add notes for any additional creators and performers not listed in 245 $c. (See p. 21 of the OLAC guide for additional information.)

        N.  700/710

  • Add name headings for creators, producers, and performers listed in 245 $c, 508 and 511. Add appropriate relator terms from the controlled list.

4. Add appropriate subject headings and genre terms, for documentary films.  For fictional films, only genre terms are needed.  Common examples include:

655 _7 Documentary films. $2 lcgft

655 _7 Short films. $2 lcgft
