Innovation in the Local Context: A Case Study of BYD in China
2018, International Journal of Innovation and Technology Management
In this paper, we have used the case of build your dream (BYD) to examine firm innovation in the context of China. From a historical perspective, with its strategic diversification from battery to mobile phone manufacturing to automobile manufacturing, we find that BYD has been innovative in its production method, vertical integration strategy, and design of product for local customers. The effective understanding and leveraging of local contextual factors including supply of labor (especially low cost-highly skilled labor), growing middle class, and local industry environments have played important roles in BYD's innovation in China.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the internationalization of Chinese new global players through innovation-oriented Mergers and Acquisitions (M&As). Design/methodology/approach The paper combines the analysis of East-Asian and Chinese multinationals’ international expansion within international business (IB) and innovation domains, with the “latecomer” perspective. It is a conceptual contribution, based on the role of local institutions and firm’s absorptive capacity. A theoretical framework is developed, and further elucidated with two illustrative cases of Chinese M&As abroad in the automotive sector. Implications for theoretical development and practical application are then drawn. Findings Chinese firms’ M&As abroad have become one of the preferential modes of developing innovation capabilities. The success of these endeavors is argued to be the result of a combination of a strong push from government industrial policies, along with significant internal knowledge ...

The study aims to determine what are the major factors affecting the performance of innovation systems in both high-and low-tech industries in China. Multiple regression and PLS analyses were used to analyse a survey data from 152 manufacturers in China. This study showed that internal R&D and competitors are the major drivers of innovation that improves the sales of new-to-market products. Major barriers of innovation include law regulations, standards and tax issues and the potential market being owned by other firms. The motivating factors include new market entry, improvement of product quality, and increase in market share. Low-tech and high-tech firms may follow different innovation paths and are promoted by differential sources of innovation, barriers and motivating factors. Some innovation activities such as acquisition of external knowledge and preparations are found to have significant mediating effects on the above relationships. The research project brings about specific guidelines for local legislative bodies to enact effective innovation policies that align closely with the innovation characteristics of local industries.

Abstract. Based on the example of the automobile and electronics sector in China, the article examines the technological learning of companies in China and the way it is influenced by industrial policy. Companies have consolidated their production capacity and technological learning but are rarely in a position to develop an innovation capability. The article shows the diversity of enterprises and identifies two opposing modes of development, either based on technological transfers of foreign technologies mainly through state-owned enterprises or based on assimilation and learning of technologies acquired through the clients in private or foreign-owned companies or other new enterprises of a rather small size. The latter are less favored by official policies and have difficulty obtaining the advantages that may have been available through the national innovation system (training, higher education, research, technical centers, funding). This separation of the innovation system promot...
This short and easily comprehensible text is my introductionary attempt at writing a philosophical treatise. I have tried to explicate the diachronic issues and obstacles that stand in the way of the development of our species. The text is by no means exhaustive, and it does not propose any solutions to those problems, nor does it acknowledge any philosophical standpoints that have already tried to tackle them. All of this will eventually be present in the final treatise, thoroughly expanded. For now, let the text serve the function of a holistic introduction to the human species from the logistical perspective: what problems are we destined to face, and how does that correlate to the way we have chosen to organize our world? Are there any transhistorical Great Problems that come to your mind? I am curious about your opinions and any constructive criticism, this is a topic worth discussing.

The case focuses on the growth of electric vehicle (EV) market in China and the emergence of BYD as a major player aspiring to gain a significant foothold in global EV markets. The case traces the growth of the industry in China, identifying factors that have contributed to the rise of Chinese companies in this industry. In doing so, it offers a rich portrait of the industry landscape encompassing contextual factors, including the role of government and governmental subsidies to the industry, the intensity of competitive rivalry shaping the race for Chinese market share, and the nature of buyers and how their demands have forced Chinese companies to hone their skills in design and value engineering, which can be used to mount an assault in global markets. After providing a broad discussion of the industry, the case delves deeper into the strategic choices made by BYD as it rose to the top ranks of global players in units produced. The case closes with broad questions about the directions that BYD could pursue as it seeks to conquer advanced country markets from its China homebase. In doing so, the case sets the stage for debate on issues relating to transferability of home-grown advantages, the entry barriers that they will confront in markets such as the United States, and ways in which the barriers can be overcome.
Learning Objectives
The case is ideally suited for classes in strategic management with an emphasis on global strategies. It can also be used in classes that cover issues on cross-border trade.
