It really depends on the essay topic, both how interested I am in the topic as well as how easy it is to access sources for that research topic. I don't usually count the hours I spend working on something, either, but the days. Generally, a 1,500 word paper might take me 1-3 days to complete, but if it's a topic I've been assigned and didn't choose myself, and I struggle with disinterest in the topic, I might procrastinate a bit or spend more time looking for sources that maybe do interest me--even if the topic is pretty bland, sometimes you can find some interesting things to cite.

In the reverse of procrastinating because I'm disinterested, if it's a topic I've chosen and I'm very interested in it, I might only take a couple hours to write it. There are topics I've written on in my undergrad where I was already very familiar with it, I already had plenty of books in my own collection that I have read and could cite, etc. so writing the paper was practically nothing.

[–] Jealous404 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (5 children)

if I ever get a Percy Jackson/greek myth related research paper in CC, I would be a straight A student 😅

[–] xPadawanRyan SSW Diploma | BA and MA History | PhD Human Studies Candidate 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (4 children)

Hey, it depends on the classes you take--during my undergrad I did take an English class where we studied children's literature, and I didn't even need to read any of the assigned readings because I had read all those books many times! I remember wanting to do my paper on Harry Potter since one of the books we were assigned was one of the Harry Potter books, but I ultimately decided to write about something else to be a bit more original.

(the fun thing about my paper, too, was that the prof wrote in her feedback that she did not agree with my argument whatsoever but I argued it very well so I got an A)

[–] Jealous404 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (3 children)

luckyy.. i'd probably choose some mythology class if i ever get a chance. love reading about those.

maybe the class will help me get on the path to become a fanfic writer /s

[–] xPadawanRyan SSW Diploma | BA and MA History | PhD Human Studies Candidate 2 points 3 points 4 points 29 days ago   (2 children)

I did actually take a Greek Mythology class during my undergrad! It was fascinating, the prof could have been better - he was a nice guy, just kinda monotone, and it was a 7pm-10pm class, so that sort of monotone was hard to stay awake through - but I did quite enjoy it. I was also a Percy Jackson fan in my early adult years--I was already in college when the first movie came out, but I enjoyed it enough to read the entire series, so that played a role in my interest.

And hey, no shame in fanfic writing--that is actually my main hobby!

[–] Jealous404 0 points 1 point 2 points 29 days ago   (1 child)

im still a pjo fan... i read the entire sequel 10 times (the 3 main ones) and i still have this huge crush on Artemis and I still ship Zartemis/Pertamis to this day bahaha... 😭

did you know theres a new series?!

and that's awesome! glad it worked out for you :))

[–] xPadawanRyan SSW Diploma | BA and MA History | PhD Human Studies Candidate 0 points 1 point 2 points 29 days ago   (0 children)

I did hear that there is a new series! I have not read it yet.

And fanfiction has just been my main thing for...well, I technically consider my first "fic" to be this Sailor Moon book I wrote 27 years ago, but I'd say that fanfiction has really been my main thing for about 20 years.

[–] Technical-Prize-4840 67 points 68 points 69 points 1 month ago   (1 child)

Probably about 3 or 4 hours a day for 4 days. So, somewhere around 12 to 16 hours total. This includes research time.

[–] Warrior504th 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

[–] Beneficial_Cat9225 College! 36 points 37 points 38 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

Like 3 to 5 hours depending on your research, writing, and typing skills.

[–] sophisticaden_ M.A. in English 30 points 31 points 32 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

1500? Not a lot.

[–] aniqa9 Graduate | Pharmacy 23 points 24 points 25 points 1 month ago   (7 children)

If you're a yapper, 1.5 hours. If not, 5 hours.

[–] Jealous404 2 points 3 points 4 points 1 month ago   (6 children)

Dude seriously. I just took 2 hours to finish my econ final essay last semester of 1k+ words and that was pure yapping... mind you I hate writing. Got an A or B lmao

[–] OldGreenlandShark 1 point 2 points 3 points 29 days ago   (0 children)

There’s nothing I love more than a captive audience.

Of course, it’s a different story when it’s a subject I don’t like. I will take five days to write five hundred words if I can.

[–] aniqa9 Graduate | Pharmacy 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (4 children)

Ong this is the only way. Grammarly + quillbot for grammar, boom A- essay

it only works if you're a yapper irl, and online XD

irl- you know how to form proper sentences (lessens the need to buy editing tools if you can proofread it yourself)

online- you know how to type/write until your hands feel like dying

[–] aniqa9 Graduate | Pharmacy 0 points 1 point 2 points 29 days ago   (2 children)

Ig depends on programs, mine is heavily research based so I never have time to proofread and repeat the same thing throughout my paper right before deadline, so it def helps when you’re on your 8th cup of coffee 😃

[–] Jealous404 0 points 1 point 2 points 29 days ago   (0 children)

ignore my old reply. didnt see the context. but damn 8th cup, i'd passed out at 4 (never tried that many but max i can handle is 400mg a day) 😅

[–] Imaginary-Monitor689 6 points 7 points 8 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

The trick is to do your research as you go and have atleast some bullet and reference points. Once you began writing it’ll take you maybe 3-4 hours and take some time to cool off and come back for corrections

[–] _idkwhattowritehere_ 27 points 28 points 29 points 1 month ago   (1 child)

1 or 2 hours maximum. If you know where to search stuff, it does not take long.

[–] AbbyIsATabby History Education 4 points 5 points 6 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

It depends on the amount of research I have to conduct to do it. I’d say probably split a couple hours a day over a few days. A day or two for research, one for planning/outlining/starting rough draft, and another day for finishing the rough draft and doing the final edits. Ive done it in 2 days as well if I take a break between drafting and editing, but the fastest was an all nighter I’m not proud of during my first semester. I haven’t done an all nighter since, though I still did really good on that paper.

[–] CunnyMaggots MPH - 43 y/o 4 points 5 points 6 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

2, maybe 3 hours, depending on how many sources I need, and how the paper needs to be formatted.

[–] heyuhitsyaboi YIKES 2 points 3 points 4 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

According to other comments here, it seems like the answer varies drastically depending on several variables:

  • The complexity of the topic(s)
  • your familiarity of the topic
  • how accessible/digestible information on the topic is
  • how thorough you want to be

I would expect 6-12 hours in total for a decent paper, and upwards of 16 for something very complex and/or thorough. 12 seems to be the sweet-spot

[–] llamawithguns 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

Like 12 but that's mostly because I'm a perfectionist and will probably rewrite half the paper at least once before I'm finished

[–] little-cosmic-hobo 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 month ago   (2 children)

It really depends on the topic and the types of sources you’re using. A year or so ago, i had a final paper discussing the history of the Petra ruins and how they are represented in popular culture. It ended up being 2200 words, and I did the whole thing in one 12-hour sitting. iirc I spent 7 of those hours just doing the research, because i had to go to the library and comb through all the books we had on the subject to find the very specific information i was looking for. Spent the next 4 hours writing the thing, and the final hour editing and citing my sources. And then on the flip side, for another research paper i did the whole thing (1300 words) in 2, maybe 2.5 hours? But it was easy because we were only allowed to use information from the class PowerPoints. So it was really just one long summary of what we had learned in class, plus a brief paragraph at the end where I was asked to provide my personal thoughts.

TLDR: it varies. the act of doing the research typically takes much more time than the actual writing.

[–] IWillFightRip 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 month ago   (1 child)

Tha is, this is helpful. I'm in an introductory English class and we are assigned broad topics to write on, but have to narrow the subject ourselves, and I'm finding the research portion to be incredibly time consuming, as I often have to read enough about the subject to know how to narrow it down, and then construct an argument. Once I've done all the reading the writing portion is relatively quick.

[–] little-cosmic-hobo 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

Glad this is helpful :] and yeah that’s so true. That was the exact case for my Petra paper— we were allowed to pick any ancient site, and I picked Petra bc it looked cool and I knew nothing about it at all. Now that I think about it, for that one 12-hour estimate, I didn’t even factor in the “pre-research” research— like you said, basically figuring out what I even wanted to say. I think I probably spent 2 hours narrowing down my topic and making an outline. So make that 14 hours total. Soooo even if you include editing and adding citations, that means I only spent 36% of the total time actually writing!

[–] Dewdlebawb 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

The most I spent on research for that six page was approximately 6 hours since I needed x amount of sources and they had to be verified

[–] bmadisonthrowaway 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

I tend to take 3-4 hours for research, a few more hours reading through sources in a more thorough way and taking notes to find quotes and key ideas to discuss, and probably twice that to draft the paper itself including proofreading, writing citations, and other fiddly bits.

I find that one aspect of a research paper that makes a huge difference is knowing how to find good sources quickly, vet the sources you find, and know the overall scope of research for a paper like this. It's easy to be inefficient by over-researching, reading too much, or getting bogged down in shitty waste of time resources. The goal is to get in, get what you need, and go write the paper.

[–] Relevant_Airline7076 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

That’s like 3 pages… pretending I know nothing of the topic and have to research from scratch, max 5 hours

[–] Agile_Pick_1597 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

If it’s a Science I’d say a couple hours, if it’s some bs English paper that requires research, then more.

[–] Taboo_Decimal 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

I’m say if it’s a new topic , with no prior knowledge. Access to the internet scholar articles. Like 3 hours minimum 7 hours max for a draft. The 2 to polish

[–] AFO1031 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

depends what the research is

about 1-3 hours of pure research, about 2-3 hours for my first draft, and then about 2 hours for every draft after that. I have done over 30 hours for a paper shorter than that before. I have also done over 60 hours. It really just depends.

btw, I do way more than necessary, I always try for my essays to be graduate level. I want to actually contribute something significant to the professor/grader

[–] Determined_Number814 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

Research essays may vary specifically on the topic, extent of the research required, sources, and planning to be able to summarize it into an essay. It’s not entirely difficult as long as you jot down some notes on the key points of your research, as it’ll help you come back to later when it comes to writing your paper. Go at your own pace, but be aware of the deadline. You don’t want to do everything all on the day before or on the day of the deadline.

[–] ghost-elk 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

at least 6 hours writing (1 per page double spaced with breaks) and at least an hour researching, maybe more depending on the topic. so not below 7 but could be higher, depending on subject, research needs, time constraints, and my mindset

[+] [deleted] 1 month ago   (1 child)

[–] Sullysteph 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

6-8 hours max. And usually I would just do it in one day but take 1 or 2 small breaks of 30 minutes

[–] concernedworker123 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

This does fluctuate a lot, but my general rule is 1 hour per page plus an additional hour for the bibliography. This doesn’t include editing time.

[–] Remarkable-Grab8002 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

That's an easy evening at this point. Usually papers are aligned with the content your already covering in class so if you've kept up on everything, most of the information should already be available to you. Or you should know where to find it.

[–] LatterAd4435 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

i do a shit ton of reading before i even open a word doc. ill leave every tab open that i found helpfull. research i usually give about an hour and note down small things i wanna remember on a note pad. the writing itself goes much easier when you have a lot of background info in your brain while you write, makes it so much quicker.

[–] Akamaikai 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

Anywhere between 3 hours and 5 months.

[–] lapetite_reine Student 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

If I'm being responsible and not procrastinating, probably 1-3 days for a few hours each. If I'm writing it the night before, 4-6 hours lol.

[–] The_Liberty_Kid 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

I'd say it depends on interest on the topic too. But probably 3-5 hours, if you already have the sources you want. But also depends on the person and actually sitting down to do it, but I think you should be able to nail out 500 words an hour.

[–] ssjisM_7 College! 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

If it's not something that I would particularly have a lot or knowledge in, it's probably a 2-3½ days max

The most I've written without being made to write is almost 5,000 words on invention ideas and why or why not it's a shitty idea.

[–] Senior-Breakfast6736 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

I’ll usually take a whole 12 hour day doing it

[–] Slugbugger30 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

My english 110 clas had us do a mock senior capstone project that ended up being 12-16 pages (4000) words. I would say clock around 4 hours for research and 4 for writing, and 6 for returning and editing

[–] MaximumIndustry1547 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

I don’t know where people are coming up from these numbers, you can get a 1.5k word research essay done in less than 3 hours if you genuinely focus for the majority of the time.

[–] Nobody_Knows_It 0 points 1 point 2 points 29 days ago   (0 children)

Depends on the expectations and complexity of the topic. For a research paper I'd probably spend most of my time collecting sources and organizing my info, maybe an hour or two for a few days. After that I'd take an afternoon or two to actually assemble and type out everything.

If I've instead procrastinated I'll probably stay up late one night collecting all my info then stick everything together the next day and hope all is well.

[–] Hoosteen_juju003 0 points 1 point 2 points 29 days ago   (0 children)

On the paper overall? Like 2 hours

[–] 6PurpleLeaf9 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

A maximum of 2-3 hours if that includes finding research papers and writing the citation in APA format. I always start research papers the night before it's due or the morning on when it's due lol.

[–] thedamfan 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

3-4 hours, including research and revising.

[–] WallowWispen 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 month ago   (0 children)

For finding the sources/ potential sources and outline? 3 hours if I don't have previous information. Once I've prepped everything I write the whole paper in about the same, but I left the information sit for a bit so I'm not regurgitating what I've found online. Checking citations long after writing it so the paper as a whole looks fresh in mind makes it easier to find mistakes, takes about an hour and a half. I spread it out so I'm not procrastinating at the last minute so this can be done within a week or more depending on deadlines and other assignments. So about 7 or more hours spread out over the course of a week.

[–] tata_barbbati -1 points 0 points 1 point 1 month ago   (0 children)

2 hours maximum

[–] Crazy-Plastic3133 -1 points 0 points 1 point 1 month ago   (0 children)

1500 word research essay is like a 2-3 hour affair maximum

source: entire undergrad was based on scientific research

[–] LaniakeaSuper -1 points 0 points 1 point 1 month ago   (0 children)

Seven hours, half of it is spend on phone. Lol

[–] Admirable_Hedgehog64 -1 points 0 points 1 point 1 month ago   (0 children)

Took me about 2 and half hours for an 8 research essay. Then it took me another hour and a half just for the citations. Only because the professor deducted 10 points per mistake on the citation.

[–] DustyButtocks -1 points 0 points 1 point 1 month ago   (0 children)

3-5 hours, depending on the topic.

[–] Pleasant-Drag8220 -1 points 0 points 1 point 1 month ago   (0 children)

I've found in my years of college that on average, a well researched and cited paper that I put a lot of effort into scores lower than a bunch of ChatGPT fluff that has no citations but has a high word count. I've stopped trying.

The Best College Essay Length: How Long Should It Be?

author image

College Essays

computer-1185626_640.jpg

Figuring out your college essay can be one of the most difficult parts of applying to college. Even once you've read the prompt and picked a topic, you might wonder: if you write too much or too little, will you blow your chance of admission? How long should a college essay be?

Whether you're a terse writer or a loquacious one, we can advise you on college essay length. In this guide, we'll cover what the standard college essay length is, how much word limits matter, and what to do if you aren't sure how long a specific essay should be.

How Long Is a College Essay? First, Check the Word Limit

You might be used to turning in your writing assignments on a page-limit basis (for example, a 10-page paper). While some colleges provide page limits for their college essays, most use a word limit instead. This makes sure there's a standard length for all the essays that a college receives, regardless of formatting or font.

In the simplest terms, your college essay should be pretty close to, but not exceeding, the word limit in length. Think within 50 words as the lower bound, with the word limit as the upper bound. So for a 500-word limit essay, try to get somewhere between 450-500 words. If they give you a range, stay within that range.

College essay prompts usually provide the word limit right in the prompt or in the instructions.

For example, the University of Illinois says :

"You'll answer two to three prompts as part of your application. The questions you'll answer will depend on whether you're applying to a major or to our undeclared program , and if you've selected a second choice . Each response should be approximately 150 words."

As exemplified by the University of Illinois, the shortest word limits for college essays are usually around 150 words (less than half a single-spaced page). Rarely will you see a word limit higher than around 650 words (over one single-spaced page). College essays are usually pretty short: between 150 and 650 words. Admissions officers have to read a lot of them, after all!

body-scale-cc0

Weigh your words carefully, because they are limited!

How Flexible Is the Word Limit?

But how flexible is the word limit? What if your poignant anecdote is just 10 words too long—or 100 too short?

Can I Go Over the Word Limit?

If you are attaching a document and you need one or two extra words, you can probably get away with exceeding the word limit by such a small amount. Some colleges will actually tell you that exceeding the word limit by 1-2 words is fine. However, I advise against exceeding the word limit unless it's explicitly allowed for a few reasons:

First, you might not be able to. If you have to copy-paste it into a text box, your essay might get cut off and you'll have to trim it down anyway.

If you exceed the word limit in a noticeable way, the admissions counselor may just stop reading your essay past that point. This is not good for you.

Following directions is actually a very important part of the college application process. You need to follow directions to get your letters of recommendation, upload your essays, send supplemental materials, get your test scores sent, and so on and so forth. So it's just a good general rule to follow whatever instructions you've been given by the institution. Better safe than sorry!

Can I Go Under the Word Limit?

If you can truly get your point across well beneath the word limit, it's probably fine. Brevity is not necessarily a bad thing in writing just so long as you are clear, cogent, and communicate what you want to.

However, most college essays have pretty tight word limits anyways. So if you're writing 300 words for an essay with a 500-word limit, ask yourself: is there anything more you could say to elaborate on or support your points? Consult with a parent, friend, or teacher on where you could elaborate with more detail or expand your points.

Also, if the college gives you a word range, you absolutely need to at least hit the bottom end of the range. So if you get a range from the institution, like 400-500 words, you need to write at least 400 words. If you write less, it will come across like you have nothing to say, which is not an impression you want to give.

body-writing-computer-orange-write

What If There Is No Word Limit?

Some colleges don't give you a word limit for one or more of your essay prompts. This can be a little stressful, but the prompts generally fall into a few categories:

Writing Sample

Some colleges don't provide a hard-and-fast word limit because they want a writing sample from one of your classes. In this case, a word limit would be very limiting to you in terms of which assignments you could select from.

For an example of this kind of prompt, check out essay Option B at Amherst :

"Submit a graded paper from your junior or senior year that best represents your writing skills and analytical abilities. We are particularly interested in your ability to construct a tightly reasoned, persuasive argument that calls upon literary, sociological or historical evidence. You should NOT submit a laboratory report, journal entry, creative writing sample or in-class essay."

While there is usually no word limit per se, colleges sometimes provide a general page guideline for writing samples. In the FAQ for Option B , Amherst clarifies, "There is no hard-and-fast rule for official page limit. Typically, we anticipate a paper of 4-5 pages will provide adequate length to demonstrate your analytical abilities. Somewhat longer papers can also be submitted, but in most cases should not exceed 8-10 pages."

So even though there's no word limit, they'd like somewhere in the 4-10 pages range. High school students are not usually writing papers that are longer than 10 pages anyways, so that isn't very limiting.

Implicit Length Guideline

Sometimes, while there's no word (or even page) limit, there's still an implicit length guideline. What do I mean by this?

See, for example, this Western Washington University prompt :

“Describe one or more activities you have been involved in that have been particularly meaningful. What does your involvement say about the communities, identities or causes that are important to you?”

While there’s no page or word limit listed here, further down on page the ‘essay tips’ section explains that “ most essay responses are about 500 words, ” though “this is only a recommendation, not a firm limit.” This gives you an idea of what’s reasonable. A little longer or shorter than 500 words would be appropriate here. That’s what I mean by an “implicit” word limit—there is a reasonable length you could go to within the boundaries of the prompt.

body-coffee-cc0

But what's the proper coffee-to-paragraph ratio?

Treasure Hunt

There is also the classic "treasure hunt" prompt. No, it's not a prompt about a treasure hunt. It's a prompt where there are no length guidelines given, but if you hunt around on the rest of the website you can find length guidelines.

For example, the University of Chicago provides seven "Extended Essay" prompts . You must write an essay in response to one prompt of your choosing, but nowhere on the page is there any guidance about word count or page limit.

However, many colleges provide additional details about their expectations for application materials, including essays, on FAQ pages, which is true of the University of Chicago. On the school’s admissions Frequently Asked Questions page , they provide the following length guidelines for the supplemental essays:

“We suggest that you note any word limits for Coalition or Common Application essays; however, there are no strict word limits on the UChicago Supplement essays. For the extended essay (where you choose one of several prompts), we suggest that you aim for around 650 words. While we won't, as a rule, stop reading after 650 words, we're only human and cannot promise that an overly wordy essay will hold our attention indefinitely. For the “Why UChicago?” essay, we suggest about 250-500 words. The ideas in your writing matter more than the exact number of words you use!”

So there you go! You want to be (loosely) in the realm of 650 for the extended essay, and 250-500 words for the “Why UChicago?” essay.

Help! There Really Is No Guidance on Length

If you really can't find any length guidelines anywhere on the admissions website and you're at a loss, I advise calling the admissions office. They may not be able to give you an exact number (in fact, they probably won't), but they will probably at least be able to tell you how long most of the essays they see are. (And keep you from writing a panicked, 20-page dissertation about your relationship with your dog).

In general, 500 words or so is pretty safe for a college essay. It's a fairly standard word limit length, in fact. (And if you're wondering, that's about a page and a half double-spaced.) 500 words is long enough to develop a basic idea while still getting a point across quickly—important when admissions counselors have thousands of essays to read!

guy-with-magnifying-glass

"See? It says 500 words right there in tiny font!"

The Final Word: How Long Should a College Essay Be?

The best college essay length is usually pretty straightforward: you want to be right under or at the provided word limit. If you go substantially past the word limit, you risk having your essay cut off by an online application form or having the admissions officer just not finish it. And if you're too far under the word limit, you may not be elaborating enough.

What if there is no word limit? Then how long should a college essay be? In general, around 500 words is a pretty safe approximate word amount for a college essay—it's one of the most common word limits, after all!

Here's guidance for special cases and hunting down word limits:

If it's a writing sample of your graded academic work, the length either doesn't matter or there should be some loose page guidelines.

There also may be implicit length guidelines. For example, if a prompt says to write three paragraphs, you'll know that writing six sentences is definitely too short, and two single-spaced pages is definitely too long.

You might not be able to find length guidelines in the prompt, but you could still hunt them up elsewhere on the website. Try checking FAQs or googling your chosen school name with "admissions essay word limit."

If there really is no word limit, you can call the school to try to get some guidance.

With this advice, you can be sure you've got the right college essay length on lockdown!

How Many Paragraphs Should an Essay Have?

How Many Paragraphs Should an Essay Have?

6-minute read

  • 19th May 2023

You have an essay to write. You’ve researched the topic and crafted a strong thesis statement . Now it’s time to open the laptop and start tapping away on the keyboard. You know the required word count, but you’re unsure of one thing: How many paragraphs should you have in the essay? Gee, it would’ve been nice if your professor had specified that, huh?

No worries, friend, because in this post, we’ll provide a guide to how many paragraphs an essay should have . Generally, the number of paragraphs will depend on how many words and how many supporting details you need (more on that later). We’ll also explore the concept of paragraphs if you’re wondering what they’re all about. And remember, paragraphs serve a purpose. You can’t submit an essay without using them!

What Is a Paragraph?

You likely know what a paragraph is, but can you define it properly in plain English? Don’t feel bad if that question made you shake your head. Off the top of our heads, many of us can’t explain what a paragraph is .

A paragraph comprises at least five sentences about a particular topic. A paragraph must begin with a well-crafted topic sentence , which is then followed by ideas that support that sentence. To move the essay forward, the paragraph should flow well, and the sentences should be relevant.

Why Are Paragraphs Important?

Paragraphs expand on points you make about a topic, painting a vivid picture for the reader. Paragraphs break down information into chunks, which are easier to read than one giant, uninterrupted body of text. If your essay doesn’t use paragraphs, it likely won’t earn a good grade!

How Many Paragraphs Are in an Essay?

As mentioned, the number of paragraphs will depend on the word count and the quantity of supporting ideas required. However, if you have to write at least 1,000 words, you should aim for at least five paragraphs. Every essay should have an introduction and a conclusion. The reader needs to get a basic introduction to the topic and understand your thesis statement. They must also see key takeaway points at the end of the essay.

As a rule, a five-paragraph essay would look like this:

  • Introduction (with thesis statement)
  • Main idea 1 (with supporting details)
  • Main idea 2 (with supporting details)
  • Main idea 3 (with supporting details)

Your supporting details should include material (such as quotations or facts) from credible sources when writing the main idea paragraphs.

If you think your essay could benefit from having more than five paragraphs, add them! Just make sure they’re relevant to the topic.

Professors don’t care so much about the number of paragraphs; they want you to satisfy the minimum word requirement. Assignment rubrics rarely state the number of required paragraphs. It will be up to you to decide how many to write, and we urge you to research the assigned topic before writing the essay. Your main ideas from the research will generate most of the paragraphs.

When Should I Start a New Paragraph?

Surprisingly, some students aren’t aware that they should break up some of the paragraphs in their essays . You need to start new paragraphs to keep your reader engaged.

As well as starting a new paragraph after the introduction and another for the conclusion, you should do so when you’re introducing a new idea or presenting contrasting information.

Starting a paragraph often involves using transitional words or phrases to signal to the reader that you’re presenting a new idea. Failing to use these cues may cause confusion for the reader and undermine your essay’s coherence.

Let’s consider examples of transitional words and phrases in action in a conclusion. Note that the essay is about too much mobile device screen time and that transitional words and phrases can occur later in a paragraph too:

Thanks to “In conclusion” and “Additionally,” the reader clearly knows that they are now in the conclusion stage. They can also follow the logic and development of the essay more easily.

How Do I Know Whether I Have Enough Paragraphs?

While no magic number exists for how many paragraphs you need, you should know when you have enough to satisfy the requirements of the assignment. It helps if you can answer yes to the following questions:

  • Does my essay have both an introduction and a conclusion?
  • Have I provided enough main ideas with supporting details, including quotes and cited information?
  • Does my essay develop the thesis statement?
  • Does my essay adequately inform the reader about the topic?
  • Have I provided at least one takeaway for the reader?

 Conclusion

Professors aren’t necessarily looking for a specific number of paragraphs in an essay; it’s the word count that matters. You should see the word count as a guide for a suitable number of paragraphs. As a rule, five paragraphs should suffice for a 1,000-word essay. As long as you have an introduction and a conclusion and provide enough supporting details for the main ideas in your body paragraphs, you should be good to go.

Remember to start a new paragraph when introducing new ideas or presenting contrasting information. Your reader needs to be able to follow the essay throughout, and a single, unbroken block of text would be difficult to read. Transitional words and phrases help start new paragraphs, so don’t forget to use them!

As with any writing, we always recommend proofreading your essay after you’ve finished it. This step will help to detect typos, extra spacing, and grammatical errors. A second pair of eyes is always useful, so we recommend asking our proofreading experts to review your essay . They’ll correct your grammar, ensure perfect spelling, and offer suggestions to improve your essay. You can even submit a 500-word document for free!

1. What is a paragraph and what is its purpose?

A paragraph is a group of sentences that expand on a single idea. The purpose of a paragraph is to introduce an idea and then develop it with supporting details.

2. What are the benefits of paragraphs?

Paragraphs make your essay easy to read by providing structure and flow. They let you transition from one idea to another. New paragraphs allow you to tell your reader that you’ve covered one point and are moving on to the next.

3. How many paragraphs does a typical essay have?

An essay of at least 1,000 words usually has five paragraphs. It’s best to use the required word count as a guide to the number of paragraphs you’ll need.

The main thing that confuses the majority of students is the length of the text, and thus, they face questions like “how many paragraphs in a 1500 word essay” or “how long should an introduction be for a 1500 word essay”.

The answers to these questions depend on many factors. As for the paragraphs, the majority of teachers would advise you to include about 8 paragraphs and divide them into three parts – one for intro, one for conclusion, and the rest 6 paragraphs should make the main body of your text. The intro and conclusion have to be concise.

The best if you can fit the opening clause in a few sentences because this way you will have enough space to disclose the topic fully and provide good and solid arguments.

The length of the text itself can also vary. For example, if you are handwriting the paper, it should take not more than 2 pages of text, which is not too much; but if you are typing your work, it can be longer depending on the spacing, font size, and other nuances.

1500 Word Essay Structure

Even though your content will differ, you should think about keeping your paragraphs clear. Avoid anything that is not necessary by editing and proofreading your paper. Check twice with your grading rubric and remember to follow every section that has been mentioned.

In most cases, your 1500 word essay structure will always remain the same:

  • Introduction. This is where you present your subject with the main objectives. The final part of the introduction must include a thesis statement. Do not forget to include a hook sentence to impress your audience. Your introduction must represent a certain problem or an argument, depending on what you are writing about.
  • Main Body. Writing your 1500 word essay structure remember the golden rule: one paragraph per idea! Still, it is not always possible when you must combine several ideas. This section is where you must provide evidence and data that supports your thesis statement. For example, statistical data, quotes, real-life examples, personal experience, or anything that would help support your thesis statement with empirical evidence. Since we are dealing with 1,500 words in total, consider making at least five paragraphs.
  • Conclusion. This section sums up your essay. Avoid introducing any new ideas and simply re-state your thesis statement by summarizing your arguments. Do not approach your final paragraph as something insignificant because college professors always read it with even more attention to learn about your writing outcomes. It is recommended to consider rhetorical questions if some additional research must be done.

Remember that your introduction should only provide background information with a thesis statement. Do not give any important information away yet! If there are any counter-arguments, they must be included in a paragraph preceding your conclusion.

How Many References For A 1500 Word Essay?

It will always depend on your subject and methodology. The number of references is usually determined by your teacher, but if it is not – you are free to use as many sources as you need to make your paper interesting!

But don’t forget about plagiarism! Only a unique work is worth scoring the highest grade, and thus, you should not add too many references. Keep the right balance between your ideas and information that supports your thesis. Moreover, cite each source of information properly to avoid issues with plagiarism.

How Long Should an Introduction for a 1500 Essay Be?

In most cases, the introduction should be approximately 10% of the total word count. Since we are writing a 1500 word essay, an introduction will be around 150 words unless specified otherwise.

How Long Does It Take To Write A 1500 Word Essay?

In most cases, students will cope with a 1500 word essay in 2-3 days if the topic is not too complex. Unfortunately, students always have little to no time because of their lack of skills in writing such works. However, writing 1500 words in a day is still possible for some students. It may take a few hours if some preliminary research has been done and if the topic makes you feel truly inspired.

How Long Should a Conclusion For a 1500 word Essay Be?

How Many Pages Are In 1500 Words?

If we are dealing with single-spaced paging, it results in 3 pages. If you are asked to implement double-spaced writing (like in MLA or APA style formats), you will end up with 6 pages.

How Many Paragraphs In a 1500 word Essay?

The 1500 word essay will range from 8 to 10 paragraphs, depending on your structure. If we take about 5-6 paragraphs for the body parts, adding first and final paragraphs, we end up with 8 paragraphs. Still, it is good to use as many paragraphs as you see necessary.

A Few Tips For A Great Paper!

  • Know the demands of your teacher. Different schools and teachers may have different requirements for such assignments – you should be aware of them and keep them in mind throughout the whole process of research and writing!
  • Start with a decent plan. Not everyone admits that creating an outline is important, but in fact, a good plan can not only save you lots of time but also simplify the process and help you create a better work!
  • Learn to manage your time – do not think that you have too much time to perform the work, better start in advance to have some extra time for proofreading!
  • Find a good template. Having a good example of work will assist you a lot, and thus, you should not hesitate to spend some time on searching for a good sample text, but remember not to copy someone else’s ideas!
  • Edit the work – don’t skip this step and re-read the text after some time to see what else can be improved and find some mistakes that you couldn’t see earlier.

The introduction should make up about 10% of the total word count in most cases. Because we’re writing a 1500-word essay, the introduction should be around 150 words long unless otherwise specified.

How Long Should A 1500-Word Essay’s Conclusion Be?

This section accounts for 10% of the overall essay, just like the Introduction. It should be between 150 and 200 words long, with a call to action in the final sentence. Your conclusion should not be overly broad and should be without any new ideas implemented.

How Many References Should You Include in a 1500-Word Essay?

Your subject and methodology will always be factors. Your teacher will usually specify the number of references, but if not, feel free to use as many as you need to make your paper interesting!

Do not, however, overlook the issue of plagiarism! Only one-of-a-kind work is worthy of receiving the highest grade, so don’t cram too many references into your paper. Maintain a healthy balance between your ideas and the evidence that backs up your claim. Additionally, to avoid plagiarism issues, properly cite each source of information.

How Long Does A 1500-Word Essay Take to Write?

If the topic is not too difficult, most students can complete a 1500-word essay in two to three days. Due to their lack of writing skills, students often have little to no time. Some students, however, are still capable of writing 1500 words in a day. If you’ve done some preliminary research and the topic truly inspires you, it might take a few hours. As a result, the answer will always be based on a person’s skills, abilities, grading rubric analysis, and the availability of relevant resources.

A 1500-Word Essay Sample Guide

An essay has three sections, as previously stated. The introduction comes first, followed by the essay’s body, and finally, the conclusion. So, let’s take a look at how to precisely write each part.

Structure of a 1500-Word Essay

Let’s take a closer look at the components of a 1500-word essay. You’ll also find 5 crucial essay structure tips further down on this page. The structure of a 1500-word essay is the same as any other. It has the following components:

• Introduction – this is where you introduce the topic you’re going to discuss. A thesis statement typically concludes an introduction. In the introduction of your 1500-word essay, include some eye-catching information to draw the reader in.

• Main Body – this is where you provide evidence and arguments to back up your thesis statement. To back up your thesis statement, use statistics, quotes, real-life examples, and rational explanations. The body of your paper can be broken down into multiple paragraphs. A 1500-word paper usually has 5–6 paragraphs in the main body.

• Concluding remarks – this is where you summarize your entire project. Your thesis statement should be re-stated, and the arguments should be summed up. The last paragraph must be equally impressive. For this purpose, we recommend using rhetorical questions or emotionally charged language. The conclusion is broken down into three sections:

  • Restatement of the thesis
  • A summary of the essay’s most important points
  • Looks back on the title and forward to the future

While these three sections are critical in conclusion, there are a few other things to think about when writing an essay.

  • There should never be any quotes or new information in your conclusion.
  • Make your conclusion the same way you did your introduction.
  • All of your points should be succinctly summarized in the conclusion.
  • Your essay should provide a sense of completion to the reader, as well as an opportunity for discussion.

Approach to Take While Writing A 1500-Word Essay

Students frequently believe that writing a 1500-word essay requires a different strategy, but this is not the case. The basic essay-writing procedure will not change. Begin with an intriguing introduction before moving on to the main body of the essay. Bring up your arguments with evidence to back them up in the middle section. Finally, write a conclusion for your essay. However, in order to achieve your goal, you must first follow certain rules.

Read Through the Essay Prompts Several Times to Ensure That You Understand Them Completely

This is usually skipped by students. They do not correctly read the essay prompt or question. How will you be able to write a perfect essay if you don’t understand what your professor expects from your essay? As a result, carefully read your essay prompt and seek clarification from your professor if you have any doubt.

Put A Timeline for Your Essay

Setting a deadline for your essay is the second most important thing you can do to keep it from lingering. Set a deadline if you want to finish your essay on time. You will be able to manage your work more efficiently if you create a timeline.

Keep in Mind to Be Knowledgeable About the Subject

You cannot begin an essay bluntly if you are serious about writing it. To begin, familiarize yourself with the subject. First, get some background information on the subject. You’ll need to do some research to accomplish this. Collect data from a variety of books or reputable websites. To gather good quality information for your essay, you can go to various informative websites such as Jstor, Springer, and so on.

Increase Your Typing Speed

You should also pay attention to how fast you type. Because they don’t have a good grip on the keyboard, the majority of students miss deadlines. To finish your essay on time, you must maintain a good typing speed. Within 3 to 4 hours, a 1500-word essay should be completed. You might suffer from your submission if you have more time than that. Slow typers should seek the assistance of online academic assignment writers in order to complete their essays in a timely manner.

Create an Outline

Make an outline of the essay before you begin writing the final draft. Making an outline first will help you structure your essay. Choose a hook statement or proverb for your essay and arrange your ideas chronologically. Make a plan for how you’ll present your arguments. There is a good chance that you will get good grades in the essay if you make an outline first.

Read, Re-read and Edit

Your essay is now complete. A final step ensures that the work is of high quality. Proofreading and editing are the next steps in the process. Consider your essay and read it several times to catch any mistakes. Keep the following in mind when proofreading your work:

  • Check to see if paragraphs are connected and in order.
  • Make sure your opening paragraph is correct. It should consist of the three parts listed above.
  • Examine your essay to see if it adheres to the university’s requirements.
  • Double-checking citations is a must.
  • Keep an eye out for spelling and grammar errors. Students from non-English speaking countries, in particular, should have their grammar checked by professionals.

Avoid Distractions

Last but not least, students should avoid all types of distractions when writing an essay. Only if you are willing to cancel a meeting with a friend or postpone a trip somewhere for a few days in order to focus on your studies will you produce a good essay. Distractions can steal your focus, leaving you pressed for time.

Your 1500-word essay is ready for submission if you followed all of the above-mentioned instructions carefully. Students who are still struggling can seek essay assistance.

How Long Does It Take to Write 1500 Words

How Long Does It Take to Write 1500 Words?

Writing speed depends on several key variables.

Everybody’s different. If you want to speed up your writing so you can produce more articles, blog posts, or even book chapters, you need to pay close attention to the following factors.

What Type of Content Are You Going to Write?

Different types of content have different structures, research requirements, and in many cases, writing style requirements. All of these can impact how fast you complete the piece.

Articles are pretty straightforward. You make a claim, and then you break it up into different parts that support the claim, and then each part will have its own supporting information.

A well-written article is very easy to read.

Each subheading encourages and motivates you to read the section below it. And then, the section beneath pushes you to read the section below, and so on and so forth. The article then ends with a conclusion that sums up the main points that were covered and usually calls the reader to action.

Blog posts tend to be more episodic than articles. Given the number of words that can go into an article and readers’ expectations, this type of content can cover a wider range of information than a typical blog post.

With that said, how fast you write a blog post depends on whether it’s a researched, niche, or personal post.

A researched blog post takes the most time because you’re going to have to back up every claim that you make using your research.

A niche blog post, on the other hand, can require less research because you’re just focusing on one sub-point or one subtopic. Everything else is really just an exploration or an expansion of that subtopic.

If you write enough niche blog posts, you probably would know enough about the topic that you don’t have to do fresh research. You just need to expand a little bit or explore a previously less-discussed point of some other topic you’ve written before.

A personal blog post is the easiest to write. It usually takes way less time than a researched or niche post. How come?

You’re talking about yourself, your feelings, and your hopes and dreams. Pretty straightforward! Because since it’s all coming from the heart, you don’t really have to do much research.

Creative Content

Creative content can be hot or cold when it comes to speed.

If you are writing a free-form novel with just like broad plot points—and everything else is up to your imagination—you can write that type of material fairly quickly. The big danger there is that you might contradict yourself, or you might leave a lot of plot holes or ask the reader to make lots of leaps of logic.

Other types of creative work, like haiku or certain types of poetry, will slow you down because half the time, you’re paying close attention to the rules. And the other half, you’re expressing yourself.

Interview-based or Curated Content

This type of content is fairly easy to write because you just send out a list of questions to a resource person, they send it back to you, and you just need to edit.

If you are directly interviewing somebody through Google Hangouts or Zoom, even better! You just need to get the footage transcribed and edit the transcript.

Curated content is very easy as long as you’re clear as to the central theme of the different pieces of content that you have copied and pasted from other sources. You just need to give proper credit to where you got the content and make sure that you follow the theme.

Academic Essay

Writing an academic essay can be very slow. It wouldn’t be a surprise if you took several hours to come up with 1,500 words.

Depending on the topic, academic essays require a lot of research, and you have to piece together the different bits of information that you’ve gathered into something that the professor or teaching assistant would engage with.

Opinion Essay

A lot of people are under the impression that if you’re writing about your opinion that writing 1,500 words or 2,000 words will be very easy. No, it isn’t!

While it’s true that most people have an opinion, not everybody expresses them the right way. If you want your opinion to be taken seriously, you have to back up or provide evidence for every claim you make.

Not only that, the information that you present must logically flow.

There shouldn’t be any contradictions. You shouldn’t be pulling any tricks to manipulate people’s opinions. Instead, they would just have to look at the information that you laid out based on the truth and come up with a logical conclusion that lines up with your opinion.

This is why a well-crafted opinion essay can take a long time to write. It may be 1,500 words, but depending on how much research you have to do, it can take forever to put together.

How Long Does It Take to Research the Type of Content You Will Be Writing?

A key variable for determining writing speed depends on how much research is involved. As I’ve mentioned in the different descriptions of content types above, each of these types requires different levels and, oftentimes, different kinds of research.

This might seem pretty straightforward, but once you start doing the research, your speed and getting everything together is affected by your reading speed.

On top of that, your research speed would be sped up or slowed down by how you comprehend or understand the information that you’ve found through your research.

How Well Did You Plan Your Content?

If you’re the type of person who just jumps into a writing assignment with no advanced planning, expect the process to take a little bit longer than it needed to.

A little bit of planning can go a long way. If you have a preset process that you follow based on previous experience when creating a writing plan , things will go much faster for you. The quality of your output will also probably be higher.

If, on the other hand, you prefer to wing it or just improvise and do what comes naturally, expect to go in circles and repeat steps as things become clear during the research and writing process.

How Are You Writing?

As important as the factors above are in determining your writing speed, a key chunk of your production speed is affected by how you choose to write.

The three most common ways to write are by hand, through typing, or with your voice via dictation.

Writing By Hand

When you write by hand, you hold a pen on your left or right hand and apply pen to paper.

There are several things going on. You’re thinking about what you’re going to say, and then you’re moving your hand to write.

If the thoughts come to you much faster than your hand, then there may be some ideas that you can’t quite capture, and this can be very frustrating.

In some cases, you stop to get your train of thought, and you might have to double back to where you started and restate or say again the point that you thought you missed.

This can be very frustrating because when you’re writing physically on a piece of paper, there are just so many different distractions. Writing’s not that easy when you are getting your stuff down by hand.

You have your inner voice that can be susceptible to perfectionism . You also have your hand, which might be shaking or sweaty—so that can throw you off as well. Plus, the paper that you are working with might have tactile distractions that might weaken your focus.

Writing By Typing

This is the most common way writers produce work; they get a keyboard and type away. This can apply to a desktop or a laptop computer.

When you’re typing, there is less distraction than writing by pen. But it’s very tempting to just delete the paragraph or couple of paragraphs you just finished because, in the back of your mind, you think that there’s a better way to say what you just typed out.

If you don’t get a handle on this common temptation , you can spend hours plotting along at a snail’s pace because for every two paragraphs you finish, you end up deleting and typing over one.

This is the reason why a lot of writers, no matter how experienced, can barely produce 3,000 words a day.

Writing Content With Your Voice

This is my personal favorite. This is the reason why I put up this blog!

When you write with your voice, once you cover an outline point, you can safely move on to the next point. And once you have said your piece, you move on to the next point after that.

Before you know it, you’re done! There are no second takes.

Unlike writing with a pen or typing on a keyboard, you have less temptation to go back to what you produced earlier and delete that to try to come up with some better version.

When you’re dictating, you probably forgot what you said two minutes ago. All you have is the present outline item and a faint memory of the words that came out of your mouth half a minute ago at best.

This way of writing pushes you to focus on the present moment and come up with a big-picture view of where you want the dictation to go. It gives you the emotional structure you need to keep moving forward until you’re done .

The downside is if you are a hesitant or fuzzy dictablogger , you’re going to have to spend more time editing the transcript to whip it into decent shape.

The good news is the more dictation writing practice you get, the less work the transcript will need.

1500 word essay reddit

How Fast Do You Type?

When you’re typing out your content, please understand that there’s a big difference between typing speed and writing speed.

A lot of people confuse the two. They believe that if somebody’s typing at the rate of 35 words per minute, that that is their writing speed. Absolutely wrong!

When you write your materials by typing them out, you are mentally editing what you are about to type and, in many cases, the words that already appear on the screen.

This slows you down quite a bit, especially if you give in to the temptation of deleting the previous few sentences because you think that there’s a better way to say them.

Also, when you are seeing the words on your screen as you type them out, you get distracted by the sound of the keys, the movement of your fingers—and if you’re not careful, you might end up writing in circles because it seems that the sentences are never good enough.

There’s always a better way to express an idea, so you end up writing in circles.

Reviewing Your Work Also Affects Writing Speed

Don’t forget what happens after you finish typing, hand-writing, or dictating: you have to look at your output. In the case of dictaphone writing , you have to inspect the transcript.

The time you take for quality control purposes must be factored into your writing speed as well.

While it’s true that dictation blogging or voice writing can speed up your production—because most people speak at a rate of 150-250 words per minute—when you factor in the transcription editing and other steps, your actual production time is actually much longer than you originally assumed.

It doesn’t matter what method you use to write; I don’t mean to discourage you.

You might be thinking that you’re just hitting your head against the wall, and there’s really nothing you can do to boost your writing speed. If it takes you several hours to produce 1,500 words, it might seem like this pace is set in stone.

Well, there are six steps you could take to speed up your writing .

You shouldn’t zip through all these six steps. Instead, master one step and then move on to the next, so you can increase your writing speed on a long-term basis.

1500 word essay reddit

Step # 1: Assessment

Can you write 500 words in an hour? Set a timer, lay down the instructions, and start with the research step. Move on to outlining, and then write out your piece.

Depending on the type, you may or may not be able to knock out 500 words within an hour.

Can You Write 1,000 Words in an Hour?

If you have a decent typing speed—and we’re talking about anywhere from 40 words per minute and up—you may have a shot at this.

Again, it depends on how quickly you research and how familiar you are with the topic that you’re going to be writing on.

Can You Write 2,000 Words in 3 Hours?

Longer pieces have more moving parts. They also require a higher level of internal consistency and logic.

A lot of newbie writers think that 2,000 words are easier to write if you have three hours to do it. Not necessarily.

Because if you just blast stuff out onto a page, or you just dictate like a drunk person, you’re just spouting out words. Your output might not make much sense.

It actually takes a lot more work to produce a longer piece (even though you have more time to work with) because of internal consistency and logic issues. You can’t just keep repeating the same stuff over and over again.

1500 word essay reddit

Step # 2: How Well Do You Know the Topic?

Level up your expertise through practice. Here’s a little secret from a veteran writer.

When you write online content, it seems that you have to become some sort of walking and talking encyclopedia.

I understand why a lot of writers are frustrated with this aspect of freelance writing—because one day, you might be talking about bitcoin and cryptocurrency. The next day, you may be talking about certain weight loss supplements. And the day after that, you may be assigned a travelogue to Florence, Italy.

While variety is the spice of life, a little bit of topic consistency can go a long way in leveling up your expertise. Of course, the most obvious way to do this is to just stop taking assignments on topics that you’re not all that familiar or comfortable with.

The more you specialize, the faster you will write because—let’s face it—how many different subtopics are there in cryptocurrency or blockchain? You know the trends. You already know how the technology works and the many different implementations out there.

You do reach a point where basically you’re just tapping into your memory banks and coming up with a different or creative way to express information that you’ve already written about several dozen times before!

That is mastery —because, by the time you reach that point, you already nailed the research. There’s really no need for a deep-level search for new information. You probably would still need to search for some of the latest developments. But when it comes to familiarity and comfort with the subject, you’re done!

So with less fear and a good understanding of the broad layout of the information involved, you can knock out the research part, which translates to more confident writing.

Let me put it this way: the more you think you know what you’re talking about, the less you research, and the faster you write.

It’s as if you’re able to string the different points of your article or blog post together because you already know what’s going to come next. You already understand the different ways of presenting this information.

Here’s another piece of good news: when you specialize, you never stop learning because you still have to pay close attention to stuff that changes or recent trends.

This is called incremental research . You’re basically just adding on to the mountain of information you already have.

And when you do this, you deepen your knowledge. And eventually, you get the opportunity to slowly move on to a related topic. You master that, and then you move on to another topic.

After all is said and done, if you have a good memory, you will be able to cover many different topics because you’ve written on them before, and you will be able to whip out content on those subjects in no time.

1500 word essay reddit

Step # 3: How Well Did You Organize the Content?

Everybody’s got to start somewhere. Writers begin with confusing or unclear outlines.

The good news is with practice, you will start figuring out how to lay down an outline that works best with your thinking process. This can take some time, but it’s definitely worth looking forward to. Why?

When you reach that point, you will be able to fill out your outline or dictate it at a high rate of speed, but the quality doesn’t decrease. You get this happy marriage of short production time, high volume, and high quality.

Step # 4: Be Intentional

When you’re researching and writing, don’t just do things in a free-form or open-ended way. Set some limits on yourself. Tell yourself, “I’m going to write this many blocks in an hour.”

The moment you do that, you impose a certain measure of discipline on yourself.

Now, you know, in the back of your head, that you’re not going to write so many words in one hour. But that’s okay! What’s important is you set a limit.

And the more you repeat that limit, and the more you sincerely work to meet that deadline, the better you will get and the closer you will be able to stick to the deadline.

Turn Off All Distractions

By “all,” I mean all. No social media. No emails. No notifications of any kind.

You’ve already set up a block of time; completely own that time by turning off all distractions.

Allow Yourself to Get Excited By Your Research

When you’re writing intentionally, you are allowing your writing topic to be present in the center of your mind. For that block of time that you’ve devoted to that writing project, nothing else exists.

This enables you to get a big-picture view of your writing project as you research an outline.

Research an Outline During Your Most Productive Hours

No other person on this planet knows you better than yourself.

You know the block of time in any given 24-hour period where you are most productive. This is the time where you can think clearly and piece ideas together with very little effort. This is also the time when you can look at an outline and instantly get how you’re going to write those different blocks.

Research an outline during those productive hours. Milk them for as much output as you can.

Follow and Stick to a Clear Production Flow

Some writers would skip different parts of the writing process. Most would research first, then read the materials in context. Once that’s done, they move on to the outlining and then the writing.

Other writers start with the writing. Then, they do research and then the outline.

I’m not saying that there is an ironclad one-size-fits-all sequence, but do yourself a big favor: if you notice that you’re more productive when you follow a certain sequence, stick to that. Improve on it.

Be as efficient as you can.

The more you get away from the processes that work for you, the more time you waste. Writing starts feeling like pulling teeth.

1500 word essay reddit

Step # 5: Discover and Stick to Your Ideal Writing Process

As I’ve mentioned above, everybody has different production flows and sequences. Understand what makes sense for you. Don’t try to copy other people.

How would you know you are using the right sequence?

You may be thinking that you’re writing quickly, but that’s not good enough. You have to pay attention to the depth of your research.

Sure, you may be able to blast out 1,500 words in ten minutes, but if your produce garbage, then you just wasted your time. The same goes with very shallow content.

You have to pay attention to the depth of your research as well as how you process different sources together. That’s how you can get a feel for the right production sequence.

Maybe you should do certain research parts first, and then read them a certain way―then outline, then go back to some research? It all depends on the depth of the research and how well you piece different materials that come from different sources.

Step # 6: Always Write Under Pressure

I didn’t say ‘write under pressure from time to time.’ I didn’t say ‘you should have a sense of urgency every once in a while.’ No.

I said: always write under pressure.

That’s right. Put yourself under some sort of forcing mechanism like a deadline or a series of events.

This way, you are forced to set a timer for each part of the writing process. You’re not just thinking this; you are actually writing it down on a document on your screen.

One part says, “Research: 10 minutes.” And then, the other part, “Reading and context: 15 minutes,” “Outlining: 20 minutes,” so on and so forth.

Now, does this mean you will be able to hit those timelines like clockwork? Of course not!

But the more pressure you put on yourself, the more you get used to it.

And eventually, things will start to fall into place, and you develop habits that will enable you to just hit those timelines consistently. That’s how you build discipline.

And then, from that point, you can reduce the amount of time you give yourself for each part until you’re able to write a lot in a very short period of time.

Skills-Building Tips So You Can Write or Dictate 1,500-10,000 Words Per Hour

You need to ask yourself these three questions repeatedly. And the more you ask these questions, the more you push yourself—and, eventually, you will do whatever it takes to go from 1,500 words per hour to much, much more.

How Good Are Your Reading Comprehension Skills?

There are all sorts of online diagnostic tools that you can use to gauge your ability to understand information. Go ahead and look for and use them.

As you go through these different diagnostics, you would notice that there are certain patterns of information that you just have a tough time working with. Look for improvement techniques or drills that you can do to help you untangle and make quick work of those types of materials.

This is all well and good, but you can’t approach this from an emotional level. You can’t just say, “Well, I’m taking all these drills, and it feels okay. I think I’m making an improvement!” No.

You have to test yourself. So you have to have a counter, and you have to read the materials and use a pre-prepared test to see if you actually understood what you read.

Reading quickly is one thing . Retaining and understanding a huge chunk of that material is another thing entirely and is much more important.

Do You Have a Reading Plan or Strategy?

If you want to be a faster writer, you need to be a faster reader. It’s important to have a reading plan or some sort of strategy so you can get through and make sense of a lot of material in a very small period of time.

Test and optimize your plan. Maybe there are rough spots? Maybe you made some sort of assumption that is very unrealistic? Whatever the case may be, test your reading plan or strategy.

Always make sure to include your review time.

So it’s one thing to take in information, but you can’t just rush to the outlining stage. You also have to review what you read and take a look at your notes.

Does it make sense? Does everything fit? Do you have some sort of big-picture view of what you just took in?

Do You Have a Daily Plan for Improving Your Writing Skills?

Every day, you should go through some sort of ritual or some drill that would touch on the following skills: reading, comprehension, outlining, note-taking, and typing or dictation speed.

It doesn’t have to be much, but they have to be well-defined and intentional.

You can’t be fuzzy about any of this. You have to know exactly what skill set your improving on and devote enough time on a day-to-day basis for it.

1500 word essay reddit

The Final Word on Writing 1,500 Words

1,500 words might seem like a lot if you are the average writer, but by using the skills-building steps above, you can speed up your writing speed.

The key is to decide to start and measure your progress.

Also, always keep your mind open to lessons that you may discover along the way. These are what will truly scale up your skill base that will, later on, lead to dramatic improvements in your writing speed.

Essay Writing Hacks for the Social Sciences

The Critical Turkey

How many sources should I use in my essay?

Possibly the most frequently asked question when it comes to social science essay writing (certainly in first and second year courses) is how many sources should be used in an essay. This is a very legitimate question, especially if you don’t have much essay writing experience to start with. But the answer is not very straightforward. It depends. Rather than providing a fixed number, this blog post lays out what it depends on, and what kinds of parameters play a role in determining the number of readings.

The purpose of referencing

First, however, a short reflection on why you need to use references in the first place. Anchoring this discussion to its purpose will help you gain a deeper understanding of the issue, and the rest will make more sense. It is tempting to see this as a tick-box exercise of a specific number of readings you need to cover. But providing references goes deeper than that.

What distinguishes academic writing from other forms of writing is that indeed, it builds on what others have written before, and makes explicit reference to it. This is because social science is ever-evolving. When we write about social class today, we stand on the shoulders of giants , scholars like Marx, Weber, or more recently, Pierre Bourdieu. And those are only the big names. Hundreds of other authors have dedicated their scholarly lives to academic research, and added bits and pieces to an ever-evolving body of knowledge, be it on social class or any other topic we write about.

Providing references to their work pays tribute to this. It is a sign of respect for the work of others. But it also a way of showing your own awareness of the different debates and different perspectives in the field. And it is a way of showing where your position is. For example, if your analysis of class follows a Marxist tradition, this will show in the readings you use, as you will be drawing primarily on authors that have also followed this tradition (and probably some original Marx as well).

Rather than this being a tick-box exercise, then, referring to the work of others has a deeper meaning. It is about who you are, and where you see yourself, as a budding scholar. And you might not think of yourself as a budding scholar (yet?), but hey, we all have to start somewhere.

Parameter 1: Your ambition

And this brings us to the first parameter, your ambition. If all you want is write a reasonably well-informed essay that achieves a solid pass and a not unreasonable grade (a perfectly legitimate ambition. In our school this corresponds to a grade in the 50s range), fewer sources will do. You still need to demonstrate you have read, and are building on the literature, but there is less emphasis on integrating, for example, different perspectives. If, however, you want to demonstrate that you really know some stuff, and are aware of at least some of the different perspectives (in our school, a 60s essay), you will typically use a few more sources, integrate a few more perspectives, and a little more data and evidence. If you are aiming for those really high grade ranges (in our school, 70 and above), you want to show more of an ‘overview of the topic’, an awareness of a slightly bigger part of the body of knowledge that exists, which will result the use of additional sources, and an extended bibliography.

Okay, I know you want numbers. Here we go then. Let’s say this is a typical 1,500 to 2,000-word essay, first or second year, Social and Political Science at Edinburgh University (if you’re at another school or university this might be different. Even some individual courses might be different. Always check for local conditions): a typical 50s essay here will probably use four or five sources; in the 60s, it tends to be around five to ten, and typical 70s or above essays use probably somewhere between eight and 15 substantive sources. These are rough estimates, though. And importantly, these numbers are not deterministic. You could write a brilliant essay based on just five or six sources and still get that first. Or you could use 15 sources in your essay, but if your argument is off, or your writing is incomprehensible, or the sources aren’t very good, you might still only get a 50s grade.

Parameter 2: The kind of question

The second parameter to consider is the kind of question you are addressing. There are two main distinctions to make here: first, whether the question is mostly on a specific theory or on a topic. More theoretical questions tend to need fewer readings. For example, it could ask about a specific concept by a specific author, say Foucault’s concept of power/knowledge, or Mead’s idea of the Self. Rather than looking at several different viewpoints, this kind of essay question is asking you to engage in detail with only one author’s perspective. This means there is less importance on breadth of reading (expressed in a higher number of readings). However, this does not necessarily make things easier, as there is instead more emphasis on depth of reading. You need to engage thoroughly with that one text, more that you would otherwise. And even though the emphasis is on one author’s theory, depending on your ambition, you still want to consult additional literature, and see how other authors have interpreted and contextualised this particular theory.

If the essay question is on a specific topic, on the other hand, say globalisation, gender inequalities or social class, there is usually more of an emphasis on the breadth of reading, and of you demonstrating awareness of different perspectives and interpretations. This tends to result in a higher number of bibliography entries.

The second aspect of the ‘kind of question’ parameter you need to consider is how many dimensions the question has. In the above example, if the question is about one theorist, you will typically need fewer readings than if the question is asking you to compare theories, for example, compare Foucault’s notion of how power and knowledge are connected to what Marx and Engels wrote about the issue. Both might be 2,000 word essays, but the number of readings is likely to be twice as many if you add this comparison.

The same goes for topic questions. These, too, can involve several dimensions. A question that asks about the impact of globalisation on cultural practices in Japan is more likely to be focused on a selected number of core readings. If a similar question asks about the impact of globalisation on culture, the economy and politics in Japan, this multitude of dimensions will require additional readings for the additional dimensions.

Parameter 3: Quality of sources

Another parameter that determines the number of sources you need to use is the quality of your sources, and the kinds of sources you use. Once again, two distinctions are important here. First, there is a difference between core readings, and ones that are more peripheral. The core readings should indeed provide the core of your argument, and the basis for the essay to build on. They are usually provided in the course material, either as essay readings, or for the respective lectures or course units the essay builds on. The decisive point, however, and what defines these as core readings for the purpose of your essay, is that they touch on the core of what the essay is about. Peripheral readings are ones that provide examples, additional material, data and illustration. They help your essay branch out, and cover just that little bit more ground. The point, however, is that they are additional, and if push comes to shove, you could probably do without them. The core readings, in contrast, are indispensable.

This distinction is important for how you count your number of readings. Core readings count fully; peripheral readings, not quite so much. This can become a problem if your bibliography is overly weighted towards peripheral readings. If you have, say, ten readings in your bibliography, but only one or two are on the core of the topic, this will be insufficient, despite the relatively high number of readings. If we take the above example of the effects of globalisation on Japanese culture, if only one or two readings are on globalisation, and ten others on examples, this might leave the core a little hollow, and the discussion of globalisation in a more general sense might just not have sufficient substance. I have used the word ‘might’ here, because this does depend on the kinds of readings, and there is a chance that this bibliography actually does work. The important point is that this is something you need to pay attention to, and ultimately it is your judgment call.

The second distinction of the kinds of sources is between academic and non-academic sources. As a rule of thumb, you should be very careful about using non-academic sources in the first place. All of the above is written on the assumption that we are talking about academic (i.e. peer-reviewed) journal articles and books. Under certain circumstances, however, it is possible to use non-academic sources, such as news articles or blogposts, mostly to provide current examples and illustration of whatever you are writing about. If you do use such sources, however, they should never be seen as a replacement for academic sources. And when you count how many sources you have used, you should simply take these out of the equation. If you have used, say three academic sources and 15 non-academic sources, in the eyes of your marker (at least if I am that marker) you have only used three sources, plus some additional, peripheral, illustrative material. This is not to say that this additional material cannot also be very useful. But as discussed above, academic essay writing starts with an acknowledgment of what is already out there in terms of academic literature and research, and is based on the body of knowledge that has evolved over time on a specific topic, not on yesterday’s news.

Parameter 4: specific instructions

The last parameter to consider can throw the entire calculation over board. It is whether the essay question comes with specific instructions. Such instructions could be, for example, that an essay in social theory really only needs to engage with this one theory. This gives you permission to limit the number of readings. However, be careful here, as this can be a false friend. Reading additional secondary literature on the theory might actually help you understand it better.

Or you might be encouraged to use news articles to provide examples for your discussion. This can potentially lead to a much higher number of bibliography entries. But as discussed above, this should not replace academic literature, and the latter should always form the basis and core of your discussion.

These four parameters are what I think are the most relevant determinants for the number of readings you need to use in your essay. But maybe I missed something? What other considerations do you think are important? Or maybe you disagree with some claim made in this article? Do let me know in the comments below.

How Long Does It Take to Write a 1000 Word Essay?

How long does it take to write an essay?

How long does it take to research an essay?

If you’re writing an opinion piece on something you already have some knowledge about, you may not have to do any research at all. It may just be a matter of organizing your existing thoughts into a coherent essay. If you need to find out about a topic before you begin to write, you can easily get information on certain topics, whilst others will be more obscure and therefore more difficult to research. Clearly, the easier it is to find information, the faster you can write.

How good are your reading comprehension skills?

Some of us can just skim a piece and pick up all the salient points. Others will have to read with more attention, and even re-read a piece several times to extract the information we need. Having good reading and comprehension skills makes writing much faster since you’re able to “get” the facts faster and organize them better. Now you know why you had to do so many reading comprehension tests at school.

How well did you plan?

Throwing yourself headlong at a 1,000-word essay and writing till you reach the word count may seem like the easy option, but it isn’t. Planning your essay so that it begins with an introduction, highlights the most important points you want to make and then wraps everything up into a conclusion actually saves you time. Sometimes, essay instructions will tell you how to structure the piece, so read them carefully and extract any information you can use to guide your essay’s structure.

How fast do you type?

Have you ever gotten lost halfway through a sentence? You know what you wanted to say, but halfway through, the thought slips away from you. The faster you can type , the more easily you can capture thoughts before your mind moves onto the next thing and you forget what you were trying to say. Typing skills are essential in the modern world. Consider using typing games to improve your speed.

How long does it take me to write a 1,000-word essay?

Faster isn’t always better. The more in-depth your report is meant to be, the longer you should spend on it. I can usually research and write a fairly technical magazine article of 1,000 words in three hours, but do remember that I’m a professional writer. I’m fast because I write all day, every day.

The longest I’ve ever spent on a 1,000-word article was 12 hours. It was absolutely brutal! The information I needed to gather was very technical, hard to find, and even more difficult to understand, and you can’t write something until you really understand the subject matter. I also had to contact experts for their opinions, but I couldn’t even ask about their opinions until I could target them with the right questions. As a result, I actually had to write most of the article before slotting in the expert comment.

The quickest I’ve ever written a 1,000-word article is one hour. In this case, I already knew the subject matter well and didn’t have to back up every fact in the essay with references.

Reviewing your work also matters

If you’re writing for grades and want a good one, you need a really good essay. Don’t start writing it the day before you have to hand it in. Try and get your first draft down at least a day or two before you have to submit your work. Then return to it and do your editing. Read your essay aloud to yourself, since this will help you pick up any careless errors you wouldn’t otherwise spot. Check to see if your information flows logically from one point to the next and make sure that you’ve presented your information clearly.

Remember, teachers get tired. They have to read the same kind of essay over and over again when they grade. If they struggle to understand what you’re saying, you might not get as good a grade as you would if you stuck to using short sentences and relatively simple language.

Your reviewing process shouldn’t take all that long. If you don’t have to make a lot of changes, you should be able to do your final edit in under half an hour.

Take your time. Whatever you do, don’t rush. You might want your essay to be written quickly, but if it’s an important essay, taking your time will give you a better finished product. Budget your time conservatively. It’s better to find that you’ve still got time left over than to run out of time and end up dashing things off with a looming deadline.

This isn’t accurate. I wrote my 1000 word essay in an hour, not three hours. You should change the times you have listed to reflect how long it actually takes to write. Obviously you don’t know since the mes you listed are not the same as what I can do!

Did you even read the article? The writer says that it’s based on what she writes and is just a general approximation. How long it takes you or anybody else to write an essay will obviously be different because you’re not the same as everybody else. Nobody writes at the same speed so how long it takes you to write an essay will be different for every person.

Someone doesn’t understand the meaning of “rough estimate”

Well then you must be superhuman or some shit I don’t care, I came here for a question not your butthurt comments. Also, if your so good at writing I wouldn’t have found 2 typos in 2 sentences 🙂

*you’re

If you already have all the research done and know what you want to say, then a 1000 word essay shouldn’t take more than an hour to write. In fact, it probably can be done in 30 minutes or less. The time-consuming part of an essay is the research and how long that takes depends on how much you have to do. But the actual writing of the essay shouldn’t take too long at all.

But research is part of the writing process. If a person writes a book, they don’t only count the time it took them at the typewriter writing. They count all the time it took to research the book as well. Trying to separate the two doesn’t make sense.

I think an important thing to point out here is that there’s a huge difference between writing a 1000 word essay and writing a good 1000 word essay. You can write an essay in hardly any time at all if you don’t do the proper research and don’t spend time editing what you wrote. If you’re going to write a good essay, it’s going to take more time. You should always give yourself more time than you think you’re going to need to get it done.

This applies to all writing. Writing and writing something something well will have a huge time discrepancy even if both writings are the same length. Just because you are able to finish something quickly doesn’t mean that’s the best way to do it.

Exactly! Actually, it can take hours or days to come up with the right line – or it can come in seconds. There’s no real counting in terms of the creative process.

Days to come up with the right line? 😀

It does. Sometimes, no matter how hard you look at something, you won’t be satisfied with it. It may take you days to figure it out. And then, one fine day, you suddenly stand up right in the middle of breakfast and then run upstairs and then type out the right line. Source: personal experience

I just spent 8 hours on a 500-word monologue… This comment made me feel better.

Wow, your advice is excellent it motivated me to do a lot better in my essay.

In my opinion, hours that are presented here a partially true. It may take about an hor to write 300 word essay but editing also takes some time. So on averege, I count the time to write the piece itself + time edit everything.

Research, first draft writing, editing, and rewriting are all part of the writing process. I think the time it takes to do all of them should be counted in the time it takes.

It takes way too long! Teachers should not be allowed to assign essays more than 250 words. They always complain they don’t have enough time and work too hard. It’s only because they make their students do too much work!!

This comment just makes you look lazy. 250 words is nothing. Any topic that needs to be explored will take many more words than this. If you don’t want to write, just admit it and don’t try to project that on others.

If you do your research, use annotations for resources and understand to whom and what you have to transfer than the fewer words the better. Remember that you are demonstrating deep knowledge of the topic by making it accessible to the audience without them doing the research. Simplify, simplify, simplify.

Contrary to what academia self-righteously preach, its imperative for any writing and explanation of thought to be simplified. If you cant explain it in short time/short essay you don’t understand it enough.

I disagree, I feel 250 words is way too less to explain any topic. In my opinion, the maximum word count for an essay should be 1500.

It should take long enough that you get all the points you want across in the writing, but not too long as to bore the reader. Writing should be engaging, not boring.

Nice philosophy, but completely unhelpful if you have a paper due tomorrow and limited amount of time to write. The real world doesn’t work that way.

If someone has an essay due tomorrow and they waste time reading this, then they are a bit of an idiot for giving themselves even less time to work with. If they’re leaving work to the last minute like that, then the only thing they should be doing is jumping right in and writing (or planning the essay, but that should be done much sooner).

This is so arbitrary and will depend on the individual. It’s like asking the question, “how long does it take to write a book?” For some, it will only take a couple of months while for others it will take a lifetime. it also depends on the type of writing you’re doing. Some writing is easy and quick and other writing is difficult and requires huge amounts of research.

The uphill task of writing an essay is doing thorough research. Once you have completed the research, you can deliver a 1000 word paper per hour

I completely agree with you on that one. I recently worked on a 4000 word essay, and while the research did take me three hours to conduct, I completed the essay itself in a bit less than four hours and scored a total of 32/34 points.

So happy to read that! That’s because I just realised, that that is what I needed to read. I’ve got two months to write six 2500 word essays. I’ve been procrastinating because I’m simply in fear of doing a bad job. I’ve done lots of research; made lots of notes; collected citations and written nothing. It’s time. I can do this!

I’m writing a 1600 word essay right now as I type this lol

Then show me after you have finished.

Im writing a 2500 word essay, almost done, I can’t even imagine writing a 10000 word essay in university, that sounds EXTREMELY painful 🙁

I found these estimations quite accurate, thank you.

I’m writing a narrative for my English class right this moment and the word requirements are 800-1000. I’ve only been working for two hours and I’m at 1,157. I’m nowhere near done…

your word requirements are 800-1000 and u have 1157? You’ve been done for a while I would say

Wow i have to write a 1 500 word essay in 4 days and I have about 1050 words left Dono how long thats gonna take me 😂😭😭😭

I am writing a dissertation and those estimations made me positive because just 41 hour to write 12,000 essay seems nothing. But at the moment I just finished literature review(though the hardest part yet) without editing I am already at over 35 hours of work. And that’s not even a half! But I am aiming for a good grade though…

I’ve found these estimates incredibly accurate in my years in college. I’m about to graduate next week and have one more 3500 word paper to write. We’ll see if the estimates hold true. However, the estimates (for me at least) don’t include the time it takes to edit so I usually add a little time depending on how long the essay/paper has to be.

Wow, these tips are helpful, Thank You to the creator of this website. These tips helped me a lot in my essay for school.

Application Instructions: Writing a Strong Personal Statement

——— this content was revised june, 2024 ———————————.

As part of your admissions application to a Penn Engineering Online degree program, you’ll need to write a personal statement—an essay designed to help us get to know the real person behind your grades and test scores. A strong personal statement can tip the scales in your favor, so we encourage you to give it your best effort.

What is the personal statement?

The personal statement is a 1,000-1,500 word essay that answers the following questions for your selected program. We encourage you to include detailed, specific examples from your academic, research or industry work if possible.

  • What makes you interested in this degree program?
  • How will you benefit from the program?
  • Why will you succeed in the program?
  • How will you contribute to the community?
  • How do you plan to incorporate an average of 15 hours per week per course of studies into your lifestyle?
  • Please describe your career goals and how the curriculum will help to achieve them.
  • For MCIT Online applicants only : Given that the program is designed for people without a CS background, if you feel that your resume could be perceived as overqualified, please explain why MCIT Online is right for you.

Reapplicants:

If you have already applied to a Penn Engineering Online degree program in the past, please address this additional required question in your personal statement essay (250 words):

  • Please discuss any updates to your candidacy since you last applied (e.g., changes in your professional life, additional coursework, extracurricular/volunteer engagements). If after reading our online materials you think your application may have been perceived as overqualified, please explain why this program is right for you.

How can I make my personal statement stand out?

Write authentically, from the heart. Express your passion for computer science and explain why you are a good fit for the program. We won’t have the opportunity to interview you, so the personal statement is your chance to showcase your strengths and explain discrepancies.

  • Address potential weaknesses in your application. Are there gaps or inconsistent grades in your academic history, particularly in quantitative ability ? Use the personal statement to provide context—and to give examples of how you will do better. It’s also an opportunity to explain why you’re a good fit for the program even if you appear to be overqualified.
  • Read the questions carefully. A personal statement that doesn’t fully address the questions could hurt your chances of admittance.
  • Explain how you will manage your time during the program. Each course requires a commitment of about 15-18 hours a week . How will you juggle that with your other commitments, especially if you are currently enrolled in another degree program?
  • Share your accomplishments. Have you done any online learning or taken additional coursework to prepare for the program?  The personal statement is an opportunity to highlight those achievements.
  • Get a second opinion. Once you’ve written a draft, ask someone who knows you well to read it. An extra set of eyes is essential to help you avoid typos and make a clear and compelling case for your candidacy.

If your word limit is 1500 words, ought you discuss reasoning behind essay prompt? Or ought you just proceed to criticize the essay prompt?

Let's presume that

You must NOT overstep essay's limit of 1500 words . You lose marks if you do.

Your essay prompt is

‘The penalty doctrine is ‘a blatant interference with freedom of contract’ yet its basis is controversial and elusive (Jonathan Morgan, Great Debates in Contract Law (2015), p 234). Discuss with reference to decided cases.

Obviously you can't afford to waste too many words on what Morgan wrote. But how many words ought you spend?

Isn't it smartest to straightaway criticize Morgan's reasoning? Your professor obviously knows this book and its reasoning better than students, and doesn't need you regurgitating or paraphrasing Morgan.

I straightaway proceed to criticize Morgan's standpoints, and evaluate whether they comport with case law and other jurisprudents' standpoints.

Or ought you at least summarize Morgan's reasoning, if you don't have enough words to discuss them? But this feels stupid because you're wasting your word limit on reasoning your professor already knows.

Morgan proffers five reasons for this topic sentence. First ... Second ... Fifth ...
Now I criticize Morgan's standpoints, and explore whether they comport with case law and other jurisprudents' standpoints.
