A still from ‘#Home’

Changing with the times is not something which comes naturally to everyone. Oliver Twist (Indrans), the protagonist of #Home , is someone who has gone through that struggle more than once in his life. In a short flashback, the script tells us how he once used to run one of the most sought-after video cassette lending libraries in town. The era of video cassettes passed, and he was left behind, longingly looking at the old cassettes stacked up in his attic.

In the present day, Oliver finds an almost unbridgeable gap between him and his sons, who are lost in their smartphones and drowned in social media, a world which is alien to him, as it is for many of his generation. Yet, the gap is more than one of technology. He yearns especially for the approval and care of his elder son Antony (Sreenath Bhasi), a writer-director caught in a rut after his successful debut film. Oliver’s wife Kuttiyamma (Manju Pillai) seems to understand the inner workings of his mind, but there is only so much she can do, while getting caught in her own daily struggles in the household.

  • Director: Rojin Thomas
  • Cast: Indrans, Sreenath Bhasi, Naslan.K.Gafoor, Manju Pillai
  • Storyline: A humble but technologically-challenged old man tries constantly to keep up the closeness with his two sons, who are hooked to social media like other millennials

Rojin Thomas, who had a promising directorial debut with Philips and the Monkey Pen , and had a forgettable second film, seems to have recaptured some of the magic of his debut in #Home . More than a part of that magic is owing to the presence of Indrans, who has delivered a nuanced, heartfelt performance. From the scenes depicting his struggles with the smartphone — portraying effectively an entire generation’s struggles with technology which came late into their lives — to the ones of him hiding his feelings from the eyes of his family, Indrans makes Oliver relatable and endearing. Even without the ‘extraordinary’ back story. Oliver is made extraordinary by Indrans’ portrayal of the ordinary man.

The mood is kept light all through, with even the emotional scenes getting that treatment, with Oliver’s friend Suryan (Johny Antony) and younger son Charles (Naslan.K.Gafoor) injecting some dose of humour. Where the film falters a little is in trying to say too many things, from mental health to smartphone addiction, which contributes to the runtime of 160 minutes. Some more work at the editing table would have made it a much better film than it is currently.

Not to forget the fact that the script says the same things about the nature of Oliver and his son’s relationship in different ways, though it works at times in capturing the ever-changing shades of that relationship. The script also treats the relationship between Antony and his girlfriend Priya, which is toxic both ways, as somewhat normal.

Despite the avoidable flab, #Home is a relatable, light-hearted tale that stands on the strength of its performances.

#Home is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video

Home movie review: Indrans' Malayalam film is a charming relationship drama

Home movie review: sometimes too sweets but most times heartwarming, rojin thomas brings to life a lovely family drama that is driven by indrans' effortless performance..

Malayalam cinema is quietly making an impact with its simple stories. At a time when filmmakers are running behind stars to make pan-Indian cinema; Malayalam industry is betting its money on close-to-heart stories.

Home movie review: Indrans plays a man hassled by his phone and his family.

Rojin Thomas’s Home, which joins the list of recent feel-good Malayalam movies like Vikruthi and Android Kunjappan, works its magic with a simple story of a technology-challenged father, desperately trying to bond with his sons in the digital age. Home is a charming relationship drama but is too sweet at times making it slightly unbearable. However, it does leave you with a smile on your face with some lovely moments.

Watch Home trailer:

Home follows the relationship between Oliver Twist (Indrans) and his elder son Anthony Oliver Twist (Sreenath Bhasi) over a period of a few weeks. Anthony, a filmmaker basking in the success of his debut film, is struggling to write his second movie. With an ultimatum from his producer, he comes home, a place where he wrote his first script, to find some spark. Anthony’s father is over the moon to see his son back home, and his excitement knows no bounds as he goes around telling his friends about Anthony’s next project with a superstar. With constant pressure from the producer to complete the project, Anthony’s relationship with his family falls apart while his father tries his best to keep everything afloat.

What really works in the favour of Home is its simplistic storytelling. It doesn’t boast of a great storyline, but it manages to tug at heartstrings with a plot that’s peppered with some lovely moments and a heartwarming twist. The film does get needlessly long but it makes up for the length with some great performances from the lead cast. Veteran actor Indrans breathes life into the character of the father, who’s stuck between pleasing his sons and getting more comfortable with social media. Indrans makes this a great family drama with his effortless performance and the scenes between the members of the family are highly relatable. Sreenath Bhasi is equally good as the wayward filmmaker-son.

The film does touch upon sensitive themes like discussing meeting a psychologist, and how it’s not something to be ashamed about. There’s also a sub-plot about social media being both a boon and a bane. It’s a film you won’t mind recommending and it makes for a lovely watch with your family.

Director: Rojin Thomas

Cast: Indrans, Sreenath Bhasi and Vijay Babu

#Home Movie Review: An eminently comforting film with relatable characters

Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).

There is a scene in #Home where Indrans is sitting inside a restaurant separated from the relatively younger and 'cooler' members of his family. I once happened to see the exact real-life version of this scene when I went to a restaurant alone. This father was seated in front of me -- because my table had only one person -- while his son, wife, and kids occupied a different table. Indrans' character, Oliver Twist, reminded me of him. They couldn't have picked a better actor to play him.

Director: Rojin Thomas Cast: Indrans, Sreenath Bhasi, Naslen, Manju Pillai, Kainakary Thankaraj Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video

Like the father in the above anecdote, the actor can convey volumes without saying anything. You can tell what he is thinking by simply looking at his face. Each member of the film's central family -- Kainakary Thankaraj as the grandfather; Indrans, the father; Manju Pillai, the mother; and Sreenath Basi and Naslen as their sons Anthony and Charles, respectively -- seems to experience this alienation to a certain degree. They seem to exist in separate compartments while living under the same roof.

When we meet Anthony, he is a filmmaker with a single film to his name, leading a disorderly existence. He has been struggling to complete the climax of his second film. The producer (Maniyanpilla Raju) is growing impatient by the day. The latter suggests that he write the last act in the same place where he wrote his successful debut. It's a nice segue to the film's title. Is a chaotic, messy lifestyle with your loved ones better than the same with yourself? #Home seeks to answer this question while addressing a lot of other things.

#Home is not so much an English Vinglish -style story of a person trying to learn about something as a document of a fictitious family, told like an epic (duration: 160 mins). I loved how the film gives equal space to every character and takes its time to bring out their peculiar characteristics. It packs so many relatable Indian moments: the mother trying to wake her son up by increasing the fan's speed; the same lazy son not bothering to put back all the teacups; and the two sons occasionally peeping inside the refrigerator because, as one of them says, "It's a habit, just like checking the phone all the time." Before I sat down to write this review, I came across at least four people who told me they saw themselves or their parents in these characters. For instance, Oliver notes down everything he learns about social media apps in a diary. My mother does that. If she saw this film, I'm sure she would be pointing to this scene like Leonardo DiCaprio in that meme. And Sreenath Bhasi's Anthony represents a multitude of young Indian men forced to detach themselves for the sake of work. Anthony is not the 'bad guy' here; his plight is perfectly understandable if you have experienced/are experiencing the same.

Yes, on the surface, #Home appears to be a story of a man trying to fill the emotional void caused by the technological divide and generational gap. But it's also, primarily, an emotionally overpowering story of self-acceptance. You could call it the 'coming-of-age' of a man in his 60s, triggered by a particular incident that becomes a major cause of embarrassment for Anthony, the filmmaker, and guilt for Oliver. It's a relief to see Indrans not play him too seriously. Oliver is, after all, someone who doesn't make a huge deal about all the conflicts he encounters. He has a sense of humour, and in some cases, he is not even trying to invoke laughter. It just happens organically, and who better than an actor blessed with an incredible flair for comedy. One of my favourite moments in the film has Anthony approaching a superstar named Vishal (Anoop Menon) to pitch his script, and he sees that the former has taken a liking to Oliver instead of him. Another wonderfully comical moment has Oliver accompanying his best friend Suryan (Johnny Antony in another hilarious performance) to a psychologist (Vijay Babu, vibrant as usual).

I must give #Home props for using this last stretch to address India's mental health stigma. Though initially apprehensive about the thought of anyone seeking expert help, Oliver doesn't take too long to warm up to the idea and eliminate whatever misconceptions he may have - learning the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist, for instance - even when his friend remains severely sceptical. The film makes some pertinent points even when the delivery seems straight out of an awareness video at times.

However, one thing that puzzled me is the choice of music in several places. I wonder why the makers chose to overstuff the film with generic, unmemorable tunes to inform us of the emotion of each scene? Since most actors here possess the gift of subtle expression, it's awkward when each performance gets constantly underscored by a corresponding piece of music to tell us what we are supposed to feel at a given point. Isn't everything evident without the inclusion of music? Not that there is anything wrong with using it -- it's cinema, after all -- but it would've worked better in moderation for a 160-min duration film. The familiarity of some musical choices begins to wear one down after a point. Sometimes the music is as intrusive as Charles' noisy demands.

Fortunately, the film's heavily poignant ending redeems its minor shortcomings. It got me teary-eyed in a way that no other recent Malayalam film managed to do. I must thank the makers for doing a film that helps reverse, to a certain extent, the after-effects of some of the dark Malayalam thrillers released recently.

home movie review in malayalam

home movie review in malayalam

home movie review in malayalam

Home Movie Review:

Home review:

publive-image

#Home, On Amazon Prime Video, Is A Long But Relatable Celebration Of Family

#Home, On Amazon Prime Video, Is A Long But Relatable Celebration Of Family

Directed by : Rojin Thomas

Writer : Rojin Thomas

Cast : Sreenath Bhasi, Johny Antony, Nalsen, Indrans, Manju Pillai

Cinematography : Neil D'Cunha

Edited by : Prejish Prakash

Streaming on : Amazon Prime Video

The beauty of #Home is that everyone, irrespective of age, gender, geography, will see a bit of themselves in it. Rojin Thomas' film about one family in Kerala contains universal truths about families everywhere – the fraught relationship between fathers and sons as children become adults and find their own voice; the acts of casual callousness that children, even loving ones, inflict without thinking on their parents; the distance that smartphones, social media and technology have created even in the most tight-knit families; the alienation that parents feel; the way in which mothers are taken for granted and critically, the importance of goodness and decency, which ultimately trump fame and success.

Three generations of the Oliver Twist family live under one roof. The name comes from the grandfather's fondness for English novels. He also named Oliver's brother Peter Pan and his sister, Mary Poppins. #Home is filled with lovely little details like this – in one scene, Oliver is washing his older son Antony's car.  The younger son, Charles, notices this but instead of helping, he requests his father to also wash his scooter. Antony and Charles aren't awful, neglectful kids. They are just too busy with their own lives and too sure that they are smarter than the folks who raised them. Oliver used to run a video cassette library which was shut down when the technology became obsolete. He now spends much of his time tending to his terrace garden. The boys might have affection for him but he is definitely not their role model. He seems much too ordinary for that.

Charles, played with a nicely comical slacker vibe by Nalsen, is a YouTuber, hooked to social media. The older Antony, played by a solid Sreenath Bhasi, is a film director who made a hit first film. But two years later, he's still trying to put together his next project. Sitting in a messy apartment – even his bean bag has holes in it – he is struggling with writer's block. Antony has the dates of a big star but he can't come up with a climax for his script. His producer suggests that to find inspiration, he should return to where he wrote his first film. So Antony moves back home.

Much of #Home is set in a multi-level house where the family lives. In recent Malayalam films, homes have been the site for deep dysfunction and death – think Joji , Kala ,  Kuruthi  – but this film's default mode is a lingering sweetness, much of which comes from Indrans who plays Oliver Twist. His diminutive frame and unassuming manner speak volumes. Oliver isn't an imposing patriarch. He's a timid man with modest dreams who only wants to have a deeper communication with his sons. Indrans plays him with a touch of bumbling affection and charm. Oliver buys a smartphone but can't even figure out how to take a photo. The device only further undermines his authority. In Oliver, Indrans somehow combines bruised dignity with good cheer.

The film goes overboard in making a case for limiting phone usage. At one point, Oliver starts to see a counsellor who gives an extended lecture on how phone addiction creates anxiety and disconnection, almost as though the film is a public service announcement. The film also makes a case for seeking help for mental health – we are told that it's like cleaning the rooms of your mind. The intention is laudable but the screenplay, also written by Rojin, inevitably becomes flabby.  At two hours and forty-one minutes, #Home is much too long.

But these characters and situations are so relatable that you stay with the story – in one scene, Charles is trying to explain how apps work to his father, who is taking notes. The exasperation on Charles' face is something all parents have seen. Or take the mother, Kuttiyamma played by a terrific Manju Pillai. She keeps this family together. At one point, she loses her temper and lashes out at the entitled behaviour of her sons, asking – who are you two kings come down from heaven? As a mother of grown-up kids, I can tell you, all parents have, at some point, felt this.

Rojin cranks up the emotions, taking the narrative to a climax which will leave you teary-eyed. It's unabashedly manipulative, underlined by soaring music by Rahul Subrahmanian but it works. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that everyone lives happily ever after – this isn't a movie that could end any other way. But through it, Rojin also gives us the definition of home.

#Home is simplistic, both in narrative and craft, and overwrought. But it's also a heart-warming celebration of family and the ties that bind us.

You can watch the film on Amazon Prime Video.

Movie Review | Home, where emotions have no bridles

Padmakumar K

As a tale packed with loads of warmth, Home sails smoothly leaving enough room to feel, think, fret and rejoice. Written and directed by Rojin Thomas, Home depicts the tight and loose chords of family ties.

The title suggests the milieu where the drama has been pitched in. A father, mother, their grown-up sons and an ailing grandpa make the home. The father, Oliver Twist -- a Dickensian inspiration -- is a grounded and timid human soul overwhelmed by the technological advances around him.

home movie review in malayalam

Meanwhile, the elder son Antony Oliver Twist, a film director who has delivered a hit in his debut movie, is a victim of his own image trap. He has to deal with a spasmodic love relation, a nagging but good at heart film producer and a looming threat of financial liabilities.

The younger son, a happy-go-lucky social media geek, is loud in expressing his feelings and maintains the 'cheer' factor in the family. Kuttiyamma, the mother, represents the anxious guardian in any household busy juggling with the chores and charting her plans for the future of her children.

The drama dwells on this filial fabric for most of the time until it veers into a different premise. The dialogues go overboard at times, but find the grip soon and chugs ahead engagingly. There are several comic gags mostly ingrained right inside the storyline, making timely flourishes.

home movie review in malayalam

There are some adjunct tales, latched to main plot, which remain untold, but can be surmised from gestures, adding to the beauty of the narrative. Here, Indrans excels as a man of stories who subtly carries his past without a fuss.

In essence, Home narrates the tale of human emotions pegged at different levels of age, situation, perspective and approach and the longing to breach the mind's borders to find some space. Indrans, Sreenath Bhasi, Manju Pillai and Nalsen K Gafoor excel in their roles.

In addition, noteworthy performance of an array of actors including Johny Antony, Vijay Babu, Srikant Murali, Shaju K S, Maniyan Pilla Raju, Anoop Menon, Kainakary Thankaraj, Deepa Thomas, Priyanka Nair, Asha Arvind, Minon, Ashlin Joseph, KPSC Lalitha lent an arresting momentum to the narrative.

home movie review in malayalam

The beautiful songs by Rahul Subrahmanian and brilliant visuals captured by Neil D' Cuncha blend with the emotions to form a mesmerising treat. The movie also deals with various aspects of communication gadgets and the disastrous outcomes of using them without proper knowledge. The scenes pitting the loser in the race against the winner at times make the contrast far too obvious, but the narrative blisters vanish as the bigger saga unfolds.

home movie review in malayalam

The story drags on occasionally, leaves gaps and gets predictable, but it has enough stunners as well to get you to the zenith of the drama. Released on Amazon Prime, Home makes for a delightful watch for a thorough entertainment for movie lovers of all groups

‘Home’ review: A heart-warming experience that lingers on – and on

Rojin Thomas’s Home promises a heart-warming experience and achieves both a heart-warming and seat-warming experience. The Malayalam drama on Amazon Prime Video comes in at an extended two hours and 41 minutes, delivering feel-good vibes, observational comedy and homilies about life and family.

The storytelling is as unhurried and old-fashioned as the hero, a techno-illiterate man who has fallen behind in the age of the smartphone and social media. Oliver (Indrans) lives with his father (Kainakary Thankaraj), wife Kuttiyamma (Manju Pillai) and son Charles (Naslen) in Thiruvanthapuram. Oliver’s older son Anthony (Sreenath Bhasi) is a filmmaker struggling to complete his second movie.

Suffering from writer’s block, easily distracted by the pings and beeps emanating ever so often from his phone, and anxious about his impending marriage to girlfriend Priya (Deepa Thomas), Anthony fails to notice his father’s fumbling attempts to reach out to him. Anthony’s dismissive attitude towards the nondescript and frequently tongue-tied Oliver is in stark contrast with his admiration for Priya’s high-achieving father Joseph (Sreekanth Murali).

Wounded by his son’s open contempt and Charles’s occasional sneering, Oliver pours out his woes to his hypochondriac childhood friend Suryan (Johny Antony). Oliver’s attempts to master the mysteries of the smartphone lead to a series of misadventures that are embarrassing for Anthony but revelatory for Oliver.

home movie review in malayalam

Thomas’s screenplay plays out like a limited-episode series crunched into a movie. Home attempts to reach a meeting point between rootedness and individualism, personal contact and the new-fangled but distancing seductions of the smartphone.

Gentle comedy about human foibles is balanced with folksy wisdom about the importance of family ties. Oliver Twist’s journey of self-discovery and his own back story (including the one about his unusual name) prove that he is more hip than square, despite what his son thinks.

Thomas treats deep wounds with a bandage that has a smiley stuck on it. A less cheerful movie might have been more harsh on Anthony, who often comes off as being obnoxious to Oliver. Even Anthony’s girlfriend suffers the blast of his disdain – a situation that resolves itself without any damage to Anthony.

With compromise rather than confrontation in mind, Home focuses on creating relatable situations and amplifying the excellent chemistry between the ensemble set of actors. The movie’s hero is unmistakably Indrans, one of cinema’s finest chameleons.

Indrans’s superlative performance is both understated and attention-grabbing, minimalist in gesture and expression and maximalist in impact. The rest of the cast is on a roll too, helping Home reach its destination despite its numerous detours.

Home is where the heart is. A warm family drama with sweet melting emotions. It’s a simple story revolving around the chaos and conflicts surrounding an innocent affable 60 year old man, who tries to catch up and win over his new gen tech savvy sons, addicted to the social media lifestyle. Indrans, is the real show stealer. 20 minutes into the movie, you connect with him emotionally and start to root for him. The movie has its flaws, becomes a bit redundant during the later hour with a flimsy finish, but nevertheless, the writing and characterizations are solid, beautifully capturing the different shades of relationship within the family members in a humorous and lighthearted manner. The background score high on strings, creates a perfect soothing vibe. A refreshing, relatable and a satisfying movie, which must be watched with the whole family.

The best thing about #Home is that it gives a veteran performer like Indrans an opportunity (in 2021) to act his heart out. #Home is everything you can expect given its title. Thematically, it heavily borrows from Sreenivasan's Kadha Parayumbol in its climactic moments but writer-director Rojin Thomas successfully infuses a huge dose of relatability to the proceedings before we get there. The (slightly excessive) melodrama in the end makes me reduce half a star in a film that gets its humor going pretty early on. Everyone on the film's poster (or otherwise) does well - conveying the right emotions with ease.

Although the same saviour storyline was fed to us in different coatings over time, this was too relatable and emotional to be just dismiss it like other knock offs. Some of the dialogues really hit hard.

The director jumped the line quite a few times hoping the audience will follow through, the film had enough soul in it for us follow through the road the director was taking us.

The meta approach in this film is something i enjoyed , it was just the right amount to get the jokes and references while not bothering us too much.

It also shines light on the daily life of a master procastinator like me who just watches movies and writes reviews other than doing something productive.

Malayalam Cinema is something else. For one of my final films for the Malayalam March challenge, I chose #Home, and I'm so glad of this decision of mine. First of all, a special thank you note to my friend Kibriya for suggesting me to watch this film. Thanks man ❤️.

Home is a beautiful film showcasing the dynamics of a family and it's all done so meticulously well. I love films which tackle the problems or bonding between members of a family. There's so much in these films that just hit your heart and make you feel the characters and their emotions and that's exactly what Home did to me. I was emotionally invested in these characters and their journey…

This is absolutely one of those good manipulative films that function to make you feel certain things at certain points. Home is also an important narrative that needed to be told because the advent of technology has definitely aggravated the generation gap, thwarting an unfair burden on the last generation to adjust to the contemporary expectations of the technology. Indrans stunning performance is so nuanced and well intentioned that he made me feel home. But on another hand, Home plays with a bias, in favour of the last generation and much against the new generation. That being said, there's no vilification and almost everything is actually true when you try to recall your own attitude and experience.

The biggest flaw…

This was as thoughtful as any other Malayalam movie, but I was just surprised by how well the story was crafted till the last second of it.

#Home is more like a reflection of a household, of a life that is just looked upon daily but never appreciated. At one point, the story felt like it was about the Father's Character or Anthony's but in reality, the movie deeply dived into the account of how ignorant and not so accepting lives we all are living. The movie mocks the daily inexperience of lives but also does not mock at the same time by clearing out the questions it asks. I have seen a lot of movies that play along with…

Home is flawed. Home is preachy. It’s what you can call a could’ve been jis joy padam. It does remind you of Kadha Parayambol and Big Fish. Having said all, it has somehow managed to get all its heart at the right places.

P.S : Charles Oliver Twist is a rockstar!!!

BANKING PARTNER

Real estate partner, #home movie review: a crowded canvas that dilutes the story of a technologically challenged man.

Curated By : Gautaman Bhaskaran

Last Updated: August 19, 2021, 11:32 IST

Poster of the Malayalam movie #Home.

Poster of the Malayalam movie #Home.

#Home has little to offer, except Indrans' fine piece of acting. It is really disappointing when compared with director Rojin Thomas' 2015 film Joe and the Boy.

Director: Rojin Thomas

Cast: Indrans, Manju Pillai, Sreenath Bhasi, Naslen K. Gafoor, Kainakari Thankaraj

There is a bit of novelty in Rojin Thomas’ Malayalam work, #Home, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. People are named after English literary characters, like Oliver Twist, while his brother is Peter Pan and sister, Mary Poppins! We do not see the last two; we merely hear about them from Mr Twist, a man in his sixties, played by the exceptionally remarkable Indrans (Remember him in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Pinneyum? Of course, he has acted in innumerable movies since then).

In #Home, he just cannot handle technology, not even a smartphone, and while enumerating the advantages of being tech-savvy, the film also underscores how mobile phones, for instance, have taken away the spirit and soul of social interaction. But Twist evolves to master a smartphone — to the amusement at first, and amazement later, of his two sons, Antony (Sreenath Bhasi) and Charles (Naslen K Gafoor).

While Twist’s story is garnished with a lovely twist and a bit of humour, the sub-plots about Antony and others are just about passe. He is a film director, who after a blazing debut comes to his parents’ home hoping that he will be able to get over his writer’s block. However, his constant arguments with his fiancee, Priya, create obstacles, and he keeps missing one deadline after another to submit his story and script. Added to this is his problem with his bank over EMI payments. Snippets about his younger brother, Charles, seem at best silly.

Also, Twist’s visit for psychiatric evaluation and his continuing disappointment with Antony laced with his own failure in cassette business add further to an already crowded canvas. The narrative gets stretched to 160 minutes, and appears all diluted. In fact, midway through the movie, the core plot of Twist’s technological challenges is all but forgotten!

#Home has little to offer, except Indrans’ fine piece of acting. Really disappointing when compared with Thomas’ 2015 Manju Warrier-starrer, Joe and the Boy, which won two Kerala State awards.

ARM Movie Review

Cast - Tovino Thomas, Krithi Shetty, Aishwarya Rajesh, Rohini, Surabhi Lakshmi, Basil Joseph, Harish Uthaman

Director - Jithin Lal

Producer - Listin Stephen, Zachariah Thomas

Banner - Magic Frames, UGM Entertainments

Music - Dhibu Ninan Thomas

A.R.M., short from Ajayante Randam Moshanam, has hit theatres on September 12. What makes this release special is the fact that it is an Onam release. The film stars Tovino Thomas in the lead role. He plays three characters in the film. Krithi Shetty, Aishwarya Lakshmi and Surabhi are the film’s female leads. Krithi will be making her Malayalam debut with this film. ARM, directed by Jithin Lal, is available to watch in all South Indian and Hindi languages. The film is also released in the 3D format.

What is it about?

Set in the fictional town of Chiyothikavu in Northern Kerala, ARM spans the three periods of 1900s, 1950s and 1990s. The film is an adventure revolving around a sacred idol and three different men. While Tovino from the 1900s is a brave warrior, the other Tovinos are thieves. The film is narrated with a touch of wonder and magical realism, and it feels like a Chandamama katha coming alive on screen.

Performances :

Tovino Thomas gives a strong-yet-assured performance in ARM. He holds the film and its multiple narratives together with the combined screen presence of his three distinct roles. His character Maniyan, a brutish thief in the 1950s, gives him the most scope to perform. Maniyan is the film’s most massy character. His warrior role is heroic but there isn’t much scope there. We mostly root for the third generation Tovino Ajayan, whose redemption arc and journey of self discovery forms the crux of the film.

Krithi Shetty plays a rich man’s daughter and she does not have much to do except look pretty. She looks really beautiful. The scenes between Krithi and Tovino have a bit of lag, but they are thankfully not cringe. Rohini also gets a decent role in the film, and she rises to the occasion. Basil Joseph, who plays the role of Tovino’s friend, gives an unfussy, assured performance. Harish Uthaman, who plays a villain is one of the film’s weakest links. He does not get much to do and his role is almost a bait to the audience.

Technicalities :

The film looks decent. The makers of the film prioritized authenticity over grandeur, so it looks more like a Kantara or a Dasara than a RRR or a Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy. There are no unnecessary frills and massive sets, but the film doesn’t look cheap or low-effort either. The production design and lighting, especially in a few action and drama portions, is really good.

Dhibu Ninan Thomas has composed music for this film and he has done a fine job here. Chilaka, picturized on Tovino and Krithi Shetty, is a memorable and beautiful composition. There is also a really melodious lullaby in the film that stands out.

Writing Acting Production Values Music

Thumbs-down

Lag in some places The lack of a formidable antagonist

There are many aspects of the film which make this a rather interesting watch but ARM is not without its share of drawbacks. One of the biggest shortcomings of the film is the lack of a strong villain. There are villains in the film (Harish Uthaman’s character, Krithi Shetty’s father) but they fail to raise the stakes of the film effectively.

In addition to all the action, magical realism, romance and historical drama, there is also an element of social commentary. Kunji Kelu, Maniyan and Ajayan belong to an oppressed caste, and throughout the film there is an undercurrent of casteism. The caste angle adds both stakes and realism to the entire narrative.

The film has 4 to 5 solid action sequences in the second half that make it worth watching. But the drama between these sequences creates a bit of lag, though it helps us understand and contextualize the entire film.

The film has a massive scale and scope and the fact that a newcomer executed all of this is very impressive. There are a few loose ends in the film, but nevertheless, it is a very engaging watch.

Bottomline- An Ambitious Wonder

Nunakkuzhi Movie Review In Telugu:

  10. #Home, On Amazon Prime Video, Is A Long But Relatable Celebration Of Family

Much of #Home is set in a multi-level house where the family lives. In recent Malayalam films, homes have been the site for deep dysfunction and death - think Joji, Kala, Kuruthi - but this film's default mode is a lingering sweetness, much of which comes from Indrans who plays Oliver Twist. His diminutive frame and unassuming manner speak volumes.

Review by Arun George ★★★½ 3. The best thing about #Home is that it gives a veteran performer like Indrans an opportunity (in 2021) to act his heart out. #Home is everything you can expect given its title. Thematically, it heavily borrows from Sreenivasan's Kadha Parayumbol in its climactic moments but writer-director Rojin Thomas ...

  18. #Home (2021)

Rojin Thomas's #Home is a straightforward drama about the emotional distance between a father and his son. For the most part, #Home seems all too familiar, and it sometimes feels contrived. Nevertheless, the performances and the seldom-boring nature of the film make it a passable watch. Read Full Review. USER REVIEWS.
