- Introduction
Northern Europe is renowned for its style, high living standards and world-class higher education. So, it’s little wonder that the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) are prime destinations for study abroad students.
While higher education in most Nordic countries was free for all up until a few years ago, tuition fees are being gradually introduced. As it stands, only Norway and Iceland remain tuition-fee free to all. As a result, there’s growing demand for international scholarships for this part of the world, and even those looking to study in Iceland or Norway may be able to gain funding to cover living costs and other fees.
Keen to attract talented students from around the world, each of the five Nordic countries offers various scholarship opportunities for international students. Read on for a summary of international scholarships available for study in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
Universities in Denmark offer free tuition for Danish students, EU/EEA citizens and exchange students. International students from outside of the EU/EEA are subject to tuition fees and are required to show proof of funding before receiving a residence permit or a place on a Danish university program. Some popular scholarship opportunities for study in Denmark are listed below.
Government scholarships
- Danish Government Scholarships for Foreign Nationals – These scholarships are available to international exchange students interested in studying Danish language and culture. For current students on exchange programs from institutions in Brazil, China, Egypt, Japan, South Korea and Russia.
- Denmark Government Scholarships for non-EU Students – Offering exceptional non-EU international students the chance to study in Denmark backed by government funding.
- Fulbright Commission Scholarships to Study in Denmark – Scholarships to study abroad in Denmark for US citizens wishing to undertake study in Denmark for a year.
University-specific scholarships
- Roskilde University Tuition Fee Waivers and Scholarships – Various scholarships for graduate students from outside the EU/EEA to study in Denmark at Roskilde University .
- University of Copenhagen – There are a variety of scholarships for graduate students outside the EU/EEA to study at the University of Copenhagen – see this page for more details.
Tuition fees in Iceland vary depending on whether the university you wish to study at is state or privately owned. While state universities charge just a nominal registration fee for all students, private institutions charge tuition fees, which will be higher for non-EU students. As an example, graduate tuition fees for EU students at Reykjavik University start at €2,800 (approx. US$3,066) per term, while non-EU fees start at €5,500 (approx. US$6,023) per term.
Government scholarships
Icelandic Government Scholarships – International scholarships for students pursuing studies in the Icelandic language at the University of Iceland .
- Reykjavik University Scholarships – Merit-based scholarships awarded to full time students at the university, with options to study at graduate level in the Iceland School of Energy.
- University of Iceland Scholarships for Existing Students – Various scholarships and research grants for existing students who work, research or study in Iceland at the University of Iceland.
Previously free for all students regardless of nationality, Finland has now introduced tuition fees for non-EU/EEA students studying English-taught courses of at least €1,500 per year (approx. US$1,642). However, most students will pay between €4,000 and €20,000 (approx. US$4,380 – 21,905) depending on their course.
Non-EU/EEA students can still study for free if they’re a PhD student or their course is in Finnish or Swedish, and more scholarships are becoming available to help them fund their studies.
- Finnish Government Scholarship Pool – Government-funded scholarships for graduate students pursuing doctoral level study in Finland. Open to international students and researchers from selected countries.
- University of Helsinki – The University of Helsinki offers scholarships for non-EU/EEA students studying master’s degrees at the university.

International applicants with citizenship from outside the EU/EEA must not have a break in studies between the completion of their bachelor’s degree and the commencement of their master’s degree.
- Candidates admitted to a Master of Science degree programme at campus Oslo or campus Bergen, with the exception of the BI-Luiss Joint Masters in Marketing.
Note: International applicants with citizenship from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland who are not residents of Norway are not eligible for this scholarship.
How to Apply
- Applications for scholarship are not accepted by email, with the exception of 3rd year Sivøk applicants (see below).
- Always apply for a scholarship at the same time as you apply for admission on the online application portal.
- Write a scholarship application letter, maximum one-page, outlining why you should be considered for this scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit, not on financial need.
- Upload it to the section marked ‘Scholarship’ in your online application for admission.
- Include all the required documentation to be evaluated for admission to a Master of Science programme. The scholarship application will only be considered if a complete application for admission has been submitted and the offer of admission is accepted.
- BI students currently in their 3rd year of the Siviløkonom programme, can apply the spring of their 3rd year by sending a scholarship application letter to [email protected] with the subject line: BI Presidential Scholarship Application
- International applicants who apply for the BI Presidential Scholarship will also be considered for the MSc International Scholarship. A separate scholarship application letter is not required.
Application Deadline
Application deadline is March 1.
International and domestic applicants: A complete application for admission, including your scholarship application, must be uploaded to the online application portal. Applications for scholarship are not accepted by email.
Siviløkonom 3rd year students: Scholarship application letters must be emailed to [email protected] .
Late applications will not be considered.
Selection of Recipients
BI has a generous scholarship programme for master’s studies. However, the competition for scholarships is great. Each year, the number of scholarship applications received from master’s applicants is far greater than the number of scholarships available.
- BI Norwegian Business School aims to build a diverse and international student body.
- Only applicants who have been admitted to a Master of Science programme and have applied as instructed will be considered.
- Scholarship applications will be considered only if the offer of admission has been accepted.
- BI ensures distribution of scholarships across MSc programmes.
- BI reserves the right to award scholarships according to institutional priorities which many include prioritizing specific master’s programmes, diversity and gender distribution, or selected partner schools of BI.
- All candidates will be assessed according to the ECTS scale. Applicants with international bachelor's degrees will have their grades converted to the ECTS scale.
- Other factors that may influence awarding could be other academic achievements, GMAT/GRE/CAT scores, extracurricular achievements, and special personal achievements.
- International applicants who apply for the BI Presidential Scholarship will also be considered for the MSc International Scholarship.
Notification of Scholarship Awards
- Scholarship offers are not sent with offers of admission. You will receive the offer of admission first.
- Applicants must accept the offer of admission while awaiting scholarship decisions.
- Scholarship offers will be sent to selected candidates throughout the admission cycle.
- Scholarship offers must be accepted by the date indicated on the offer. Scholarships not accepted by the deadline will be withdrawn/cancelled and awarded to another candidate.
- All scholarships will be awarded by the end of April with the exception of the A. Wilhelmsen Foundation Scholarship and the BI-Luiss Joint Master in Marketing Scholarship which are awarded later in the spring.
- All scholarship applicants, including those not selected, will be informed of the scholarship application decision by the end of April.
Scholarship decisions cannot be appealed.
Academic Progression Requirements
All candidates must meet academic progression requirements to maintain their scholarship. Detailed requirements are included in the Scholarship Agreement.
- Full study progression (30 ECTS) in each semester.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of a "B" on the BI ECTS scale after completion of each academic semester.
- Candidates who are awarded the BI Presidential Scholarship must be prepared to be "BI Ambassadors", acting as spokespeople, assisting in recruitment efforts, and promoting a good study environment. Scholarship recipients will be informed about responsibilities during the academic year.
Please note:
- You may apply for more than one scholarship; however, BI Norwegian Business School will award only one scholarship per applicant.
- Awarded scholarships are tied to a specific academic programme at a designated campus and cannot be transferred.
- International candidates who are eligible for a student loan in Norway from Lånekassen (eg. 180 ECTS bachelor’s degree from a Norwegian educational institution) will be considered as domestic applicants for scholarship purposes and therefore do not qualify for stipends towards living costs.
- Priority is given to applicants seeking their first master’s degree. Candidates who have already earned a master’s degree are not given priority for scholarships.
Only candidates admitted to a Master of Science programme commencing Autumn 2024 will be considered for this scholarship.

Studying in Norway
The Norwegian higher education sector is known for its high academic standards, innovative teaching methods and close, informal relations between students and lecturers.
The Norwegian Embassy has experienced fraud in some cases regarding scholarship. Please do not pay money to a company or persons that promise they will arrange for a study permit. The Embassy highly recommend that you only keep in touch with the school, UDI or the Embassy.
It is possible to study interesting combinations of subjects at Norwegian universities and university colleges, and a wide range of courses and programmes is available in English for international students.
In addition, student life at most higher education institutions is very dynamic, and there are a range of social activities on offer.
International students give many reasons as to why they like studying in Norway: the safe, peaceful, and technologically advanced society; the magnificent scenery; the opportunity to take part in a variety of outdoor sports and activities – summer and winter; and the fact that studying in Norway will enhance their career opportunities, both in Norway and in other countries.
How do I apply?
You can do part of your degree in Norway through one of the established exchange programmes or agreements between institutions, or you can come to Norway to follow an entire Bachelors or Masters degree course.
Read more about the advantages of studying in Norway, find universities and university colleges that offer courses in English, and find out how to apply at studyinnorway.no .

These scholarships vary in nature and are either government-led or institution-led. Among the many countries that provide this facility, the top provider is Norway.

Several Norwegian institutions, such as NTNU and the University of Oslo , are constant favorites among global rankings for their outstanding education and degrees that are acknowledged all over the globe.
Some of Norway’s strong education subject areas are marine science, renewable energy, and technology. This is due to the country’s profusion of top-notch universities and their exceptional academics, making the country an excellent choice for overseas students. Its educational institutions prioritize research-based, collaborative learning that fosters analytical thinking and practical skills.
Another big advantage is for EU/EEA students, education in public universities of Norway is free , but a significant tuition fee is required from applicants from other countries. Its massive Scholarships and focus on research are some additional benefits of Norway’s higher education.
Are There Scholarships Available for International Students in Norway?
Yes, there are a variety of scholarships offered to international students, with full-funding and partial-funding options available. Financial aid programs are conducted for international students to give financial support to international students so they can pursue higher education. However, no government-funded scholarships are available for foreign applicants at the moment. They can look for external options or university-led scholarships.
All the scholarships have different qualifying criteria and different fund amounts, duration of application, and other advantages. This is a great initiative for foreign students, as Norway’s institutes for non-EU/EEA students can get expensive. Qualifying students with outstanding academic skills can make use of these grants easily.
Norway is considered educationally diverse yet is consistent in global ranking regarding education quality. There are several scholarship opportunities offered by external sources and institutes within Norway, which foreign students can avail at their best.
We hope this article on the best scholarships in Norway was helpful and insightful. If you are planning to study in Norway, our Study in Norway has valuable information and tips for perusing. Also, make sure to check out the Available Programs in Europe !

Hi, my name is Justin Zarwolo Saye, an African. How do we get a fully funded scholarship in Public Health?
Hello, you need to apply for fully funded scholarships. Usually, scholarships are not based on the actual degrees or majors, like public health unless you are applying for a project-based Ph.D. You do need high marks in your previous degree with research experience or publications recommended for course based Master’s and required for research Master’s and Ph.D. If you would like to view fully funded scholarships, check out Best Fully Funded Scholarships for International Students and All Fully Funded Scholarships for International Students in our database.
