Who Is Emma Watson?

Emma Watson was born on April 15, 1990, in Paris, France, but raised in England. The actress got her big break as a child with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone , growing up on screen as she reprised her role of Hermione Granger through the franchise's eight films. Watson went on to enjoy success in the fashion and modeling industries, and continued to prove her abilities as an actress with roles in films like My Week with Marilyn , The Perks of Being a Wallflower , Beauty and the Beast and Little Women .

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born on April 15, 1990, in Paris. Her parents, both British lawyers, are Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson. Her brother, Alex, was born three years later. Her parents divorced when Watson was 5, and she moved back to Oxfordshire in England with her mother and brother.

Watson attended the Stagecoach Theatre Arts school at Oxford. She studied singing, acting and dancing, and performed in school plays. Her natural instinct for acting first came out when she won a poetry competition for reciting James Reeves' "The Sea" at age 7.

Playing Hermione Granger in 'Harry Potter'

Watson had never acted professionally when her theater teachers suggested her to agents looking to cast an upcoming movie based on the first novel of the best-selling Harry Potter series. A 9-year-old Watson auditioned eight times for the role that would make her an international star. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling , who was deeply involved in the film process to make sure it stayed true to the book, wanted Watson involved in the project.

Watson sufficiently impressed casting agents and the film's producers, and won the role of Hermione Granger, Harry Potter's smart, bossy best friend and voice of reason. Harry Potter was portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe , and Rupert Grint was cast as Ron Weasley, Harry's other best friend. The trio of British child actors would become known around the globe for their roles as young wizards fighting a battle between good and evil, beginning with the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in November 2001.

Watson's film debut was an enormous success: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone earned a record-breaking $33.3 million on its opening day in the United States, en route to grossing $975 million worldwide. It was nominated for three Academy Awards and seven BAFTA Awards, with Watson receiving critical praise to cement her status as an up-and-coming star.

For the next decade Watson stayed busy filming the Potter series. She reprised the role of Hermione for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002 and for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004, and continued to star in the eight-part series through the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 , in 2011.

Although they spent their adolescence on film sets, Watson and costars Radcliffe and Grint kept up with their lessons, with five hours of tutoring each day. Watson took high school equivalency exams, and made high scores in every subject. She took a year off from school to film the final two Harry Potter movies, but maintained that she was committed to furthering her education.

Watson tried hard to shed her child star image, one so closely tied to the Potter franchise. “I have lived in a complete bubble. They found me and picked me for the part. And now I’m desperately trying to find my way through it,” she said in an interview with Vogue in 2011.

Fashion and Education

As a teenager coming of age as an established movie star, Watson also emerged as a fashionista, her style catching the eye of many major figures in the fashion industry. "I love fashion. I think it's so important, because it's how you show yourself to the world," she once told Teen Vogue .

In September 2009 Watson announced that she was working with People Tree, a fashion label that promotes fair trade. Watson catapulted into the world of high fashion and modeling when she was chosen as the face of Burberry's Autumn/Winter 2009 collection, and again for the 2010 Spring/Summer collection.

Watson took fans by surprise when she chopped off her long locks, and debuted a pixie haircut in August 2010. The new 'do helped her shed the child star image of her Potter days, and in July 2011, Watson graced the cover of Vogue . The next month, she starred in a commercial for Lancôme perfume.

Maintaining her commitment to her education, Watson enrolled as a freshman at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, in the fall of 2009. Watson claimed she chose an American university over a British education because the American system allows students to study many subjects at once. Brown was also a place, Watson said, where she could more easily blend in. “I want to be normal,” she said. "I really want anonymity."

In March 2011 Watson revealed that she was deferring her schooling to work on the Potter finale. In July she announced plans to return to Brown for a year to complete her degree after studying at Oxford University in the fall. She graduated from Brown in 2014 with an English degree. That same year, she was appointed a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

'Ballet Shoes,' 'The Tale of Despereaux'

Although Watson became closely identified with the character of Hermione Granger, as an adolescent the young actress wanted to be seen as more. In 2007 she starred in another film based on a children's novel, Ballet Shoes, by Noel Streatfeild. The film aired on BBC One, garnering decent reviews with Watson in the lead role. In 2008 she branched out into animated work, voicing the character of Princess Pea in The Tale of Despereaux .

'Beauty and the Beast'

After the conclusion of Harry Potter , Watson was cast in My Week with Marilyn (2011), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), The Bling Ring (2013), This Is The End (2013) and Noah (2014). In 2017 she played the lead role of Belle in the live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast , which became the highest-grossing live action musical of all time.

That year Watson won the MTV Movie & TV Awards' inaugural gender-neutral award for Best Actor in Movie. “MTV’s move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone,” said Watson. “But to me, it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. And that doesn’t need to be separated into two different categories.”

'The Circle,' 'Little Women'

Also in 2017 Watson joined Tom Hanks and John Boyega for the thriller The Circle , which earned middling reviews despite its strong cast. Next up for the actress was the prominent role of Meg March in Greta Gerwig 's 2019 adaptation of Little Women .

Emma is good looking pretty artist i had ever seen

Her shoe size is US 8.

I can say about this, how u get this info?,it is fake?

It’s 8.5, actually. I saw a close-up of her in heels with EU 39 on it. I’ll try to find it again.

emma ilove u i want to meet u i hope my message will reach to her my life is boring with out emma name i wnat to meet u and and tell u how much i love u:….:…….:….:

Grandfather? Don’t you mean grandmother??

Yup, you are right. Corrected.

I LOVE YOU ”EMMA” Will You Marry Me???? ??? ?? ?

me 5’5″ /165cm ! oh height 5’5″ / 165cm

I love Emma. Interesting info. Though I find it hard to believe that her waist is 23″ at 5’5″ and 110 lbs. I am 5’1″, have a petite frame (smaller than Emma’s) and am naturally underweight at 86 lbs. My waist is 24″ with a flat stomach. I looked at the tape measure to see 23″. Even with Emma’s toned flat stomach there is no way she’s that small given her frame and weight. Logically, it doesn’t make sense that I would have a 24″ waist at 86 lbs and she 23″ at 110 lbs. I’d have to see the measuring done in person to believe it.

Actually it is. Given that she has a longer frame and hips that flare as so wide(there is more distance from her rib cage to her hips), her body has the ability to create the deeper dip of a 23″ waist. Also, judging by her toned body, her body fat % is low as well as her muscle mass. So, she is altogether as lithe as a model. (One with hips anyway)

That makes sense. Height and length of torso makes a difference. Given my thin frame, very low body fat % and muscle mass (I’m trying to tone what little I have)if I were taller I would look sickly. Everything is in perspective. In any case Emma looks great!

it doesn’t matter about height when it comes to waist sizes, there are people who are “5’7 with a 24 inch waist, i’m “5’3 and i have a 22 inch waist, megan fox is “5’4 and she also has a 22 inch waist (said it herself in an interview.) you can do waist exercises to reduce your waist size its no biggy (:

I LIKE YOU VERY MUCH “EMMA CHARLOTTE DUERRE WATSON” I want to meet you! Will you meet me ??? ??? ?? ?

Emma is a very private person. All I can find are rumours about her boyfriend’s. Today I found 2. Please feel free to discuss her measurements. Nothing more than that and her career will show up. Don’t Love her. Respect her. Damn it. She’s a Beautiful Woman, but that’s all I know. Guys in love with her, grow up.

My sister is 104 pounds at 5’7 and her waist is like 27 or 26 inches so weight has nothing to do with waist size. It’s possible to have an 23 in waist at her height

Emma is so beautiful and pretty!!! She is one of my favorite actress

Emma Watson was born in Paris, France, the daughter of English lawyers Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson.Watson lived in Paris until the age of five. Her parents separated when she was young; following their divorce, she moved with her mother and younger brother to Oxfordshire, spending weekends at her father’s house in London.

You are so sweet

i like the actress emma Watson she is my favorite. speakin of measurements, I am also a 32b. I have a tiny waist but I have fairly muscular legs and a little bit of muscle in my arms. I like emma Watson cuz she seems like a nice person I watched her on ellen and I bet the people that talked to her and didn’t know who she was and then she told ellen what happened I bet those people feel really stupid for not recognizing emma sooner.

hey cherryblosson, we’d all be that pretty if we had professionals to do our makeup and make us look flawless.

U cannot be pretty anyway.

I love u emma i can die 4 u. I am 13 years old but still i can do anything 4 u. U r my life emma

Same here dude

Emma has never said that she smokes, nor has she ever been photographed smoking, nor has anyone ever seen her smoking

Just a small comment to correct her measurements…32-23-34 in… if she wears a 32B bra, then her bust measurement isn’t 32 as that is the measurement of her ribcage below the breasts. For each letter (A, B, C, etc) you add an inch. Therefore, her measurements would be 34-23-34… a ‘perfect’ figure as the goal is to have the same measurement for bust and hips with the waist 10 inches smaller. It would be nice to see these written correctly. Thanks.

32B is obviously the wrong size. The band should be roughly the same as the underbust measurement and the underbust measurement isn’t usually more than a couple inches larger than the waist measurement. Her bra size is more likely somewhere around 26E (26DDD US) if her waist and bust measurements were correctly reported, maybe around 28D if her waist was reported as smaller than it actually is or her ribcage expands much more quickly from the waist than most women around her build.

It is actually “The REMAINS of the Day” by Kazuo Ishiguro and not the remainders.

I love u so much emma ! So cuteyy emma

You are so so sweet !! !! !! !

I love your acting. & u

her and Matthew Janney are not dating anymore.

Emma is really get she is the ideal global superstar every thing she does has a grace she is an ideal women and a beautiful girl

She is French because she was born in France

She is not french! She is english but was born in France!

She looks so tinny tiny to me! 5′ 3″ 102 lbs. 32″ 21″ 32″ I’m wrong again!

Emma is soooo amazing!

Got my driver’s license a day after and past on my first attempt.

I LOVE EMMA WATSON! She has been my favorite actress since I was 6!

I love emma watson 🙂 Though I don’t think she has the french citizenship, she’s definitely british even though she was born in France. France does not give the citizenship if you’re just born there.

Hi I like emma emma watson is ao beautiful

she is pretty

She isn’t French. Her parents were British.

What the hell Emma doesn’t have dark brown eyes, her eyes are are light brown/hazel.

Emma doesn’t follow a religion. While doing press for Noah she stated that she doesn’t follow a specific religious doctrine but that she does believe in a ‘higher power’.

I always read different things about this height weight issue- here that she weighs 53kg at 165cm which sounds healthy to me on others 50kg…so what is more right? I always saw her as someone within a healthy weight range which is rare in Hollywood but now I am not so sure anymore…of course she is stunning in character/ Intelligence but because of that I was hoping for her to become a new role model in Hollywood..I really admire her not for her figure but for her as a person and actress of course. Hope you get what I mean.

She says in an interview that her biceps size is nearly 14 inches flexed and a bit over 10 inches unflexed

Emma Watson’s Complete Dating History: Prince Harry, Chord Overstreet and More Francis Boulle Jay Barrymore Rafael Cebrián George Craig Johnny Simmons Will Adamowicz Matthew Janney Prince Harry Roberto Aguire William “Mack” Knight Brendan Wallace

I was so happy to see Emma Watson finally posted on Twitter after her long absense. Although, I was sad to see the engagement rumors weren’t true… I guess her and Leo Robinton are not engaged. The last movie I saw with Emma was Beauty And The Beast. It was better than Harry Potter I thought.

Watson began acting in earnest in 1999 after she auditioned for a part in the film adaptation of J.K. Rowling ’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001). She won the role of smart and logical Hermione, one of Harry Potter’s best friends. The film was a box-office hit, and Watson reprised her role in the franchise’s other movies: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011).

Emma Watson Opens Up About Her ‘Emotional’ Return to Hogwarts

Image may contain Human Person Finger Clothing and Apparel

For fans of the era-defining Harry Potter series, it’s difficult to believe that two decades have passed since Daniel Radcliffe first picked up his wand as the titular Boy Who Lived. But, on New Year’s Day, *Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts—*broadcast on HBO Max—marked this milestone with a lavish and heartfelt reunion. It featured waltzes in the Great Hall, secrets shared in the Gryffindor common room, the revelation that Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell cracked his ribs while play-fighting with James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley), and that Radcliffe had penned a love letter to his co-star Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange).

Many of the standout moments in the nearly two-hour-long extravaganza, however, came courtesy of Emma Watson . The now 31-year-old actor, who has since played Belle in Beauty and the Beast and Meg March in Little Women , opened up about the joys and challenges of embodying the precocious Hermione Granger in eight blockbusters filmed over 10 years. She recalled how, as a 10-year-old, she wanted the part so badly that it worried her parents; the day she “fell in love” with Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy); and the time she considered leaving the franchise because “the fame thing had finally hit home.” Even more affecting? The scene where she and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) reflect on having grown up together and agree that they’ll always be family even if they don’t see each other all the time. As they hug and Watson wipes away a tear, even casual viewers are guaranteed to weep.

As we continue to pore over every detail of the TV special, Watson speaks exclusively to Vogue about its most emotional sequences, whether she would return to Hogwarts in another 20 years, and what she and Felton really think of the public reaction to their headline-making comments about each other.

Being back on the Harry Potter set was “heaven,” Watson says.

Vogue : Do you remember when you first heard about the possibility of a 20th-anniversary reunion?

Emma Watson: Tom [Felton] gave the game away by hosting a “19-year reunion,” so the 20th anniversary was definitely in my mind with a fair bit of run up!

How did it feel to be with your castmates again on those incredible sets?

Like heaven, honestly. I am just so happy they still exist! Most film sets are torn down the minute a scene is finished. I am so happy they are still there for people to enjoy, me included. Stuart Craig is truly a genius. What he did is perfect.

What was it like to sit down with Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint in the Gryffindor common room?

It was emotional and also intense to have such an intimate moment so closely watched. Mostly I was just so happy to have a mediator who could ask us these questions and get to be part of seeing how differently—and similarly—we had processed things. I love that we remembered different things.

You spoke about your childhood crush on Tom Felton and fans loved it. What has it been like for you and Tom to see that?

[ Laughs. ] We speak most weeks, and we just think it’s sweet.

You have a lovely moment with Rupert towards the end. Was that the most emotional moment of the reunion for you, or was it something else?

No, that was the most emotional moment for me. When Rupert says things, he really means them. I was taken aback by how vulnerable and kind he was deciding to be so publicly. Similarly for Dan, it really touched me how reflective he had been over the years about how different it had been for me as a girl.

The response to the reunion has been amazing. Are you, Dan and Rupert on a group chat, and have you been talking about it?

They both hate WhatsApp and their phones in general. Actually, as a three, we really try and stay off electronics so that doesn’t help for a massive amount of back and forth. We aren’t on a group chat but we speak individually. Rupert sends me pictures of [his daughter] Wednesday and I die. Dan and I generally try and calm each other’s nerves. We both mainly try and stay out of the limelight so it’s been nice to have each other’s support, knowing there was going to be another wave of attention coming.

The Antioxidant Everyone Should Take After Age 40

If you could go back in time and speak to that 10-year-old version of yourself who was so eager to play Hermione that it terrified her parents, what would you say?

That’s a whole article I might write one day.

What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned from working on the Harry Potter films?

I don’t think there was anything I didn’t learn. That was the beauty of it. It was my kindergarten, school, and university. Animals, special effects, media training, stunts… it was endless. I feel so thankful.

And would you come back to Hogwarts for another reunion 20 years from now?

Definitely.

What’s next for you in 2022?

You’ll have to wait and see, but there are projects...

Harry Potter cast members reunite in the first trailer for the 20th anniversary special

An emotional reunion in the halls of Hogwarts

Petrana Radulovic

In the first trailer for Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, the main trio — Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint — step back into the Wizarding World, from Diagon Alley, Platform 9 3⁄4, and eventually to Hogwarts itself. The three have some emotional words to say about the movies ... and each other.

“I’ve watched you grow up,” says Grint in the trailer. “And I’ve seen kind of every stage of your life.”

They’re not the only cast members to return for this special event. A whole range of Harry Potter alumni, from big roles to small, will reunite, including Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), Gary Oldman (Sirius Black), James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley), Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley), Alfred Enoch (Dean Thomas), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), and Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood).

The 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone arrives at a controversial time for the franchise. While new films set in the Wizarding World continue to be made — with the next Fantastic Beasts movie hitting theaters in April — many former fans have actively disavowed the series due to author J.K. Rowling’s stance on trans rights . Rowling will not be in the reunion special, though Warner Bros. has said she will appear in archive footage .

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will premiere on HBO Max on Jan. 1, 2022.

Emma Watson gives rare life update in 33rd birthday post

After some time away from the public eye, Emma Watson is back on Instagram — at least for the time being — to celebrate her birthday.

In a series of six posts shared to her Instagram on April 15, the former “Harry Potter” star celebrated her 33rd birthday with pictures and captions that detailed all that she’s been up to since the COVID-19 era. The actor’s last post to her Instagram account was shared on  D e cember 1 4, 2022 , and was for an ad for Prada.

Watson’s birthday post featured mostly black-and-white pictures of the star and some wild updates about her life, including the fact that she has learned about the phenomenon of Saturn Return. Watson also detailed the new skills that time spent in therapy, as well as with friends and family, have afforded her.

“This is 33. Holy moly. Before 29, I hadn’t even heard of a Saturn Return as a concept. Let’s just say that now I am well acquainted,” she began the post before adding a sweep of emojis that included a sweaty laugh emoji, a grave, a coffin, a zombie monster, a comet and a volcano.

The actor shared that she took some time to step away from her life, noting that she used that space to learn how to surf, ride horses and do “a lot of therapy.” In 2021, following an extended hiatus on social media,  Watson addressed rumors that she had decided to retire from her career with a statement on Twitter that appeared to deny the claims.

In her recent Instagram post, Watson revealed that she had also collaborated on a project with her brother called "Renais." According to  GOV.UK , Reinais was filed as a company in March 2022 for the “wholesale of wine, beer, spirits and other alcoholic beverages.”

In continuation of her post, Watson reflected on filming the "Harry Potter" reunion and adopting her dog Sofia from Mexico, who she remarked “seems to be an angel, not a dog.”

Watson also touched on the passing of her grandmother and grandfather.

“I started a women’s environmental investment fund. I played Pickleball with @sugarrayleonard,” she also noted. “I even played golf and then tried to make all of my girlfriends learn too. I cut my thumb nail off on both hands trying to cook for myself and then was only able to do things one handed for months.”

“I felt really sad and really pissed off about a lot of things. I learned more about love and being a woman,” she added. “It took me three years, but I have finally figured out a daily practice and can actually keep it for more than a few days in a row. I burned some things down.”

In addition to getting to a place in her life where she “eats green things now,” Watson’s post shared that she also got behind the camera for the first time as a director of a commercial. She also admitted that the pictures in her post had been taken last year, on her 32 birthday, but at the time, she hadn’t felt quite ready to come out of her “Covid Cocoon.”

The actor, who also famously starred in “The Bling Ring,” then added four blue butterfly emojis, potentially indicating she’s ready to emerge.

“Thank you to the witches in my coven who were so pivotal in helping me arrive at where and who I am now,” she concluded. “You are my Avengers, and you inspire me and kick ass. It takes a village, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

Before ending her note, Watson thanked her brother, stylist Jessica Diehl, photographer Mack Breeden and Prada Beauty, among others.

Emma Watson Says She's 'Here for 'All' of the Witches' at BAFTA Awards in Apparent Dig at J.K. Rowling

Emma Watson previously spoke out in support of the trans community in a series of 2020 tweets

emma watson biography 2022

Emma Watson is shouting out her fellow witches — no matter who they may be!

At the 2022 BAFTA Awards on Sunday, the Harry Potter actress took the stage to present the award for outstanding British film to Belfast (which, coincidentally, was written and directed by her former Harry Potter costar Kenneth Branagh ).

Watson, 31, was introduced by host Rebel Wilson , who said, "Here to present the next award is Emma Watson. She calls herself a feminist, but we all know she's a witch."

As she took the stage, Watson noted, "I'm here for all of the witches," as shown in video footage shared by U.K. outlet The Independent .

While Watson did not provide context for her remark, she notably tweeted support for the trans community back in June 2020 after Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling came under fire for appearing to support anti-transgender sentiments in a series of tweets.

Though she denied that her views on feminism are transphobic, Rowling, 56, doubled down on her controversial standpoints in a lengthy essay shared on her website days later.

"Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren't who they say they are," Watson tweeted on June 10, 2020.

She added in a follow-up tweet , "I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are."

Watson's costars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint also spoke out against Rowling's much-criticized remarks regarding the transgender community.

Radcliffe, 32, stated definitively in an essay for The Trevor Project that "transgender women are women," writing at the time, "Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I."

Additionally, Grint, 33, said in a statement at the time, "I firmly stand with the trans community and echo the sentiments expressed by many of my peers. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment."

Rowling was noticeably absent from the newly filmed portions of the recent Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special, which aired New Year's Day on HBO Max, appearing only in archival footage.

In 2019, Watson starred as Meg March (replacing Emma Stone, who dropped out of the film due to scheduling conflicts) in Greta Gerwig's Academy Award-nominated adaptation of Little Women, co-starring with Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh , Timothée Chalamet, Laura Dern, and Meryl Streep.

In July 2019, Watson helped to launch a legal advice line for people who have suffered sexual harassment at work. Legal advice is provided by Rights of Women, a charity which works to help women through the law.

Watson is single, which she described in 2019 with the self-coined phrase "self-partnered". While working on the film Noah, Watson was questioned about her faith, and she described herself as a spiritual Universalist.

Marai Larasi, an activist on the issue of violence against women, was her guest to the 75th Golden Globe Awards in 2018.

Watson played Belle in the 2017 live action Disney adaptation of Beauty and the Beast directed by Bill Condon , and starring opposite Dan Stevens as the Beast. The film earned over $1.2 billion at the box office and emerged as the second highest-grossing film of 2017, behind only Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and the 14th highest-grossing film of all time. Her reported fee was $3 million upfront with profit participation, bringing her total salary up to $15 million. The filmed garnered mainly positive reviews; writing for the Chicago Sun-Times, Richard Roeper thought her performance was "all pluck and spunk and sass and smarts and fierce independence as Belle". Later that year, she starred opposite Tom Hanks in the film adaptation of Dave Eggers's novel The Circle, playing Mae Holland, a young tech worker who takes a job at a powerful Internet corporation, only to find herself in a perilous situation concerning privacy, surveillance and freedom.

Watson was criticised in March 2017 for a photograph published by Vanity Fair in which her breasts are partly visible; some in the news media accused Watson of hypocrisy. She was bemused by the backlash, arguing that feminism "is not a stick with which to beat other women" but is instead about freedom, liberation and equality, commenting "I really don't see what my tits have to do with it."

In January 2016, Watson started a feminist Goodreads book club: Our Shared Shelf. The goal of the club is to share feminist ideas and encourage discussion on the topic. One book is selected per month and is discussed in the last week of that month. The first book to be selected was My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem, whom Watson would later interview on 24 February at the How to: Academy in London.

Watson took the top spot on the AskMen "Top 99 Outstanding Women 2015" list on the strength of having "thrown her back" into women's rights issues. The day after she turned 25, Watson placed number 26 on the TIME 100 list of the world's most influential people, her first-ever appearance on the list. For its recap, former New York Times editor Jill Abramson noted Watson's "gutsy, smart take on feminism" and called the effort to get men involved "refreshing".

Watson told Ellen DeGeneres just before graduation that it took five years to finish instead of four because, owing to her acting work, she "ended up taking two full semesters off". On 25 May 2014, she graduated from Brown University with a bachelor's degree in English literature. In 2013, she became certified to teach yoga and meditation. As part of this certification, she attended a week-long meditation course at a Canadian facility, in which residents are not allowed to speak, in order "to figure out how to be at home with myself". She told Elle Australia that an uncertain future meant finding "a way to always feel safe and at home within myself. Because I can never rely on a physical place."

Watson joined Judi Dench, Robert Downey Jr., Mike Leigh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Mark Ruffalo as recipients of the 2014 Britannia Awards, presented on 30 October in Los Angeles. Watson won for British Artist of the Year and dedicated her award to Millie, her pet hamster who died as Watson filmed Philosopher's Stone. Watson starred in two 2015 releases, the thriller films Colonia, opposite Daniel Brühl and Michael Nyqvist; and Regression by Alejandro Amenábar, alongside Ethan Hawke and her Harry Potter colleague David Thewlis. Both received generally negative reviews. She also appeared in an episode of The Vicar of Dibley, in which she played Reverend Iris. In February 2016, Watson announced she was taking a year-long break from acting. She planned to spend the time on her "personal development" and her women's rights work.

Watson was awarded Best British Style at the 2014 British Fashion Awards. The competition included David Beckham, Amal Clooney , Kate Moss, and Keira Knightley.

Watson has promoted education for girls, visiting Bangladesh and Zambia to do so. In July 2014, she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill ambassador. In September that year, an admittedly nervous Watson delivered an address at UN Headquarters in New York City to launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which calls for men to advocate for gender equality. In that speech she said she began questioning gender-based assumptions at age eight when she was called "bossy" (a trait she has attributed to her being a "perfectionist") whilst boys were not, and at 14 when she was "sexualised by certain elements of the media". Watson's speech also called feminism "the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities" and declared that the perception of "man-hating" is something that "has to stop". Watson later said she received threats within 12 hours of making the speech, which left her "raging. ... If they were trying to put me off [women's rights work], it did the opposite". In 2015, Malala Yousafzai told Watson she decided to call herself a feminist after hearing Watson's speech.

Also in September, Watson made her first country visit as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador to Uruguay where she gave a speech highlighting the need for women's political participation. In December, the Ms. Foundation for Women named Watson its Feminist Celebrity of 2014, following an online poll. Watson also gave a speech about gender equality in January 2015, at the World Economic Forum's annual winter meeting.

In The Bling Ring (2013), Watson stars as Nicki. The film is based on the real-life Bling Ring robberies, with Watson playing a fictionalised version of Alexis Neiers , a television personality who was one of seven teenagers involved in the robberies. While the film mostly received mixed reviews, critics gave almost unanimous praise for Watson's portrayal. Watson also had a supporting role in the apocalyptic comedy This Is the End (2013), in which she, Seth Rogen, James Franco and many others played "exaggerated versions of themselves" and Watson memorably dropped the "f-bomb". She said she could not pass up the opportunity to make her first comedy and "work with some of the best comedians ... in the world right now".

In June 2012, Watson was confirmed for the role as Ila in Darren Aronofsky's Noah, which began filming the following month, and was released in March 2014. In March 2013, it was reported that Watson was in negotiations to star as the title character in a live-action Disney adaptation of Cinderella. Kenneth Branagh was attached to direct the adaptation, while Cate Blanchett had reportedly agreed to play the evil stepmother. Watson was offered the role, but turned it down because she did not connect with the character. The role ultimately went to Lily James . In October 2013, Watson was chosen as the Woman of the Year by British GQ. That same month, she was one of two British actors to land atop a readers' poll of the sexiest movie stars of 2013, beating Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence for the actresses' title in an online poll of more than 50,000 film fans. Benedict Cumberbatch took the men's vote.

From 2011 to 2014, Watson split her time between working on films and continuing her education, graduating from Brown University with a bachelor's degree in English literature in May 2014. Her modelling work has included campaigns for Burberry and Lancôme. She also lent her name to a line of clothing for People Tree. She was honoured by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2014, winning British Artist of the Year. That same year, she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill ambassador and helped launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which encourages gender equality.

She also appeared in a music video for One Night Only, after meeting lead singer George Craig at the 2010 Winter/Summer Burberry advertising campaign. The video, Say You Don't Want It, was screened on Channel 4 on 26 June 2010 and released on 16 August. In her first post-Harry Potter film, Watson appeared in 2011's My Week with Marilyn as Lucy, a wardrobe assistant who is flirted with by the main character, Colin Clark , and has a few dates with him.

In May 2010, Watson was reported to be in talks to star in Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower, based on the 1999 novel of the same name. Filming began in summer 2011, and the film was released in September 2012. Watson plays Sam, a high school senior who befriends a fellow student called Charlie (Logan Lerman), and helps him through his freshman year. The film opened to favourable reviews; David Sexton of the London Evening Standard opined that Watson's performance was "plausible and touching".

Watson took a gap year after leaving high school, to film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows beginning in February 2009, but said she intended to continue her studies and later confirmed that she had chosen Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. In March 2011, after 18 months at the university, Watson announced that she was deferring her course for "a semester or two", though she attended Worcester College, Oxford during the 2011–12 academic year as part of the Visiting Student Programme.

Watson's filming for the final instalment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, began on 18 February 2009 and ended on 12 June 2010. For financial and scripting reasons, the original book was divided into two films which were shot consecutively. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 was released in November 2010 while the second film was released in July 2011. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 became a commercial and critical success. The highest-grossing film in the franchise, it grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide and proved to be Watson's most commercially successful film to date.

In September 2009, Watson announced her involvement with People Tree, a Fair trade fashion brand. Watson worked as a creative adviser for the company to create a spring line of clothing, which was released in February 2010; the range featured styles inspired by southern France and London. The collection, described by The Times as "very clever" despite their "quiet hope that [she] would become tangled at the first hemp-woven hurdle", was widely publicised in magazines such as Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and People. Watson, who was not paid for the collaboration, admitted that competition for the range was minimal, but argued that "Fashion is a great way to empower people and give them skills; rather than give cash to charity you can help people by buying the clothes they make and supporting things they take pride in"; adding, "I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian issues surrounding fast fashion and want to make good choices but there aren't many options out there." Watson continued her involvement with People Tree, resulting in the release of a 2010 Autumn/Winter collection.

Principal photography for the sixth Harry Potter film began in late 2007, with Watson's part being filmed from 18 December to 17 May 2008. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince premiered on 15 July 2009, having been delayed from November 2008. With the lead actors now in their late teens, critics were increasingly willing to review them on the same level as the rest of the film's all-star cast, which the Los Angeles Times described as "a comprehensive guide to contemporary UK acting". The Washington Post felt Watson to have given "[her] most charming performance to date", while The Daily Telegraph described the lead actors as "newly liberated and energised, eager to give all they have to what's left of the series". In December 2008, Watson stated she wanted to go to university after she completed the Potter series.

Watson also appeared in the 2007 television adaptation of the novel Ballet Shoes and lent her voice to The Tale of Despereaux (2008). After the last Harry Potter film, she took on starring and supporting roles in My Week with Marilyn (2011), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) and The Bling Ring (2013), made an appearance as an exaggerated version of herself in This Is the End (2013), and portrayed the titular character's adopted daughter in Noah (2014). She went on to star as Belle in the musical romantic fantasy Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Meg March in the coming-of-age film Little Women (2019), the latter of which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Her other film roles include Regression (2015), Colonia (2015), and The Circle (2017).

The fifth film in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was released in 2007. A huge financial success, the film set a record worldwide opening-weekend gross of $332.7 million. Watson won the inaugural National Movie Award for Best Female Performance. As the fame of the actress and the series continued, Watson and fellow Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint left imprints of their hands, feet and wands in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on 9 July 2007.

By July 2007, Watson's work in the Harry Potter series was said to have earned her more than £10 million, and she acknowledged she would never have to work for money again. In March 2009, she was ranked 6th on the Forbes list of "Most Valuable Young Stars", and in February 2010, she was named as Hollywood's highest paid female star, having earned an estimated £19 million in 2009.

Despite the success of Order of the Phoenix, the future of the Harry Potter franchise became surrounded in doubt, as all three lead actors were hesitant to sign on to continue their roles for the final two episodes. Radcliffe eventually signed for the final films on 2 March 2007, but Watson was considerably more hesitant. She explained that the decision was significant, as the films represented a further four-year commitment to the role, but eventually conceded that she "could never let [the role of] Hermione go", signing for the role on 23 March 2007.

Watson's first non-Potter role was the 2007 BBC film Ballet Shoes, an adaptation of the novel of the same title by Noel Streatfeild . The film's director, Sandra Goldbacher , commented that Watson was "perfect" for the starring role of aspiring actress Pauline Fossil: "She has a piercing, delicate aura that makes you want to gaze and gaze at her." Ballet Shoes was broadcast in the UK on Boxing Day 2007 to an audience of 5.7 million viewers, to mixed reviews. The following year, she voiced the character Princess Pea in the animation The Tale of Despereaux, a children's comedy starring Matthew Broderick, with Harry Potter co-star Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid) also starring in the film. The Tale of Despereaux was released in December 2008 and grossed $87 million worldwide.

By age 10, Watson had performed in Stagecoach productions and school plays including Arthur: The Young Years and The Happy Prince, but she had never acted professionally before the Harry Potter series. After the Dragon School, Watson moved on to Headington School, Oxford. While on film sets, she and her peers were tutored for up to five hours a day. In June 2006, she took GCSE school examinations in 10 subjects, achieving eight A* and two A grades. In May 2007, she took AS levels in English, Geography, Art, and History of Art. The next year, she dropped History of Art to pursue the three A levels, receiving an A grade in each subject.

With Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), both Watson and the Harry Potter film series reached new milestones. The film set records for a Harry Potter opening weekend, a non-May opening weekend in the US, and an opening weekend in the UK. Critics praised the increasing maturity of Watson and her teenage co-stars; The New York Times called her performance "touchingly earnest". For Watson, much of the humour of the film sprang from the tension among the three lead characters as they matured. She said, "I loved all the arguing. ... I think it's much more realistic that they would argue and that there would be problems." Nominated for three awards for Goblet of Fire, Watson won a bronze Otto Award. Later that year, Watson became the youngest person to appear on the cover of Teen Vogue, an appearance she reprised in August 2009. In 2006, Watson played Hermione in The Queen's Handbag, a special mini-episode of Harry Potter in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's 80th birthday.

In 2005, Watson began her modelling career with a photo shoot for Teen Vogue and was the youngest person ever to appear on its cover. Three years later, the British press reported that Watson was to replace Keira Knightley as the face of the fashion house Chanel, but this was denied by both parties. In June 2009, following several months of rumours, Watson confirmed that she would be partnering with Burberry as the face of their Autumn/Winter 2009 campaign, for which she received an estimated six-figure fee. She also appeared in Burberry's 2010 Spring/Summer campaign alongside her brother Alex, musicians George Craig and Matt Gilmour, and model Max Hurd. In February 2011, Watson was awarded the Style Icon award from British Elle by Dame Vivienne Westwood. Watson continued her involvement in fashion advertising when she announced she had been chosen as the face of Lancôme in March 2011.

In 2004, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released. Watson was appreciative of the more assertive role Hermione played, calling her character "charismatic" and "a fantastic role to play". Although critics panned Radcliffe's performance, labelling him "wooden", they praised Watson; The New York Times lauded her performance, saying: "Luckily Mr. Radcliffe's blandness is offset by Ms. Watson's spiky impatience. Harry may show off his expanding wizardly skills ... but Hermione ... earns the loudest applause with a decidedly unmagical punch to Draco Malfoy's deserving nose." Although Prisoner of Azkaban proved to be the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film of the entire series, Watson's personal performance won her two Otto Awards and the Child Performance of the Year award from Total Film.

Watson was born in Paris, France, the daughter of English lawyers Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson . Watson lived in Maisons-Laffitte near Paris until she was five. Her parents divorced when she was young, and Watson moved to England to live with her mother in Oxfordshire while spending weekends at her father's house in London. Watson has said she speaks some French, though "not as well" as she used to. After moving to Oxford with her mother and brother, she attended the Dragon School, remaining there until 2003. From age six, she wanted to become an actress, and trained at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts, a part-time theatre school where she studied singing, dancing, and acting.

The release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2001 was Watson's debut screen performance. The film broke records for opening-day sales and opening-weekend takings and was the highest-grossing film of 2001. Critics praised the performances of the three leads, often singling out Watson for particular acclaim; The Daily Telegraph called her performance "admirable", and IGN said she "stole the show". Watson was nominated for five awards for her performance in Philosopher's Stone, winning the Young Artist Award for Leading Young Actress.

In 1999, casting began for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the film adaptation of British author J. K. Rowling's best-selling novel. Casting agents found Watson through her Oxford theatre teacher, and producers were impressed by her confidence. After eight auditions, producer David Heyman told Watson and fellow applicants Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint that they had been cast for the roles of the school friends Hermione Granger, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, respectively. Rowling supported Watson from her first screen test.

Early Life and Family:

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson, daughter of attorneys Chris Watson and Jacqueline Luesby, was born in Paris on April 15, 1990. When her parents divorced, Watson was living in Maisons-Laffitte, France. Following the divorce, she and her mother relocated to Oxfordshire, and she regularly spent the weekends in London with her father. She fell in love with performing at the age of six and joined Stagecoach Theatre Arts in Oxford to pursue her passion for acting, singing, and dancing. While still a student, Watson appeared in several school plays and theatrical productions, such as Arthur: The Young Years and The Happy Prince, but her first major part came from the Harry Potter series.

Watson was a student at the Oxford Headington School. She received five hours a day of instruction alongside her students while she was filming. She took a gap year to work on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Parts 1 & 2 after passing her GCSE and A-level exams. The following year, she enrolled at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature.

Career:

Emma Watson made her film debut with the 2001 release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. She had to go through eight auditions before being chosen for the character of the wise and brave witch Hermione Granger in the film adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s best-selling book. The film became an immediate hit, shattering numerous records and even becoming the biggest earner of 2001. Emma’s portrayal received recognition and praise, which is an essential outstanding performance in the film. She later became the Leading Young Actress recipient of the Young Artist Award.

In the following Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, she continued to play Hermione, for which she received the Otto Award from the German publication Bravo. The following film in the 2004 series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, came out. Daniel Radcliffe, who played the principal role, received criticism for his work, although Emma was praised for her vibrant and prickly Hermione. She also received the Child Performance of the Year Award from Total Film, as well as a few Otto Awards.

Emma Watson Earned Bronze Otto Award:

Her performance in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which was released in 2005, earned her a Bronze Otto Award. For the subsequent Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which came out in 2007, the effervescent actress went on to win the National Movie Award for Best Female Performance.

Emma Watson Debut Movie:

In 2007, Watson made her debut in a non-Harry Potter film when she played Pauline Fossil in the TV movie Ballet Shoes, which was broadcast on Boxing Day in the UK. She even dabbled in voice acting by voicing Princess Pea in the animated film The Tale of Despereaux, which did alright at the box office.

In the three final Harry Potter films—Part 1, Part 2, and Half-Blood and the Harry Potter Prince—Emma maintained her sincere performances.

Following the culmination of the Harry Potter series, Watson was featured in My Week with Marilyn, which won the Best Group Cast Grant at the Capri Craftsmanship Film Celebration. She won various honors for her job in the film The Advantages of Being a Loner, including Best Supporting Entertainer and Best Troupe Execution at the San Diego Film Pundits Society Grants, Most Loved Show Film Entertainer at Individuals’ Decision Grants, and Entertainer Show Grant at the Youngster Decision Grants.

Among the other films in which the actor has appeared are The Bling Ring (2013), Noah (2014), and Regression (2015). Next, she had a cameo in the BBC sitcom The Vicar of Dibley as The Bishop of Dibley.

Among her 2017 releases are The Circle and Bill Condon’s musical tale Beauty and the Beast.  The movie, which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2017, garnered generally unfavorable reviews once it was released in theatres and tanked financially. She made an appearance in Greta Gerwig’s 2020 film Little Women. The movie received numerous accolades and was nominated for six categories, including Best Picture, at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Emma Watson Relationships/Boyfriends:

In 2006, Watson dated rugby player Tom Ducker for a whole year. Although it was brief, she immediately began dating Francis Boulle, whom she had met at the 2008 Cartier Pool Party. Watson and Boulle’s relationship lasted only a few months before Watson started dating Jay Barrymore. Despite moving in together, the couple’s relationship ended once Watson started attending school since they were unable to maintain it over the distance. At the Burberry shoot in 2010, she first met George Craig, with whom she hit it off right away. Their relationship deteriorated as a result of the distance. Will Adamowicz and Watson were spotted together at Coachella in 2013.

The two started dating after they first connected when Watson was finishing her semester abroad. In 2014, Watson dated Oxford Rugby star Matthew Janney after ending a serious relationship. Watson revealed their breakup the same year after remaining silent about her relationship with him. Since 2015, the Harry Potter actress has been dating William Knight.

Charity work:

Watson also gave the Small Steps Project, which offers emergency relief to people living in difficult circumstances, a pair of expensive Burberry heels. She also collaborated with the Millennium Promise group, whose objective is to eradicate poverty worldwide by 2025. The fight to eradicate poverty worldwide has benefited significantly from Watson.

In July 2014, the British actor Emma Watson was named a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. The distinguished performer, activist, and recent Brown University alumna will focus her work on empowering young women and will support UN Women’s HeForShe initiative to advance gender equality.

Curator’s biography

Emma Watson is an emerging curator, writer and researcher currently pursuing an MLitt in Curatorial Practice (Contemporary Art), jointly delivered by the Glasgow School of Art and the University of Glasgow. She grew up in the UK and South Africa and is currently based between Perthshire, Scotland and Charleston, South Carolina. She holds a BA (Hons) in English and Art History from the University of Sussex (2020) where she was awarded the Mary Dove Prize for Literature. She has previously held internships at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, Charleston (2018), and more recently at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow (2022). She is currently completing an MLitt Curatorial Practice (Contemporary Art) jointly delivered by the Glasgow School of Art and the University of Glasgow.

Curatorial Statement

Emma-Caitlin Watson’s curatorial practice is founded on awareness of the socio-cultural responsibilities of curating, viewing the role of curator to be intimately entangled with social justice. Tending to the notion of abolition as curatorial practice her recent work thinks with/in/through a Black feminist poethics in order to imagine the world otherwise. Aligned with theories and practices that decentre post-Enlightenment thought, she looks to develop a practice that is fluid and iterative, a never-ending process of (un)learning and (un)knowing.

Often concerned with the relationship between the onto-epistemological and the aesthetics, the written/poetic and the visual, Emma’s practice explores the relationship between curating and art writing. Influenced by the ways in which words can carry and labour beyond their capacity, she is drawn to projects that challenge and expand the exhibition form. As such, her practice is invested in programming that makes propositions, explores the impossibility of completeness, and critically evades comprehension.

Emma’s research and curatorial interests include feminist theories and practices, the abstract and the speculative, the quantum and the cosmic, theories of entanglement and leakiness, the capacities of language and grammar, encounters and convergences, creative knowledge production, tangents, and the notion of the end as the continual beginning.

As Matter is an online publication that explores the theory of poethics through creative practice. Framed as an encounter, the publication features artworks by artists Désirée Coral and Fairouz El Tom and writing that corresponds with and writes to these artworks, with design by Freddie Guthrie.

Informed by the writing of theorist Denise Ferreira da Silva, As Matter engages a Black feminist poethics to speculate how to exist otherwise, an unthinking of the world towards its end – decolonisation. As an ethics and a grammar of possibility – an articulation of the future as it will have had to be – poethics offers a disruption of the modern political order of racial subjugation, refusing the limitations of post-Enlightenment thought and its construction of the human.

Exploring multiple ways of knowing and being in the world, Coral and El Tom reflect on the ways we connect and relate to one another, to nature, to the more-than-human and the cosmos. Engaging with the knowledge and the life of materials, Désirée Coral’s practice considers the process of making as thinking, understanding the importance of generating contextual material knowledge. Working in photography, Fairouz El Tom presents semi abstract images of the world, blurring the line between the familiar and the new, creating a visual language that attends to new and endless possibilities for imagining the world.

Through the included artworks, As Matter explores the potential for artistic practice and aesthetics to iterate a radically different future. This notion of imagining otherwise entangles As Matter with the expansive discourse of feminist abolitionists. As such, As Matter seeks to explore the propositions and questions that are raised by the discourse of both a Black feminist poethics and of feminist abolitionists: what would the world and existence look like if it was no longer defined by determinacy, but rather an expression of infinite possibilities, an always coming into being? How would this redefine and reorientate our relationship with the human, the more-than-human, the earth and beyond, towards a more equitable future? By reading and thinking with, in, and through a Black feminist poethics, As Matter invites the reader to depart from the World into the worlds of possibility.

To mark the launch of the publication a conversation with Désirée Coral and Fairouz El Tom was hosted on Zoom on the 3 August 2022 at 7pm. In polyphony with the publication, the artist talk created a space in which to open the conversations that were had throughout the production of As Matter to a wider audience. As an extension of the publication the event created a convergence between artists, curator and audience and demonstrated the iterative nature of the practices and theories around which this project centres and sprawls out from, a constellatory gesture that invited the reader to engage with multiple ways of knowing and being in and of the world.

As Matter, the name

The name of the publication, As Matter, is a phrase taken from Rizvana Bradley and Denise Ferreira da Silva’s co-authored article, ‘ Four Theses on Aesthetics ,’ which was published in e-flux Journal in 2021. The use of the word “matter” in this context can be found in Denise Ferreira da Silva’s writing on the equation of value, ‘ 1 (life) ÷ 0 (blackness) = ∞ − ∞ or ∞ / ∞: On Matter Beyond the Equation of Value ’, published in e-flux Journal in 2017.
