Thala’s one-man show: Valimai review

 alt=

He is the man behind superhits like ‘Sathuranga Vettai,’ ‘Theeran Athikaram Ondru’ and ‘Nerkonda Parvai.’ So it seemed natural that his second association with Ajith was going to be the most awaited one. This time he tells the story of a group of bike racers who are involved in drugs, Satan worship, murder, and robbery. Ajith plays Arjun Kumar IPS who has the task of putting this notorious gang behind the bars. They are known to be the most difficult case to crack for the Tamil Nadu police.

The city is witnessing a rise in chain snatching, murders, and drug deals involving a biker mafia gang. Even the Chennai police force is unable to do anything about this. That’s when Arjun Kumar IPS takes charge of the investigation. He soon realises that he is up against a tough opponent. But manages to quickly unravel the case and comes up with some shocking truths. This gang does all these cruel activities through a website called Satan Saviors. The rest of the film follows Arjun’s attempts to get to the bottom of this case.

The film’s first half flows smoothly backed by a tight screenplay and gripping narrative style. Vinoth has employed a more realistic approach than taking a typical mass masala template. Even the action sequences aren’t over the top and look sleek and well-executed.   A word or two about the neatly done racing scenes and action choreography which were top-notch. There is a terrific 30-minute visual treat just before the interval block. The bike chasing shown on the trailer was also spellbinding. Kudos to the team behind these stunts. They have made minimum use of VFX and gone with live-action sequences.

Expectedly Ajith is the main attraction in ‘Valimai.’ Interestingly his character also shares his passion for bikes in real life. It is said that he has done most of the bike stunts without a dupe. Karthikeya who plays the antagonist was also very impressive. Malayalam actors like Dinesh Karthik, Pearly Mane, and Dhruvam have important roles. Other actors include Huma Qureshi, Sumithra, Raj Ayyappa, Chaitra Reddy. Neerav Shah’s cinematography elevated the frames, especially the chasing scenes were on par with Hollywood action scenes. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music as usual was faultless.

‘Valimai’ which was released in theatres after a long wait of two years has really lived up to all that expectations. If the film focuses on stylish action scenes in the first half, it focuses on family sentiments towards the latter half, and this has really worked with the audience. Ajith fans will not be disappointed and yes, please make sure you watch it only in theatres.

(Valimai Review)

valimai movie review 123telugu

valimai movie review 123telugu

2 Hrs 58 Mins   |   Action   |   24-02-2022

Cast - Ajith Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Karthikeya, Bani,

Director - H Vinoth

Producer - Boney Kapoor

Banner - Bayview Projects LLP; Zee Studios

Music - Yuvan Shankar Raja

After the Pink Tamil remake (Nerkonda Parvai), Ajith Kumar has yet again teamed up with its director H Vinoth for Valimai, an action thriller. Vinoth’s last outing in Telugu was Karthi’s Khakee that was received well. This naturally has generated good buzz around Valimai. Has the film lived up to its hype? Let’s take a look.

What is it about?

Satan’s Slaves is an organised crime done by jobless youth through their motorcyle club. They choose chain snatching, drugs and murders to make quick money. Police couldn’t nab them due to their modus operandi of crime. Arjun (Ajith Kumar) steps in to nab the criminals and put an end to this. Will Arjun succeed? How does Arjun’s family get involved and how does he handle it all?

Performances :

Ajith is no stranger to cop roles. Yet he makes his own mark with the role of police officer Arjun. He looks stylish, smart and dapper. At this age, Ajith gives his best for stunts that stand out in this action thriller. He deserves a pat on his back. In bike sequences and action episodes, Ajith mesmerises. But director Vinoth hasn’t fully utilized Ajith’s capabilities.Karthikeya Gummakonda got a big break as a villain opposite Ajith. He got a substantial role with full-length screen presence. He has delivered what is expected from a smart villain. Huma Qureshi is confined to a fellow investigating officer. She doesn’t get much to showcase. Achyuth Kumar as Ajith’s brother is alright. None of the other actors leave much impact.

Technicalities :

Cop chasing a criminal plot is an age-old plot. Director Vinoth tries to infuse technology, gadgets, bikes and internet-based crime. The concept and modus operandi of crime is striking and appealing. It seems good on paper. But the film falters in its execution. Lack of intriguing scenes does the damage. Background score is impressive. Visuals are appealing. Sound mixing stands out. Production values and stylish making deserve special mention. Lengthy episodes put us off.

Bike Stunts Stylish Presentation

Lengthy Sequences Predictable Twists Family Episodes

Valimai is filled with bikes, helmets, fancy tattoos and latest gadgetry. It is all about drugs, chain snatching and brutal murders. Educated youth who are unable to get jobs and dejected by family and society form as a group called ‘Satan’s Slaves’, a Motorcycle club that is behind all the crimes in Visakhapatnam. Their motive is money. They build a network and they use graffiti for communication through which they send codes for the mission. All these become a big challenge to the police department.

A good, honest police officer Arjun gets transferred from Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam. As soon as he lands in the beach city, his focus shifts on the city’s crimes. The initial proceedings were engaging. The bike stunts, stylish presentations were all good. However, the film moves at snail’s pace. The action thriller is bogged down by the family episodes and unwanted emotions. The first half takes too long testing the audience’s patience. The interval episode is engaging though.

The second half is a big bore. Particularly, the family episodes take the centre stage pushing the main story to the back-seat. The cat-and-mouse sequences should have been better. Action thrillers ought to be taut. But Ajith’s Valimai fails in delivering that. Particularly, the protagonist loses a chunk of energy in fighting against his own police bosses rather than fighting the baddie. And in the end, the villain kidnaps the hero’s family that we’re watching from time immemorial. The blessing in disguise is the investigation scenes. How the hero nabs the villain and his identity, whereabouts make for an interesting watch. Rest all is just filling.

On the whole, it has its moments here and there. The interval episode is good. But that won’t satiate the hunger. The film leaves us asking for more.

Bottom-Line: Not Racy

Rating: 2.5/5

Valimai Movie Review: Laughable Yet Slick, Choose What Of It You Will

Director: H Vinoth

Cast:  Ajith Kumar, Huma Qureshi

Commercial cinema, more specifically 'mass' films, have a nagging conundrum. They need to kindle expectation so when the mass moment comes, it is familiarly satisfying. But they also need to be unpredictable to be truly enjoyable. This is a thin line to straddle. Few filmmakers today are able to build the anticipation of familiarity as well as deliver the surprises — Nelson and Lokesh Kanagaraj come to mind as exceptions. H Vinoth, however, can barely do either.

Valimai is the story of family man Arjun (Ajith Kumar), who is also a shrewd cop. He moves to Chennai to save his elder brother (Achyuth Kumar) from alcoholism, while also catching a deadly gang of murderers and drug kingpins. How he navigates friends, foes, politicians and allies — obviously — forms the rest of the film.

What's clear to anyone watching Valimai is that it's a star vehicle. Ajith gets half a dozen introduction scenes — he rises from a van, he stands on a plank suspended in the air, he gets off a police jeep and walks in slow motion over and over. In the hands of a crafty writer and filmmaker, these scenes would have set the screen on fire. But in Valimai , they are not only predictable, but also laughable.

Take, for instance, the intro scene that establishes the kind of cop Arjun is. He catches young male criminals but doesn't file FIRs against them. Instead, he gives money to their wives and mothers and lectures, them to " buddhi solli thiruthanum" (speak good sense into them). His subordinate asks him why Arjun didn't get the system take care of these people. Arjun explains that the system will only make the situation worse. To this, the subordinate exclaims, " saar neenga vera maari ." As if waiting all his life for just this line, Ghibran diligently cues the title song that goes ' naanga vera maari ' (composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja).

This problem of being obvious and predictable is all over Valimai . At one point, I began predicting what would happen in the desperate hope that H Vinoth would surprise me. But he never did. We've heard every dialogue before, so much so that, you, dear reader, would know from a mile away what anyone is going to say. The jokes are so drab that the characters in the film laugh to guide us in that direction. The interval block is a split screen with Ajith on one side and Karthikeya, who plays the villain, on the other. There is text overlay on screen telling us it's the next day, over the voice of Arjun telling the villain he'll meet him the next day. At one point, there is a paragraph on screen that I couldn't finish reading on time.

This predictability might not entirely be H Vinoth's fault though. We are film-addicted people, and we can probably just tell these things by instinct. Except, Valimai has nothing else going for it either. Ajith can barely emote — he has one uncomfortable face for the entire spectrum of feelings. Karthikeya has more range than Ajith does. When Sophia (Huma Qureshi), with tears brimming in her eyes, asked Arjun why he's speaking dejectedly, I broke into uncontrollable laughter that I couldn't stop until Ajith finished his lecture about life and stones or something.

The characters are all written for the convenience of Arjun. Sophia, for instance, can do sketches of suspects, run analytics, shoot big guns, fight with her bare hands, lead the most challenging mission in Tamil Nadu police history — just about any of the grind work that Arjun can't be bothered to do. To say nothing of being the family friend who shows up for emotional support too. She's everybody and nobody, a role that shortchanges how badass she actually is. Bani J is the villain's sidekick, meted out a similar treatment. To be fair, though, even the men are written in exactly the same superficial fashion.

With such superficial and half-hearted performances, the emotions just don't move us. Arjun's mother (Sumithra trying her damnedest best) punishes herself to a hunger strike, an emotion that should resonate with everyone. Yet, it's treated like a piece of information that we should remember, not an emotion that we feel instinctively. When we watch the villain manipulate Arjun's brother Kutty (Raj Ayyappa), we think of the latter as stupid, not the former as evil. Without the strengths of these emotions, the stakes are never high enough. So, Valimai feels like a superbike stuck in second gear.

Despite all of this, though, what makes Valimai reasonably watchable is Dilip Subbarayan's stunt choreography, deftly supported by cinematographer Nirav Shah. Together, they build action that's a delight to watch. Dilip is inventive, without turning it into something unbelievable. It's the right amount of clever, perfectly right for mainstream. It only helps that the film is about biker gangs — Ajith on the bike is a sight to savour for fans. Even in overlong stunt sequences, the film is enjoyable.

But, be warned that enjoying Valimai , that lasts nearly three hours, takes a special kind of viewer: One who is motivated to have fun and laugh at themselves for enjoying this. Right at the end, as the film climaxes and Arjun rises victorious, his brother taunts the villain, "ei sappa" (hey loser, I suspect). At that point, I found myself thinking he's perhaps talking to me, a loser who had so much fun.

Ajith in Valimai

Story: A dreaded, cold-blooded criminal carries out several crimes in Chennai using a sophisticated network that includes many jobless youngsters. The dispirited police department assigns the case to ACP Arjun Kumar, whose world revolves around his family. But he soon realizes that the criminal is extremely dangerous and that nabbing him is quite a challenge. Can the intelligent cop stop him from indulging in more crimes?

Review: Finally, the much-awaited action flick, Valimai, has hit the screens after keeping fans of Ajith waiting for more than two years. The film has been billed as the face-off between a hi-tech criminal and a smart cop. Director Vinoth's previous films, Yuvan Shankar Raja's music and Dhilip Subbarayan's action scenes are a few reasons, apart from Ajith's presence, which made movie buffs eagerly looking forward to the movie. Has the film managed to meet the humungous expectations?

image_item

What fans of Ajith expect from a regular action film featuring their favourite star are rip-roaring intro scene, engaging fight sequences, gripping screenplay which offers ample scope for him to perform and pulsating background score that elevates his towering screen presence.

Director Vinoth succeeds to a good extent with regard to ticking these boxes. The star gets a stunning intro scene, followed by a fight sequence, adrenaline-pumping action scenes that involve three chase episodes and plenty of emotional sequences, too. But one can't blame those who expect something extraordinary from Vinoth, thanks to the filmmaker's earlier outings. Valimai isn't just about Ajith. It has a few other notable characters as well - while some of them shine in a few scenes - most of the others do not leave a lasting impression.

The movie begins with a few youngsters in Chennai setting out to indulge in 'petty crimes' like chain snatching. There is an effective dialogue later in the film on why those crimes should not be considered as 'petty'. The police department finds that the number of crimes, involving murders, are on an alarming rise in the city.

They rope in Madurai-based Assistant Commissioner of Police, Arjun Kumar (Ajith), to handle the law and order situation in the city which has gone haywire. An emotional person by nature, Arjun, who is attached to his mother and siblings, soon finds that all the major crimes which are happening in Chennai are being carried out by one gang.

A working still of the film

He, along with Sofia (Huma Qureshi), an efficient cop, starts investigating the case and discovers that Naren (Kartikeya), a young, cold-blood criminal is behind all kinds of notorious crimes. The duo also learn that Naren has been single-handedly spearheading an extremely dangerous network of jobless youngsters who are ready to commit crimes without any guilt.

What follows is a cat-and-mouse game between Arjun and Naren. Vinoth comes up with some interesting episodes in the first half; the investigation scenes are organic and the one-man army character of the antagonist is quite convincing, leaving the viewers glued to the screen. The chasing scene in motorbike between Arjun and Naren is a feast for action lovers. Nirav Shah's spectacular visuals complement the stunt choreography.

A small twist involving Arjun's younger brother is okayish; the latter plays a crucial part to the further proceedings in the story. The action scene choreographed by Dhilip involving cops and a bevy of terrifying members of Satan's Slaves is another treat the movie offers in the beginning of the latter half. But the screenplay goes downhill after Arjun takes up a mission in order to save his family from Naren.

A chase scene that follows doesn't leave much impact because of below par VFX works and over-the-top stunts. The emotional scenes which appear later do not succeed in connecting with the audience. The movie also goes on to become a predictable hero-villain fare after a point. Though the message the director tries to convey is relevant to today's times, it appears forced. The much-expected background score disappoints as it fails to elevate some of the crucial sequences.

Ajith excels in the role of a cop once again; he appears confident and oozes swag in action scenes. Huma Qureshi's character is promising in the beginning, but goes on to become an okayish role.

As the menacing villain, Kartikeya does his job well in many scenes. The other characters, including the family members of the protagonist, that are supposed to be engaging, are underwritten.

Verdict: Valimai ends up as an impressive action flick which has a decent screenplay and underwhelming emotional scenes.

Valimai is streaming on Zee5.

Valimai Movie Review: Ajith's film is a crowd-pleaser

Director h vinoth's valimai, starring ajith, follows the story of an intelligent cop who traces the mastermind behind a series of crimes. the action-thriller is a predictable story laced with brilliant action sequences, says our valimai movie review..

Listen to Story

Ajith's Valimai, directed by H Vinoth, released in theatres on February 24.

After two long years, Ajith Kumar is back on screen. He was an actor who dissolved his fan clubs. Whenever his fans go overboard, he issues statements asking them to respect others. But, he is an actor who wants to keep his fans happy through his films. And his latest outing, Valimai, is just that. It’s an action thriller, with cliches, but is still a major crowd-puller.

A series of chain-snatching incidents result in grievous injuries. Masked men on bikes selling drugs. A drug mafia with a syndicate head (Kartikeya Gummakonda). And Tamil Nadu Police brings in super cop Arjun (Ajith) from Madurai to crack the case and trace the mastermind. Throw in some mother, brother sentiment and some high-octane stunt sequences, you have Valimai.

Valimai has an interesting premise for a slick action thriller. Like director H Vinoth’s Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, Valimai talks about the system and how it doesn’t help common people. However, Valimai isn’t as effective as Theeran. Courtesy: Valimai’s predictable screenplay. The cat-and-mouse game between Ajith and Kartikeya should ideally excite you and make you look forward to the proceedings. But, it only works in parts for Valimai.

It is safe to say that Valimai is probably H Vinoth’s weakest script so far. Every conflict is resolved in a matter of seconds. Every solution is just a stone’s throw away. This brings down the excitement considerably.

There were some juicy ideas in Valimai. However, these portions are too few and get bogged down by the rest of the film. For example, the bike-and-police-van chase sequence in the second half is tastefully done and has a lot of quirks. And the entire stretch was very exhilarating for the audience.

That said, it is great to see Ajith Kumar back on the big screen. Seeing him perform and dance his heart out is something that his fans would totally enjoy. Valimai is a crowd-pleaser in that sense. Ajith, as Arjun, mouths punchlines, shares ‘messages’ about family values, talks about being honest and whatnot. Every now and then, Ajith makes you get up from the seats and clap for him.

Apart from Ajith, Kartikeya Gummakonda delivers a neat performance, making him the dreaded villain. Huma Qureshi as Sofia is a supporting role. Though she gets a fight sequence, her character is boring. Ajith has to spell out what she has to do in an enquiry, despite her being a top officer. GM Sundar’s performance stands out among the lot.

The second half of Valimai is laced with family sentiments. Before the characters appear on screen, we are given a heads-up, thanks to Ghibran’s background music. It’s a cue for the audience to get sentimental.

The cinematography by Nirav Shah is excellent, especially the bike chase sequences. So are Dhilip Subbarayan’s action choreography and Vijay Velukutty’s editing. Naanga Vera Maari song by Yuvan Shankar Raja, enhances the theatrical experience for the audience.

Valimai isn’t a bad film. But, the screenplay is stale. If H Vinoth had incorporated some engaging elements, it would have created a solid impact.

3 out of 5 stars for Valimai.

What's Behind

Thala Ajith's Valimai is carrying huge expectations among movie lovers. The film stars RX100 hero Karthikeya as the antagonist and is directed by H.Vinoth. The film directed by Vinoth is slated for a grand release on February 24,2022 on a pan-India scale in various languages. Let us see what impact Ajith made with Valimai on movie lovers.

Story Review

Visakhapatnam witnesses mysterious murders, chain snatchings, and drug peddling. Unable to control the crime, Visakhapatnam commissioner, gets ACP Arjun (Ajith Kumar) from Vijayawada to bring peace in the port city. Arjun with Narcotic Bureau officer Sophia (Huma Qureshi) tries to crack the code and find out the dark website Rag Brower. To find out more about the rag browser and what is the motive of Naren  (Karthikeya Gummakonda), a biker, watch Valimai on screen.

H.Vinoth just like in Khakee (Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru), started the narration in an interesting manner showcasing the troubled city of Visakhapatnam. Interest increases with the introduction of Ajith as ACP and with the subsequent investigation. However, things deviate in the middle with the narration touching upon his family and the introduction of his family members. The intensity dips and it picks up with the entry of Karthikeya Gummakonda ahead of the interval block. The interval bang with intensity set the stage for the perfect second half. However second half turns out to be routine with the director trying to highlight the sentiments of mother and son and the unemployed youth. This looked completely outdated and tested the patience of the viewers. Even the bike racing scenes which excite viewers at the start, cease to attract viewers as they turned out a bit artificial. The second half becomes more predictable and the cat and mouse game between Ajith and Karthikeya doesn't engage the viewers. The climax finally turns routine after pre-climax increases the interest. However, the dragged narration in parts in the first and second half robbed the viewers of watching a perfect thriller.

Ajith performed the role tailor-made for him. He at times looked aged and seems to have put on weight. However, for all the shortcomings, Ajith stunned all with his breathtaking action scenes. He showed good expressions and emotions. However, Ajith's acting talent is not used to the optimum. Karthikeya surprised with the role of the antagonist. He plays the role of a bike racer. He makes his presence felt appearing just ahead of the interval block with an intense high octane action sequence. His dialogue delivery and he attracts with his macho physique.

Huma Qureshi is ok in the role-playing second fiddle to Ajith in the investigation. She did not get much screen presence but did her role well. Others performed their roles accordingly.

Yuvan Shankar Raja's elevated the scenes with his intense and powerful background music. However, the songs acted as speed breakers. Dilip Subbarayan's stunt choreography is breathtaking. One gets a feeling that they are watching a Hollywood film. The cinematography of Nirav Shah is top class. Dialogues looked cliched. He captured the action scenes in a perfect manner elevating the scenes. However, the editing of Vijay Velukutty could have been far better. There are many drags in the film which affected the tempo. Production values are ok.

Rating Analysis

The excitement increased when Vinoth teamed with Ajith for Valimai. However, Vinoth in order to elevate the heroism of Ajith failed to come up with a powerful story, racy screenplay, and direction. He failed in his execution. Except for the sensational bike racing sequences featuring Ajith and Karthikeya, the story falls apart. Everything else turns out to be mundane and brings viewers the memories of the old films of the 80s and 90s. Had Vinoth concentrated on including twists and turns and trimmed the length of the film, Valimai would have made a better impact.

Ajith Kumar - Valimai Telugu Movie Review

Who is Karthikeya, and how does he operate his network? What happens after Arjun catches him? Will he take revenge on Arjun is the movie’s basic plot.

Performances Ajith playing Arjun is a tailor-made role for him. He is smart, suave and intense, and even though all these qualities are not fully utilized, they can be felt under-currently.

The best qualities of Ajith also involve his passion for bikes and racing. H Vinoth has used these additional skills to great use in Valimai. The bike stunts are sensational, and it enhances the overall star appeal. As a performance, there is nothing home to write about; we have seen Ajith do all this before. He does the usual chore with ease and swag as one expects from him.

Karthikeya , who surprised with a villain turn in Gang Leader, plays another antagonist part in Valimai. Incidentally, this role, too, has a racing connection. For a large part of the first half, he remains hidden mainly behind the scenes. Karthikeya makes his presence around the pre-interval mark and is visible for most of the duration. He is alright playing a criminal mastermind. The intensity is missing, but as most of it is make-do with looks and posing, it is alright.

Director h vinoth

As one can see looking at H Vinoth’s filmography, he is one of the most exciting young emerging talents in Tamil cinema. It’s the reason for the great hype of Valimai in the first place, as it’s larger than life action fare coming from him.

The first half proves to everyone why one should be excited about an H Vinoth film. The young director who has built a repertoire for excellent crime dramas (primarily the criminals behind) shows his spark ‘again’ with the bike gang. The modus operandi and the networking etc., are the strengths of Valimai, which is the case with the director.

However, unlike H Vinoth’s previous attempts, the sentiment isn’t blended correctly in the narrative. The idea of the unemployed being trapped and lured into crimes is dated. Not that it can’t be used, but the way it’s done is the problem here. The emotions generated out of this trope doesn’t create a compelling drama.

The freshness of bike stunts and lavish making contrasts the outdated sentiment. It holds back the movie from getting its absolute stunner of an impact. The lengthy designed interval block adds to the problem. It is sensational in parts, no doubt, but it could have been trimmed.

By the time the interval is done, it feels like completing a full-length movie. It makes one wonder what lies ahead as the main thing is over.

However, the second half starts on an exciting note. It does give an idea of where the movie is headed, but one can’t help but be immersed in the jaw-dropping stunt sequence. Unfortunately, that’s as high as Valimai gets in the second half.

The rest of the proceedings in the second half comprises predictable cat and mouse games between the cop and the thief. As the director has run out of his strengths, the weakness in holding attention via typical mass action is exposed. The sentiment, too, feels contrived and lacks the connection.

The narrative takes an overlong approach to reach the predictable end. The long drawn out mind games and sentiment blocks towards the climax drain our energy and interest. At the closing, one is relieved that the movie has finally ended. It’s a shame we feel that way, given Valimai, in parts, offers sensational and spectacular action bits never seen before on Indian screens.

Overall, Valimai is an action thriller that works well, sticking to the director’s strength in the first half. The weaknesses are exposed in the second half as there is nothing exciting plot-wise. If you love action movies, you can give Valimai a try for the first half. But, remember it’s a patience-testing watch due to the excruciatingly long length.

Drawbacks? Weak Plot Forced Sentiment Second Half

Did I Enjoy It? Yes, first half

Will You Recommend It? Yes, but for only action lovers

Valimai Movie Review Rating

Final Report:

Valimai’s weak story is exposed in the second half as there is no meat. The climax is a big bore and drags with a predictable sentiment.

Still ‘action movie lovers’ can give it a try, once, for the spectacular action. Full review coming soon.

— The climax is overlong and tiring. Final report and detailed review shortly. Stay tuned.

— As the second half progresses the weak plot is getting exposed. The second half bets heavily on couple of action blocks rather than a gripping story.

— Again, the second half starts off with a high octane and stylish stunt episode but it doesn’t end on a high note.

First Half Report:

Valimai’s first half comprises an engaging crime thriller plot mixed with adrenaline-pumping bike racing stunts. The flipside is the simple story and way too lengthy (almost like a climax) interval block with few good bits.

Overall, the first half is decent for the lavish Hollywood style making, good BGM, and novelty in the whole thing, even if it is overlong. The second half is crucial now to see where Valimai ends.

— Ajith gets into the highly technical web network of criminal Kartikeya.

— Ajith figured out the there’s a bigger loot happening and a dangerous gang behind all the crimes. He is now appointed as a lead to solve the crime.

— The gang of chain snatchers are making the cops restless. It involves drugs and killings of innocent people.

— Ajith is on the job to control the crime. The first rain fight is alright followed by a typical hero intro song.

— Valimai show started. The city is witnessing never seen before murders and robberies by a gang of bikers. The take off is super lavish and stylish.

Valimai Review, U.S Premiere updates will begin shortly. Stay tuned.

Tamil star Ajith’s highly awaited pan-India release Valimai is set to hit the big screens on February 24th. It sees the star join hands with his Nerkonda Paarvai director H Vinoth for the second consecutive time.

Valimai has been in the news for a long time. The fans went berserk for an update on it for months together. It was because it has been a long time since the release of Ajith’s last flick. Nerkonda Paarvai hit the cinemas in August 2019. And it wasn’t a regular commercial fare to boot.

Coming to Valimai, it is everything the fans of Ajith want from the star. There is a stylish action, an uber cool looking Ajith and a fresh subject from the actor. The long gap has only increased the expectations.

The biggest advantage with Valimai has become its release timing. Besides the long gap between Ajith films, it is also the first Tamil biggie to hit the screens in Tamil Nadu after the third wave. The whole ground is open. If the film gets positive talk sky would be the limit for its potential. Remember, Ajith already has the highest grossing Tamil movie (outside Baahubali 2) to his name. another such success would further elevate his status as a star.

Apart from Ajith, H Vinoth also stands a chance to enter the big league as a director. His biggest film so far is Khakee. Valimai promises to be more thriller than the Karthi starrer.

M9News, as always, is here to give ‘First-On-Net’ Valimai movie review genuinely and honestly. Watch this space for our updates.

valimai movie review 123telugu

valimai movie review 123telugu

valimai movie review 123telugu

valimai movie review 123telugu

Valimai Review: Tests The Patience Of Audience

Valimai Review: Tests The Patience Of Audience

Movie: Valimai Rating: 1.5/5 Banner: Ramalakshmi Cine Creations Cast: Ajith Kumar, Huma Quresh, KartikeyaGummakonda, Bani and others Music: Ghibran, Yuvan Shankar Raja Director of Photography: Nirav Shah Editor: Vijay Velukutty Producer: Boney Kapoor Written and Directed by: H Vinoth Release Date: Feb 24, 2022

Ajith starrer “Valimai” has been a trending topic on social media for nearly two years. The film’s trailer and promos have further added to the hype. The Telugu dubbed version of the Tamil actioner also hit the theaters today.

Let’s analyze.

Story: Arjun (Ajith) is a sincere cop with values. He doesn’t see chain snatching as a petty case. The Vizag police commissioner has been waiting for such an officer.

When Arjun presents his theory that the series of chain snatching cases and biking gang activities are linked to a drug syndicate, the commissioner asks him to lead the mission.

He quickly zeroes in on the main person behind this gang (Kartikeya). But the chief of the gang has developed a network that is not easy to break in.

How will Arjun save the city and his family that somehow gets dragged into the case?

Artistes’ Performances: Ajith Kumar flaunts style and swag, he is in his element here playing the police officer’s role. He does only two things in the film – action stunts and sentiment. There is no romantic pair for him.

Huma Qureshi plays his colleague. Our Telugu actor Kartikeya Gummakonda has played the villain’s role. He has the body to play the baddie, but he doesn’t get much chance to exhibit his acting skills. His character doesn’t have a proper graph.

Technical Excellence: The action stunts are the main highlight. The film excels in the action department and technical aspects.

A couple of bike chasing sequences and a lengthy bus chase are filmed brilliantly with coordination between the cameraman, action choreographer, and editor. But music is not in the same league. Neither song nor background score is effective.

Highlights: Stylish Action stunts Beginning portion

Drawback: Routine and formulaic narrative Lengthy action episodes Lack of romance and entertainment Tacky sentiment  Dragging on No strong villain

Analysis The plotline of “Valimai” is simple: A police officer hunts down a group of outlaw biker gangs after they are involved in a series of crime incidents.

But it is presented quite differently in the initial stage. Ajith enters the scene only after fifteen minutes of the start.

Before that, the director reveals how masked biker gang is supplying drugs and killing people, and supplying drugs by using sophisticated methods: Cracking QR codes from a painting on the wall, buying bikes on a portal, and dumping them in a quarry after the completion of the criminal activity, using dark web technology. This whole 15 minutes of the stretch is narrated engagingly.

Though the family scenes involving Ajith Kumar and the mandatory introduction song slows the pace initially, it gets back to its interesting setup soon.

Ajith using the ‘reverse’ method to find the villain Kartikeya is quite absorbing. The pre-interval bike chase is another highlight. By and large, the first half of the film is engaging despite the familiar setup.

But it goes completely out of hands after Ajith Kumar nabbing the villain. As there is not much story to drive the film from this point, the director shifts his focus to the family sentiments.

To give a commercial touch, he may have a chance to work on the romantic thread, but the director skipped it and dragged on mother-brother sentiment. The final portions look contrived and bore us to death.

The sentiment angle has diluted the core action drama and turned it into another routine ‘Tamil sentiment masala’. Plus, the logic goes for a toss at many places. There is a command control in the police headquarters that can find out any answer by clicking on keyboards.

The police officer meets in a glass cubicle that looks like a Hollywood set rather than a real police commissionerate. The makers have tried to present the action drama in a glossy manner, but the setup is unrealistic.

If bike gangs are moving in such a manner on the city roads, what are traffic constables doing? In any Indian city, a traffic constable would stop if even one biker went at 100 KM speed with so much noise. But here in the film, biker gangs regularly move on roads together as if they own the roads.

Ajith knows all about crime activities in the city, but he doesn’t know that one of his family members chose the wrong path.

Kartikeya’s villain character is so weak. Sometimes we wonder why Ajith is making so much fuss for this feeble villain. Their cat and mouse game is not exciting either. Their face-off sequence has not created any value.

With nearly three-hour running time and never-ending stunts, “Valimai” tests the patience towards the end. All in all, despite style and sass, and a couple of high-octane action scenes, “Valimai” doesn’t excite us at all, making it a boring watch.

Bottom line: Balimai!

Valimai Review: This Ajith Starrer Is The Ultimate Action Entertainer That You Wouldn’t Want To Miss!

The wait is over! Valimai , one of the most anticipated Kollywood films has finally graced the theatres and how! The action entertainer headlined by Ajith Kumar released in cinemas on February 24 (Thursday). Backed by celebrated producer Boney Kapoor under Bayview Projects LLP in association with Zee Studios, the film is directed by H Vinoth and marks the trio's second collaboration after Nerkonda Paarvai . Valimai is Ajith's first on-screen appearance since the 2019 film.

Valimai

Featuring Huma Qureshi and Kartikeya Gummakonda in key roles, the film has a strong technical team. While Nirav Shah has handled the camera, Yuvan Shankar Raja and Vijay Velukutty have taken care of the music and editing departments respectively.

Did the Ajith-starrer impress the audiences and critics who were eagerly waiting for the film? Let's find out!

Valimai follows Arjun (played by Ajith), an upright police officer (to be precise Assistant Commissioner) from Madurai who comes to Chennai to solve a crucial case involving a gang of deadly bikers called the Satan's Slave. Wolfranga (Kartikeya) is the leader of the gang, who runs the notorious business. The gang involved in ruthless theft and murder go berserk as their control over the city expands. Will Arjun succeed in hunting down the group? Will he be able to save the severely suffering city? Well, to get all the answers, you will have to watch Valimai in theatres near you.

PS: We don't wish to give out any spoilers.

What's Wow? Ajith and Kartikeya's Performances, Action Sequences, Chase Sequences, Background Music And Cinematography

What's Ouch? Lengthy First Half, Predictable Sequences and Melodramatic Family Emotions

Though the story might sound a bit (or more) conventional, given that we have seen endless clash of hero vs baddie in films, director H Vinoth has added his own modus operandi to the entertainer, making it look ultra-modern. The clash and action sequences have been arrayed in a such way that it makes the film more dynamic and gripping. The bus sequence in the second half serves as one of the examples and can easily be called the best sequence shot by an Indian director to date. The second half of Valimai slows down the entire film, all thanks to the stretchy sequences that involve a high dose of family drama, which could have easily been avoided. Having said that, a proper ratio of family emotions in the entertainer could have been a better option.

Performances

Ajith: The leading man is purely effortless and natural in his role as ACP Arjun. His unique style and the way with which he carries his role around other characters appear stately. The death-defying action sequences involving him are a few of the many highlights of the film you wouldn't want to miss, especially if you are someone who wished to see Ajith performing bike stunts in his projects.

Kartikeya Gummakonda: No doubt, the charming actor has lived up to the expectations of the audiences. Though Valimai marks his debut in Kollywood, he surely knows the drill, and the way with which he performed his intense character says it loud and clear.

Technical Aspects

Yuvan Shankar Raja's songs, Ghibran's background score and Nirav Shah's cinematography are enriching and their fine amalgamation has brought to life H Vinoth's power-packed vision. If only Vijay Velukutty's editing scissors were sharper to cut off excess sequences, things would have been in the team's favour, at least to an extent.

Ajith is back and how! Valimai is a pucca mass entertainer as promised and is purely tailor-made for the leading man's ardent fans and action movie aficionados.

‘Valimai’ movie review: The ‘Amma’ sentiment ruins this otherwise thrilling Ajith Kumar-starrer

While ‘theeran adhigaram ondru’ may have announced that h. vinoth could do action, ‘valimai’ reaffirms our belief that he could perhaps be the best indian filmmaker who knows how to write, choreograph and execute action sequences with a larger vision and purpose..

Remember when Tom Hardy decides to join a small group of all-women rebels against the army of war boys in gorgeous set pieces and action sequences of Mad Max: Fury Road ? Now, imagine Tom Hardy walking up to Charlize Theron, narrating why he chose to join them with a sentimental backstory: that of the promise he made to his mother long before she passed away. Imagine how boring, how fake that movie would have turned out to be. This is exactly the problem that kills the H. Vinoth-directed Valimai from becoming a daring action film. But this is not a needless exaggeration to satisfy Ajith Kumar’s fans: Valimai ’s stunt scenes are stunning. Absolutely stunning . H. Vinoth is truly a remarkable talent. He is one of the rare filmmakers who understands and thinks through the action blocks before writing them down.

While Theeran Adhigaram Ondru announced that H. Vinoth could do action, Valimai reaffirms our belief that H. Vinoth could perhaps be the best Indian filmmaker who knows how to write, choreograph and execute action sequences with a larger vision and purpose. Valimai could have been that racy, out-and-out action film we have seen in a long time. But it is bogged down by narrative hiccups: a) it ruins the overall experience with atrociously-written sentimental scenes and b) sadly, it is yet another Ajith Kumar-starrer where the style supersedes the substance.

Ajith Kumar is a rare ‘superstar’ who doesn’t seem to care too much about his ‘image’ and what the gatekeepers of Kodambakkam demand from him. It could be argued that he is, perhaps, the first star to break the on-screen image of a ‘hero’ with Mankatha , wherein he played a ruthless villain with flamboyance and without a moral compass. Which is why Valimai hurts more, for, it looks like a missed opportunity to exploit Ajith Kumar for a pure genre film. But more about the ‘Ajith’ problem later.

Valimai has a very generic premise; it employs a decades-old Good vs Evil trope. But where we get to actually see the flourishes of Vinoth is in the manner he does that. Kartikeya Gummakonda plays a Satan-like Wolfranga who exploits vulnerable youngsters, shunned by society as ‘failures’. He uses them to smuggle drugs that have already been smuggled into Tamil Nadu. In other words, they are Satan’s horses. And the person who has to stop them has to be a demi-god, right? In order to introduce this demi-god, Vinoth takes us to Madurai during the Alagar festivities. We get snapshots of the festival, but the actual Alagar comes alive through Ajith in the midst of thunder and lightning. The set-up and staging are so gorgeous that it leaves you wanting more.

That is another thing about Valimai . Every time we get a stunning action scene, it gives us this feeling that there is more to come. Which is why, even at 180-minutes long, Valimai feels like a great set-up for something big. And you feel cheated when it ends, rather dully.

If you are a fan of action, Valimai has three terrific stretches written into the proceedings. Even if these scenes play to Ajith Kumar’s strengths and reputation as a biker-racer, they are filmed in a manner where you could see the director’s vision to not settle for the ordinary. Valimai is also that film where the director, cinematographer (a fantastic Nirav Shah), stunt choreographer (props to stunt director Dhilip Subbarayan for those mouthwatering bike stunts), background score (Ghibran’s contribution is a huge booster, although the score is loud and overbearing at times) and editor (Vijay Velukutty) are in sync with one other.

The pre-interval stretch, which has people hanging in the air, crawling on the ground and showing off 360 degree skills, makes you wonder how good Vinoth is. Rather, how good Vinoth can be, if he were to make a pure action film. In case you hadn’t noticed, almost three-fourth of this review is about stunts. Because, Valimai looks like the film it could have been.

H. Vinoth also comes across as a filmmaker who understands moral complexities and the compromises that we, as a society, give ourselves. There is a great line Ajith says about women and gold chains. There is an even better line that Kartikeya says about the oppression parents put on their kids. There is even an attempt to understand how youngsters are radicalised. But where Vinoth struggles is when he writes the second half. The idea seemed to be about two people losing the power they think they had. But that doesn’t translate on screen. That is also where Valimai ends up looking without a flavour. That said, without the ‘amma’ sentiment, we would not have got a Mahabaratha kind of a moment between two brothers, one of whom is Arjun (Ajith Kumar).

It has often been said about Superstar Rajinikanth, that filmmakers seem to struggle with him, not knowing how to handle the stardom that supersedes his talent as a gifted actor. This argument could be made more so for Ajith Kumar who is easily an enigma and whose star power continues to be a mystery. Only three filmmakers seemed to have excelled in handling Ajith: Vishnuvardhan in Billa and Aarambam , Venkat Prabhu in Mankatha and Gautham Menon in Yennai Arindhal ; the latter is easily the best Ajith Kumar-starrer in the last decade. None of this is to say that Valimai is a terrible watch by any stretch. It is one of the better Ajith films in recent times. But it is also something we have grown tired of watching Ajith do. Again and again.

Ajith Kumar himself looks so tired on the screen; though give him a pair of sunglasses and he transforms into being the most charming star again. But, but, there is something about Kumar’s eyes that looks defeated, as if they are screaming that the man is worn out and needs rest. As the hunt for a satisfying Ajith Kumar show continues, one wishes that AK gets a goodnight sleep first.

Valimai is currently running in theatres.

List of South Indian Movies Releasing on OTT in August 2024

By Aditi Rathi

The month of August is expected to witness the digital debuts of several prominent South Indian movies. Those who missed these movies in the theaters will be able to catch them on various streaming platforms. From Mammootty’s Turbo and Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 to Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD, details about South Indian movies’ OTT releases are below.

Malayalam superstar Mammootty returned to the action genre with his latest movie, Turbo. The movie follows the story of Jose, a jeep driver who is forced to relocate to Chennai. However, his life takes a drastic turn when he helps his friend, Jerry, when he gets beaten up for deciding to marry his girlfriend. Even when Jerry decides to reject the marriage proposal, Jose sticks to his side.

Vysakh has directed the movie that marks Mammootty’s one of the most expensive projects so far. Moreover, the actor’s production company, Mammootty Kampany, bankrolled the film, which entertained the audience thoroughly. Over two months after its release, the movie is all set to arrive on the OTT platform SonyLIV on August 9, 2024.

After 28 years, Kamal Haasan returned to his freedom fighter character, Senapathy, in the movie Indian 2. The actor played the role of a 106-year-old man who is a master of Varma Kalai. As a result, he believes in zero tolerance and wishes to teach a lesson to corrupt officials and politicians. Directed by S Shankar, the movie did not do well at the box office as the makers had anticipated. Despite Netflix holding its streaming rights, the deal is allegedly not taking place as scheduled.

123telugu.com stated that reports have revealed that the movie is struggling for its digital debut. As per a report, “Netflix offered a whopping price for Indian 2 initially, but upon seeing the poor response from the public, the digital platform is now willing to pay only half the promised amount. Indian 3 will hit the big screens next year, and the third installment is also at risk due to this renegotiation.”

Thus, an official update on the movie’s OTT release is awaited.

Raayan marks Tamil star Dhanush’s latest movie. Besides playing the lead role, he also served as the movie’s director. The movie was released in theaters on June 26 and is currently enjoying a fairly good run. Much like all South Indian movies, the Tamil film is also expected to have a digital debut after four weeks.

Per 123telugu.com , the movie has already locked its streaming platform. Sun NXT has allegedly acquired the movie’s streaming rights. Its official digital release date is awaited.

Kalki 2898 AD

Prabhas’ latest mythological sci-fi dystopian movie Kalki 2898 AD came out to be a giant blockbuster. The movie is based on the events of the Hindu epic Mahabharat. Nag Ashwin directed the movie, which is touted to be the most expensive film ever made in India. Prime Video India has acquired the streaming rights for the movie’s Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam versions. On the other hand, its Hindi version’s streaming rights are with Netflix. As the movie was released on June 27, Kalki 2898 AD is among the South Indian movies expected to have its digital debut in August.

Sharwanand and Krithi Shetty starred in the romance comedy drama Manamey, released on June 7, 2024. The Telugu movie was earlier expected to make its digital debut in July. However, as it did not happen, the film will allegedly arrive on a streaming platform in August.

In conclusion, the month of August will be entertaining for viewers with multiple OTT releases. Moreover, these movies are of different genres and star-studded. From Kalki 2898 AD to Indian 2, these movies will make an entertaining watch for the audience.
