PE Resources – The Books You Can’t Live Without

Picture of Michael Beringer

When I first started teaching Physical Education over 17 years ago, the only way to find new ideas, games, and activities for lesson planning was through collaboration with colleagues or purchasing physical education books through equipment catalogs. I remember spending hours combing through various PE books looking for things I could use to teach K4 through 8th grade physical education.

In the process, I wasted a lot of time and money on books that weren’t worth it. The internet was just beginning, so the ability to search for quality resources was very limited. However, in today’s world the internet has changed everything. The way we search, research, and collaborate to find useful material has made books seem of little use. We can find information at anytime and from any place in the world. We can use desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones to gather information whenever we want instantly. However, books, of course, can still be very useful.

Throughout my career, I have purchased numerous physical education books that have changed the way I teach today. Of course, I had to live and learn and waste money and time figuring out what was and wasn’t quality material. That is why I decided to create and share with you the 14 must-have physical education books you need to check out!

Physical Education Books in PDF

Movement, rhythm, speed and flexibility are aspects of physical activity that should not be missing in our daily lives. Not for nothing has it been included as a compulsory subject in schools for a century. Learn everything related to this subject with our excellent collection of physical education books in PDF format.

Physical education is a discipline that works with the human body from physical fitness and pedagogy. It seeks to promote both physical and mental health and hygiene. It is a compulsory subject in both primary and secondary school.

Although both disciplines provide many health benefits, physical education should not be confused with sport. Physical education is an educational discipline that serves as training for the practice of sports. Sport is part of physical education, although not as a professional practice. Sport is to physical education what calculus is to mathematics.

This book assesses the landscape of physical education today and the issues that shape it as a curriculum subject, particularly in the era of COVID-19. It explores the processes of transformation and change that follow government policy and considers what this means for physical education practitioners in schools.

The book covers a wide range of important issues, across (micro-)political, social-cultural, historical and post-modernist categories. Bringing together current research with autobiographical and anecdotal reflections on the realities of PE teaching, it considers the significance of issues such as the emphasis on competitive sport in schools, the socialization of teachers, the influence of politics and policy on the classroom, colonization and decolonization of the curriculum, digital technologies, the health and well-being agenda and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Offering a unique set of critical perspectives on physical education today, this book is essential reading for any physical education course, for all teacher training programmes with a PE track and for all practising teachers, teacher educators or policy-makers with a professional interest in PE.

50 Children’s Books that Promote Fitness

50 Children’s Books that Promote Fitness

I was a horrible child athlete, the second to worst player on my elementary school softball team. During a 6 th grade basketball game, I think I made a basket for the other team, too. Despite my lack of talent with hand-eye coordination, I was an active child. I spent many years participating in track-and-field and dance lessons. Though decades have passed since my childhood, I’m still excited to run races and take dance classes. Knowing that kids today are often immersed in video games and constantly connected to gadgets, I hope to instill my life-long love of fitness to my son. Being a role model is key, so I do my best to create family fun and fit opportunities  throughout the year. Also, a wonderful way to reinforce a world filled with personal interaction and teamwork is by surrounding him with stories of exercise, activities and team sports so that he can make his own connections. Below is my list of children’s books with a focus on an active lifestyle. I’ve read most of these and received recommendations for the others from my favorite local librarian .

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued fresh guidelines regarding the use of NCERT textbooks in schools. As per the proposed amended rules, the schools have been directed to strictly use the NCERT/SCERT textbooks and take extreme care when selecting any supplementary materials.

For classes 1 to 8, schools have been asked to follow NCERT/SCERT textbooks however they may use supplementary materials as per requirement but it must align with the National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage (NCF-FS) and National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE). The chosen materials must contain the essential core content, states the proposed amended rule issued by the board.

For classes 9 to 12, CBSE has advised schools to mandatorily use NCERT textbooks prescribed by the board. In cases where NCERT/SCERT books are unavailable, the schools must use the CBSE books available on the board’s website. Schools can use supplementary materials if required. They can also use any digital content but it must be in line NCF-SE. They must cross-check that the supplement books do not include any objectionable content that could offend any community, gender, or religious group, the central board said in its official notice.

As per the existing Bye-Laws 2018, schools affiliated to the board were allowed to refer to NCERT textbooks in subjects where they are available. If schools choose to use books from private publishers, they must ensure that these books do not contain any content that could offend any class, community, gender, or religious group. Schools were also required to publish a list of prescribed books on their website which must contain a written declaration signed by both the Manager and the Principal stating they went through the contents of the books. In case of any objectionable content in the supplementary books, the school will be held accountable.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, in a gray T-shirt and baseball cap, speaks at a Kamala Harris event in St. Paul, Minn., last month.

Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2.

Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president.

1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.

2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.

3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota.

4. He reminds you of your high school history teacher for a reason. Mr. Walz taught high school social studies and geography — first in Alliance, Neb., and then in Mankato, Minn. — before entering politics.

5. He taught in China in 1989 and speaks some Mandarin. He went to China for a year after graduating from college and taught English there through a program affiliated with Harvard University.
