BTS's Jungkook Talks About His Admiration For ARMY, How He's Changed Over The Past 10 Years, And More

In a recent interview and pictorial for Vogue Korea, Jungkook talked about his journey and growth as a member of BTS .

As the cover stars of the magazine’s January 2022 issue, each of the seven BTS members sat down for a separate interview.

Jungkook started off by discussing how he protects his worldview. Public figures usually undergo many different influences, making it hard for them to solidify their own worldviews. That also goes for those who have to mold themselves from a young age in order to achieve a certain goal. However, Jungkook is different. His activities outside BTS suggests that he has very clear ideas about what he wants to do.

The idol explained, “I’ve never decided, ‘I’m going to live this way,’ but it’s clear that I want to live according to my will. Even if there’s a life after this one, I won’t be able to remember it, and this is the only life I’ve been given right now. On top of that, it’s a short one. Of course, I should never do something that everyone agrees is wrong, but in the realm of diversity, I want to live my own way. I established these thoughts early on.”

The interviewer said, “They say that life is short, but art is eternal. What is eternal to you?” Jungkook answered, “Even if what I do is art, is it the most important thing? Isn’t life itself more important? The time I lived remains intact to me. That’s why life is both finite and eternal.”

Jungkook is known for being gifted in many areas besides music such as art, photography, and video editing. Some fans wish he would showcase his talents in them more, and he humbly replied, “Those are just some of my interests. I don’t need to put them all into practice.”

Then he shared, “I have realistic thoughts and idealistic thoughts, and they always co-exist. Before I used to be greedy and did what I wanted to do without giving it much thought. However, just like life and human relationships, your thoughts change. These days, I’m more realistic. What I need to do is more important than what I want to do.”

In addition, Jungkook doesn’t want to reveal his creations until he is fully satisfied with them. He explained, “They’ll never be perfect. But I at least don’t want to show people what I’m not satisfied with. There will be a day when I will work hard and show them to the public. Right now, I don’t have the leisure to focus on completing them.”

With BTS, Jungkook’s life changed drastically. In 2014, BTS invited random people to watch their free concert in LA. It was part of an TV show, but they sincerely ran around the streets and handed out flyers. Now in 2021, the tickets to their LA concert at SoFi Stadium sold out in minutes.

Jungkook expressed his disbelief about the huge changes, saying, “I’m always curious about why people love us and get excited about us. I’ve been thinking about how I got to this point. Firstly, I met great members! Secondly, we have a CEO who really loves music. Apart from those reasons, perhaps it’s because the synergy of BTS’s songs, lyrics, messages, performances, and public appearances attracted more and more fans. However, I couldn’t wrap my mind around this situation recently. I guess it’s because we’re unable to meet the audience members in person. As much as I can’t believe it, I’ll have to work harder.”

Jungkook also shared his admiration for ARMY (fandom name), who has been putting BTS’s positive messages into action. Some of ARMY’s good works are environmental projects to revive rainforests and whales and fundraising for vulnerable groups including refugees and the LGBTQ community.

Jungkook commented that he’s both amazed and intrigued by ARMY. He remarked, “I’m just a person who really loves to sing and dance, but ARMY is achieving great things for us. I’m just grateful for their support, but they’re also doing such wonderful things. They started doing these activities to support BTS, but it’s deeply touching to see them enjoying doing good things and being happy about them. I’m personally inspired by them.”

jungkook essay

He thought about how to repay ARMY but couldn’t find an answer for a while. He said, “I didn’t think there was anything special I could do. I’ve come to the conclusion that being good at my job, as I’ve been doing, is what I can do for ARMY.”

jungkook essay

Jungkook debuted at the tender age of 15, and he’s gone through various experiences that helped him grow and mature into who he is today. His members once told him, “It’s great that you haven’t changed at all.”

When asked what has changed the most and what has remained the same over the past decade, the youngest BTS member replied that he thinks everything has changed except for one thing. He explained, “Just like when I was little, I am still warmhearted and trust people well. I give my all to those I love until they break my heart. My members acknowledged this. Sometimes, I worry that something will happen, but fortunately, I have my members to lean on. But if I rely on them too much, it’s like I’m hiding behind them, so I need to find a balance.”

Finally, Jungkook talked about the upcoming decade. In BTS’s hit song “Permission to Dance,” there is a part that goes, “We don’t need to worry. ‘Cause when we fall, we know how to land.” When asked if he thought about how to land, he commented, “There are definitely many people who are greater than me, and as I get older and time goes by, I will have no choice but to go down. But I don’t think about landing. I have a lot of things I want to do. I want to expand my territory and climb up higher.”

In a climate of ever-increasing competition, it’s a real feat when any band makes it to their tenth anniversary bigger than ever. Such is the case with K-pop group BTS (short for bangtan sonyeondan , “bulletproof boy scouts” in Korean). The band have released their first official biography – Beyond The Story – to look back on their decade-long path to international, record-breaking success .

Initially rumoured to be a Taylor Swift autobiography , pre-orders had made the book a bestseller before its subject was announced. It was released to tie in with both BTS’s anniversary and their hiatus, undertaken so that the members could enrol in mandatory Korean military service .

For fans who have been there from the beginning, the book is a souvenir to covet. For western audiences who have discovered K-pop more recently, it’s a pleasant reintroduction to the group’s early incubation years. Having sold well over 40 million albums worldwide – and become the youngest ever recipients of the South Korean Order of Cultural Merit – BTS are among Korea’s most influential ambassadors.

Behind The Story was co-written by South Korean journalist Kang Myeong-seok and the band’s seven members. Following the oral history format that has benefited popular music journalism books such as Lizzy Goodman’s Meet Me In The Bathroom (2011), it tracks the band’s history across 544 pages, culminating in the release of their most recent anthology album, Proof (2022).

One by one, and in their own words, we meet J-Hope , RM , Suga , Jungkook , Jin , Jimin and V . They recall their nervousness at becoming K-pop trainees, their different motivations and the parts of performance they felt most vulnerable about. Each knew that they would have to work impossibly hard if they were to compete at the level K-pop culture demands.

The cover of Beyond the Story with seven headshots of the band members

Through anecdotes both humorous and moving, we learn how they bonded as a group. The seven teenagers, who were from completely different walks of life, were set up in a bunkhouse to learn how to sing and dance as a slick professional outfit.

In telling the story of BTS, Beyond The Story also tells the story of K-pop and how its dynamics have changed over the years. Fans who cottoned onto BTS in their international breakthrough era of songs such as Boy With Luv (2019) or Dynamite (2020) may assume that they always traded in upbeat pop. But their early years were actually deeply rooted in American Hip-hop , a genre K-pop has borrowed from since the early 1990s.

While K-pop groups often pride themselves on a style of perfectly-synchronous choreography known as kalgunmu (razor-sharp dancing), BTS’s hip-hop influence allowed them a certain looseness. Their musical hybridity helped to bring their individual personalities to life.

While it is true that Korean management companies closely guide their stars’ public image, and work them hard from a very young age , Beyond The Story challenges the stereotype of K-pop artists as mere performance puppets. There are several moments where members recall direct involvement in styling, choreography or songwriting. They also discuss using their platform to speak up on a range of social and political issues .

The group’s founding label Big Hit was considered small when they launched. This meant the group were frequently underestimated – even mocked – by their peers. But this underdog status encouraged them to experiment with DIY forms of self-promotion. The members blogged directly to a growing fanbase , for example, instead of relying on management-led channels.

It’s a model that has paid off. Though K-pop still evokes images of impressive polish and unison performance, newer groups such as Seventeen , Le Serrafim and Tomorrow X Together have been able to develop a model which matches feats of dance athleticism with more vulnerable, personal lyricism. This allows them to be both relatable and aspirational for worldwide audiences.

A new wave of music biography

Some prior understanding of the K-pop industry may be required to get the most out of the book (knowing how groups are typically assembled, for example, or how competitive Korean TV shows work). But as a contribution to modern music journalism, Beyond The Story is valuable. As they learn of the band’s insatiable work ethic, discipline and brotherly commitment, readers will feel as if they know each of the seven members much better, with a deeper understanding of how their music has developed since their debut.

It’s also highly visual. Lush photography neatly punctuates the chapters, guiding the reader smoothly through each BTS era. With pages that mark the track listings and specific details of each release, it’s easy to turn to your favourite album or treat the book as a reference text – a thoughtful, encyclopaedic blueprint for future artist biographies to come.

The use of QR codes throughout (330, to be exact) is also a smart innovation, recognising that fans might want to reminisce about (or discover) the group’s music videos, dance practices and video logs for themselves as they read. In this way, the book becomes a living museum, truly immersive and interactive.

Of course, the BTS story is far from over. Amid their hiatus, the members are experiencing international success with solo singles. Jimin recently became the first Korean soloist to top the US Billboard charts. At a time when K-pop feels bigger than ever, their success story can only inspire others who are ready to ride the unstoppable Korean wave to reach for their dreams, or indeed, for their local bookstore.

Jungkook explains 'Golden' and his solo career

November 2, 2023, 6:09 pm 5 Comments

Jungkook presented in a new video, his solo album 'Golden', and talked about his solo career. He stated : “I started my solo career with Seven and 3D, but this is the first solo album released under my name, so it’s very significant. I can't wait to hear what other people have to say about this album. »

Jungkook explains 'Golden' and his solo career 3

Jungkook also explained the album title. He said : “Now I use the word golden moment. I think it's a combination of things like that moment, the nickname Namjoon gave me, and the talent I was born with. This feeling of reflection and proof is present in the album, as well as the ambition to prove it. I'm very excited and nervous. »

GOLDEN features the title track Standin Next To You , followed by seven other tracks. Seven and 3D are also part of the album. The singer explained his choice: “If you look at the album tracks from top to bottom, I think you can naturally feel the change in emotions. The title track Standing Next to You is a retro-punk genre and, as the title suggests, the message is "I'll always be with you, no matter what." I dare say it, but I think I'm going to give a performance that's going to be epic. I'm so confident that I can't wait to show it to you. »

Jungkook explains 'Golden' and his solo career

For his solo album 'GOLDEN', composed only of songs in English, the singer collaborated with Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, DJ Snake, Major Lazer among others. On these collaborations, i declared it: “So many people participated, and I actually received the song, but it's a shame I didn't get to meet Ed Sheeran or Shawn Mendes in person. I still communicated with other producers and made video calls. during the recording process. I would like to meet you if I have the chance” , he added.

Jungkook revealed that he personally selected all the songs for his album. He also briefly commented on the expectations for him. When asked if he discovered his new personality as a solo artist, the BTS singer replied: “I think I felt a lot while recording and working on my new self. But on the other hand, these new discoveries are not the only good thing. “I’m not good enough at this or that thing” and so on. I think I had one of those moments where I reflected on myself again. »

Jungkook will hold a concert next month for the release of his 1st album

The Seven singer also reflected on his global popularity and being considered a global star. He stated : «  I am grateful and embarrassed to be called a global pop star. But I want to make sure that the singing, the dancing or the music, everything is perfect. I want to create my own color, so I practice my singing and monitor myself to see where I need to improve. »

He added: “But I feel like I still have a lot of work to do. So I have to work harder. I'm still not good, but I'm good enough. Still, I feel a little less self-conscious when I sing a variety of songs and I think I can fit in with a song. I think it's my strength to have this kind of voice. »

JK, if for you that's not yet being good enough, when you think you are, your songs will kill us once??

The album is awesome! We have r n' b, electro, pop, funk... it's varied without going in all directions, and his voice is highlighted in each of the titles.

I hope that for the next one, there will be rock because I see it just as well in this register! And about the classic too, he spoke about it.

My verdict: this is a golden album. Not solid gold, we're not there yet, but he's on the right track. For a start, he made some interesting choices and it was successful. He wanted to show his musical versatility and it was once again successful. In any case, the essay is transformed.

His ease of sliding from one genre to another and his ambition to explore various musical fields are rather well represented in this album. He lives up to his title: he shows what he's capable of, but he knows he can do even better and that's all we're waiting for. Too proud of him.

“Standing next to you” is my favorite because this retro-funk rhythm is just incredible with JK’s voice and style. I didn't imagine him in this genre and yet, he made it his own.

My favorites from the album are “Yes or no”, “Hate you”, “Too sad to dance”. The r n'b fits him like a glove.

Thank you JK for this golden moment that you offer us with this album! Congratulations for your work and continue to surpass your limits.

Marie Josie

Me, I haven't listened to your new solo song yet and to tell you the truth, I sometimes listen to your songs with the group BTS, I sometimes love listening to your voices and seeing your new performances everyone . I want to congratulate you for your bravery and your honesty, I decided to listen to this new album, even if I don't understand English or Korean, just by hearing your songs and the melody it transports me into another world. But remember to always rest well, eat well and drink plenty of water. Your Health and that of the other members of BTS is more important For you and for your whole Family, so don't forget it, if you feel at any time that you are tired, then rested, your life is more important than your songs. ♥️♥️

Lilipop

The album is magnificent, a varied sound,

Yesssssss! What are your favorite songs?

Yoonareyonga

I'm still disappointed that all the songs are only in English :/ I know that Jungkook is not looking for popularity but rather to reach fans so I don't understand this choice.. However I hope his album sells well and I know it will be another banger

BTS: Jeon Jungkook (2021) | Big Hit Music

The Passion According to BTS’ Jeon Jungkook

Passion is a risk in the life of BTS’ Jeon Jungkook and in Clarice Lispector’s 1964 novel The Passion According to G.H.

jungkook essay

“And maybe only thought can save me, I’m afraid of passion,” writes Brazilian author Clarice Lispector in her 1964 novel, The Passion According to G. H. Had Jeon Jungkook read this book, it’s unlikely that this would be among his favorite quotes. The singer, dancer, songwriter, and producer does not shrink from passion. Instead, a passionless life is what he fears: “I’d rather die than to live without passion,” he says when asked about his life motto. He was 15-years-old at the time(Arirang K-pop, 2013).

Back then, BTS (the music group he is a part of) hadn’t achieved even half of what they would in the upcoming years (sold out stadium tours, charting records all over the world, the Order of Cultural Merit in Korea, just to name a few things). Now, as Jeon turns 24 years old (25 in Korean age), his passion—or, his passion for passion—seems not to have changed.

In The Passion According to G. H. , the passion that Lispector hints at is not a passion for something or someone. It’s the spark within, the mystical experience through which one understands one’s self and the world beyond the physical and the systematic. Plato and Socrates described it as theia mania (crazy wisdom). In her emblematic novel, Lispector narrates an episode of a woman having an epiphany after finding a cockroach in her apartment. This character verges on madness, but through madness, she understands life in a different way from others.

As for passion in the sense of purpose and intensity, it may be directed toward something, but only if it already exists per se. The music of BTS has followed a similar approach before: not exactly with passion, but with love, in the album trilogy Love Yourself (2017-2018). Passion can be a stage of love or a way to it. In that sense, it’s telling that BTS’ Love Yourself trilogy opens with the dreamy “Euphoria” (2018), a song that the passionate Jeon sings alone.

“Euphoria” is the beginning of a journey towards finding self-love. The lyrics can pass as merely romantic; however, they speak of the sensation of someone who enters a new stage of a soul journey: “The surrounding becomes more and more transparent / I hear the ocean from far away / walk across the dream over the forest / and go towards that place as it gets clearer” (translation by Doolset, 2018).

“Euphoria” is about losing yourself in a dream to find something else. Through Jeon’s vocal interpretation, the situation comes across as joyful and thrilling. Through Lispector’s writing, however, the feeling is fear. “I’m so frightened that I shall be able to accept the notion that I have lost myself only if I imagine that someone is holding my hand”, Lispector writes. “Take my hands now, you are the cause of my euphoria,” Jeon sings.

Fear and excitement can be two sides of the same coin, two possible reactions to the experience of reaching a new place inside oneself. Jeon represents excitement. As Nicholson writes in Plato’s Phaedrus , through theia mania we have our “highest happiness”. In “Euphoria”, Jeon is the one offering his hand to his passion. He’s not scared. He wants to surrender to the feeling.

Through euphoria, he accesses feelings that resonate with his core being. It’s a new state, but it’s also a familiar one. Enthusiasm, after all, “is a forgetting, but one whose essence is remembering” (Gundert, in Nicholson, 1999). Jeon’s unapologetic passion in “Euphoria” is fundamental to kick BTS’ journey towards self-love, and later, the Map of the Soul (the album sequence that comes after BTS’s Love Yourself trilogy). No wonder someone like Jeon Jungkook would give life to a song like “Euphoria”: passion is, just like the lyrics say, “a priori inside” of him.

A mortal body is sometimes too fragile to contain so much intensity. “I know that at one and the same time I want and don’t want to hold myself back anymore,” Lispector writes. “I’m also passionate and ambitious to the point where sometimes my body can’t take it,” Jeon says (Rowley, 2020). Is passion self-destructive? Is a passionate life a consuming one? How far can one go when driven by passion? One can only know by taking chances, and to take chances one must have no fear.

Seizing passion is a risk. It’s a risk Jeon Jungkook decided to take from very early on. Back in 2011, his performance in the singing competition Superstar K3 caught the attention of big and established music labels in Korea. Nevertheless, he chose a small company, then called Big Hit Entertainment. More than guarantees, he was guided by the potential, and his admiration for the underground hip-hop artist Rap Monster (now RM), who had just joined the same label. It is the type of choice made by people for whom passion is their driving force.

Betting on something that might never work is scary, but failure is an acceptable risk if it comes with the chance to be with something that excites you so much—or, perhaps, the chance to become such a thing. Jeon showed impressive, visionary behavior for someone who was but a teenager. His bold choice was only the tip of what we’d see from him.

Together with BTS, he would conquer things until then unimaginable for himself. “Creation isn’t imagination, it’s running the huge risk of coming face to face with reality,” Lispector writes. Just as scary as putting all your passion into a vision that might never come true, is the possibility of it coming true. If it does, and you still don’t want to stop, then what’s next? There’s nothing left to do but to stretch even further, work even harder, put even more passion into what you do. “(…) it’s not like we’re being forced to try harder; it’s just my personal ambition,” Jeon says in an interview for Weverse Magazine (Kang, 2021). “I think I can do better.”

In a scene from Jun-Soo Park’s documentary Break the Silence (2020), BTS members j-hope and SUGA compare Jeon’s approach on performance with j-hope’s. While both are magnificent dancers and energetic performers on stage, j-hope manages energy in a way that won’t exhaust him throughout a long tour. Jeon, on another side, gives all of himself in every concert, even if at the expense of his health. He “dances until his body breaks,” j-hope says.

Analyzing both styles, SUGA uses the metaphor of a camel and a horse. A camel walks slower but reaches the same place as a horse without getting as tired. It’s a clever metaphor, and it’s true; but to individuals like Jeon, passion is the fuel, yes, but also the destination.

If his passion is the source of joy for more people besides himself, that’s an extra reason to put it all in force. “We may perform a song a lot of times, but the fans come to the show to see that one time,” j-hope says, explaining why he empathizes with Jeon despite being different. “A camel moves consistently, but it collapses consistently too,” SUGA says. Being the horse has its pros and cons.

“The temptation of pleasure. The temptation is to eat directly from the source. (…) And the punishment is no longer wanting to stop eating, and eating. (…) I would never rest again: I had stolen the hunting horse of a king of joy.”  — The Passion According to G. H

Passion in one’s work can also be a means to challenge the status quo. “If I raised the alarm at being alive, voiceless and hard they would drag me away since they drag away those who depart the possible world, the exceptional being is dragged away, the screaming being,” Lispector writes. Jeon is a member of a group whose drive and passion are at times belittled, while the ordinary and privileged sometimes garner praise in performances that are less passionate.

As the youngest member of BTS, Jeon had to learn performance techniques quickly. “24, It feels as if I became an adult quicker than anyone / My life has been a movie all the time / I ran to where the sun rises, every single night / It feels like maybe I’ve been to someone’s tomorrow / (…) Can I someday finna find my time?” he sings in “My Time” (2020) (Doolset, 2020), which he co-wrote. Caught between different timelines, Jeon’s choice is to embrace all of them at once until he finds his own. “I’m a concomitant being: I gather in myself time past, the present and the future, the time that pulses in the tick-tock of the clocks,” Lispector writes, understanding.

In a passionate life, there is a lot to manage in terms of time, energy, and expectations. However, that’s hardly something that would discourage the passionate individual. Passion is not just the thing driving artists toward reward, it is the reward itself. Not everyone will be able to keep up, but they don’t have to. They can walk at their own pace. “Even if our steps might be in different frequencies, I’d like to walk on this path with you” (Doolset, 2020), Jeon sings in “Still With You” (2020), a song he co-wrote and co-produced.

As The Passion According to G. H. and Jeon’s life testify, there’s a reason why some people are afraid of passion, whether they’re aware of it or not: once passion is unlocked, there’s no going back.

“Scream”, I repeated uselessly with a sigh of deep quietude. (…) But if I screamed even once, I might never again be able to stop.”  — The passion according to G. H.

Jeon Jungkook started “screaming”, if you will, at a young age. Perhaps only death itself can put an end to it. That is; the death of the physical body over the death of passion, as BTS sings in “Black Swan” (2020): “If this can no longer make my heart flutter / Perhaps, this will be how I die once” (Doolset, 2020). These are ambitious mottos for one to impose on oneself, but Jeon is determined. “Couldn’t you be a little softer on yourself?” Jeon was once asked (Kang, 2021). “No”, he answered.

BTS’s Jung Kook on his hobbies, artistic achievements and growing up in the limelight

By Narang Kim

23 December 2021

From debuting at the tender age of 15 to now being a part of the world's biggest boy band, BTS's Jung Kook has spent a large portion of his life in the public eye. During the cover shoot of Vogue Singapore's 'Grace' issue, the 'Golden Maknae' talks about his goals, his current pursuits and what we can expect from him next

Those who work in the public eye come under a lot of different influences, making it hard for them to formulate their own world views. The same is true of those who have had to mould themselves from a young age to achieve a certain goal. But Jung Kook is different. His pursuits outside BTS suggest that he has very clear ideas about what he wants to do and show that he can seal himself off from outside influences. This is one of the things we like about Jung Kook.

jungkook essay

How has he managed to foster his own ideas? Jung Kook, who listens attentively while making eye contact, replies: “I don’t have clear answers like, ‘This is how I’ll live!’ But what’s clear is that I want to decide for myself how to live my life. Perhaps there will be an afterlife, but who knows? This is the only life I’ve got, and it’s short. I’d never do something that everybody agrees is wrong, but where various ways are acceptable, I want to live on my own terms. I settled on this fairly early on.” Curious about Jung Kook’s thoughts on life’s fleeting nature, I respond: “They say that life is short, but art is eternal . What is eternal to you?” Jung Kook says: “Let’s assume that what I do is art. Would this be the most important thing? Isn’t life itself more important? The time I’ve lived is distilled in me. So, life is finite but also eternal.”

Jung Kook is preoccupied with all sorts of art, not just music . Some fans want Jung Kook, the ‘Golden Maknae’ (or ‘youngest of the family’) of BTS, to showcase his talents in other areas more, such as painting, photography and video editing. Jung Kook humbly says: “These are just some of my other interests, and I don’t feel the need to develop all of them.” But multitalented individuals must surely hear an inner voice urging them to make use of such talents. It must be difficult to ignore the desire to express oneself in various ways besides music.

“I have realistic as well as idealistic goals,” says Jung Kook. “I used to be greedy and did what I wanted to do without giving it much thought. But the way one thinks changes over time, as does life in general, and relationships, too. These days, I’m more realistic. What I need to do is more important than what I want to do.” On top of this, Jung Kook doesn’t like to reveal his creations until he is fully satisfied with them. “They’ll never be perfect, but they at least have to be at a level I’m happy with,” he tells me. “I’ll work hard, and one day I’ll be able to unveil them to the public. Right now, I don’t have the mental energy to spend on improving them.”

“There are lots of things I still want to do. I want to continue expanding as an artist and achieve even greater things”

Over the past couple of years, it has not been easy for Jung Kook to work—even on his hobbies, like painting and photography. “If the stage set is the same every time one performs, there’ll be less excitement for the performing artist and the spectator alike,” he says. “I need to keep seeking change and challenge myself. The same goes for photography and painting. I carried a camera with me when we worked, but we couldn’t move around much due to COVID-19, so the photos all looked pretty similar. And going on risky trips that weren’t really necessary wasn’t an option.” Instead, Jung Kook found joy in books, portals into other worlds. He is making an effort to read more books in his spare time in order to become better at writing lyrics. His current fascination with writing lyrics links up with his other artistic pursuits. “My lyrics reflect my speech and individuality,” he explains. “This is another area where I can express myself.”

Hopefully, Jung Kook will soon be enjoying a change of scenery. He was thrilled by the chance to visit the UN General Assembly to sing ‘Permission to Dance’ in September 2021. “Every time we prepare an album and record a performance on stage, I have the same mindset,” he says. “But there was something extra when we filmed a video with dancers on the lawn in front of the UN General Assembly. Having fun dancing and singing together outdoors made me feel that better days were on the way. I felt that the day was drawing near when we’d be able to meet ARMY up close, or the day when I could go out alone at dawn and enjoy tasty snacks.” I ask whether it is even possible for a superstar to go to a late-night restaurant alone, but Jung Kook smiles and says: “There’s always a way.”

BTS has changed Jung Kook’s life dramatically. In 2014, BTS went out on the street in Los Angeles and invited random passers-by to attend their free concert. This was being filmed as part of a TV show, but they worked hard to promote their group by handing out flyers. Since then, BTS have skyrocketed. In 2021, tickets for their concert at SoFi Stadium, near Los Angeles, sold out in minutes. Comparing then to now, Jung Kook is tongue-tied. “I always wonder why people love and adore us,” he admits. “I’ve thought a lot about how I arrived at this point. Firstly, I was lucky to have talented team members! Secondly, we have a CEO who really loves music. Apart from that, perhaps the synergy of BTS’s songs, lyrics, messages, performances and public appearances attracted more and more fans? Lately, it’s become even more difficult for me to wrap my mind around the situation. I guess it’s because I’m unable to meet the audience members in person. I need to work harder to prove that I’m worth their support.”

jungkook essay

Jung Kook is also very mindful of BTS’s positive influence. “As I get older, I feel more pressure,” he confesses. “I’m not particularly great; and I’m not that good and virtuous. I’m a very ordinary person, and I’m often scolded by the other members for my immature behaviour. If the world sees us as having a positive influence, then I need to try to adjust and match my actions and thoughts to those values.”

ARMY has been putting BTS’s positive messages into action. Their environmental projects, like saving rainforests and whales, and their fundraising for vulnerable groups such as refugees and LGBTQ people have been astonishing in terms of their scope and speed. ARMY seems to have become a global cultural movement that goes beyond the fandom. Jung Kook is amazed and intrigued by ARMY. “I’m just someone who loves to sing and dance, but ARMY is achieving greater things for us,” he says. “I can’t thank them enough for their support for us, but they’re also doing such wonderful things. I’m deeply moved by ARMY, which started as a group of BTS supporters but has evolved into a real force for good. I’m inspired by them.” Jung Kook wanted to find a way to repay ARMY , the group’s proud flagbearers, but found himself at a loss. “It seemed there was nothing special I could do,” he says. “I’ve come to the conclusion that being good at my job, as I’ve been doing, is what I can do for ARMY.”

“If the world sees us as having a positive influence, then I need to try to adjust and match my actions and thoughts to those values”

Jung Kook has approached his work with excitement rather than apprehension. It’s not that he’s been free of anxiety because each album was a success or because he is loved by the fans, but because he has believed in himself and his group mates. “We did our best with every album and on every stage,” Jung Kook says. “Nobody can be perfect, but I’ve been able to enjoy it because I do everything that’s required of me. That’s why I can accept an occasional poor result.”

This seems to be Jung Kook’s attitude toward life. “I understand that hard work and the outcome are two separate things,” he explains. “I’ve learnt how to accept the result. Of course, having the ambition to improve myself is another matter.” As Jung Kook debuted at age 15, he must surely have matured more than any other BTS member. On the other hand, they tell him: “It’s great that you haven’t changed at all.” What about him has changed the most and how has he remained the same over the past decade? “I was warm-hearted and trusting as a child, and I still am,” he admits. “Until they break my heart, I give my all to those I love. My group mates all acknowledge this. Sometimes, I worry about what’s going to happen, but I’m lucky enough to have my group mates beside me, which is reassuring. But if I depended on them too much, it would be like hiding behind them, so I need to be able to stand on my own.” Except for this, he adds, everything from the way he speaks to the way he thinks has changed. I believe that another thing that remains the same is his energy. Jung Kook shows no signs of tiring during the photo shoot for Vogue, which proceeds at a fast pace and without a break. He raises the energy of the set, moving with the rhythm of the background music and approaching group mates to massage their shoulders or straighten their clothes.

As Jung Kook puts it, after an incredible 10 years, what will the next 10 be like? ‘Permission to Dance’ contains the words, “We don’t need to worry. ’Cause when we fall, we know how to land.” I ask Jung Kook if he has thought much about how to land. “Obviously, many people are more successful than me, and as I get older and time goes by, my career is bound to taper off,” he reflects. “But I don’t think about landing. There are lots of things I still want to do. I want to continue expanding as an artist and achieve even greater things.”

jungkook essay

While JYP Entertainment, FNC Entertainment, TS Entertainment and many other entertainment companies wanted to sign Jungkook, he opted for Big Hit Entertainment. The reason? His love and admiration for the BTS leader Kim Namjoon aka RM, who was an underground rapper back then going by the stage name Runch Randa.

Jungkook has revealed in numerous interviews that when he was living in Busan, he didn’t know a lot of musicians. But he was enamoured by RM’s rapping skills and wanted to know his company.

When he participated in Superstar K , he came across Big Hit’s owner Bang Si-hyuk and learned that RM was a trainee there. A 15-year-old Jungkook then made up his mind to work alongside his inspiration and chose to join the Seoul-based label.

His stage name

The K-pop idol has revealed in numerous interviews that his stage name was almost ‘Seagull’ — a reference to the official bird of Busan. However, he decided to use his real name ‘Jeon Jeongguk’, but later altered the spelling to ‘Jungkook’.

The youngest BTS member has showcased his love for boxing in various instances over the past few years. He also joined the Olympic gold medalist and star of Netflix’s Physical: 100 Choo Sung-hoon for a sparring session in June 2022.

When an interviewer asked Sung-hoon about his experience, the mixed martial artist praised the “Butter” singer’s skills and said that he could become a professional boxer if he focused more on his training.

Jungkook is the king of setting new records with his live streams.

The BTS singer’s 2021 appearance on the South Korean streaming app, Vlive garnered more than 22 million viewers in just 1 hour and 18 minutes. It has the highest recorded real-time views for an individual livestream on the platform.

Jungkook also holds the record for the top four most real-time views for an individual livestream on Weverse — a fan community platform developed by Weverse Company, a subsidiary platform company of HYBE.

Thanks to this, in January 2023, he became the first Asian act to have a live performance surpassing 100M views on YouTube.

A passionate visual artist

Did you know Jungkook’s artistic bent goes beyond his musical talents?

While the singer showcased his painting skills during the group’s reality TV series BTS In The Soop, in 2018, he also created the album cover art for Suga’s “Seesaw x I NEED U Remix” — a proof of his graphic design skills.

Another amazing art piece by Jungkook was a beautiful golden clock that he designed for the 24/7 = Serendipity exhibition in 2019.

The latest addition to this list is the 2021 cover art he created for his rendition of Harry Styles’s “Falling”.

He has his own production studio

Called Golden Closet Film, Jungkook started his own video production studio in 2017. The name is inspired by his old dorm room, which resembled a big walk-in closet, and the first part of his nickname, Golden Maknae.

The most popular work produced by his studio is G.C.F, a travel vlog-style series, shot, edited and directed by Jungkook himself.

‘A.R.M.Y’ was Jeon Jungkook’s first tattoo

BTS JUNGKOOK

The BTS singer has been covering the back of his right hand and sleeve with new inks for a while now. In one of his Weverse lives, the “Still With You” crooner finally gave Army a tour of his tattoos.

Jungkook shared that the first tattoo he got was ‘A.R.M.Y.’ He inked it on his knuckles as he is proud of the BTS fandom and so wanted the symbol in a visible spot. He then gave fans a detailed explanation about his crown tattoo, his birth flower tattoo and the rest.

The South Korean idol also revealed that he has his birth time inked in between his other tattoos.

The singer is a big fan of the multiplayer first-person shooter game Overwatch . He has also been spotted playing video games like Pyke, Teamfight Tactics and StarCraft on multiple occasions.

And for all those admirers who are curious to know about the love of his life, it is his pet Jeon Bam. The latter is a Doberman and was revealed through JK’s lock-screen wallpaper during his Vlive on 31 August 2021. Bam was officially introduced to the world in the first episode of BTS In the Soop season 2.

9. Standing behind members

He’s always seen hiding behind the members during interviews or ceremonies and it just makes him look like the cutest bunny ever.

10. Pointing his toes

Many hours of dance practicing might be the reason for his constant toe pointing habit.

OMG… Jungkook's pointing toes habit is the same as mine .. Why i've never noticed it before… I showed it to my family and they said yes, it's exactly the same as mine.. And they all laughed at me.. Jungkook-ahh… We're the same habit… 😂😂😂 pic.twitter.com/yD1rJYkkqS — Bunny🐰💜 (@Leesya_jjk) January 28, 2020

16 Reasons Why We Love Jungkook

Yes I know it's late!! School just started and it's already taken over everything. But now that I have a free second let's do this.

This is the last part to my 16 Reasons series, so I really hope you all enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun making it and I got some really awesome feedback. So without further ado, here is 16 reasons why we love Jungkook

1. He's basically a meme

Jungkook is probably the biggest meme in BTS. Seriously. He has so much derp OMG

2. His nose

So I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but I think Jungkook's most defining feature is probably his nose. I mean look at it, it's so cute! Every time I watch a video or a Bangtan Bomb or anything, I can't help but notice how cute it is.

3. His fashion sense

Like me, Jungkook's fashion sense is pretty uniform. The outfit he wears all the time is a white shirt, jeans, and his brown boots. How often have you seen him in that outfit? Pretty often right? But I honestly love his outfit. It's so plain and simple but it seems to fit his colorful bright personality some how 🤔🤔🤔.

4. Big Bang Fanboy

Honestly, Jungkook is the biggest Big Bang fanboy I know. He's always listening to their music, singing it, and dancing to it.

He was also so nervous around GD during that one music show. Awww our cute lil googie

He actually only wanted to become a singer after listening to G-Dragons songs.

5. Girl group dance

       Need I say more?

6. He loves animals

Jungkook once said, if he had a super power, he would want to be able to talk to all the animals that live on earth.

He has a Maltese at home and it's name is 구름 (Cloud). He even asked if they could have a dog in the dorm, but all the members said no because it wouldn't live long.

          During the summer, he caught about 4 crawfish and kept them as pets too. LOL. But he accidentally left them out in the sun and they turned red and died. Jungkook was really sad afterwards too ;-;

7. His dancing

Jungkook is a really REALLY good dancer. something about the way he moves when he dances just hypnotized you. He seems so carefree but at the same time he has sharp quick movements. He's always good at hitting the moves on point and on beat as well.

Jungkook learned girl dance, urban style and many more. He actually B-Boyed in seventh grade in a club with some of his friends.

8. His singing

Jungkook's voice is probably my favorite singing voice in BTS. You can always tell its him when he's singing. It's not very hard to tell the difference between his voice and the others.

When Jungkook sings, you can tell he really loves doing what he does. He closes his eyes and immerses himself in the music. Just understanding the music and enjoying it all the time.

9. He's such a child

As much as you think Jungkook is all grown up and mature, you're completely COMPLETELY wrong. Jungkook is still a cute lil baby that loves being a cute lil baby. Nothin. will EVER change that.

11. His hair

Jungkook rocks EVERY hair color. My personal favorite is when he had brown hair with the lift brown highlights.

Also let's not forget Jungkook with his hair up. Ahh the beautiful forehead

12. He's basically the best at everything

The other members have said before that Jungkook is an all around type of guy. He's very well rounded and is good at basically anything (except math). He's the strongest as well. They don't call him the Golden Maknae for nothing.

Jungkook can also play guitar, drums, and sing. He's also never lost at arm wrestling to Jimin either. Lol poor ChimChim.

13. Hardworker

Jungkook didn't just start out at the top of the game. He started from not really being anything or having any dreams to being an extremely talented, famous teenager.

Sometimes, Jungkook would practice with Jimin in the dance room until 1 or 2 am.

At first, he wasn't satisfied with his voice when he sang live, so he would practice singing while he worked out or when he was just going about everyday life. Once when he sang badly on stage, he was so sad that he sat in the practice room and cried for hours. After that experience, he worked as hard as he could to become a better singer.

Whenever Jungkook wants to learn something new, he studies it very hard because he wants to be a good song writer and composer like the rest of the members.

14. Perseverance

When Jungkook first tried out for BigHit, they told him that his dancing had no emotion and no feeling whatsoever. So did Jungkook give up dancing? Absolutely not. Instead of getting disappointed, he used this as a learning experience and traveled to America to learn how to dance better.

He's definitely not a quitter. Telling him he's not good at something just makes him try harder. He watches the others closely, so he sees what makes them successful and he uses that as a guide. He's amazing!
